• Which versions of C++ redistributables can I remove?

  I have a number of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 and 2008 Redistributable and I would like to know which ones are safe to remove, because there are actually more than 10 installed on my computers. • how can I discover what keys are being sent when I press a mouse button?

  I'd like to map my Logitech MX Revolution keys in Visual Studio. More importantly, I'd like to do it without installing any software. Is this possible? I specifically want to map the two side buttons to View.NavigateBackward and View.NavigateForward. But I'm not sure what those keys are mapped to right now. I thought they were mapped to Ctrl-Tab and Shift-Ctrl-Tab, since they seem to behave that way in Notepad++, but that isn't working in VS. I'm on the work computer, which means 2 problems: I'm in Windows XP and installing software is frowned upon/monitored.

  I'm trying to map View.NavigateBackward and View.NavigateBackward like so: View.NavigateBackward = Alt + LeftArrow View.NavigateForward = Alt + RightArrow Pretty simple to do in Visual Studio with the Keyboard Options dialog. OK so I've assigned the shortcuts and the NavigateBackward one is working. But NavigateForward, which used to be assigned to Edit.CompleteWord, is staying with its old assignment. I've checked that Edit.CompleteWord is assigned to 'Ctrl+K, W' but the Alt+RightArrow is still behaving as complete word. Is there something special about the arrow keys that I can't assign them? I want to do this so the mouse buttons behave the same in VS 2010 and my web browser. Works fine for the back button, but the forward button won't re-assign properly. Suggestions?

  First time here :) We have a page on the site which ranks well for an SEO term (top 5) but contains old information. We have added a new page but Google doesn't rank it that well. Information on these pages is time sensitive. Old: example.com/2013-related-information.html New: example.com/2014-related-information.html Obvious solution is to delete old page and do a 301 redirect to the new page. Now, can we still keep the old page by giving it a new URL. Step1: example.com/2013-related-information.html is redirect to example.com/2014-related-information.html Step2: example.com/2014-related-information.html is recreated with a new address such as example.com/new-2013-related-information.html What we are trying to do is to send the user to the fresh page but still not wasting the record copy if someone wants to go and dig up old page. • How do I maximize a window in one monitor and do other things on the other monitor

  Hi, I have windows 7 installed on my laptop which is a Dell studio XPS 16. I recently set up a second monitor for it. I've noticed that when I load up "full maximisation" applications (I don't know the term) like a game or media center on one monitor, I can't seem to do anything with the other monitor. With the game, I can see the other monitor, I can play a movie on it even, but if I click the mouse button on it, it'll stop the game and alt-tab away. In Media Center, I can't even cross my mouse over the other monitor. So my question is, in Windows 7, is it possible to run programs like this that are designed to be run in one maximised window and still be able to do things on the other window?

• Help, I need to debug my BrowserHelperObject (BHO) (in C++) after a internet explorer 8 crash in Rel

  Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.

• Incrementing ticket numbers each time I print

  I have an excel sheet where I have a set 4 identical tickets to print per page which we use for stock takes. Rather then creating a huge document with 1000 pages for 4000 tickets each with their own unique ticket number (starting from 1) I would like to find a Macro or function which will print a page with 4 tickets on (1,2,3,4) then continue to print another with (5,6,7,8) and so on. I have found some code that people have already written but it has only applied to one number changing per page rather than 4 simultaneously and being a complete visual basic novice, I was unable to change the code to suit my preferences. If someone could explain simply how I could achieve this I would be very very grateful :)

• What happened to Debug test in current context (Ctrl+R, Ctrl+T) in VS2012?

  One of the hot-keys I used most in Visual Studio 2010 was Ctrl+R, Ctrl+T, which ran the unit test the cursor currently was on in debug mode. I think the command is named "Debug tests in current context". Now, you still have a command named Test.DebugTestsInCurrentcontext, but when I assign it to a key combination and activate it, it always yields "currently not available". I do know that there is a new function in the Test menu named "Debug selected test" - but I think that mappes to the selected tests in the Test Explorer, not the file editor. What gives, Microsoft? Are you removing features?

  I am getting the following error when attempting to build my project in Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition: *Task failed because “sgen.exe” was not found, or the correct Microsoft Windows SDK is not installed. The task is looking for “sgen.exe” in the “bin” subdirectory beneath the location specified in the InstallationFolder value of the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A. You may be able to solve the problem by doing one of the following: 1) Install the Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5. 2) Install Visual Studio 2008. 3) Manually set the above registry key to the correct location. 4) Pass the correct location into the “ToolPath” parameter of the task.* I tried downloading Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5, and still get the error. I also tried downloading the Windows 7 SDK and .NET Framework 3.5 and still same result. I also tried to manually editing the registry to change the InstallationFolder and I tried repairing the Visual Studio install. The project was originally created on WinXP and I am trying to compile on a reformatted machine running Windows 7 Enterprise.

