  • NX Client running on OS X 10.6.3 => NX Server Ubuntu 10.04: weird keymapping issue

    I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 at work after switching from vista. After being (expectedly) disappointed with performance over VNC (via VPN) when logging in from home, I came across the NOMACHINE suite. Last week, I upgraded from OS X 10.6.2 = 10.6.3 at home. After that, I also updated my NX Client at home to the latest version, as there were issues with recent changes in the OSX X11 setup that rendered the NX connection useless. At that point, everything worked fine. Fast forward, I upgraded from 9.10 = 10.04 on my work machine the next day, and after coming home and trying to log-in remotely, I noticed that the "s" and "m" keys, when pressed locally, acted as if the meta key was being pressed on the remote machine. That is, the "s" key opens in the Ubuntu login menu (the power icon), and the "m" key opens the messaging menu. I found some info on using xmodmap to remap keys, however, I can't even begin to fathom what keys I could remap to solve this issue. Any ideas?

  • How can I stream audio signals from various devices/computers to my home server?

    I currently have a headless home server set up (running Ubuntu 12.04 server edition) running a simple Apache HTTP server. The server is near an audio receiver, which controls a set of indoor and outdoor speakers in my home. Recently, my father purchased a Bluetooth adapter, which our various laptops and cellphones can connect to, outputting the music to the speakers. I was hoping to find a solution that worked over Wi-Fi, namely because it won't cost anything (I already have a server with an audio card), and it doesn't depend on Bluetooth. Is there any cross-platform (preferably free and open-source) solution that I can use which will allow me to stream audio to my home server, over my home network, from a wide variety of devices (laptops running Windows/Linux or cellphones running Android/BB/iOS)? I need something that works at least with Windows and Android. Also, just to clairfy, I want something that simply allows devices to connect to my server and output an audio signal without any action on the server end (since it's a server hidden away near my receiver). Any subsequent connection attempt should be dropped, so only one device can be in control of the stereo at once.

    I got a new screen for a Dell Inspiron 1545. The old screen says Dell Inspiron 1545 LP156WH1 (TL)(C1?) HD and the new one says Dell Inspiron 1545 LP156WH1 (TL)(C1?) LCD Does that make a difference? All I can get to work on the new screen is the backlight. The old screen had a crack. Now when I plug the old one in, it will not turn on at all. Could I have blown the inverter or messed up the cable?

    I have an interesting problem. I'm trying to create symbolic links in a single folder, for all files in a directory which are larger than a specified size. For clarification, here is an example: /Files /Large_Files /LargeFile1_symlink /LargeFile2_symlink /Folder1 /file_a /file_b /Folder2 /LargeFile1 /Folder3 /LargeFile2 /file_c What I have so far to try to accomplish this is: find -size +102400 -exec ln -s $PWD/{} Large_Files/ \; However, this find produces ./LargeFile1 So my symlink command produces ln -s /Files/Folder2/./LargeFile1 Large_Files/ My question is, would it be possible to use the basename command to separate out only the filename so this command will work? Or does anybody have a suggestion on how to do this without writing a script, or give me an example on writing a script? I've never done scripting before, but I do know Java, but don't want to take the time to do all this in Java. Thank you for any help! Edit: adding tags

    I have a Windows Vista laptop that won't boot at all. On the D: drive I have DriveImage XML images of C: drive, but I don't have a BartPE boot CD and I don't have a Vista install CD. How can I image the C: using the images on D: if I can't make a BartPE CD because I can't boot to Windows? Is there a BartPE (with DriveImage XML plugin) iso I can download from somewhere, or what can I do? Thanks.

    I'd love to get this LCD monitor, but I'm wondering if I should hold out until more LED monitors are on the market. I really like the brightness of the 27" iMac monitor and the above monitor is only rated at 5 cd/m2 less than that monitor, but wouldn't a back lit LED monitor appear to be much brighter than an LCD monitor? How do LCD monitors compare to their LED counterparts?

    I'm trying to rsync a few external hard drives over to my new Nas DS412+ but I'm noticing it's stupid slow. I'm trying it via mounting the backup folder via afb on a Mac. I was told this may be the wrong way to do it. I recently just turned on "network backup" on the Synology and am now running rsync over ssh like: rsync -ar --progress . admin@localip:/backup/path Is this the right way to do it now? Will it be faster? Is there something else I can do to make it faster? Edit: I'm getting a ton of: "failed to set permissions" "failed to set times" now that I run it. What do I do?

  • Computer randomly freezes when playing games

    My computer just randomly freezes when playing certain games. It has happened to me in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Call of Duty 4, and Blacklight: Retribution. It has not happened to me with other games like Tribes: Ascend yet, which leads me to believe it is a software-side issue related to maybe DirectX or PhysX? Also, temperatures seem stable. I used RivaTuner combined with MSI Afterburner, and at the time of freezing with BF:BC2, it gives: 62C, 67% GPU usage and 78.8FPS. During the session the max I have seen was 65C and 97% GPU usage. On Blacklight: Retribution, I've heard other people complain about the problem too. This is why it is such a mystery to me, is this actually a driver problem, or more a game problem? I've been able to play these games for long until I re-installed Windows 7 (because it was growing too full and slow). Before I had a 32bit Ultimate version, and now 64bit. Specs: O/S: Windows 7 64bit Ultimate CPU: Intel i5-750 @ Default 2.66 GHz GPU: ASUS EAH5770 1GB PSU: CoolerMaster Real Power M520 (520W) MB: Gigabyte P55M-UD2 Catalyst Control Center version (in "About"): 2012.0214.2218.39913

Example of what I mean: ssh [email protected] "remote command to execute" ...or do I have to Remote Desktop just to do this?   • Can't connect to a share.

