• Detect whether certain IIS features are present from InstallScript

  I have an InstallScript project written in InstallShield 2010, which, amongst other things, shells out to several .NET MSI installers that install web apps. If any of these web apps are selected for installation by the end user, I need to check for the following optional IIS features from InstallScript code before allowing the install to proceed: ASP.NET (IIS 6+) WCF HTTP Activation (IIS 7+) IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility (IIS 7+) Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Ideally I'm looking for registry values that I can check directly from InstallScript code, but I guess some kind of WMI or COM check would be OK as well. PS: In case it's relevant, we need to support all versions of IIS from 5.1 onwards at this time. If 5.1 support is a problem, we may consider dropping it if we have to.

  This question is based on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/359424/detach-subdirectory-into-separate-git-repository Instead of detaching a single subdirectory, I want to detach a couple. For example, my current directory tree looks like this: /apps /AAA /BBB /CCC /libs /XXX /YYY /ZZZ And I would like this instead: /apps /AAA /libs /XXX The --subdirectory-filter argument to git filter-branch won't work because it gets rid of everything except for the given directory the first time it's run. I thought using the --index-filter argument for all unwanted files would work (albeit tedious), but if I try running it more than once, I get the following message: Cannot create a new backup. A previous backup already exists in refs/original/ Force overwriting the backup with -f Any ideas? TIA

  Hello, I really would like to write an app or apps for iPhone / iPad. I've never done this so far because most of my work has been in windows environment. I recently got an i7 with windows 7 and love it, and this is what I am using to do development on currently. I would love to try out writing a simple App on a mac for either an iPhone or iPad. The question I had was are there any developers using a macbook to do windows based programming as well as writing apps? And what is their setups like? (example: using bootcamp) Most importantly, is it recommended based on the experience they had doing so? any problems / performance issue? • Compiling Qt for Windows 98

  I need to support Windows 98. The Qt documentation claims this is possible, but there are no instructions. The distributed binaries don't run on Win98 and the majority of Qt applications I have sampled also don't. For several apps that do run on 98, I have asked authors how they did it, but the common answer is that it was accidental and they don't know what factors caused it. In searching the forums for help, I found only guesses that turned out to be wrong. For example, one belief is that to compile for Win9x, you must build the tools and the apps on that platform. Yet, things I found to run were built on newer versions of Windows. What is required to build the Qt dev tools and then applications for Win98? How about cross-compiling from WinXP or Linux? Are there specific components that can't be made to run on Win98? Are there particular difficulties with dynamic or static linking for Win98 support?

  Hi everyone, I'm designing a set of web services to allow our clients to connect from their apps to one of our systems. Our clients have their apps developed in all varieties of frameworks (.NET, Java, PHP, Python and even the occasional all JS app), so obviously WS is the way to go. Investigating a little about truly interop WS I've found that the way to go is to design first the WSDL and XSD and derive the implementations from there. What i'm really looking for is guidance if this is really the way to go. I've read that WCF creates interoperable WS but i'm not a fan of MS creating something standard. Should i use WCF or there is a good set of tools for designing WSDL and XSD without the pain i'm expecting. Thanks in advance

• Android pattern for activity "flows"

  I'm developing an android app that has a bunch of screens (activities) that are supposed to have "continue" and "back" buttons at the top. Can you tell me the right pattern for implementing this? I've seen some iPhone apps that have this but Android apps usually don't (I think partly because the back button is part of the phone). I found a post online about an Activity class that has "sub activities" which kind of seems like what I want to do, but I'm wondering if there's a simpler solution or pattern for creating flows like this (in which several activities are linked with continue/back buttons).

• Recommended ASP.NET Shared Hosting

  Ok, I have to admit I'm getting fed up with www.discountasp.net's pricing model and this annoyance has built up over the past 8 years or so. I've been with them for years and absolutely love them on the technical side, however it's getting ridiculously expensive for so little that you get. I mean here's my scenario: 1) I am running 2 SQL Server databases which costs me $10/ea per month so that's $20/month for 2 and I only get 500 mb disk space which is horrible 2) I am paying $10/mo just for the hosting itself which I only get 1 gig of disk space! I mean common! 3) I am simply running 2 small apps (Screwturn Wiki & Subtext Blog)...so I don't really care if it's up 99% or not, it's not worth paying a total of $300 just to keep these 2 apps running over discountasp.net Anyone else feel the same? Yes, I know they have great support, probably have great servers running behind this but in the end I really don't care as long as my site is up 95% or better. Yes, the hosting toolset rocks. But you know I bet you I can find a similar set somewhere else. I like how I can totally control IIS 7 at discountasp and I can control my own app pool etc. That's very powerful and essential. But anyone have any good alternatives to discountasp that gives me close to the same at a much more reasonable cost point? I mean http://www.m6.net/prices.aspx gives you 10 SQL Databases for $7 and 200 gigs disk space! I don't know about their tools or support but just looking at those numbers and some other hosts I've seen, I feel that discountasp.net is way out of line. They don't even offer any purchasing discounts such as it would be nice if my 2nd SQL Server is only $5/month not $10...stuff like this, to make it much more realistic and fair. Opinions (people who do have discountasp.net, people who have left them, or people who have another host they like)??? But geez $300 just to host a couple DBs and lightweight open source apps? Not worth the price they are charging. I'm almost at a price point that enables me to get a decent dedicated server! I really don't care about beta support. Not a big deal to me.

