• Quickly set up a Windows Server and automatically install and configure software

  Yesterday I spent far too much time downloading and installing software on Windows Server 2008. I only had to install a simple server for SQL Server 2008 Express using Microsoft's Web Platform Installer, then configure it to enable remote connections. Everything had to be attended, wasting my time. On a Linux system, this would be trivial to automate, but this is Windows. I do this very rarely, but in the future I would like to make this take as little time as possible. I could do a disc image with everything I installed and configured, but is there a better way? I know nothing of advanced deployment techniques on Windows. Ideally I would like to be able to remotely re-install the OS, or have an unattended install (which I know is possible). Any tips to make the software I need easier to and install and configure with minimal interaction necessary would be helpful. I don't expect everything I asked for to be possible and easy to do. Basically, If any part of it can be done quicker or at least without user input, that's what I'm looking for.

• Number of routers in small community lock up and require reboot.

  I live in a small town which has one primary ISP. Lately I have noticed that a number of wireless routers have been locking up and requiring a reboot before allowing any connections. This has affected two of my routers, my work router, and a few others. In all cases wired continued to function as usual. Often wireless clients can see the SSID but simply won't connect. I can only think of a few possibilities and was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction: Our ISP is well known to be flaky, something they are doing is causing this, what that might be I have no clue it as seems to affect the wireless only. There's a power issue in town, given our remote location and reputation for crap electrical, this seems reasonable. Only one router was plugged in to a UPS, and I'm not sure of the quality. There is some bug in all the different firmware for every one of these routers (all different). That doesn't seem reasonable, unless; it's an unknown (or known) exploit or DoS of some sort being launched by a massive team of ninjas hell bent on forcing us all to be tethered to our walls by ethernet cables or; it's just been a coincidence and I'm just paranoid (this has some weight, I mean read 4 again). Anyone else experience similar issues and have some tips?

• Backup Exec tape rotation guidelines

  Hi We use Backup Exec to take care of our backups for our data server, exchange server, and one more set of systems. Each of these 3 is being done on a separate "set" of tapes. Our goal is to be able to roll back a full 2 weeks, with 1 full backup each weekend and differential/incremental backups in between (the difference between the two in our case isn't very big, because the employees mostly use a very similar set of files throughout the week). While playing around with the settings on how to achieve this, we set the time for BE to keep the full backup to 14 days, but because we have too much data this would require manual intervention each time to erase a certain tape and use that. What I would like to know is what kind of guidelines, tricks, tips and general "stuff to think about" you keep in mind when designing your backup schedule. The type of backups (full/diff/incr) isn't of that much importance in our case as it's more or less set in stone. Made this community wiki as it's not a very specific question. Thanks in advance!

• Custom Extensions on Managed Chromebooks

  I am a developer looking for the best way to set up different schools with their own custom, private extensions (ie School A should be the only one with access to Extension A). Theoretically, I am aware that there are a few ways to get a custom, private extension pushed out on a domain: Host the .crx on a server and click "Specify a Custom App" in the management console. Create a Domain App by uploading a zip to the Chrome Web Store Upload the extension from my developer account to the Chrome Web Store and publish to a single "trusted tester," or make it unlisted Option (1), hosting the .crx, has not been working. I am not sure why, but the extension is simply not pushing out. I link directly to the crx file, which has the right ID and MIME type, still, no dice. If anyone has any tips or suggestions for getting this to work, I would love to hear them! Option (2), having the school create a domain app, seems a bit inefficient because it requires all schools to upload their own zip. So essentially I would have to email a zip file to the school, and have them publish it. All updates to the extension will also require a similar process, so this doesn't seem ideal. I doubt that option (3) would work. If I published to the admin as a "trusted tester", I don't think that the other people in the domain would be able to access it. If it is unlisted, I do not know how an admin could find it in the Chrome Web Store dialog. Also, I would rather avoid security through obscurity. Has anyone had success with hosting the extension and using the Specify a Custom App feature? Any other suggestions for getting a Custom Extension pushed out by the management console? • Why does my Belkin Play router regularly stop working for a few minutes at a time?

  I recently purchased a Belking Play dual-band router for my home. About every few hours, the router stops working or "cuts out" for several minutes before coming back online automatically. My old one did this as well. I figured out a main problem was my wireless home phone, which sends a 2.4GHz signal. Anytime someone would call the phone, my router would get interrupted. Therefore, I unplugged this phone and got a wired phone. Unfortunately, my wired phone has the same problem. Therefore, I unplugged the wired phone. Unfortunately, my router still has regular issues. I live in a home with neighbors within close proximity to me, so it might be possible that their devices are the ones causing me problems. How can I determine what is causing my router problems? I thought that the point of a dual-band router was that if a signal was interfering on one band then it would be uninterrupted on another. However, it seems that is not the case. Does anyone have any tips on how to troubleshoot this or any knowledge you can share to properly set my expectations?

