• Recommended Configuration to setup Tomcat 7 on windows OS

  I have created a small web application using java/jee which will be deployed in LAN environment. I want to know the recommended hardware configuration. Details are as follows 1) Expected number of hits: 20 hits / hour 2) Number of clients 5-7 3) Application Server : Tomcat 7 4) Database server : MySql App and DB shall be deployed on same machine 5) OS Configuration : Windows XP or any unix flavour ? Can a simple p4/celeron machine with 1 gb ram 8-10 GB hard disk will be sufficient to cater client requests? Server will not be storing too many files/images/videos Client does not want to spend too much on infrastructure.

• Strange email coming from/to my computer

  I'm running smtp4dev on my machine to trap anything going in/out of my computer on port 25 for testing purposes. Every so often this email gets trapped and I have no idea what it's from. I have Microsoft Security Essentials running on my machine and it hasn't identified and viruses or anything so I'm not sure what's going on. • USB driver problems (Windows 8.1)

  Every time I turn on my laptop the USB ports don't work and the drivers have an error. In order to fix this I'm forced to start the Device Manager, uninstall all the USB drivers, open the Control Panel, click Find and fix problems (under System and Security), click Configure a device (under Hardware and Sound) and then when that window pops up just hit Next until I can see my USB drivers reinstalled and working in the Device Manager window under Universal Serial Bus controllers. I found this way to fix it but I would like a permanent solution so that I don't have to do this every time I turn on the machine. Any ideas? When I bought the machine it had Window 7 installed but I later upgraded it to Windows 8.0 and then 8.1 after that.

• Bridging VirtualBox over OpenVPN TAP adapter on Windows

  I'm trying to configure a virtual machine (VirtualBox guest running Backtrack 4) with a bridged adapter over a VPN connection. The VPN is is hosted by the cybersecurity club at my university, and connects to a sandboxed LAN designed for penetration testing against various servers that the club has built. My host (Windows 7 Ultimate) connects to the VPN fine and is assigned an IP through DHCP, but for some reason the VM can't do the same thing, and I'm not sure why. It's like OpenVPN is filtering out packets from the MAC address it doesn't recognize. I want the virtual machine to bridge over the VPN connection, because our IT office has very strict policies about what you can and can't do on the network. I want to be able to run active attacks (ARP spoofing, nmap, Nessus scans) in the sandbox environment without risking the traffic accidentally going over the university network and getting my internet access revoked. Bridging over the VPN connection and running all attacks from inside the VM would solve that problem. Any idea why the host can use this interface, but the VM can't?

• Keyboard mapping issue in Virtualbox on Mac OS

  I run Windows 7 as a VM in VirtualBox on my MacBook Air (using OS X 10.7). If I do not shutdown the VM but save its machine state. The keyboard will behave strangely after resuming. It seems the Windows Logo key is always hold. When I type the key 'u', the Control Panel will be shown. I tested on a real Windows 7, the same dialog will be shown when I press Win-key and 'u'. When I type the key 'e', the Explorer will show up, some as press Win-key and 'e' on a real Windows 7. If I click 'Restart' from the Start menu of Windows 7, after restarting the VM, the keyboard works again. I think there are some conflicts with keyboard driver in VM. It is quite annoying, usually I usually close a VM by saving its machine state, not shut the OS down. Is there any way to solve this problem?

• MacBook Pro - 72k vs 54k rpm drives - Heat and Noise

  I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 54000 rpm drive to a 72000 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 72000 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 54000 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think? • Teamviewer and Virtualbox issue: some keys don't work

  I use Teamviewer on a laptop to connect to a desktop computer running Debian Linux. On this desktop computer I run Windows inside a VirtualBox VM. I have no problems interacting directly with Linux, but when I try to interact with Windows inside Virtualbox, some keys simply don't work! (e.g. period, "@", quotes). Is there something I can do to make the full keyboard of my laptop work correctly with the Virtualbox VM inside the remote host? • Direct DB to Web Server connection

