• Unable to get anything except 403 from a .Net 4.5 website

  Scenario: Clean Server 2008 R2 Install with IIS Role. Installed Framework 3.5 (Server Features) Installed Framework 4.5 RC (MS Download) executed C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319>aspnet_regiis.exe -i (I'd use -iru on existing servers but this is a clean build). Published via File System (SMB share) Converted the folder into an application using the .Net 4.0 Integrated App Pool Stopped/restarted everything. Browsing to localhost/TestApp results in a 403.14 (Directory browsing forbidden) What step have I missed out? The site in question is MVC4 and targets the 4.5 RC framework

• What is the best error monitoring tool for Ruby on Rails applications?

• SQL Server High Availability - Mirroring with MSCS?

  I'm looking at options for high-availability for my SQL Server-powered application. The requirements are: HA protection from storage failure. Data accessibility when one of the DB servers is undergoing software updates (e.g. planned outage for Windows Update / SQL Server service-packs). Must not involve much in the way of hardware procurement. The application is an ASP.NET web application. The web application's users have their own database instances. I've seen two main options: SQL Server failover clustering, and SQL Server mirroring. I understand that SQL Server Failover Clustering requires the purchasing of a shared disk array and doesn't offer any protection if the shared storage goes down (so the documentation recommends to set up a Mirroring between two clusters). Database Mirroring seems the cheaper option (as it only requires two database servers and a simple witness box) - but I've heard it doesn't work well when you have a large number of databases. The application I'm developing involves giving each client their own database for their application - there could be hundreds of databases. Setting up the mirroring is no problem thanks to the automation systems we have in place. My final point concerns how failover works with respect to client connections - SQL Server Failover Clustering uses MSCS which means that the cluster is invisible to clients - a connection attempt might fail during the failover, but a simple reconnect will have it working again. However mirroring, as far as I know, requires that the client be aware of the mirrored partners: if the client cannot connect to the primary server then it tries the secondary server. I'm wondering how this work with respect to Connection Pooling in ASP.NET applications - does the client connection failovering mean that there's a potential 2-second (assuming 2000ms TCP timeout policy) pause when the connection pool tries the primary server on every connection attempt? I read somewhere that Mirroring can be used on top of MSCS which means that the client does not need to be aware of mirroring (so there wouldn't be any potential delays during connection, and also that no changes would need to be made to the client, not even the connection string) - however I'm finding it hard to get documentation or white papers on this approach. But if true, then it means the best method is then Mirroring (for HA) with MSCS (for client ignorance and connection performance). ...but how does this scale to a server instance that might contain hundreds of mirrored databases?

• Sun Tool-less Slide Rails Removal for X4150

  I have some tool-less slide rails for some 1ru x4150 sun servers. I can't seem to see how to remove them. Sun in their wisdom did not include this seemingly important information in their documentation; they simply (possibly with a cheeky smile) say to... "Refer to the (long since lost) installation card included with the rackmount kit for instructions on attaching tool-less slide-rail assemblies to the rack." So if anyone knows please let me know.

• Remote Desktop to Virtual Machine

  Hello: I recently reformatted one of my servers with Windows Server 2008 x64 and with that, installed the latest version of VMWare server on it. Within that, I created a new Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 virtual machine for the purposes of being a backup domain controller. I was able to successfully configure it as a domain controller and have it provide DNS service to my domain. I've been using the VMWare remote console to set this up and figured it was time to get remote desktop working. I set it up as I have with many other computers on my network (hitting the checkbox, making the firewall isn't blocking it) and I cannot get remote desktop to connect to it. I've tried using the computer name and its IP address neither work. I can ping the computer from the outside but the Virtual machine cannot ping anything from inside it. All machines are on the same subnet. I can't seem to figure this out.

  Hi, We are moving to the dataceneter and planning to have tiered storage on EVA4400 - FC RAID 10 for SQL databases and RAID5 across 24 FATA 1TB disks form VMware ESX guests.HP is describing FATA disks as suitable for near online storage, however I am not convinced that 24 spindles will not be enough for running VMWare for 3 ESX servers. Does anyone has opinion on why this could be a such a bad idea?

• How is incoming SMTP mail being delivered despite blocked port

  I setup a MX mail server, everything works despite port 25 being blocked, I'm stumped as to why I am able to receive email with this setup, and what the consequences might be if I leave it this way. Here are the details: Connections to SMTP over port 25 and 587 both reliably connect over my local network. Connections to SMTP over port 25 are blocked from external IPs (the ISP is blocking the port). Connections to Submission SMTP over port 587 from external IPs are reliable. Emails sent from gmail, yahoo, and a few other addresses all are being delivered. I haven't found an email provider that fails to deliver mail to my MX. So, with port 25 blocked, I am assuming other MTA servers fallback to port 587, otherwise I can't imagine how the mail is received. I know port 25 shouldn't be blocked, but so far it works. Are there mail servers that this will not work with? Where can I find more about how this is working? -- edit More technical detail, to validate that I'm not missing something silly. But the group policy doesn't seem to work as user profile size keeps on increasing and the major space is occupied by temporary internet files therefore increasing the disk usage. • APC switched rack PDU: Startup outlet state

  I have an APC Switched Rack PDU powering a number of servers in a remote datacentre. After a recent power outage, I noticed that the outlets did not automatically default to the On status once power was restored. Having reviewed the Web UI, I cannot find this option. I'm not certain of the model number (it doesn't appear to be visible in the Web UI), but I think it's this one. Is it possible to configure these PDU units to automatically power outlets after a cold start?