    Hello, I have a laptop with a Windows XP Tablet Edition installed. I have several users setup on the laptop (mostly me and my kids). When I try to connect to its administrative share via \DadLaptop\c$ from a Windows 2000 Professional machine, it prompts me for a user name and password. However, after I enter it, it always tells me "incorrect password or unknown username". As a test I setup another share, called "test" and tried to connect to that. It worked fine, didn't even ask me for a password, just connected to it and that's that. All the networking is wireless. I am connecting with an admin account (admin on the target computer). What am I missing? Why can't I connect to an administrative share?

    Now, Let me explain the situation. I am having a query regarding Wi-Fi network. I am having PC & laptop. I requested my Wi-Fi providers that I want connection in my PC. So that - Wi-Fi provider set up an Antenna on my building Terrace - They joined a cable to pc & that Antenna. ( I think using RJ45 connector ) - The reason behind this - my does not have a built in Wi-Fi adapter. Now - almost laptops have built in Wi-Fi. Now - On terrace there is Wi-Fi with superb speed. But on my flat - Wi-fi comes with low speed. So, when ever I use internet on my pc - it has great speed - but my laptop works with low speed. The reason behind this - PC is catching wifi from terrace & laptop is catching the wifi from it's own place. Now, My question is something like this. Can we place an antenna or something like that & connect it to laptop for better wifi speed? Also, I guess the answers would differ depending on the language, so I'm looking for information related to the English/en-US versions only (I believe there is an en-GB version as well?) The Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant allows one to create USB/DVD (ISO) media: Is the media customised per-PC in any way, or are copies created on different PCs with different base OSes (XP/Vista/7) exactly the same? If the ISOs are not customised, are they exactly the same content-wise as the Upgrade DVDs available for purchase?

    I have two partitions, one for windows the other for Mac OS X. Recently, my Mac OS X crashed and my partition rendered unbootable. When I insert Mac OS X's installation CD everything seems normal from startup, to choosing whether to boot from Windows or CD, until the CD boots. The screen flickers and it becomes extremely dark can barely see anything but I can see that it is booted correctly. I tried increasing brightness but that did not work. After hours of trying to read what is on the screen and guessing where to click the installation did not go through... It took more than a couple of hours so I restarted. Now the partition is accessible through Windows but is not bootable. TL;DR Is it possible to install Mac OS X on a visible partition without the CD through Windows XP?... Thanks

    I'm working on installing django and running it on my system. I have a problem though, in this tutorial creating a project is explained by running the command django-admin.py startproject mysite My issue is that this doesn't work. I changed to the directory where django-admin.py is located and ran the command chmod +x django-admin.py with no results. I tried adding the directory with the file to my path without results. I ended up fixing my problem with this command python /location/of/django-admin.py startproject mysite which yielded the outcome I expected. My problem is: What do I need to change/configure such that command django-admin.py startproject mysite would be sufficient?   • How to use Windows mini-dump files?

    I have a Mini-ITX Intel DH61AG mobo w/ an Intel i3 processor and 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM. Anyways, this computer has been crashing kind of frequently. It is not an OS problem, as I have used Ubuntu (and had kernel panics), Windows 7, and Windows 8 (BSODs aren't going to keep me from tinkering =p) Anyways, each of these OSes have had problems, so I ran a HDD check, and I know it is not a heat issue because I tested the processor for a few days when I first put the computer together. When I ran memtest86+, however, I got an error - so I did individual testing, and both chips came back good, did a really intense test with both of them again (took half a day), and no errors. So, I still think the problem could be RAM, but I am not sure - I tested it pretty extensively (might let it run all night again tonight)... which brings me to my point. Could someone explain to me (in simple terms if possible) how to READ the minidump files of Windows computers? I've tried before with a guide I found online, but failed miserably (can't remember guide, either =/). I'm fine with installing the software, I will probably need it sometime in the future as well. I have seen a few other posts on SU that just ask people to post minidump logs, but I feel as if that is too localized. Would someone be able to explain this?   • How to fix skipping/stuttering audio in Google Chrome

    If I play Google Music, or a Youtube video in the Chrome browser, and then open a new tab and start typing the address bar, the audio will quickly cut in and out as I am typing (with almost every letter I type). It also is choppy if I play the video and start typing in the start menu. I can not repeat this behavior using internet explorer. Based on that Im thinking that it maybe a problem with the version of flash Chrome is using but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Im running 32 bit windows 7, i.e. 9, and chrome 23.0 pc is a lenovo t43p. I have the latest sound drivers. i.e. is using flash 11.5.502. chrome is using : Adobe Flash Player - Version: 11.5.31.2 Only one (this) plugin is listed for flash in the chrome plugins list.

  • ReadyBoost in Windows 7

    I've bought an SD card today for my phot frame, but when I inserted it into my notebook I saw I could use it for ReadyBoost. Some background I'm a .net developer, using VMs and developing web applications (and Sharepoint). I use an HP notebook machine with Core 2 Duo 2GHz + 4GB RAM + 320 7200 HD. I simultaneously run Visual Studio 2010 with some plugins SQL Server Firefox with at least 10 tabs Chrome with about 5 tabs IIS VM with Server 2008 machine Sharepoint and occasionally also Photoshop and some InDesign as well. So I don't let my machine have a break. :D Question If I buy myself some really fast SDHC card (like SanDisk 16GB Extreme 30MB/s - is there anything faster) and use it with my Windows 7 ReadyBoost, will I see any performance gain? Is it going to work something similar to Seagate's HybridDrive Momentus with 4GB of solid state drive? What could I actually expect if I do put this card into my machine? And what would be recommended size? Observations I guess redirecting page file to it would speed up the system. Some VM machines on it would probably run faster as well because they could run parallel to HD host system I guess. Am I right or wrong?