  I have a database server sitting right underneath a virtual machine host server in the rack, and this vm host is primarily responsible for servers hosting a couple different web sites and app servers that all talk to databases on the other server. Right now both servers are connected to the same switch, and I'm pretty happy with the pathing. However, both servers also have an unused network port. I wondering about the potential benefits of using a short crossover or normal+auto mdix network cable to connect these two servers together directly. Is this a good idea, or would I be doing something that won't show much benefit and is just likely to trip up a future admin who's not looking for this? The biggest weakness I can see right now is that this would likely require a code change for each vm app to point to the new IP of the database server on this private little network, and if I have a problem with the virtual machine host and have to spin up it's guests elsewhere while I fix it I'll have to change this back before things will work.

• Upgrade from 11.04 to 12.04 failed - unable to login

  Yesterday i updgraded from 10.04 to 12.04 via the update-manager. At the end it said "Failed to upgrade due to too many errors". Before that i got a lot of error messages that said packages could ne configured - they were all related to mono. Then it force me to restart. When booting now, I see the pink screen (without logo). After that it turns black and the cursor appears. Then its falshing around between beeing bright and dark and showing the cursor and not showing it. But no way i see the login-screen. At the moment i am not able to boot frm usb since my usb device is too large to be formated to FAT-32 (8GB). This all is happening on this machine: AMD E-350 Processor (2x1,65Ghz) 4GB DDR3 RAM 320GB SATA II Hard drive AMD® Radeon™ HD 6320 Thanks in advance to everyone who trys helping me ;) I have to continue working with data from this machine so i´d be pleased to get my data accessible. • What kinds of demos are good to make for a software engineer job

  I have created my cv site and sent out my demos for a while now, but most of my demos are either from my course or games related since my course was a games programming course, I was wondering what kind of demos are good to show off my skills in programming in general. These are what i already have Pennies:just a simple game first coursework i did. What I am asking here is what kind of demos are good to add or have, i have been looking and have hit a tough spot I cant think of anything to make more than games. so for a general graduate software engineer what types would be good examples? EDIT: since responding to the comments bellow well for what languages well my main one would be C++, followed by Java, Erlang and abit of Haskell

• Bitlocker and SQL Server (2012)

  I just turned on Bitlocker on my development laptop for the first time (Windows 8.1) and encrypted both SSDs. When I started SQL Server Enterprise Manager, it could not connect to the default instance on the local machine. Does this not work? I have been googling for an hour and only found anecdotal evidence, but no solid information. Just to clarify - I am not interested in encrypting a database. I want to run SQL Server on a machine with an encrypted drive.

• Standards for how developers work on their own workstations

  We've just come across one of those situations which occasionally comes up when a developer goes off sick for a few days mid-project. There were a few questions about whether he'd committed the latest version of his code or whether there was something more recent on his local machine we should be looking at, and we had a delivery to a customer pending so we couldn't wait for him to return. One of the other developers logged on as him to see and found a mess of workspaces, many seemingly of the same projects, with timestamps that made it unclear which one was "current" (he was prototyping some bits on versions of the project other than his "core" one). Obviously this is a pain in the neck, however the alternative (which would seem to be strict standards for how each developer works on their own machine to ensure that any other developer can pick things up with a minimum of effort) is likely to break many developers personal work flows and lead to inefficiency on an individual level. I'm not talking about standards for checked-in code, or even general development standards, I'm talking about how a developer works locally, a domain generally considered (in my experience) to be almost entirely under the developers own control. So how do you handle situations like this? Are the one of those things that just happens and you have to deal with, the price you pay for developers being allowed to work in the way that best suits them? Or do you ask developers to adhere to standards in this area - use of specific directories, naming standards, notes on a wiki or whatever? And if so what do your standards cover, how strict are they, how do you police them and so on? Or is there another solution I'm missing? [Assume for the sake of argument that the developer can not be contacted to talk through what he was doing here - even if he could knowing and describing which workspace is which from memory isn't going to be simple and flawless and sometimes people genuinely can't be contacted and I'd like a solution which covers all eventualities.]

