• It's Here! Visual Studio 2010 and ASP.NET 4.0 Ship

  Today Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010 and ASP.NET 4.0. I've been using the RC version of Visual Studio 2010 quite a bit for the past couple of months and have really grown to like it. It has a host of features and enhancements that improve developer productivity, from improved IntelliSense to better multiple monitor support. Plus there's something about the user experience that, to me, makes it feel better than Visual Studio 2008. I don't know if it's the new blue color motif or what, but the IDE seems more modern looking and more responsive to my mouse movements and other input. Anyway, if you've not yet downloaded Visual Studio 2010 and ASP.NET 4.0, why not? As with previous versions of Visual Studio there's a free Express Edition and VS2010 and ASP.NET 4.0 runs side-by-side with earlier versions of Visual Studio and ASP.NET. And with Visual Studio 2010's multi-targeting you can even use VS2010 as your development editor for ASP.NET 2.0 and ASP.NET 3.5 web applications. (Although be forewarned if you have multiple developers working on the application that the project files in VS2010 and earlier versions of Visual Studio differ.) This week's article on 4Guys explores my favorite new features of Visual Studio 2010. Here's an excerpt: The Visual Studio 2010 user experience is noticeably different than with previous versions. Some of the changes are cosmetic - gone is the decades-old red and orange color scheme, having been replaced with blues and purples - while others are more substantial.   We have a java application running on linux (ubuntu server). We have been facing high recv-q problem since quite some time. Application gets hang and does not read data from socket every few hours. In thread dump, we have found below stack trace. Recently we have been facing issues with recv-q size getting hung, were in receive buffer gets stuck at some point of time. But recvQ size is not decreasing and as a result we are losing a lot of hits from the other side, our application is not accepting any data.

• How do I evaluate my skillset against the current market to see what needs improvement and where my

  First of all, this question may be out of bounds for this site. If so, remove it. I say this because this site seems to be a place for more concrete questions that are not so relative in nature. And before I begin, for those of you whom just prefer a question and not this sort of dialog, here is my question: How can I assess my current skills as a programmer and decide where and what areas to improve upon? That said, here's what I'm asking/talking about, in essence. The market is always in constant flux. As programmers we're always having to learn new things, update our skills, push ourselves into that next project. There's not a very good litmus test that I know of for us to get an idea of where we stand as programmers. I came across this blog post by Jeff Atwood talking about why can't programmers code. Instinctively (and as the post goes on to state) I rushed through the program in about 4 minutes (most of that time was b/c I was hand writing it out. Still, this doesn't really answer the question of where do my skills need to be to succeed in today's world. I real blogs, listen to podcasts, try to keep up on the latest things coming out. It has only been in the past couple of months that I made a decision to pick a focus area for my learning as I can't learn everything and trying to do so is to spread myself too thin. I chose ASP.NET MVC & C#. I plan to stick with Microsoft technologies, not out of some sense of loyalty or stubbornness, but rather because they seem to stream together and have a unifying connection between them. With Windows Phone 7 coming out, it seems that now is the obvious time to pick up WPF and Silverlight as well. Still, if you asked me to code something apart from intellisense and the internet, I probably couldn't get the syntax right. I don't have libraries memorized or know precisely where the classes I use exist within the .Net framework, namely because I haven't had to pull that knowledge out of the air. In a way, I suppose Visual Studio has insulated me, which isn't a good thing, but, at the same time, I've still been able to be productive. I'm working on my own side project to try and help my learning. In doing so, I'm trying to make use of best practices and 3rd party frameworks where I can. I'm using automapper and EF 1.0. I know everyone in the .net community seems to cry foul at the sound of EF 1.0, but I can't say why because I've never used it. There's no lazy loading and that has proven rather annoying; however, aside from that, I haven't had that much of an issue. Granted this is probably because I'm not writing tests as I go (which I'm not doing because I don't know how to test EF in tests and don't really have a clue how to write tests for ASP.NET MVC 1.0). I'm also using a custom membership provider; granted, it's a barebone implementation, but I'm using it still. My thinking in all of this is, while I am neglecting a great many important technologies that are in the mainstream, I'll have a working project in the end. I can come back and add those things after I finish. Doing it all now and at once seems like too much. I know how I work and I don't think I'd ever get it done that way. I've elected to make this a community wiki as I think this question might fight better there. If a moderator disagrees with that choice or the decision to post this here, the just delete the question. I'm not trying to make undue work for anyone. I'm just a programmer trying to assess my where his skills are now and where I should be improving.