  Hello everyone, I am using Virtual PC 2007 on Windows Vista Enterprise x86. My confusion is about the network setting for guest OS. In the network setting, I can set the network adaptor of guest OS to one of my physical network adaptors of my host OS (I have tested that it works for guest OS to use the physical network adaptor of host OS to access external network). But in this way, 1. since both host OS and guest OS will use the same physical network adaptor, will there be any conflicts (e.g. same H/W serves two OS)? 2. will guest OS share a part of network bandwidth of the host OS of the physical network adaptor? 3. • nginx - Redirect specific page paths to https while keeping everything else on http (in a single server call)?

  From what I've gathered so far it's clear that running if statements in nginx should be avoided at all costs. Most of the examples I've found so far regarding specific page redirects involve multiple servers being used. But, isn't that a bit wasteful? I'm not sure, but I would think multiple servers to accomplish this would be somewhat slower then a single server when under heavy load. My current server call is this: server { listen 10.0.0.60:80; listen 10.0.0.60:443 default ssl; #other code } What I want to do is redirect certain http requests to https requests. For example, I want /login/ and /my-account/ to always be forced to use SSL. If you're on /help/ though, I want that served over the default http. Is there a way to accomplish this within a single server call? Or is there no downside to using 2 server calls to get this working? nginx seems to be under pretty active development and a lot of the older guides I've followed were from times when you couldn't listen to requests for port 80 and 443 within the same server call. But now that nginx has been updated to support that (I'm running 1.2.4), I'm wondering if there's a "best practice" way of handling this today. Any help would be greatly appreciated.   I've installed ruby and xampp server. now i am trying to use xampp mysql for ruby application. i copied xampp mysql lib (libmysql) from C:\xampp\mysql\lib to C:\Ruby192\bin (as told on some post on this forum). now after that when i try to create a resource using following command, i get an error. command: rails generate scaffold ShortUrl url:string error: C:/Ruby192/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/mysql2-0.3.11-x86-mingw32/lib/mysql2/mysql2.rb:2:in `require': Incorrect MySQL client library version! This gem was compiled for 6.0.0 but the client library is 5.5.16. (RuntimeError) i know that there is version issue b/w ruby mysql client and xampp mysal. now i need advice that what is better solution? upgraded xampp mysql or downgrade ruby mysql version. Personally i want to upgrade xampp mysql but i read on some post that xampp mysql can't be upgraded. please advise.

• Dropbox won't connect on Ubuntu 10.10 (Waiting For Connection)

  I run Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-25) on an x86 machine and try to install Dropbox by downloading the latest .deb file from the website. Now, first it will install dropbox-nautilus (requiring me to restart Nautilus before that) and then ask me to start Dropbox itself. The Dropbox client opens and indefinitely waits for a connection as there is a connection error. Of course, I don't use a proxy server and I'm writing this post from this very machine, so there's no problem with the internet connection. I'm not using a firewall (at least not that I know of, the Ubuntu installation is relatively untouched so far). Does anybody have some pointers?

• Solaris Administration Web GUI?

  I recently installed Solaris 11 x86 text install (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/downloads/index.html?ssSourceSiteId=ocomen) to be used as a file server running ZFS. I noticed that I'm given the bare minimum in terms of packages. Is there an official oracle web GUI for managing ZFS? I ran a netstat and it doesn't appear to have installed any webserver thats listening. I saw something from a couple years ago, but apparently it's not packaged or maintained anymore (https://blogs.oracle.com/talley/entry/manage_zfs_from_your_browser). I tried pkg install network-console, but it says that the package isn't available for my platform. Any ideas? I'd like to stick with Oracle Solaris instead of the open source alternatives, if possible.

• getting Internet connection sharing working in a slightly more complicated configuration

  I have the following configuration: Computer A - Mac OSX 10.8.4, wireless & wired adapters Computer B - Windows 7 (64 bit), wireless & wired adapters, has internet connection via the wired adapter (ethernet) d-link wired/wireless router. Problem to solve: Connect from computer A to the internet through the wired connection of computer B. I tried the following: I set up a local network between A and B using the d-link router. The configuration is this: D-link router - 192.168.0.1 A - wired connection to the d-link router, static 192.168.0.101 (I could have used the wireless but I preferred the wired connection) B - wireless connection to the d-link router DHCP 192.168.0.102 (but I made sure it always gets the same address) B - wired connection to the internet using some address that begins with 10.x.y.z. In this configuration A can see B. I enabled ICS on the wired adapter of B. I set up the Gateway of A to point to B and DNS servers to point to the DNS servers specified for the 10.x.y.z address. It doesn't work, A goes only as far as B. It can ping the 10.x.y.z address of B though. I then found this article: http://terrybritton.com/windows-internet-connection-sharing-ics-not-working-with-linux-bridging-is-the-solution-916/. Terry is suggesting that a bridge should be defined on B between the two connections. I tried that but basically computer B is screwed as soon as I create the bridge. It can't connect to the internet anymore. It is as if the network bridge seems to think the traffic to the internet should go from the wired connection to the wireless and not the other way around. The other thing that puzzles me is the router itself. In general the router needs an internet address. In a normal configuration it is the router that gets the ip address and the internet traffic goes through the router. In my case I am not interested in that. So, any suggestions to get this working? I wouldn't shy away from using a commercial software but I would think windows 7 should allow me to do it. Thanks

• SLES AutoYaST Script Validity Verification

  Does anyone here write their own customized AutoYaST scripts for building SLES servers? I'm not talking about generating them with yast2 autoyast. If so, have you found a way to verify the syntax? xmllint is good as far as telling you that the XML syntax is valid, but with an upto date DTD, it can't tell you anything more, and the shipped DTDs are out-of-date. I've opened a ticket with Novell on this, but who knows when and what I'll hear back.