  I'm trying to start a VM on a new Hyper-V installation and I'm receiving the following error: The virtual machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running. The following actions may help you resolve the problem: 1) Verify that the processor of the physical computer has a supported version of hardware-assisted virtualization. 2) Verify that hardware-assisted virtualization and hardware-assisted data execution protection are enabled in the BIOS of the physical computer. (If you edit the BIOS to enable either setting, you must turn off the power to the physical computer and then turn it back on. Resetting the physical computer is not sufficient.) 3) If you have made changes to the Boot Configuration Data store, review these changes to ensure that the hypervisor is configured to launch automatically. My machine supports virtualization at the hardware level and it is enabled in BIOS. Why am I receiving this error?

  I am trying to install Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine, but installation fails. I tried to install all version (premium, ultimate etc..) but getting below error. Machine is not domain joined and logged in as administrative user. I was using Security Essentials but turn it off before the installation. Installation source is from MSDN. Do I need to connect through an SMTP server? Can I do that with sendmail? If I use sendmail's -f option and put my gmail account there it will work. Can (or should I) I use my IP address? echo -e "Subject: Foo\n\nBar\n" | sendmail -v -f [email protected] [email protected] I'm a bit lost on how all this comes together in sending mail from the command line.

• Recommended RAM and disc space for Oracle 11g on Windows

  I need to provide the recommended amount of RAM and disc space (divided in two partitions) so the customer can create an appropriate virtual machine to run Oracle. All I could find in the documentation was a brief listing with minimum RAM and typical/advanced install types. The virtual machine will run latest Oracle Standard Edition One (11g release 2 so far) under Windows Server 2008 x64 and will host a reasonably low traffic web application. How much RAM and disc must I ask for in order to be safe? (Feel free to ask for further details if I've omitted something relevant.) Update: Rough estimations: Database size: 10 MB after installation Growth rate: +3MB per day on average Size of database 'active' data: (not sure of what this means, there's not actual archive so I guess all data is current) Amount of data written per second in peak hours: a few KB Number of client sessions: 3 or 4 at most Frequency and response size of most heavy requests: some reports make heavy table JOINS that need up to 20 seconds to complete but they won't return more than a few thousand rows with plain text. The app also handles BLOBs (typical size from 50KB to 200KB)

• how to disable isight auto adjustments ?

  The built-in isight cam on my macbook machine keeps re-adjusting the lighting (and focus I think). I need to manually set those, but I found nothing of any use in System Preferences or System Profiler. Any way to access the settings ? Any magic terminal commands that allows access to the camera ? Anyone has a driver that allows for any camera access ? 'mac - it just works'...sure, if you want to use it like a kid. the second you actually want to do something with you mac other than the basic things, you can do on ANY regular machine anyway, your 'rights' are done with, as apple seems to only encourage dumb clients. I'm not saying saying this applies to all mac users, but the 'typical/average' one in my view is only going to use it for media(music,video) and web(facebook,blogging, all that) and maybe podcasting,webcasting,etc....ok this is turning into a rant, so I will finish here.

• RAM caching causes severe performance drops

  I have read plenty of threads on memory caching and the standard response of "large cache is good, it shouldn't effect performance", "the kernel knows best". I have recently upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 and changed from VirtualBox to VMware Workstation and the performance differences are severe (I suspect it is because of the latter). When I am running my virtual machine the system load monitor graph shows less than 50% memory usage generally. System load indicator is showing me that the rest of my RAM is used in the cache all the time. Plain and simple this is the comparison: BEFORE Cache was very sparingly used, pretty much none of my memory usage was the cache Swappiness was 0 (caused my memory to be used first, then swap only if needed) Performance was quite good and logical RAM was used fully first, caching was minimal. I could run enough software to utilize my full 4GB of RAM without any performance degradation whatsoever Swap space was then used as needed which was obviously slower (I am on a HDD) but was still usable when the current program was loaded into memory AFTER Cache is used to fill the full 4GB as soon as my virtual machine is run Swappiness is 0 (same behaviour as before but cache uses full memory straight away) Performance is terrible and unusable while running Ubuntu software Basic things like changing windows takes 2 minutes + Changing screens happens frame by frame over sometimes up to 5 minutes Cannot run an IDE and VM like I could with ease before So basically, any suggestions on how to take my performance back to how it was before while keeping my current setup? My suspicion is VMWare is the problem, but how do I see what is tied to the use of the cache? Surely there is a way to control this behaviour in software as polished as VMware? Thanks EDIT: Could also be important to note that the behaviour differs depending on whether VMware is open or closed. If VMware is open, then the ram will lock at like 50% and 50% cache and go into the complete lock up mentioned above. Contrastingly, if VMware is closed (after being open), then the RAM will continue to rise as it needs / cache will stay as the complete remaining memory and there is no noticeable performance degradation.

