• High load on a nagios server -- How many service checks for a nagios server is too many?

  I have a nagios server running Ubuntu with a 2.0 GHz Intel Processor, a RAID10 array, and 400 MB of RAM. It monitors a total of 42 services across 8 hosts, most of which are checked using the check_http plugin even 5 minutes, some every minute. Recently the load on the nagios server has been above 4, often as high as 6. The server also runs cacti, gathering statistics every minute for 6 hosts. I wonder, how many services should hardware like this be able to handle? Is the load so high because I am pushing the limits of the hardware, or should this hardware be able to handle 42 service checks plus cacti? If the hardware is inadequate, should I look to add more RAM, more cores, or faster cores? What hardware / service checks are others running?

Is it effective installing firewall software on same machine which offering internet service? My server will offer HTTP, NFS, and SSH, and custom made server software on a several ports. (edit) All services (except NFS) should be open to internet. Not internal services. I guess my machine (virtualized within Xen) is connected to the internet directly because I can connect to my machine SSH with only IP address. (edit) NFS is not open to internet. Sorry for my mistake. NFS will be served via SSH only.

• Run a service after networking is ready on Ubuntu?

  I'm trying to start a service that depends on networking being started, whenever the computer is rebooted. I have a few questions: Is this easily possible from an /etc/init.d script? I have tried creating a script here (conforming to the standards), but I'm really doubtful that it's even running on boot, let alone working. When I test it manually, it works. I've seen the new Upstart service, but as far as how that actually works, I'm completely in the dark. How can I make a script that runs on boot which runs after networking has been started? If I could run it after connected to wireless network, even better :)

• Stopped windows firewall service during ICS, how is this possible?

  Although windows firewall is required to be on when you "start" Internet Connection Sharing, you can stop the WF service with MMC. When done a client can still use the host machines internet. The firewall had port 80/http blocked, and now it is open for incoming traffic. However other ports used by applications on the host and client which communicate with each other still seem to be blocked. Can anybody explain what might be happening here? Doesn't ICS need windows firewall for NAT? Note: I am not actually seeing anything in the firewall logs after stopping the service, but even packets sent localhost on the host machine never arriving on these other random ports.

• Need to scale quickly. Which cloud service should I use?

  Traffic to my facebook app is growing at an insane rate and I need some suggestions on how to scale. I'm probably not going to even be able to keep it running by the day's end, as it's hosted from my already overloaded dedicated server. I need to either move it to its own box or a cloud service like e2c. Something like e2c seems like the way to go, but my server admin skills are terrible. Is there a good front end management UI for e2c or another hosting service that is comparable in cost that is fully managed? I don't mind going with something a bit more expensive now if that means I can get everything switched over and running within 24 hours.

• IP Helper service uses 50-60% CPU every 1 minute for 3-4 seconds on Windows 7

  I have checked everything - all the processes in the process explorer. IP Helper service is causing CPU usage of over 50 % every 1 minute for 3-4 seconds then comes back to normal. In the task manager, the process is svchost.exe and the service is iphlpsvc. Where can I find a full list of all error codes returned, and a description of what they mean?

• WCF - problem with local service (The server has rejected the client credentials.)

  Hi, I have a simple setup, a WPF application running on the machine and a WCF service hosted within a Windows Service on the same machine (always on the same machine). When i debug on one computer i can easily access the local WCF Service. When i run it on another machine i get an error: "The server has rejected the client credentials." Some of my observations are, that at my local machine i have no domain/network. Its my home machine. When at a customers site, it will not run, and gives the above error. Anyone got any ideas on why this is different on these computers? /Brian

• Can a .Net 1.1 client call a .Net 2.0 web service? If so, how?

  We have finally upgraded our web services from .Net 1.1 to .Net 2.0/3.5. One of the clients that calls these web services is run as a windows service. It is probable that the server will be upgraded at customer sites and the windows service will not (at least for some time). Is it possible to massage my .Net 2.0 web services so they will correctly service the calls from the .Net 1.1 client? It doesn't happen in my test environment and I can't find any docs about it online. Thanks for your help, -colin-

I've followed the following tutorial: http://channel9.msdn.com/shows/Endpoint/Endpoint-Screencasts-Creating-Your-First-WCF-Client/ Since Silverlight 4 was incompatible with the WSHttpBinding, I changed it to BasicHttpBinding. Unfortunately I keep getting this error now: "An error occurred while trying to make a request to URI'**'.This could be due to attempting to access a service in a cross-domain way without a proper cross-domain policy in place, or a policy that is unsuitable for SOAP services. You may need to contact the owner of the service to publish a cross-domain policy file and to ensure it allows SOAP-related HTTP headers to be sent." I placed clientaccesspolicy.xml in the root directory of the WCF project (which is in the same solution as the Silverlight client). This did not solve the problem. What do I need to do?

The exception pops up saying that it is unhandled, and then the service stops. I even tried putting some code in the event handler, in case it was getting optimized away. Is this not the proper way to set up unhandled exception handling in a windows service?

Now, I tried to create an ASP.NET web application and consume the service. After enabling <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true"/> in the config file, the error message is "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." How do I modify the service to work with ASP.NET? Thanks!

