• Event ID 17890 (A significant part... paged out.) with SQL Server 2008

  I have a machine that has SQL Server 2008 Standard installed. Periodically (about once an hour) I am getting Event ID 17890 several times in a row. An example: 6:28:54 "A significant part of sql server process memory has been paged out. This may result in a performance degradation. Duration: 0 seconds. Working set (KB): 10652, committed (KB): 628428, memory utilization: 1%%. 6:34:27 "A significant part of sql server process memory has been paged out. This may result in a performance degradation. Duration: 332 seconds. Working set (KB): 169780, committed (KB): 546124, memory utilization: 31%%." 6:38:55 "A significant part of sql server process memory has been paged out. This may result in a performance degradation. Duration: 600 seconds. Working set (KB): 245068, committed (KB): 546124, memory utilization: 44%%." This pattern repeated at 7:26 - 7:37, 8:26 - 8:36, 9:24 - 9:35 and so with the same increasing working set and memory utilization pattern. I don't have any (known) background tasks running at this time. Backups run at 2:00 This subsided from 11:00 at night until it resumed at 4:00 in the morning and has been continuing the intermittent 10 minute glitch periods. As this server has plenty of RAM (the commit charge has peaked at 2,871,564 of 4,194,012 physical) I disabled the paging files after reading several items I dug up searching Google and not finding any of them changing the situation. This pattern I am documented is after removing the paging files, so I'm not even sure where we are paging the SQL process could be going. I also changed the SQL process memory to have a minimum of 500MB and a maximum of 2GB of RAM (as this is a light duty database server serving only a small workgroup). Has anyone encountered this? Prior to disabling the page files this error would cause 5 minutes of disk thrashing that disabled access to the databases, files, IIS webs and so on. Since disabling the page files it just logs strange things, but I'm not seeing a performance drop at least. Any suggestions would be welcome.

• Python virtualenv questions

  I'm using VirtualEnv on Windows XP. I'm wondering if I have my brain wrapped around it correctly. I ran virtualenv ENV and it created C:\WINDOWS\system32\ENV. I then changed my PATH variable to include C:\WINDOWS\system32\ENV\Scripts instead of C:\Python27\Scripts. Then, I checked out Django into C:\WINDOWS\system32\ENV\Lib\site-packages\django-trunk, updated my PYTHON_PATH variable to point the new Django directory, and continued to easy_install other things (which of course go into my new C:\WINDOWS\system32\ENV\Lib\site-packages directory). I understand why I should use VirtualEnv so I can run multiple versions of Django, and other libraries on the same machine, but does this mean that to switch between environments I have to basically change my PATH and PYTHON_PATH variable? So, I go from developing one Django project which uses Django 1.2 in an environment called ENV and then change my PATH and such so that I can use an environment called ENV2 which has the dev version of Django? Is that basically it, or is there some better way to automatically do all this (I could update my path in Python code, but that would require me to write machine-specific code in my application)? Also, how does this process compare to using VirtualEnv on Linux (I'm quite the beginner at Linux).

• File.Move does not inherit permissions from target directory?

  In case something goes wrong in creating a file, I've been writing to a temporary file and then moving to the destination. Something like: var destination = @"C:\foo\bar.txt"; var tempFile = Path.GetTempFileName(); using (var stream = File.OpenWrite(tempFile)) { // write to file here here } string backupFile = null; try { var dir = Path.GetDirectoryName(destination); if (!Directory.Exists(dir)) { Directory.CreateDirectory(dir); Util.SetPermissions(dir); } if (File.Exists(destination)) { backupFile = Path.Combine(Path.GetTempPath(), new Guid().ToString()); File.Move(destination, backupFile); } File.Move(tempFile, destination); if (backupFile != null) { File.Delete(backupFile); } } catch(IOException) { if(backupFile != null && !File.Exists(destination) && File.Exists(backupFile)) { File.Move(backupFile, destination); } } The problem is that the new "bar.txt" in this case does not inherit permissions from the "C:\foo" directory. Yet if I create a file via explorer/notepad etc directly in the "C:\foo" there's no issues, so I believe the permissions are correctly set on "C:\foo". Update Found Inherited permissions are not automatically updated when you move folders, maybe it applies to folders as well. Now looking for a way to force an update of file permissions. Is there a better way overall of doing this?

