• Sort Java List/Map by order in which items are in an XML File

  Hello everyone, What I'm looking to do is to sorta a Java List or Map in the order the items are in a XML File. For Example I have a list of function names as so: functionOne functionThree functionTwo The XML File looks like this: <xml> <function>functionOne</function> <function>functionTwo</function> <function>functionThree</function> </xml> So I would like to sort the list so the function names are as so: functionOne functionTwo functionThree Now Im trying to do this for Variables as well, so there are around 500+ unique 'items'. Does anyone have any idea how I can go about doing this? Now for the file that determines that sort order doesn't have to be XML it just what I use the most, it can be anything that can get the job done. Thanks in advance for your time.

  Having worked in software development for 12 years, I've recently started to worry about ageism in the industry. Seeing I'm not too bad at what I do I've never really worried about where my next job's going to come from, but the more I look around me the younger software developers seem to get. Although I feel I'm now at the top of my programming game, I have some management experience and I'm now wondering if I should make a fully-fledged leap from development to ensure future career security. I know ageism has traditionally be linked with the IT industry, but given modern employment law makes discrimination illegal, is ageism still a real problem for software developers? Or are my aging neurons deluding me?

  Hi! I'm trying to join some tables together in MySQL, but I seem to get an error saying: #1066 - Not unique table/alias: 'calendar_jobs' I really want it to select everything from the cal_events, the 2 user bits and just the destination col from the jobs table, but become "null" if there arn't any job. A right join seemed to fit the bill but doesn't work! Can anyone help!? UPDATE: Thanks for the help on the previous query, I'm now up to this: SELECT calendar_events.* , calendar_users.doctorOrNurse, calendar_users.passportName, calendar_jobs.destination FROM `calendar_events` , `calendar_users` RIGHT JOIN calendar_jobs ON calendar_events.jobID = calendar_jobs.jobID WHERE `start` >= 0 AND calendar_users.userID = calendar_events.userID; But am now getting an error saying: #1054 - Unknown column 'calendar_events.jobID' in 'on clause' What is it this time!? • Clojure for a lisp illiterate

  I am a lifelong object-oriented programmer. My job is primarily java development, but I have experience in a number of languages. Ruby gave me my first real taste of functional programming. I loved the features Ruby borrowed from the functional paradigm such as closures and continuations. Eventually, I graduated to Scala. This has been a great way to gradually learn to approach non-trivial problems in a functional manner. Now I am interested in Clojure. I know all the sexy features that make it enticing (software transactional memory, macros, etc.), but I just can't get used to "thinking in lisp". I've seen Rich Hickey's screencasts aimed at java programmers, but they are geared towards explaining language features and not approaching real world problems. I am looking for any advice or resources which have made this transition easier for others.

• Form with target="_blank" will produce empty POST data in IE6

  I have an iframe containing a form. I want the form to point to a new window when the user submits it. Basically, the following code should do the trick: <?php var_dump($_POST); ?> <form method="post" action="test_post_to_blank.php" target="_blank"> <input type="text" name="test" value="test" /> <input type="submit" /> </form> The problem is that in IE6 a new window is opened with empty POST data. • Web app implementation question.

  I would like to create a web app similar to Stack Overflow in that the users will have different "point" levels and that their capabilities within the web app will be different based upon their point level. Question: How can this best be implemented? How can it be implemented in a way that is un-hackable (i.e. accessing capabilities that should not be available)? I figure there are two ways to do this: server-side and client-side. For the server-side solution, for each page request you check who the user is and have the CGI rewrite the page so that the client only gets a web page with the intended capabilities. For the client-side solution, the server gives the client the fully capable app and it is the client's job to check the point level and to handicap the app appropriately. It seems like the client-side solution would be easier on the server, (which is really important for my app), but more susceptible to someone hacking and using capabilities unwarranted by their point level.

• What scripting language would you use to put text over a generated image ?

  I got this question from my cousin: "What will be the best way to create a similar working website just like: http://www.plakletters.nl". I have looked into the website and think that to start of with i'm gonna help my cousin write a script that loads all fonts installed on the system into a dropdownlist. This dropdownlist will post a font value back to the page and will create images with the input of a user that comes from a textbox. This images will have to be created server side, and I also want to give the users the ability (in the future) to lay their own text over an uploaded image, to see what the result will look like on their own image. I found some information about how to create images using php, I don't know if php can output a list of installed fonts from the system it's running on. What scripting language would you use to get this job done? Keep in mind i would just like to start with outputting some images based on user input using a scripting language.