• CC.NET + SVN : Server certificate issue

  I am trying to setup Continuous Integration in our office. Being a puny little developer I am facing this supposedly infamous problem: " Source control operation failed: svn: OPTIONS of 'https://trunkURL': Server certificate verification failed: issuer is not trusted" So I tried the following solution - Run CC.NET service (server running as win service) using a domain account (rather than default LOCAL SYSTEMS) and accept cert permanently using command prompt under that user by using svn log/list on the repo. Doesn't help :(. • Can't access WordPress blog after host changed IP address of server

  My host changed servers and all websites now have a new IP address. I have the same domain name and I assume the host runs the same nameservers, though my host and domain name provider are different. Notes: I never entered a Name or description under General/Settings for my blog. I left them both blank. That is when I could log into it. The wp-config file, has localhost entered rather than a specific IP. Again this has always been the case and my host never advised otherwise. I can get into cPanel by simply putting the newly advised IP in front of /Cpanel. However, I can not reach the admin panel of my WordPress blog (version 2.8.2). I had been loggin into it via http://xx.xx.xxx.xx/~example/blog/wp-login.php. My host suggested to simply insert the new IP in place of the old one. I still get the error message: 404 Not Found The server can not find the requested page: Apache/2.0.63 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.63 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.12 Server at 74.50.108.14 Port 80 I followed some tips on a question on Stack Overflow of a similar nature. I have logged into phpMyAdmin and found the wp-options table and searched for SELECT * FROM `wp_options` WHERE `option_name` IN ('siteurl', 'home') Only option ID 39 came up and the results are: Home has optionvalue http://example.org siteurl has optionvalue http://example.org/blog Both of which appear correct. Is there any part of the MySQL tables where I can change an actual IP address? Or is there something else you can advise?

• Metacity/Compiz not staring upon Login Ubuntu 10.10

  TLDR: As of this afternoon, I do not have a window manager when I login to Ubuntu 10.10. I would like to have window manager on login without needing to add to startup. Just started using linux again as my home OS. (Used it for a long time years ago but been on windows up until this past weekend) so this may be kind of n00b-ish :) Anyways, up until today, everything on my machine was running okay. I did not have compiz running as the default wm because I'm running NVidia Drivers and Xinerama (and as I understand Xinerama & Compiz don't work well together). I made no changes to my xorg / etc but today when I logged in, I had to manually start metacity from command line to get any window manager. Really not sure what would be causing this or what I can do to get it working again. My xorg.conf is available here: https://gist.github.com/845618. My default Window Manager is set to /usr/bin/metacity in Configuration Editor under /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager. p.s. Any tips on how to run 3 monitors where I can move windows between screens without Xinerama would be appreciated but that's prolly for another thread :)

  How to make an "import image" button/field in a PDF form? I am designing a "Lost Pet" poster for a local animal shelter. The idea is to make a PDF file that users of the shelter's website can download, insert their pet's information, and then print it out if their pet goes missing. I will be designing the poster in InDesign CS3, and then exporting it to a PDF file. I will then add form fields for the user to fill out. I am ok with making text entry form fields. That is a simple matter. What's not so simple is figuring out a way to allow the user to insert a photo of their lost pet into the PDF, save the file, and then print it out with the photo in it. I am running Adobe Acrobat Professional 8. I am running it on a Mac. All of the searches I've done have told me that if I was running Acrobat in Windows, I'd have access to this other program called LiveCycle Designer which has pre-built form item libraries, including a Image Field. But I cannot find any similar option on the Mac version. Has anyone has any experience doing something like this? If so, I could certainly use some tips on making this work. Just a quick clarification... This is a volunteer design project that I am doing for the shelter, so I don't want to spend money on any extra software/addons at all. I am hoping this can be done somehow with the pre-existing software I have.

• How Do I Stop NFS Clients from Using All of the NFS Server's Resources?