• Binding a Value from a View-Model to the View-Model of a child User Control in Silverlight?

  Hi there, So i have a UserControl for one of my Views and have another 'child' UserControl inside that. The outer 'parent' UserControl has a Collection on its View-Model and a Grid control on it to display a list of Items. I want to place another UserControl inside this UserControl to display a form representing the details of one Item. The outer / parent UserControl's View-Model already has a property on it to hold the currently selected Item and i would like to bind this to a DependancyProperty on the inner / child UserControl. I would then like to bind that DependancyProperty to a property on the child UserControl's View-Model. I can then set the DependancyProperty once in XAML with a binding expression and have the child UserControl do all its work in its View-Model like it should. The code i have looks like this..   I am running a Squid (3.1) cache in front of Django. The content of the site does not change very often, so Squid gives our backend much needed breathing room. Currently, this is the refresh pattern that we are using to cache the content: refresh_pattern . 60 100% 60 We basically want to cache everything for at least an hour (and only an hour) before Squid then re-validates the content. My question is on the "100%" parameter, which sets the lm-factor. I'm not sure if setting that to 100% is doing what we want it to. The assumption was that by setting it to 100%, it would ensure that objects stay in the cache for the max cache time. Is this an incorrect assumption? What are the best practices that one should follow when setting up a refresh pattern like this?

  hi I have created jar in the following folder: /usr/local/bin/niidle.jar. And my MANIFEST.MF file is as follows: Manifest-Version: 1.0 Main-Class: com.ensarm.niidle.web.scraper.NiidleScrapeManager Class-Path: hector-0.6.0-17.jar And I verified that,this 'hector-0.6.0-17.jar' file is also present in the folder: /Projects/EnwelibDatedOct13/Niidle/lib/hector-0.6.0-17.jar I don't want to give full class-path name in MANIFEST.MF file,because I have to run this jar on other's machine,so I gave only jar file name 'Class-Path=hector-0.6.0-17.jar' in MANIFEST.MF file. Inspite of mentioning the Class-Path in MANIFEST.MF file, when I run this using command: java -jar /usr/local/bin/niidle.jar arguments... • NUnit for VS has suddenly bombed.. Anyone else experience this?

  I'm getting the following set of errors in a project, that previously worked fine, from NUnit for VS when I try to run either individual or all of the tests in a given solution. Error loading C:\Path to Application\Application\Application.ApplicationTests\bin\Debug\Application.ApplicationTests.dll: The method or operation is not implemented. Error loading C:\Path to Application\Application\Application.FileDetectorTests\bin\Debug\FileDetectorTests.dll: The method or operation is not implemented. Error loading C:\Path to Application\Application\Application.PresentationTests\bin\Debug\Application.PresentationTests.dll: The method or operation is not implemented. Error loading C:\Path to Application\Application\Application.DomainTests\bin\Debug\Application.DomainTests.dll: The method or operation is not implemented. I've verified that each project is setup with the appropriate ProjectTypeGuids for a test project in the Project file. I've tried uninstalling / reinstalling NUnit for VS, but have had no luck. Does anyone have any advice as to how I might start troubleshooting this? If I open each individual test project outside of the main solution (that includes all projects, by the way,) and save it as it's own solution, they run just fine. Nothing of note has changed since this stopped working. Thanks! Ian

• How to download a file from a UNC mapped share via IIS and ASP

  I am writing an ASP application that will serve files to clients through the browser. The files are located on a file server that is available from the machine IIS is running on via a UNC path (\server\some\path). I want to use something like the code below to serve the file. Serving files that are local to the machine IIS is running on is working well with this method, my trouble is being able to serve files from the UNC mapped share: //Set the appropriate ContentType. Response.ContentType = "Application/pdf"; //Get the physical path to the file. string FilePath = MapPath("acrobat.pdf"); //Write the file directly to the HTTP content output stream. Response.WriteFile(FilePath); Response.End(); My question is how I can specify a UNC path for the file name. Also, to access the file share I need to connect with a specific username/password. I would appreciate some pointers on how I can achieve this (either using the approach above or by other means).

• How can I bind Wpf DataGridColumn to an object?

