  • .NET without use of DLL's

    - by Kieran
Hi SO community I have been issued a problem with security. A bank will not allow use of DLL's in the project. What sort of structure would be needed to allow DataAccess and or the use of external services (like an email client mailchimp, icontct). has anyone else encountered this sort of problem before? If they have how should the project be structured (.net 3.5+). Thanks, KJ

  • Has anyone "learned how to program in 21 days?"

    - by Sheehan Alam
I'm not a fan of these learn how to program in X amount of days books. Some even boast, learn how to program in 24 hours. This is a joke and an insult to me as a software engineer who went through a rigorous discipline in computer science and mathematics. So a question to the community, have you benefited from these become a programmer quick books?

  • Importance of verifying user email on web signup

    - by sunwukung
I know this question is crazy - but my employers client is demanding that email verification be removed from the sign up process (they feel it is impeding sign up). I wanted to garner feedback from the programming community at large as to their experience and opinions regarding sign up and email verification - and the possible consequences of removing this safeguard.

  • Looking for similar projects: Iphone/Android + Google Maps + "external" database = sightseeing map

    - by sniurkst
Hello, sorry, it's not exactly a programming question, but I am currently in a research state and looking for similar projects, so I could analyze them: It should be application to iPhone or Android or other mobile platform, where, basically, user can access map with "places of interest" and add it's own "place of interest" (with photo and description). Kind of, community generated sightseeing map. I know it is quite simple and not a groundbreaking idea, but my google-fu is quite weak and I can't find anything like that.

  • How to surpress screen savers on Linux?

    - by Die in Sente
I need to prevent the screen saver from running while my application is running. I know how to do this on the Windows versions, with SendInput calls, but I need to do something similar for Linux ports. It looks complicated, because ideally, I'd like something that would work on multiple Linux distros (SuSe, Red Hat, Ubunutu...) and it looks like there are at least 3 different screen-saver frameworks: xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver, and something else in KDE.

  • Qt - QPushButton text formatting

    - by Narek
I have a QPushButton and on that I have a text and and icon. I want to make the text on the button to be bold and red. Looked at other forums, googled and lost my hope. Seems there is no way to do that if the button has an icon (of course if you don't creat a new icon wich is text+former icon). Is that the only way? Anyone has a better idea?

  • 'Similarity' in Data Mining

    - by Shailesh Tainwala
In the field of Data Mining, is there a specific sub-discipline called 'Similarity'? If yes, what does it deal with. Any examples, links, references will be helpful. Also, being new to the field, I would like the community opinion on how closely related Data Mining and Artificial Intelligence are. Are they synonyms, is one the subset of the other? Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

  • Azure scalability over XML File

    - by dayscott
What is the best practise solution for programmaticaly changing the XML file where the number of instances are definied ? I know that this is somehow possible with this csmanage.exe for the Windows Azure API. How can i measure which Worker Role VMs are actually working? I asked this question on MSDN Community forums as well: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsazure/thread/02ae7321-11df-45a7-95d1-bfea402c5db1

  • GIT <> SVN interchangeable patch-files

    - by pagid
Hi, I maintain a subproject which is running on the project's SVN server. I personally prefer to work with Git - the problem is that the entire community uses SVN, expects RFCs with a SVN compatible patch-file and people are familiar with SVN and send bugfixes agains that SVN repository too. Therefore my only problem is to create patch files which are compatible with Git and SVN at the same time. Is there some kind of smart shell-script or even a buildin feature I'm not aware of? Cheers

  • Automatically reporting javascript errors to the developer

    - by Cine
As most production environments we have setup something to send us a notification if there is an error in our web application. The problem is ofcourse that this only covers errors on the server side. My question to the community is: What are you doing about client side errors, especially in javascript? And what about other quality of service issues, such as slow processing and other things that might be due to the client machine?

  • Add to SortedSet<T> and its complexity

    - by Andrei Taptunov
MSDN states the following SortedSet(T).Add Method : If Count is less than the capacity of the internal array, this method is an O(1) operation. Could someone please explain "how so"? I mean when adding new value we need to find a correct place to add a value (comparing it with another values) and internal implementation looks like a "Red-Black tree" with O (log N) insertion complexity.

  • How to draw on JPanel on fixed position?

    - by kovike
I have JPanel wrapped in JScrollPane and I want the rectangle to be drawn always on the same position = moving with scrollbars wont affect the visibility of the rectangle. I tried following code: public void paintComponent(Graphics g) { g.setColor(Color.red); g.drawRect(50, (int)getVisibleRect().getY(), 20 , 20); } but it only repaints the rectangle when size of whole JPanel is changed.

  • RequiredFieldValidator not working.

    - by ProfK
With the following simple mark-up, I get very strange behaviour in FF and IE8. If I give the textbox focus, and tab out, nothing happens. If I give a user name value, and erase it immediately, nothing happens. However, only when I supply a user name, tab away, the erase it and tab away again, do I finally get a red star "required" mark. The summary doesn't show at all.

  • Function that converts hex color values to an approximate color name?

    - by dclowd9901
I don't suppose anyone knows of a function (PHP, preferably) that can take a hex color code and give an approximate color name for that hex value. I don't need a solution with 100s of colors. Even if it just amounted to the colors white, black, red, green blue, brown orange and yellow, I'd be pretty well in shape. If you don't know of an existing resource, does anyone know of a good way to approach this problem? Thanks in advance for the help.