• Asp.Net Login Control very slow initial connection to Non-Trusted AD Domain

  ASP.NET Login control is very slow making the initial connection to AD when authenticating to a different domain than the domain the web server is a member of. Problem occurs for the IIS server and when using with the Visual Studio's built in web server. It takes about 30 seconds the first time when attempting to use the control to connect against another domain. There is no trust relationship bewteen the web server's domain and the other domains (attempted connecting to several different domains). Subsequent connections execute quickly until the connection times out. Using Systernals Process Monitor to troubleshoot, there are two OpenQuery operations right before the delay to "C:\WINDOWS\asembly\GAC_MSIL\System.DirectoryServices\2.0.0.0_b03f5f7f11d50a3a\Netapi32.dll with a result NAME NOT FOUND" and right after the 30 second delay the TCP Send and TCP Recieves indicate communication begins with the AD server. Things we have tried: Impersonating an administrator on the web server in the web.config; Granting permissions to the CryptoKeys to the NetworkService and ASPNET; Specifying by IP instead of DNS name; Multiple variations of specifying the name and ldap server with domains and OU's; Local host entries; Looked for ports being blocked (SYN_SENT) with netstat -an. Nslookup resolves all the domains and systems involved correectly. TraceRt shows the Correct routes Any Idea or hints are greately appreicated.

• Is Android AVD's firewall somehow more restricted to real Android firewall?

  I have a TCP server running in AVD and a TCP client running in AVD. AVD client dies because the connection refused so we are doubting some restricted firewall settings. I turned off the firewall in my Debian -laptop with this here but it did not fix the problem so some issue with Android -emulator, intro here. How can I make a TCP connection from one AVD to another AVD in the same laptop in Android? Then "Run as Configuration" and you should see this bug. I don't have a physical Android -phone to test the code so I cannot comment whether it works with real Androids.

• Best way for an external (remote) graphics designer to style ASP.NET MVC 4 app?

  My customer has his own graphics designer he wants to use to style his web application we're building in ASP.NET MVC 4. Our solution is in Bitbucket, but if he can't run it what choices do we have? I doubt he uses Visual Studio 2012. One idea is for us to publish to our solution to a file system, send it to him, have him create a local IIS website on his machine (assuming he isn't using a Mac). Mocking data or pointing to a test SQL in Azure isn't a problem. Then he can make changes to .css and .cshtml files. Will this even work? The point is that he needs to be able to test his changes. I know he can modify the views and just check-in. But he needs to deliver a working design. So it seems inefficient. The graphics designer will have access to our test site so he can see how it works, what data we have and fields. Another idea is for him to build a static mock site using just HTML/CSS. Later I'd integrate his styles into customer's solution, split his html into partial views which we use and add Razor syntax. Again, we'd like to leverage graphics designer for all of this. Is there a best practice documented around this subject? How do other teams deal with this situation?

• FreeBSD Listen Queue Overflows - can't increase max queue size

  I have a decently high trafficked FreeBSD Nginx server, and I'm starting to get a large number of listen queue overflows: [root@svr ~]# netstat -sp tcp | fgrep listen 80361931 listen queue overflows [root@svr ~]# netstat -Lan | grep "*.80" tcp4 192/0/128 *.80 [root@svr ~]# sysctl kern.ipc.somaxconn kern.ipc.somaxconn: 12288 [root@svr ~]# However I can't seem to increase the max listen queue length past 128. I've increased kern.ipc.somaxconn, but it's not changing the max. Am I missing something? Thanks!

• JQuery / JSON + .Net Service Layer - to WCF or Not to WCF?

