• Package information was last updated 59 days ago even though Ubuntu is up to date

  I'm using ubuntu 11.10 and in the update manager I have a message that says package information last updated 59 days ago press the check button to check for software updates I do that, but i'm up to date. I checked other threads with this same problem, and saw i should do sudo apt-get update in a terminal to see which repository is not up to date and when I did, I got this message: Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/Release Then I checked for this repository in software sources but couldn't find this specific one. In my /etc/apt/sources.list.d I have only one line: deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu oneiric partner #Added by software-center So now I don't know what to do more. Should I upgrade to 12.04 and will it solve my problem? I wouldn't want to upgrade if there is a problem in the last version but I don't know much about Ubuntu so, can anyone help me please? • mysql_connect() causes page to not display (WAMP)

  I currently have a website running MySQL and PHP in which this is all working. I've tried installing WAMPServer to be able to work on the site on my own computer, but I have been having issues trying to get the site to work correctly. HTML and PHP files work correctly (by going to http://localhost/index.php, etc.). But some of the pages display "This Webpage is not available" (in Chrome) or "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage", which leads me to think there is an error is the server, as when the page doesn't exist, it typically dispays "Oops! This link appears to be broken" or IE's standard 404 page. Each page in my site has an include() call to set up an instance of a class to handle all database transactions. This class opens the connection to the database in its constructor. I have found commenting out the contents of the constructor will allow the page to load, although this understandably causes errors later in the page. This is the contents of the included file: class dbAccess { private $db; function __construct() { $this->db = mysql_connect("externalURL","user","password") or die ("Connection for database not found."); mysql_select_db("dbName", $this->db) or die ("Database not selected"); } ... } As a note for what's happening here. I'm attempting to use the database on my site, rather than the local machine. The actual values of externalURL, dbName, user, and password work when I plug them into my database software and the file fine of the site, so I don't think the issue is with those values themselves, but rather some setting with Apache or Wamp. The issue persists if I try a local database as well. For the first line, isLoggedIn (from the first line) is a method of the class above. Assuming that the connection works, this error should disappear. I've tried searching for solutions online, but haven't been able to find anything to help. If you need any further information to help solve this issue, feel free to ask for it. (One more note, I don't even have Skype on this computer, so I can't see it being an issue, as this conflict seems to be the default response for any Wamp issue.) • Set up linux box for hosting a-z

  I am in the process of reinstalling the OS on a machine that will be used to host a couple of apps for our business. The apps will be local only; access from external clients will be via vpn only. The prior setup used a hosting control panel (Plesk) for most of the admin, and I was looking at using another similar piece of software for the reinstall - but I figured I should finally learn how it all works. I can do most of the things the software would do for me, but am unclear on the symbiosis of it all. This is all an attempt to further distance myself from the land of Configuration Programmer/Programmer, if at all possible. I can't find a full walkthrough anywhere for what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd put up this question, and if people can help me on the way I will edit this with the answers, and document my progress/pitfalls. Hopefully someday this will help someone down the line. The details: CentOS 5.5 x86_64 httpd: Apache/2.2.3 mysql: 5.0.77 (to be upgraded) php: 5.1 (to be upgraded) The requirements: SECURITY!! Secure file transfer Secure client access (SSL Certs and CA) Secure data storage Virtualhosts/multiple subdomains Local email would be nice, but not critical The Steps: Download latest CentOS DVD-iso (torrent worked great for me). Install CentOS: While going through the install, I checked the Server Components option thinking I was going to be using another Plesk-like admin. In hindsight, considering I've decided to try to go my own way, this probably wasn't the best idea. Basic config: Setup users, networking/ip address etc. Yum update/upgrade. Upgrade PHP/MySQL: To upgrade PHP and MySQL to the latest versions, I had to look to another repo outside CentOS. IUS looks great and I'm happy I found it! • I'd like to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit within same version