  I want to bind the columns of my WPF DataGrid to some objects in a Dictionary like this: Binding Path=Objects[i] where Objects is my Dictionary of objects, so that each cell will represent an Object element. How can I do that? I suppose that I need to create a template for my cell, which I did, but how to get the result of column binding in my template? I know that by default the content of a DataGridCell is a TextBlock and it's Text property is set through column binding result, but if that result is an object I guess that I have to create a ContentTemplate. How do I do that, as the stuff I tried is not displaying anything. • Design Philosophy Question - When to create new functions

  This is a general design question not relating to any language. I'm a bit torn between going for minimum code or optimum organization. I'll use my current project as an example. I have a bunch of tabs on a form that perform different functions. Lets say Tab 1 reads in a file with a specific layout, tab 2 exports a file to a specific location, etc. The problem I'm running into now is that I need these tabs to do something slightly different based on the contents of a variable. If it contains a 1 I may need to use Layout A and perform some extra concatenation, if it contains a 2 I may need to use Layout B and do no concatenation but add two integer fields, etc. There could be 10+ codes that I will be looking at. Is it more preferable to create an individual path for each code early on, or attempt to create a single path that branches out only when absolutely required. Creating an individual path for each code would allow my code to be extremely easy to follow at a glance, which in turn will help me out later on down the road when debugging or making changes. The downside to this is that I will increase the amount of code written by calling some of the same functions in multiple places (for example, steps 3, 5, and 9 for every single code may be exactly the same. Creating a single path that would branch out only when required will be a bit messier and more difficult to follow at a glance, but I would create less code by placing conditionals only at steps that are unique. I realize that this may be a case-by-case decision, but in general, if you were handed a previously built program to work on, which would you prefer?

• Please help to troubleshoot the issue with Inspiron 8600 laptop

  Hello! I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop which display stopped working all of the sudden. It started to show a purple fog pattern along with some color vertical lines. I talked to Dell support and they told me that is a screen gone bad and I should get a new one which I did. But surprisingly the new display won't work either! The pattern on the screen is different but still no picture. So I tried to connect the old display to another laptop (Lenovo Z61) and it turns out it works just fine with it! So please help me to identify the cause of the issue. I think it could be a video card but the external display works flawlessly. I appreciate your thoughts about it so I won't need to buy spares which I don't need. Thank you! P.S. Please do not suggest to contact Dell support again.

• Resolving a Forward Declaration Issue Involving a State Machine in C++

  I've recently returned to C++ development after a hiatus, and have a question regarding implementation of the State Design Pattern. I'm using the vanilla pattern, exactly as per the GoF book. My problem is that the state machine itself is based on some hardware used as part of an embedded system - so the design is fixed and can't be changed. This results in a circular dependency between two of the states (in particular), and I'm trying to resolve this. Because of the circular dependency, I can't invoke the constructor because it's not possible to pre-define both of the constructors of the 'problem' states. I had a look at this article, and the template method which seemed to be the ideal solution - but it doesn't compile and my knowledge of templates is a rather limited... The other idea I had is to try and introduce a Helper class to the subclassed states, via multiple inheritance, to see if it's possible to specify the base class's constructor and have a reference to the state subclasse's constructor. But I think that was rather ambitious... Finally, would a direct implmentation of the Factory Method Design Pattern be the best way to resolve the entire problem?

• file cretaed using exec could not be accessed immediately after creation?

  HI I'm using exec in php to execute a command and it will create a .png file in a temp folder.. After creating that i'm trying to open that file and read contents and process them,, but i end up file could not read error.. • UnauthorizedAccessException when running desktop application from shared folder

  I created a desktop application using VS 2008. When I run it locally, all works well. I shared my output folder (WITHOUT allowing network users to change my files) and ran my exe from another Vista computer on our intranet. When running the shared exe, I receive "System.UnauthorizedAccessException" when trying to read a file. How can I give permission to allow reading the file? Should I change the code? Should I grant permission to the application\folder on the Vista computer? how? Notes: I do not use ClickOnce. the application should be distributed using xcopy. The folder/file "cache" does not exist The client is randomly trying to access a "cache" folder everywhere on the website. It is always trying to access the folder/file "cache" following this pattern: Pattern: /level1/.../levelwhatever/filename (referer) /level1/.../levelwhatever/cache We run a LAMP (Debian stable: PHP 5.3.3-7+squeeze9.