  I Recently had a discussion with a colleague of mine about the pros / cons of WCF. He mentioned about how much code is generated to support WCF, and also the overhead required. It was mentioned that a simple jQuery /Ajax post to a .aspx page (or a handler for that matter) that returns JSON would work more efficiently and takes much less code to implement. I am also aware of the new WCF Web API and feel that technology may solve the "bloated"-ness required in attaining a proxy etc... by just outputting JSON. So when developing a relational DB (MSSQL) storage model, with a fairly complex Business Layer (C#) and Data Access Layer (EntityFW).. what's a good technology for creating a "service layer" which will spit out View Models represented in JSON, with a CQRS(Command Query..) approach in mind.. The app would use the service layer to support it's required UI, as well as provide an available subset of services (outputting JSON data) for service subscribers.. In other words an admin panel to support the admin UI, and service endpoints that return JSON to access the configurations made from the administration UI. What are some potential technologies to use as the transport / communication layer. I'd like to use a pure RESTful approach, but am not against doing some URL rewriting with IIS. Obviously some of the available technologies are: WCF WCF Web API (should this even be separate?) Straight request / response (query string to .aspx / handler) Would using MVC .Net solve this entire problem? maybe their single page app approach? any suggestions / feedback from developing this type of application? • NGINX load balancer DOS itself

  I have been running a load balancing machine for a number of months now which has had no problems in the past. I got woken up to some downtime and I am seeing this a lot in syslog: TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 80. Sending cookies. At which point Nginx takes up 100% of the cpu and doesn't come back down to normal for several minutes. I have it running on Ubuntu currently but I also was able to replicate on Debian 6.

• Using proxy server to redirect MySQL traffic to multiple servers using standard port?

  Is it possible to redirect MySQL (tcp) traffic to multiple servers based on domain name alone? Our DNS is setup to point several sub-domain aliases to one proxy machine. (running haproxy and iptables). • Slow Transfer Speeds from KVM host to client

  I am trying to isolate the root cause of slow transfer speeds from my host OS to a KVM client. Both are Linux. Rsync on the host 192.168.1.72 rsync -auv --progress rut3.img /tmp/ [54.09MB/s] Rsync to the client: rsync -auv --progress rut3.img 192.168.1.80:/tmp/ [25.52MB/s] I realize that there will be some TCP overhead on the transfer but over 50%? Can someone enlighten me on what could be slowing down the transfers so much?

  I have an ASP.Net 2.0 application in which the Session_Start event is not firing in my Global.asax file. Can anyone tell why this is happening and how I can get it working? The application worked fine on my Windows XP development machine, but stopped working when deployed to the server (Win Server 2003/IIS 6/ASP.Net 2.0). I'm not sure if this is relevant, but the server also hosts a SharePoint installation (WSS 3.0) which I know does change some settings at the default web site level.

• Long-running ASP.NET tasks

  I know there's a bunch of APIs out there that do this, but I also know that the hosting environment (being ASP.NET) puts restrictions on what you can reliably do in a separate thread. I could be completely wrong, so please correct me if I am, this is however what I think I know. A request typically timeouts after 120 seconds (this is configurable) but eventually the ASP.NET runtime will kill a request that's taking too long to complete. The hosting environment, typically IIS, employs process recycling and can at any point decide to recycle your app. When this happens all threads are aborted and the app restarts. I'm however not sure how aggressive it is, it would be kind of stupid to assume that it would abort a normal ongoing HTTP request but I would expect it to abort a thread because it doesn't know anything about the unit of work of a thread. If you had to create a programming model that easily and reliably and theoretically put a long running task, that would have to run for days, how would you accomplish this from within an ASP.NET application? The following are my thoughts on the issue: I've been thinking a long the line of hosting a WCF service in a win32 service. And talk to the service through WCF. This is however not very practical, because the only reason I would choose to do so, is to send tasks (units of work) from several different web apps. I'd then eventually ask the service for status updates and act accordingly. My biggest concern with this is that it would NOT be a particular great experience if I had to deploy every task to the service for it to be able to execute some instructions. There's also this issue of input, how would I feed this service with data if I had a large data set and needed to chew through it? What I typically do right now is this SELECT TOP 10 * FROM WorkItem WITH (ROWLOCK, UPDLOCK, READPAST) WHERE WorkCompleted IS NULL It allows me to use a SQL Server database as a work queue and periodically poll the database with this query for work. If the work item completed with success, I mark it as done and proceed until there's nothing more to do. What I don't like is that I could theoretically be interrupted at any point and if I'm in-between success and marking it as done, I could end up processing the same work item twice. I might be a bit paranoid and this might be all fine but as I understand it there's no guarantee that that won't happen... I know there's been similar questions on SO before but non really answers with a definitive answer. This is a really common thing, yet the ASP.NET hosting environment is ill equipped to handle long-running work. Please share your thoughts.