I am new to REST. Can i not consume it in my managed bean? If the only way to consume the webservice is through javascript, can anybody here give me details of how to consume it through JQuery?   I'm just getting into Factory Girl and I am running into a difficulty that I'm sure should be much easier. I just couldn't twist the documentation into a working example. Assume I have the following models: class League < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :teams end class Team < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :league has_many :players end class Player < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :team end What I want to do is this: team = Factory.build(:team_with_players) and have it build up a bunch of players for me. I tried this: Factory.define :team_with_players, :class => :team do |t| t.sequence {|n| "team-#{n}" } t.players {|p| 25.times {Factory.build(:player, :team => t)} } end But this fails on the :team=>t section, because t isn't really a Team, it's a Factory::Proxy::Builder. I have to have a team assigned to a player. In some cases I want to build up a League and have it do a similar thing, creating multiple teams with multiple players. What am I missing?

I have this: ServiceController svc = new ServiceController("MyWindowsService", "COMPUTER_NAME"); With this, I can get the status of the Windows Service like this: string status = svc.Status.ToString(); But I can't control the Windows Service (by doing svc.Start(); or svc.Stop();). I get the following exception: Cannot open Servicexxx service on computer 'COMPUTER_NAME' That's normal, I suppose there is something to do with access permissions. But how? I've looked into Google but didn't find what I was looking for. However I often read something related to impersonation, but I don't know what that means. NB: The local and remote computers are both running Win XP Pro. Thanks.

• Building a formset dynamically

  I initially wrote code to build a form dynamically, based on data from the DB, similar to what I described in my previous SO post. As SO user Daniel Roseman points out, he would use a formset for this, and now I've come to the realization that he must be completely right. :) My approach works, basically, but I can't seem to get validation across the entire form to be working properly (I believe it's possible, but it's getting quite complex, and there has to be a smarter way of doing it = Formsets!). So now my question is: How can I build a formset dynamically? Not in an AJAX way, I want each form's label to be populated with an FK value (team) from the DB. As I have a need for passing parameters to the form, I've used this technique from a previous SO post. With the former approach, my view code is (form code in previous link): def render_form(request): teams = Team.objects.filter(game=game) form_collection = [] for team in teams: f = SuggestionForm(request.POST or None, team=team, user=request.user) form_collection.append(f) Now I want to do something like: def render_form(request): teams = Team.objects.filter(game=game) from django.utils.functional import curry from django.forms.formsets import formset_factory formset = formset_factory(SuggestionForm) for team in teams: formset.form.append(staticmethod(curry(SuggestionForm, request.POST or None, team=team, user=request.user))) But the append bit doesn't work. • Using HTTP status codes to reflect success/failure of Web service request?

  I'm implementing a Web service that returns a JSON-encoded payload. If the service call fails -- say, due to invalid parameters -- a JSON-encoded error is returned. I'm unsure, however, what HTTP status code should be returned in that situation. On one hand, it seems like HTTP status codes are for HTTP: even though an application error is being returned, the HTTP transfer itself was successful, suggesting a 200 OK response. On the other hand, a RESTful approach would seem to suggest that if the caller is attempting to post to a resource, and the JSON parameters of the request are invalid somehow, that a 400 Bad Request is appropriate. I'm using Prototype on the client side, which has a nice mechanism for automatically dispatching to different callbacks based on HTTP status code (onSuccess and onFailure), so I'm tempted to use status codes to indicate service success or failure, but I'd be interested to hear if anyone has opinions or experience with common practice in this matter.   I have a web service deployed on tomcat hosted on a remote server. I have set it up such that it can be accessed only via HTTPS. For this, I generated a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and used it to get a temporary certificate from VeriSign. My web service client is on my local machine. If I try to access the service it will throw a javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException:unable to find valid certification path to requested target If I install the certificate in to local Java's keystore, the issue will be resolved. My question is if I install a valid SSL certificate from a CA in to my tomcat server, will I get this client-side error even if I do not import the certificate to local key store?

  I have a WCF service returning JSON to jQuery ajax calls and presenting the results on an ASPX page. When the page is NOT under SSL, the ajax calls work perfectly. When the page IS under SSL, the calls fail. I understand that this behavior must be due to the Same Origin Policy (SOP). So, how do I setup my WCF service to accept calls from an SSL-secured page?   hejdig. SC.exe and InstallUtil both install/uninstall windows services. But they don't seem to work the same way. What is the difference? For instance InstallUtil fails (some file or dependency not found error) while Sc create happily installs the service. Too add to the strangeness; the service doesn't show up if I run net start in the console. But it does show up in the services GUI. Variants of this happen when I try to uninstall. I have written the service myself and earlier versions work. Dotnet3.5. /OF

  Firstly, I am not at all familiar with windows batch file programing. Recently I am curious about how tomcat sets itself as a windows service using a batch file. I downloaded the service.bat file from tomcat 6. However, I still don't understand some part of it. I guess this is the line that the batch actually register the exe file to the OS, is it right? • Custom http service responds fine to local IP address but NOT to localhost or 127.0.0.1

  I'm trying to connect to a custom http service written by another developer. The service responds fine on a local IP address and port number. Such as: http://10.1.1.1:1234 but it does NOT respond to http://localhost:1234 or http://127.0.0.1:1234 The service is a simple single function application written in VC++ that takes an http post string and returns another string. I'm trying to all it from C# using HttpWebRequest.GetResponse, but I can reproduce the same problem manually from a web browser... Test environment is Windows 2008 Server. Bottom line I'm looking for some troubleshooting tips to help the other developer fix his code.
