  I’m trying to make TraceTune (and eventually ClearTrace) work the way I do.  My typical query tuning session goes like this: Run a trace and upload to TraceTune/ClearTrace Tune the slowest queries Goto 1 I might do this two or three times in one day and then not come back to it again for weeks or even months.  This is especially true for those clients that I only visit a few times per month.  In many cases I’ll look at a query, decide I can’t do much with it and move on.  I needed a way to capture that information. TraceTune now lets you enter a comment for a query.  It can be as simple or as complex as you like.  The comment will be shown inline with the execution history of that query. This should let you walk back through your history with a query and decide whether you should spend more time tuning it.

The following are the steps that I performed for installing: I installed the setup file from the link given below: wget http://download.oracle.com/otn-pub/java/jdk/7u1-b08/jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz I have a file: jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz I Untared it: tar -xvf jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz sudo mv ./jdk1.7.0_01 /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01 sudo update-alternatives –config java Here it gave me the following output: There is only one alternative in link group java: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java Nothing to configure. sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01/jre/bin/java 1(I entered 1 here.) sudo update-alternatives --config java java -version. It showed the following output java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) I am not sure if jdk1.7.0 is installed as its showing the version as 1.6.0_26.

• What does the fan speed sensor really report?

  I have an overheating issue on my netbook (ASUS EeePC 1015PW), which I'm trying to troubleshoot. Using lm-sensors while overheating gave me this output : acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +86.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) eeepc-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter fan1: 4089 RPM coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +82.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +80.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) But I can't hear the fan. So I enabled manual pwm controling and set the fan to full speed, and after a few minutes I got this output : acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +65.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) eeepc-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter fan1: 4016 RPM coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +62.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +58.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) And this time I could hear the fan spinning. So there's quite obviously an issue with either fan control or fan monitoring. Hence the question : what kind of physical information does the fan sensor really report? Thank you PS. I should have added that the computer is a small, hard-to-disassemble netbook, so I can't and don't want to try experiments like "block the fan and see what the sensor reports".

The concept is: each time a column value changes, the checksum also changes. You can use this simple method to see if a table has changed very easily, however, beware, different column values may generate the same checksum. • Grab sound of a SDL game with ffmpeg/avconv

  I'm trying to make a screencast of a SDL game which I developed some years ago, with the following command: sleep 5 && avconv -f x11grab -s 1366x768 -r 25 -i :0.0 -same_quant screen_cast.mkv (in this 5 seconds of sleep, I open the game). But the generated video (screen_cast.mkv) doesn't capture audio. I use for my game the SDL_Mixer library, with default configuration (22050 for frequency, AUDIO_S16SYS for format, and 2 channels). What's the problem? (with options -f alsa -i pulse it doesn't work either).

• Connect to bluetooth device from command line

  Background: I'm using my bluetooth headset as audio output. I managed to get it working by the long list of instructions on BluetoothHeadset community documentation, and I have automated the process of activating the headset as default audio output into a script, thanks to another question. However, since I use the bluetooth headset with both my phone and computer (and the headset doesn't support two input connections) in order for the phone not to "steal" the connection when handset is turned on, I force the headset into a discovery mode when connecting to the computer (phone gets to connect to it automatically). So even though the headset is paired ok and would in "normal" scenario autoconnect, I have to always use the little bluetooth icon in the notification area to actually connect to my device (see screenshot). What I want to avoid: This GUI for connecting to a known and paired bluetooth device: What I want instead: I'd want to make the bluetooth do exactly what the clicking the connect item in the GUI does, only by using command line. I want to use command line so I can make a single keypress shortcut for the action, and would't need to navigate the GUI every time I want to establish a connection to the device. The question: How can I attempt to connect to a specific, known and paired bluetooth device from command line? Further question: How do I tell if the connection was successful or not?

• What camera to choose for using with JMF (Java Media Framework)

  For the past 2-3 weeks I've been searching for different ways to implement custom video streaming and in more general video capturing and manipulating, going through DVR-cards, Video Capture Cards and stuff like that. Somehow JMF was able to stay out of my sight for all this time, but since I find out about it I'm more and more sure that this is a comfortable level for me to start playing around with video and stuff. One major topic that occurs to me while searching for more info was the presence of many posts where people were complaining about the fact that any particular camera ( most of the time I think they mean web cameras) doesn't work with JMF. Even though there are a lot of different cameras (not necessarily a web cam) that are not that expensive I want to play it safe and buy one that is proven to work well with the JMF. Also due to lack of experience maybe this is irrelevant but since I'll buy the camera mostly for learning and experimenting I want to have the maximum freedom possible to mess with different features, options and so on.