• InteropServices COMException when executing a .net app from a web CGI script on Windows Server 2003

  Disclaimer: I'm completely clueless about .net and COM. I have a vendor's application that appears to be written in .net and I'm trying to wrap it with a web form (a cgi-bin Perl script) so I can eventually launch this vendor's app from a separate computer. I'm on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SE SP1 system and I'm using Apache 2.2 for the web server and ActivePerl 5.10.0.1004 for the cgi script. My cgi script calls the vendor's app that resides on the same machine using the Perl backtick operator. ... $result = "Result: " . `$vendorsPath/$vendorsExecutable $arg1 $arg2`; ... Right now I'm just running IE web browser locally on the server machine and accessing "http://localhost/cgi-bin/myPerlScript.pl". The vendor's app fails and logs a debug message that includes the following stack trace (I changed a couple names so as to not give away the vendor's identity): ... System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80043A1D): 0x80040154 - Class not registered --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at System.RuntimeType.InvokeDispMethod(String name, BindingFlags invokeAttr, Object target, Object[] args, Boolean[] byrefModifiers, Int32 culture, String[] namedParameters) at System.RuntimeType.InvokeMember(String name, BindingFlags invokeAttr, Binder binder, Object target, Object[] args, ParameterModifier[] modifiers, CultureInfo culture, String[] namedParameters) at VendorsTool.Engine.Core.VendorsEngine.LoadVendorsServices(String fileName, String& projectCommPath) ... When I run the vendors app from the Windows command line on the server machine with the exact same arguments that the cgi script is passing it runs just fine, so there's something about invoking their app via the web script that is causing a problem. This problem is likely security related because the whole thing runs just fine on a Windows XP Pro machine (both command line and web invocation). I actually developed my web script there and got it completely working there before I tried moving it to the Windows Server 2003 machine. So what's different about the Windows Server 2003 machine that would keep the vendor's .net app from being executed successfully by a web cgi script? Can I fix this problem somehow to make it work on my server or will the vendor have to make a change to their .net app and ship out a new version? I'm probably the only person in the world who is trying to execute this vendor's app from a separate program, so I hate to bother the vendor with the issue if there's a workaround that I can implement myself here on my server machine. Plus, I'm in kind of a hurry and I don't want to wait 4 or 6 months for the vendor to put in a fix and deploy a new version. Thanks for any advise you can give.

I want to use the Biztalk Adapter for SAP RFC calls within a .NET Application (as a replacement of the SAP Connector for .NET, which is unfortunately no longer maintened by SAP and I don't can use third party products like "ErpConnect"). • ASP.NET MVC 2 InputExtensions different on server than local machine

  Hi everyone, So this is kind of a crazy problem to me, but I've had no luck Googling it. I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 application (under .NET 4.0) running locally just fine. When I upload it to my production server (under shared hosting) I get Compiler Error Message: CS1061: 'System.Web.Mvc.HtmlHelper' does not contain a definition for 'TextBoxFor' and no extension method 'TextBoxFor' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Web.Mvc.HtmlHelper' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) for this code: <%= this.Html.TextBoxFor(person => person.LastName) %> This is one of the new standard extension methods in MVC 2.