  I have a 32-bit installation of 11.10 on my 64-bit (4 GB) home AMD system. I have recently read up a bit on 64-bit version, and it seems that it would be a marginally better choice now for me. I have read about several methods to help reinstall all the various apps, using either dpkg's get-selections/set-selections and dselect in various ways, or using synaptic's save/get markings. The problem here is that I've read several variations, and I'm not sure which is best. I have enough disk space to do this with a brand new partition, so I'm not too worried about destroying anything, but I don't really want to make it my life's work, hence my appeal for expert tips. Since it's the same version, would it be safe to copy configuration files from the 32-bit system? I'd guess my home directory and /etc might be enough, and would save at least most of the time to reconfigure. But are there difference in configuration files in either of these directories for 32 vs 64 bits that might cause problems? After reinstalling to 64-bit, I can then continue along the 64 bit path for upgrades, but I thought it would be easier to switch the same version, than to try to reinstall apps and upgrade at the same time. Some methods I've seen suggested, among others: A. From Ubuntu forums On your old system (assuming it is still working), start up Synaptic and go: File->Save Markings and choose a file name along with a location (like a USB drive) that you can use when you have installed your new system). You need to check on the bottom: "Save full state, not only changes" This file contains a list of all your currently installed packages, and when you have installed and booted up your new system (and configured your repositories to the best for your location - as we all do, don't we?) then start up Synaptic and go: File-Read Markings and point it at your saved file, and after that has completed then select Apply to kick off the download & installation of all of those packages you had installed previously! B. From the same discussion: According to section 6.4.9 of the Debian Reference Manual, the following will save both the list of packages installed and their debconf configuration: # dpkg --get-selections "*" >myselections # or use \* # debconf-get-selections > debconfsel.txt and the following will reinstall and reconfigure them: # dselect update # debconf-set-selections < debconfsel.txt # dpkg --set-selections <myselections # apt-get -u dselect-upgrade # or dselect install C. • UIWebView: webViewDidStartLoad/webViewDidFinishLoad delegate methods not called when loading certain URLs

  I have basic web browser implemented using a UIWebView. I've noticed that for some pages, none of the UIWebViewDelegate methods are called. An example page in which this happens is: http://www.youtube.com/user/google. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue (make sure you insert NSLog calls in your controller's UIWebViewDelegate methods): Load the above youtube URL into the UIWebView [notice that here, the UIWebViewDelegate methods do get called when the page loads] Touch the "Uploads" category on the page Touch any video in that category [issue: notice that a new page is loaded, but none of the UIWebView delegates are called] I know that this is not an issue of UIWebView's delegate not being set properly, since the delegate methods do get invoked when loading other links (e.g. if you try clicking on a link that takes you outside of youtube, you'll notice the delegate methods getting called). My gut feeling initially was that it might be because the page is loaded using AJAX, which may not invoke the delegate method. But then when I checked Safari, it did not exhibit this problem, so it must be something on my side. I've also noticed that Three20's TTWebController has the exact same issue as I'm having. But the problem that arises from this issue is that without the delegate methods called, I'm unable to update the UI to enable/disable the back and forward browsing buttons when new requests are loaded. And idea why this is happening or how can I work around it to update the UI when a new request is made?

• Upgraded to 11.10 lost personal folders, Ubuntu one shows no files

  Upgraded to 11.04, from 10.10 system would only come up in terminal mode, but it told me that an additional upgrade was available and did I want to do that. Foolishly thinking that might fix the problem, I said yes. This time it did not make it all the way through the upgrade, when I came back to the computer over an hour later, the screen was filled with an error message "could not open display", had to reboot. Went to recovery mode on reboot to install nvidia module, when I rebooted system came up fine, but without carrying over my personal folders, I have the home folder, but no personal named folder in it. Came to Ubuntu One, but gives error message; File Sync error. (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked Is the a way around this in order to restore my files? I know my files existed on Ubuntu one as of a few months ago.

  I'm having problems mounting ext4 partitions(inside a LUKS partition) in external drives. The drives are fine, there is no problem whatsoever with the drives and no filesystem corruption. This happened since a recent automatic system upgrade, and a manual upgrade to kernel 3.12.0. It goes like this: I plug in the external drive Passphrase is asked for luks device luks partition correctly unlocked/opened Instead of proceding with mounting the now exposed ext4 partition there's a pop-up saying: "the unlocked device does not have a recognizable filesystem on it". Same happens in this case: $ gvfs-mount -d /dev/sdc2 Enter a passphrase to unlock the volume The passphrase is needed to access encrypted data on WDC WD250... (250 GB Hard Disk). Password: Error mounting /dev/sdc2: The unlocked device does not have a recognizable file system on it Doing a manual sudo mount /dev/dm-1 /mnt/testfolder works with no errors and there is no problem with the filesystem (fscked). Also there doesn’t seem to be anything useful written to dmesg when this happens. What gives?