  I have been using Windows 7 for a while but have not had to work with a particular legacy intranet application since my upgrade. Unfortunately, this application is setup as an ASP.NET Website project hosted on a remote server. When I have the website open in Visual Studio 2008 and try to debug it I get the following compiler error: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission' failed To resolve this issue on Windows Vista machines, I would change the machine's .NET Security Configuration trust level to full for the local intranet (fix outlined here). I believe this configuration utility relied upon the mscorcfg.msc which from some cursory research appears to be apart of the .NET 2.0 SDK. I have tried to follow the instructions from this Microsoft Support article running the command below to no avail. It is basically the default Visual Studio color scheme with a dark background and slightly modified colors. • Looking for Antlr Grammar syntaxt highlight in VS2010

  I am looking for some way to edit antlr grammar files directly within VS2010 with syntax highlight. I have used antlrworks a lot but it has the drawback that I have to start antlrworks separately and then browse to the file I want to edit, do the changed and save. For minor fixes I do not need all the tools in Antlrworks but I still would like the syntax highlight. But I have not been able to get VS2010 to open antlrworks with the right file and I have found no other way to get syntax highlight directly within VS2010 editor, it just opens as plain text. I can get visual studio to open antlrworks but it will open with only the last set of files it had open, not the one I clicked on. So my question(s) are: Is there a way to get antlrworks to open with the right file when I double click in it in visual studio project explorer? Is there any other way to get correct syntax highlight for antlr grammar files within visual studio (or with another editor, preferably not one that costs money, but if there are no free ones a commercial one might be an option).

  I'm having a lot of trouble trying to track down the cause of this error message. I have a large Visual Studio 2010 solution which compiles without error on my local machine but on the build server, msbuild fails on one of the projects with the error: fatal error CS0002: Unable to load message string from resources Here's the red error section at the end: Build FAILED. "C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\85eff164854b9e67\Libraries\Domainface.Proxy.Common\Domainface.Proxy.Common.csproj" (default target) (9) -> (CoreCompile target) -> CSC : fatal error CS0002: Unable to load message string from resources. [C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\85eff164854b9e67\Libraries\Domainface.Proxy.Common\Domainface.Proxy.Common.csproj] 0 Warning(s) 1 Error(s) The entire msbuild output from the build server is here: http://pastie.org/3660842 What does the error generally refer to, that would cause it to build locally but not on the build server? UPDATE I have just run msbuild /version on both machines and it turns out the .net framework versions are very slightly different. Local machine is 4.0.30319.488 and build server is 4.0.30319.1. I'm about to run windows update on the server to allow it to install some updates, as several seem to be .net framework-related, so I'll see if that makes a difference. UPDATE Installing the updates didn't help. Just remembered I copied up csc.exe from the async preview a little while ago in order to facilitate async compilation (the actual async preview had failed to install on the server due to visual studio not being there, but installing visual studio team viewer seems to have fixed that, so i've just run the proper async ctp3 installer to see if that makes a difference.

• Expression Blend doesn't recognize comand objects declared in code behind file

  I have a WPF UserControl. The code behind file declares some RoutedUICommand objects which are referenced in the XAML. The application builds and runs just fine. However Expression Blend 3 cannot load the XAML in the designer and gives errors like this one: The member "ResetCameraComand" is not recognized or accessible. The class and the member are both public. Building and rebuilding the project in Blend and restarting Blend hasn't helped. Any ideas what the problem is? • Should we migrate from svn to Team Foundation Server 2010?

  We are with 6 developer and currently use Visual Studio 2008 Professional with SVN and Visual SVN. As soon as vs2010 is released we will upgrade from vs2008 pro to vs2010 premium. However if Team Foundation Server has a proper source control included in vs2010 premium, then it does make sense to use it. We like SVN, but like tight integration of tools even better. On the internet information on SVN versus TFS 2010 seems to be scarce. Hence my question here. EDIT: This video looks very compelling. Is this marketing talk or real? Thank you all for your replies! I absolutely appreciate this. A little more background info. This is our current stack; vs2008 pro, Visual SVN, SVN, Jetbrain Teamcity. My main problem is that we use a lot of tools from different vendors which more or less integrate. Sometime more, mostly less. At least it takes a lot of time to set it up correctly. We currently do not use branches, but we want to. Therefore we have to set up SVN from scratch (we looked into it carefully). So let me rephrase my question: Should we set up SVN or start using TFS?

• Compiling and using NTL c++ library for Windows

  Hi there, I have compiled the NTL inifite precision integer arithmetic library for c++, using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. I did as explained, on this site, using the Visual Studio interface, rather than from the command prompt. Actually I would rather do it from the command prompt, but I was not sure how to. Anyhow, I got the library compiled, and I now want to compile a program using the library, from the command prompt. The program I am trying to compile, has been tested on a linux system, where I compile it with the following c++ -I/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/NTL-5.4.2/include mpqs.cpp main.cpp -o main -L/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/NTL-5.4.2/lib -lntl -L/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/gmp-4.2.1/lib -lgmp -lm Nevermind the gmp stuff, I dont have that installed on Windows. It is purely an optional thing that will make the NTL run faster. Anyhow, this works fine on linux. It is as if, my mpqs.h file is not included into the compilation process? Also I dont understand why it complains about .push_back() for a vector type? Help is much appreciated!