  I have a v4 NFS server running on Ubuntu 12.04LTS. It is the main repository for the web assets that four external nginx webservers mount to serve up to site visitors. These client servers connect to it via a read-only mount. Each of these RO servers has this displayed when I check the mounts: 10.0.0.90:/assets on /var/www/assets type nfs4 (ro,addr=10.0.0.90,clientaddr=0.0.0.0) The NFS master's /etc/exports file contains entries like this for each server: /mnt/lvm-ext4 10.0.0.40(ro,fsid=0,insecure,no_subtree_check,async) The problem that I'm seeing is that these clients are eventually utilizing all the RAM on the NFS server and causing it to crash. If I do a watch free -m I can watch the used memory creep up until it's used and then see the free buffers/cache entry creep down to near zero before the server eventually locks up requiring a reboot. There is some sort of memory leak somewhere that is causing this, and the optimal solution would be to find it and fix it, but in the meantime I need to find a way to have the NFS server protect itself from connected clients using all it's RAM. There must be some sort of setting that limits the resources the clients can use, but I can't seem to find it. I've tried adjusting the values for rsize and wsize but they don't seem to help or be related. Thanks for any tips.

• Constant CMS Session Expiry On 1&1 Cloud Server?

  I have a couple of 1&1's 'Dynamic Cloud Servers' and running Win2008R2 and they are setup as web servers, I have a number of Umbraco CMS installs on them and they have been running fine for over a year. On Saturday on BOTH servers, a very strange thing happened - As soon as I login to the CMS/Umbraco admin I am logged out with about 5 seconds? It's as if my session expires the moment I login? I have checked everything I can as I'm not really a server admin, and everything seems to be exactly as it was last week? Like I say this has happened EXACTLY the same time (Saturday) on TWO different servers? I'm just looking for ideas of what I should be looking for? Also the front end of the sites seem fine... Its only the backend when I login. I have gone to 1&1 about this, and as usual they have washed their hands saying its nothing to do with them - When I am certain it is. How can this happen on two different servers, and affect the same sites in exactly the same way? Any help, tips, things to try would be greatly appreciated.

• Effective Permissions displays incorrect information

  I have a security mystery :) Effective permissions tab shows that a few sampled users (IT ops) have any and all rights (all boxes are ticked). The permissions show that Local Administrators group has full access and some business users have too of which the sampled users are not members of. Local Administrators group has some AD IT Ops related groups of which the sampled users, again, appear not be members. The sampled users are not members of Domain Administrators either. I've tried tracing backwards (from permissions to user) and forwards (user to permission) and could not find anything. At this point, there are three options: I've missed something and they are members of some groups. There's another way of getting full permissions. Effective Permissions are horribly wrong. Is there a way to retrieve the decision logic of Effective Permissions? Any hints, tips, ideas? UPDATE: The winning answer is number 3 - Effective Permissions are horribly wrong. When comparing outputs as ran from the server logged on as admin and when running it as a regular user from remote computer show different results: All boxes (FULL) access and on server - None. Actually testing the access, of course, denies access.

• HTC Diamond Touch sync problem

  I have a HTC Diamond Touch with all my contacts etc. on it. Did however not use it for 6mo while being abroad. When I start the phone now I realize that the touch screen has stopped working. I have tried restarting, soft resetting, shutting it off etc but the touch just wont follow commands. However, I can manage the phone by buttons so it's not frozen. Hence I can get into the phone and watch contacts but not use it to call etc. The problem is, how do I get my 300 contacts out of the thing!? When I'm plugging in the phone, it lets me choose between "Sync with Outlook" and "Use as storage device". It automatically selects "Use as storage device". Now, I cannot choose to sync it with the buttons. I can not change this option afterwards either. In short, I have a phone with all of my contact data and am completely unable to get that out of it. Any tips/help/suggestions? If possible, preferably one that does not including sending the phone to a hardware workshop for three weeks in order to get it fixed:)

• Improve wireless performance

  Hello, I have a Trust Speedshare Turbo Pro router, which is running on channel 6. I found that the wireless signal (and network performance) dramatically drops from my PDA (I can barely attach to the network, even if I set the PDA's energy settings to maximum wireless performance) when I even exit my room, and I don't have shielded walls or something like that. I can't even stream a SD video from my desktop (connected via LAN) to my laptop using WiFi, while via LAN it works fine. I read that changing router's channel could improve performance due to interference reducing. I found that almost all wireless networks around here run on channels 6 and 11. I tried to go to my router's settings page to change channel, but I found that the combo box only allows me to select 6!! I'm not sure, but I may have been able in the past to change channel, though not to all of the available channels. A few minutes ago I tried a firmware upgrade, but it didn't solve my problem. My question is Is it possible that my router is someway locked to its channel? I bought it on my own, I didn't receive it from my ISP Apart from boosting the antenna power to the maximum (which, by the way, increases the EM radiation my and my family's bodies absorb 24/7 and is little more environment-unfriendly), do you have any tips on getting high quality transmission up to 5 metres from the antenna? • How to download Vim script on the command-line?