  I'm running Ubuntu from USB media, which has a drive capacity of 250 GB, all existing as one FAT32 partition. However, when I created the bootable Ubuntu drive, only 4.79 GB were allocated for usage. Rather than put files directly into the /cdrom where the drive is mounted, I want to expand what is listed here in aufs to be at least 200 GB. I'm hopeful that I can do this live. PS: I know is specific to Altova and their Dev Tools, but just like Eclipse and Visual Studio it is one of the widest used toolkits for XML related development & programming. • How to make schema dumps comparable between Windows and Linux

  I have two systems running, one on linux and the other on windows. From the linux box, I ran pg_dump against both systems and dumped the schema. pg_dump command: pg_dump -h HOST -U USER -s -f /tmp/out.sql DB_NAME After I removed all of the "--" comments, I diffed the files together. Diff output snippet, linux compared to windows: - ADD CONSTRAINT sys_c004775 FOREIGN KEY (ruleid) REFERENCES rule(ruleid); + ADD CONSTRAINT sys_c004775 FOREIGN KEY (ruleid) REFERENCES "rule"(ruleid); The linux dump does not quote any entities and windows does. Is this a function of some encoding or just of a difference between windows and linux? Is there an option in pg_dump to make the output more consistent?

  I accidentally installed Ubuntu to one of my data drives from Windows. The drive was a NTFS drive and contained about 80 GB of important data. The size of the drive is 110 GB. Its new file system is ext4. In an attempt to recover the data, I downloaded foremost and tried the following commands: foremost -i / -o /media/281C8DB01C8D7998/Recovery/ -T -v foremost -i /dev/sda7 -o /media/281C8DB01C8D7998/Recovery/ -T -v (sda7 is the drive in question.) It appears that with either command, foremost gets stuck reading some file. • Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts? • Using Gentoo's `ebegin`, `eend` etc under Ubuntu

  We're quite fond of the style of the ebegin, eend, eerror, eindent etc commands used by Portage and other tools on Gentoo. The green-yellow-red bullets and standard layout make for very quick spotting of errors, on what would otherwise be very grey command line output. #!/bin/sh source /etc/init.d/functions.sh ebegin "Copying data" rsync .... eend $? Producing output similar to: * Copying data... [ OK ] As a result we're using these commands in some of our common shell scripts, which is a problem for the people using Ubuntu and other linuxes. (linuces? linuxen? linucae? other distros) On Gentoo these functions are provided by OpenRC, and imported with functions.sh file (whose exact position seems to vary slightly). But is there a simple way of getting these commands on Ubuntu? In theory we could replace them all with dull echos, but we'd rather not?

  I'm trying to record an mpeg2 video stream from a website that doesn't have the greatest bandwidth. The video often buffers. I want to download the stream and watch it offline. The extract stream format received is: Stream #0.0[0x44]: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 192 kb/s Stream #0.1[0x45]: Video: mpeg2video (Main), yuv420p, 704x576 [PAR 16:11 DAR 16:9], 15000 kb/s, 27.19 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn, 50 tbc I use the following tool to transocde the stream: ffmpeg -i "http://url" -y -vcodec libx264 -b 3000k -acodec copy /tmp/stream.mp4 Unfortunately after a few seconds ffmpeg stops recording with an error [mpegts @ 0x1f0b9c0] PES packet size mismatch [mp2 @ 0x1f14640] incomplete frame Error while decoding stream #0.0 [mpeg2video @ 0x1f16860] ac-tex damaged at 0 26 [mpeg2video @ 0x1f16860] Warning MVs not available I've tried encoding with vlc as well with similar issues. I tried (inside a batch file): for /r test %%f in (foo bar.txt) do if exist %%f echo %%f where the command is the simple echo. It does not work because the space is skipped and I get no output. This works but it is not what I need: for /r test %%f in (foobar.txt) do if exist %%f echo %%f It prints: C:\test\folder1\foobar.txt C:\test\folder2\foobar.txt C:\test\folder3\foobar.txt I tried using the quotation mark (") but it does not work: for /r test %%f in ("foo bar.txt") do if exist %%f echo %%f It does not work because the quotation mark is still included in the output: C:\test\folder1\"foo bar.txt" C:\test\folder2\"foo bar.txt" C:\test\folder3\"foo bar.txt"

• Showing Egde Shaped Event Duration in StreamInsight using Debugger

  Whilst writing some courseware I wanted to be able to see the start and end times of Edge shaped events from within the debugger.  A quick recap on Edge events At the start of the event you do not know the end time and most probably cannot work it out or you should be using one of the other shapes. You enqueue an event (Start Edge) with the start time and payload of the event.  The end time of the event is set to infinity When you see the end edge come through, you enqueue another event (End Edge) with the previous start time and payload and restate the event’s end time.  This is the Retract Event All seems simple enough.  The problem is the debugger is a little shy about showing you what you need but you can get it to show you everything by also reading this article Here’s what I mean. Here is what the Event Debugger looks like by default when viewing 2 complete edge events.  Notice how all the end times are set to infinity   The above does not tell you for how long an event was valid.  I then add the “NewEndTime” column to the debugger output and there I can now see the duration of events.  You will see the Retract events (End Edge) have the same start time and payload as their respective start events (Start Edge)   You can follow the exact same logic when looking at Interval shape events.  They look a little different on the output adapter but using this article you can easily see what is happening.