• Filter a List via Another

  I have a requirement to filter a list of Clients based on if they haven't had any jobs booked in the last x months. In my code I have two lists, one is my Clients and the other is a filtered List of Jobs between today and x months ago and the idea is to filter Clients based on their id not appearing in the jobs list. I tried the following: filteredClients.Where(n => jobsToSearch.Count(j => j.Client == n.ClientID) == 0).ToList(); But I seem to get ALL clients regardless. I can easily do a foreach but this severly slows down the process. How can I filter the client list based on the job list effectively?

Right now I create a mysql connection at the beginning and use the same connection through out the code. Most of the time is spent making the API calls. Will it be more efficient to create a new database connection only when it's time to store the data (below)? • How can i initialize an array without knowing it size?

  I have a situation where i have to apply a criteria on an input array and reuturn another array as output which will have smaller size based upon the filtering criteria. Now problem is i do not know the size of filtered results, so i can not initialize the array with specific value. And i do not want it to be large size will null values because i am using array.length; later on. One way is to first loop the original input array and set a counter, and then make another loop with that counter length and initialize and fill this array[]. But is there anyway to do the job in just one loop?

  I've been reading up on message queueing lately, and I'd like to implement a simple, extendable, system for my app. While there's a lot of good information on the subject of setting up a MQ system out there, I can't find a lot about the actual implementation. I'm looking for patterns and best practices on how to properly format messages for a queue, and ways to execute the jobs in PHP. Should I use JSON, serialized objects, text, URLs or XML? What information should I send? Is a worker with a switch($job['command']) {} (or something like that) the way to go, or are there any established patterns out there to implement a worker? So I'm definately going to brush up on that. I remember for a previous job interview, I was asked Java questions, like not super intricate, but detailed stuff. Now I'm looking for a book maybe that I can read through in a day (or two) and known all the crannies of C#, ASP.NET and JavaScript.   I have 3 tables: Foos, Bars and FooBarConfirmations I want to have a in-memory list of FooBarConfirmations by their hash: FooID BarID Hash 1 1 1_1 2 1 2_1 1 2 1_2 2 2 2_2 What would be the best Class to use to store this type of structure in-memory, so that I can quickly check to see if a combination exists like so: list.Contains("1_2"); I can do this with Dictionary<string,anything>, but it "feels" wrong. HashSet looks like the right tool for the job, but does it use some form of hashing algorithm in the background to do the lookups efficiently?

• rake tast can't access rails.cache

  Hi I want to call a rake task from a cron job that stores remote weather data in the rails cache. However, I must be doing something pretty wrong here because I cannot find any solution through countless fruitless searches. Say I define and call this task namespace :weather do desc "Store weather from remote source to cache" task :cache do Rails.cache.write('weather_data', Date.today) end end I get the error Anonymous modules have no name to be referenced by Which leads me to believe the rails cache isn't available. Outputting Rails.class from the rake file gives me Module but Rails.cache.class again returns the above error. Do I need to include something here? • Cluster of computers for rent?

  I am doing a project in the university which requires running of multiple instances (1000s) of a program I've written (in C++), which runs for quite a while (say 2 hours). The program is very self contained - it does not require input files, and the only dependency I think is boost. I'm currently using the university-owned cluster of computer. However, it's quite old and the jobs dispatching and monitors services are pretty bad. So I was wondering whether I can run my jobs elsewhere, for some money. For example, I looked a bit into Google App Engine, but as it seems every job must end after 30 seconds it is not suitable for me. Maybe Amazon EC2? Do you know of such options?

  I've installed a vb.net windows service on a Windows 2008 machine, that is attempting to connect to SQL 2005. The service starts succesfully, but can't see the database. The event log has the following entry. The description for Event ID 0 from source SU4.ESMR.DAL.Job.FillPriorityJobByType(oJobDS, TypeID: 3 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. This was tested locally on both XP and 2008. All environments are 32 bit.

• What motivates people to learn a new programming language?

  There are plenty of question asking Which Programming Language Should I Learn? but I have not found an answer yet to the question what really motivates people to learn a specific new language?. There are the people who think they should learn a new language every year for educational purpose. How do they decide on the languages to be learned? Then I guess there are people who learn a new language because people around them told it is a fun language and they can build nice things with it. Of course if the current job requires it people would learn a new language but I think if the language seems to have a potential to earn money (e.g. There are plenty of jobs in Java or ObjectiveC can be used to write apps for the iPhone and make money). So why are you learning a new language or why have you learned the languages you know?