  Whenever I want to install a new Vim script on the Linux server I'm working on, my typical workflow is as the following: surf the plugin's homepage in Vim online using FireXXXX download a right version of the plugin to my laptop by click some highlighted link upload the downloaded plugin from my laptop to Linux server using WinSCP which is really inconvenient. I don't know what is the magic behind this: I mean for the same hyperlink I click it in web browser. I can let you download it but use Wget plus the hyperlink in Linux command-line will end up with nothing but an error indication. Hyperlink in the web browser. Otherwise I can get the link in web browser and then use Wget or some similar tool to actually do the downloding. I try new cool Vim scripts quite ofte , so you can imagine my dismay when I have to repeat the tedious action all the time. What are some tips which can let me download the Vim scripts in a more "professional" way? Post edit: My problem is not find a tool like Wget or cURL. The problem I met is quite specific; to use these tools to download a Vim script. Let's take http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=30 as an example. It's the normal place where one can get the script, at least for me. But I can't find an working URL from this page that can feed to Wget.

• Java: very slow tomcat and too big war file

  I created some sort of RESTful API backend for a mobile app. It's written completely in Java using Jersey as Framework. At the moment no database is used, it's all in the memory, but this is no problem so far (it's only for prototyping purposes). I ordered the smallest package from digital ocean and installed tomcat7. All in all tomcat works, but I have three major problems: 1) It takes a long time until tomcat deploys the app: I deploy it per tomcat manager and it takes about 2 minutes unit the site works (excl. war upload time). 2) The war files are quite big (16MB): I don't know why they are so big. There are no database dependencies and most logic is written in plain java. Okay, we are using jersey, but 16MB are a lot for the logic of a small webservice. 3) I have to restart tomcat all 3 days or so. It looks like a memory leak or something similar. If the app runs for a few days the response time is quite high and the server seems to be frozen. It works again, if I restart tomcat per ssh. You can find my mvn pom file right here. Do you have some tips? Are there good tomcat alternatives?

• How to play individual albums in iTunes?

  I know of two ways to play one specific album in iTunes: Do a search that's specific enough to include just that album and no other tracks; press a "Play album" button. (Doesn't work in cover flow or list view.) Go to list view; turn on column browser; in View/Column Browser, make sure "Albums" is showing; double-click an album name. These are fine as far as they go, but: Double-clicking an album in cover flow will play the album, and then keep going (in alphabetical order). That's no good. In playlists like "Purchased" or "Recently Added", you can either view and play whole albums, or sort by date added; you can't do both. In general, there's no straightforward way to get from a track in a playlist to the whole album it belongs to. What I would really, really like, would be to right-click on any song or album cover, anywhere, and choose "Play album". While I'm waiting for Apple to add that, any tips for simple album-centric listening?

• Autounmounting USB keys with FAT filesystem on Linux (RHEL5)

  For security reasons, I have two workstations i front of me, and I can only transfer data between them through a USB key. As you can imagine, it can get quickly tiresome, but the most annoying is having to unmount the things before removing them. Not umounting them results in missing files most of the time, even if I remove them a while after having last written to them. Now, since they're only used for transferring smallish files, and each are basically written once and read once, I don't need the fancy pansy caching infrastructure that makes clean unmounting a necessary step. And since the data is always a copy of something I have at hand, I don't care if the filesystem croaks from time to time. But anyway the system doesn't need to force that on me, it could simply make sure everything is committed with a second, and works synchronously. Then when I remove the key, nothing is lost. Is there a way to do this? I would appreciate any other tips on handling this situation. Edit: it appears the situation has changed between RHEL5 and Fedora up to F11 on one hand, and F12 on the other. The latter use DeviceKit-disk, and I haven't quite figured out how to do this. The method provided below in gconf does not work anymore.

• CMD/ADB - Autorun script to search, copy, and paste a file from android system to flash drive

  I've looked around and can't find anything that answers my question. This is my first question, so any tips or thoughts are welcome, as well as an answer :p As explained in title, i want to create a script that launches, finds a file on android phone, copies it, and pastes it to a flash drive. As of right now, it's a mix of multiple tutorials, trial and error, and I'm at a point of giving up. As of right now, I have a flash drive, loaded with three scripts. Then run this scrip. Yes i'm trying to pull the database to copy all my email contacts. I use launch.bat, which then makes file.bat invisible due to the invisible.vbs script. What would i need to do now to have the file searched for and copied to the flashdrive? • is a wildcard SSL the only option in this multiple VHOST/1IP setup?