• Calling 32 bit unmanaged dlls from C# randomly failing

  Hi, I'm having an issue when calling 32 bit delphi dll's from c# web site. The code generally runs fine, but occasionally I get an error Unable to load DLL '': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E). This issue persists until I recycle the app pool for the site, and then it works fine again. On the same server, there is also a web service that is calling the same set of dlls. This web service doesn't seem to have the same issue that the web site has. Both applications are using .net framework 3.5, separate app pools on IIS. Here is the code I'm using to wrap the dlls: public sealed class Mapper { static Mapper instance = null; [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] private static extern bool SetDllDirectory(string lpPathName); private Mapper() { SetDllDirectory(ConfigManager.Path); } public static Mapper Instance { get { if (instance == null) { instance = new Mapper(); } return instance; } } public int Foo(string bar, ref double val) { return Loader.Foo(bar, ref val); } } public static class Loader { [DllImport("some.dll", CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall, CharSet = CharSet.Unicode, EntryPoint = "foo")] public static extern int Foo(string bar, ref double val); } Then I call it like this: double val = 0.0; Mapper.Instance.Foo("bar", ref val); Any ideas as to why it would "randomly" Unable to load DLL '': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E). The other problem is that I haven't been able to replicate the issue in the development environment. I thought that due to 2 applications calling the same dlls, that there could be some locks occurring. To replicate this, I created an app that spawned multiple threads and repeatedly called the 32bit dlls, and then used the web site to call these same dlls. I still couldn't replicate the issue. Some possible fixes that I can think of: Wrap the 32 bit dlls in web service (because the webservice doesn't seem to suffer from the same problem). But this may be worthless if it turns out that the web service also fails. Set up state server for the session state and periodically recycle the app pool for the site.This isn't fixing the problem, only avoiding it. Wrap the dll's in exe, and call that exe. Then I shouldn't get the same issue. But this also seems like a hacky solution. Implement the mapper class differently ? But how else should I be doing the call? The other draw back is that other applications are using this mapper, so I'd need to change there code too. Thanks

  As Java 1.6u31 is not certified for use with EBS or Demantra, you may notice issues in relation to the Java plug-in.  Demantra Development is currently working to certify Java 1.6u31.  They are recommending that you upgrade to that version. EBS customers, should not be installing 1.6u31 as it is not certified.  If you do upgrade your browser, you will either need to downgrade to a lower release of Firefox or find a way of allowing Firefox to use the older version of the Java Plug-in.

• Upgrading visual studio with Crystal Reports

  In the process up updating an app from Visual Studio 2003 to VS 2008.  It happens to have a couple dozen crystal reports that it executes regarly. Upgraded visual studio to 2008, and when attempting to generate the reports an exception was thrown. A significant portion of the rendering engine for Crystal Reports is not coming from Crystal, it's coming from Visual Studio and those methods and properties have changed over the years.  I needed to upgrade the report generating methods from the VS 2003 way of doing things to the VS 2008 way for the report to generate successfully. Not only that, but this means that while we were previously rendering with Crystal 9 in VS 2003, Visual Studio 2008 will render per Crystal 10, which treats things like column widths in Excel different (by default, at least) so now we have to go through all of our reports and compare outputs for Crystal just to upgrade the Visual Studio environment that I foolishly believed would  not be affected.

• Is it normal to these Xcode prompts/errors when you deploy to IOS Simulator from Unity?

  Just trying out the IOS build process.... Is it normal to see: Q1 - "upgrade to latest project format - project currently in Xcode 3.1 format, this will upgrade to 3.2" - just click OK and let Xcode do it's stuff? Q2 - same as Q1 but this time for the message "Remove obsolete build settings - will remove the build setting PREBINDING" Q3 - also when deploying to "Lastest IOS Simulator" you get the Simulator target produced, but also a non-simulator target which has lots of errors. So I assume you just ignore this target and not use it in Xcode correct? (i.e. just use the simulator target that is produced) Q4 - get a lot of warning after the simulator target is built? program works ok however.... • Play framework does not return page and static content

  I'm using play framework in production for one of my web projects. From time to time Play does not render main page or does not return some of the static content files. I have attached few screenshots below. First screenshot displays firebug console, loading of the site is stucked at the beginning, when serving home page. Second screenshot display fiddler console, when 2 static resources are not loading. This issue is hard to reproduce, it happens 1 of 15 time, I have to delete cache data and reload page. (pressing CRTL-F5 in FF). Issue can be reproduced in most of the browsers. Initially, I was thinging that there is something wrong with hosting provider. But I have changed hosting provided and issue has not gone. Version of the play is 1.2.2. Play is running as standalone server. Not sure, but probably deploying Play to Jetty/Tomcat/Resin would help. Also I'm thinging about rewriting application to another stack (well-known for me - j2ee, spring, whatever) I have no idea how to debug and resolve this issue. Any clue ? Has anyone faced same issue with Play before ?

• Ctrl-M chars when transfer files SFTP

  Hi, I am sending files from a windows system to a Unix SFTP server using JSCAPE ftp client. However, I am experiencing the following issue: When uploading a text file from windows to UNiX, each line of text files transferred contains Control-M characters. I did some search and found out that If I use the "ASCII" transfer mode it should solve the issue. But the Ctrl-M is still appearing on the files. Can anyone throw some light in this issue? thanks in advance