• KVM switching on the cheap

  I have a machine at home for my personal use. I also have a machine for work. I have a pair of DVI monitors. An ideal set up for a KVM switch. Sadly the cheapest switch I can find that will switch 2 DVI monitors is nearly £300. However, I can get, for just £40, a switch for a single monitor. Is there any reason why I couldn't employ 2 of these much cheaper switches? My thought was to have the keyboard, mouse and one of the monitors in one switch and just the 2nd monitor in the 2nd switch. Logically, I can't think of a reason why this wouldn't work, but I have no real background to be able to say, definatively, whether or not it would. It it makes any difference, both machines are running Win7. Appreciate any thoughts. -- Stuart

• samba shares dissapear everynight

  I have ubuntu 8.04lts and recently a weird problem has been cropping up. every night something happens and in the morning my coworkers cant see the shares. If i try to remote into the machine via ssh i don't get a prompt . when i rebooted the machine i would get a "video cannot be displayed in this mode" screen and no other activity on the box. I booted from grub into recovery and tried doing a package repair (keeping my smb.conf) and that didn't seem to do anything after a few other reboots I was able to get it to come up (im not sure what i did) yesterday it did teh same thing i booted to recovery then did a repair xserver and it came right up so i thought that resovled the issue but then today same thing anyone have any idea on what i can look for (im very new to linux in general) worst case sennerio can i just reinstall ubuntu over again with out blowing out the data?

• unable to access shared drives n win7

  OK, this is doing my head in. Not your usual Win7 sharing problem. Just built a win 7 comp to go onto my home lan and be accessed by all on the network, mostly running XP SP3. Installed it as a single HD+DVD system, got it happy, then added my storage drives, set them up in the right order and letters, rebooted, and shared them. Couldn't access the computer at all from any XP machine. Set the pasword thingy in win7 to NO, and now I can "see" all four shared drives from any machine, but can access only two of them. Please tell me whats going on as I've done nothing different from one drive to the other, just installed and set up drive letters as normal, then shared the damn things. The odd thing about it? the two 1.5T drives that have a lot of data on board are accessable, the two nearly empty 500G ones are not. ANY ideas? Cheers, Colin

• Why doesn't lsof show localhost TCP connections in 14.04?

  I have two servers running 12.04.4 and 14.04.1 respectively. Both have nginx (port 80) and a Java process (port 8080). As expected, the lsof output for the Java process on the 12.04 machine shows a couple of established connections for port 8080 (e.g. TCP 127.0.0.1:8080->127.0.0.1:58067 (ESTABLISHED)) The 14.04 machine however does not. It only shows the listening port (TCP *:8080 (LISTEN)). I'm sure there are active connections though (confirmed by access logs, Java process status output, etc). What has changed from 12.04 to result in this behavior? • Changing linksys router configuration from command-line

  I am constantly logged into (ssh'd) my home machine (ubuntu) from various remote locations. Sometimes I would like to change my home linksys router settings (change the port forwarding settings or disable/enable wireless, things like that). When I try and use the links2 text browser, there isn't much I can do because the tab titles don't show up (presumably because they are pictures?). Is there another way of configuring a linksys router from a command line? I guess my only other option is to set up a proxy on my home machine and use a browser connected to that proxy to configure it, but I would think there might be a non-browser way of doing it. Thanks