  I have a web app set up that needs the following SSL encryption: secure.myapp.com -> SSL www.myapp.com/login -> SSL www.myapp.com/signup -> SSL If I'm correct, I could run one SSL certificate for my whole www.myapp.com/* pages. The problem is that I have a subdomain called secure.myapp.com that either needs to be on a separate IP address to work with SSL. Right now I have one server, one public IP and a number of Virtual Hosts in apache to make this work. I'd rather not buy an expensive Wildcard SSL certificate to secure just one subdomain. What is your advice on this? If it IS the only solution any tips on getting a price worthy wildcard SSL cert is appreciated. I have read about SNI that allows the use of multiple SSL certs, but not all browsers (IE6!) support this. Since we are building a web app for the public, we cannot have IE6 to run on unencrypted connections. Thanks for you help

  I have two instances of mssql 2005 and am using CA XOSoft replication. The master is a failover cluster and the replica is a standalone server. They are all running Server 2003 sp2 x64. Same patch levels on all servers. This setup has worked great for several months until we recently restricted the RPC ports on both nodes of the master(5000 - 6000 using rpccfg.exe). We have to implement egress filtering, thus the limiting of the ports. We began receiving login errors for sql windows authentication and NETLOGON Event ID: 5719: This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain due to the following: Not enough storage is available to process this command. This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator. We also see group policies failing to update and cluster file shares go offline at the same time. The RPC ports were set back to default when we started seeing these problems and the servers rebooted, but the problems persist. The domain controllers are not showing any errors. Running dcdiag and netdiag shows everything is fine. We have noticed that the XOSoft service ws_rep.exe is using a lot of handles(8 - 9k), about the same number that sqlserver is using. As soon as xosoft replication is stopped the login errors cease and everything functions correctly. I have opened a ticket with CA for XOSoft, but I'm not sure that the problem is actually xosoft, but that it is the one bringing the problem to light. I'm looking for tips on debugging RPC problems. Specifically on limiting the ports and then reverting the changes.

I started at $8 interning, and now I'm up to $13. What I am trying to figure out is how to survey what others are making in similar positions so I can take it to the review as a base number. here are my thoughts on my position right now. Review Thoughts My Qualifications: • Associates of applied Science - IT network Specialist • CompTIA A+ certification • CompTIA Server+ certification • CompTIA Network+ certification • Currently pursuing Cisco certifications • Junior status at Insert college Pursuing Bachelors in Information Technology with an emphasis in Networking. 3.4 GPA • 1 year of working at Insert Company. • Virtualize SBS 2003 - P2V vs migrating to new VM

  I need to virtualize a SBS 2003 server in my work environment. I need some tips on what people think is the best way to proceed. Background: The SBS 2003 server is the primary DC for the domain and also hosts FTP, RRAS(VPN), DNS, and file shares. Exchange is NOT used, neither is SQL server. DHCP is done via a firewall appliance. I have added a Server 2003 VM to the domain and promoted it to the DC role. AD/DNS is replicating here correctly. This was mainly done to provide fault-tolerance to the domain, I was not intending to make this VM the primary DC. I've already asked about buying upgraded licensing for Server 2008/2012 but was refused due to cost. Options: I see (at least) two routes I could take to complete this. From what I've read option 2 is the "preferred" method, but there's a few steps where I'm not clear on what to expect. Option 1.) P2V the primary DC Power off primary DC Power off secondary DC (to prevent USN rollback in case P2V has issue) P2V (cold clone) primary DC Boot new PDC VM Allow new hardware to detect Remove old NIC hardware from device manager Assign old IPs to new virtual NICs Reboot PDC VM, confirm connectivity and no major issues Power on secondary DC, confirm replication Option 2.) Create new VM, transfer roles, remove original DC from domain Create new VM, install SBS 2003 Do I need the original SBS install discs for this? MS migration doc mentions this. • Outlook signature distribution tools ?

  Hi We are soon changing our corporate identity, and as such we will need to change our outlook signatures. However, being some 125 people, my colleague sysadmin and I don't want to go around changing these manually, and are thus looking for a good way to do this fully automated. Most of our desktops are XP, with the exceptional few running Win7. Most run Outlook 2007, some run 2003. Our environment is AD-centered, and most of the information will come from AD (telephone number, title, ...). The biggest problem I can see so far is that because we are bilingual (Dutch and French), there will be 2 versions of the signature, depending on what the person has as main language. People currently do not have anything in AD to distinguish this, but we could create a group for it, or perhaps add some sort of attribute. A cheap if not free tool would be great. eMailSignature could probably do most, if not all, of this for us but it's a rather expensive tool costing some 1250 euro. We just want to distribute the signatures, actual "management" is less important as job titles don't change all that much. Any tips are welcome!