  I'm a web developer and I'm getting envious of all the cool iPhone apps. I know nothing about C or what ever language they use to make iPhone apps. I really have no idea where to start. What do I need to do? Should I take a class, buy a book? I have a pretty good grasp on programing, I do tons of HTML, CSS and Javascript development and some PHP and Action Scripting. I'm not very good with Object Oriented Programing but I think I could pick it up if I used it more. I love video tutorials like lynda.com or net.tutsplus.com. I learn best buy jumping in and getting my hands dirty.

  I would like to make a button in my iPad app (probably will be similar to iPhone apps) that when I push this button, all audio is muted, even when you exit the app. I don't see anyway that you can control the volume, although I'm sure other apps have that I have seen in the app store for the iPhone. I also read some places that doing this would reject you from the app store. How could I go about lowering, or highering the volume of the iPad from an app that works even when the app closes?   Hello, I'm stumbling in the data wilderness and feel very lost, so i am asking for help. I have done some database apps in VS (C#) winforms for some time, wpf lately. These are small to medium apps (embedded dbs, a bit of sql server), like a restaurants, cash registers and similar. (15-20 tables) Until now, i have done all my datasets by drag and drop in Visual Studio designer. I spent weeks on web trying to find some complete solution how to write complete solution with typed datasets by hand from scratch (DAL, B.Objects) in hope to learn some architecture patterns along the way, but without success. So, finally question. Can someone recommend me what to learn for this type of applications, maybe move away from datasets , use some ORM ( maybe overkill, i dont know). Point me in some direction please.

  Is it possible to create an application for Android, which can generate a video signal (HDMI or VGA) via USB? Any Android device has miniUSB port. Theoretically it's possible to create a small commutator device on microcontroller or microscheme, which will be a USB-host for Android device. You'll connect Android device with commutator and then connect commutator with monitor. For example, the scheme looks like: Android phone - commutator (USB-host) - TV/Monitor. Summary, I need to connect android phone with TV via miniUSB port. I found soft which can use miniUSB - HDMI cable, but those apps only for Motorolla Droid and HTC Evo. I'll glad to get links to existing apps or projects on that theme, to info about software generation HDMI-signal and connecting Android devices with another devices. • Sharing some info with all DLLs pulled into a process

  Hi all, We've got an Enterprise system which has many processes (EXEs, services, DCOM servers, COM+ apps, ISAPI, MMC snapins) all of which make use of many COM components. We've recently seen failures in some of the customer deployments, but are finding it hard to troubleshoot the cause. In order to track down the problem, we've augmented the entire source with logging statements where errors occur. In order to identify which logs came from what processes, the C++ logging code (compiled into all components) uses the EXE name to name the log. This is good for some cases, but not all - COM+ apps, ISAPI and MMC snapins all have system EXE names and the logs end up interleaved. I saw this post about shared data sections which might help, but what I don't understand is who decides what goes in the shared section. Is there any way I can guarantee that a particular piece of code writes into the shared section before anyone else reads it? Or is there a better solution to this problem?

• What's Your favorite f# use? where does f# makes life (a lot) easier (compared to c#)?

  I've skimmed the stack and did not get the overflow as there is probably no such question. I'm just learning f# and I am A seasoned c# and .net dev. I am into financial apps and currently F# helps me a lot with maths calcs like zero finding or minimum finding (although I still want some good maths library there). I see that processing multiple items (files or smth) tends to be easier, but my GUI (web, win) are still c# based. I am in the team of 5 devs and we know that the new tool is out, we are learning it after hours (to pimp ourselves up) but maybe we shouldn't bash the door somebody already opened. So in business apps, whats Your first killer part of soft You would code in F# (if You could and would know IT would be easier, faster, more testable, easier to maintain etc.? Business rules? ImageProcessing? Data processing? hope it's not to subjective. luke

• Model in sub-directory via app_label?

  In order to place my models in sub-folders I tried to use the app_label Meta field as described here. My directory structure looks like this: project apps foo models _init_.py bar_model.py In bar_model.py I define my Model like this: from django.db import models class SomeModel(models.Model): field = models.TextField() class Meta: app_label = "foo" I can successfully import the model like so: from apps.foo.models.bar_model import SomeModel However, running: ./manage.py syncdb does not create the table for the model. In verbose mode I do see, however, that the app "foo" is properly recognized (it's in INSTALLED_APPS in settings.py). Moving the model to models.py under foo does work. Is there some specific convention not documented with app_label or with the whole mechanism that prevents this model structure from being recognized by syncdb?

• i can't see a context menu of WPF windows app through VNC

  I can open a context menu but cannot see the opened menu list through VNC. (I know that i can open the context menu by checking the vnc server machine directly) I tested on different vnc servers / clients machines (although all of them are windows Vista), and different wpf app, but still I cant see any menu list. Is this a reported problem? I found some information about wpf problem relating to windows desktop, but i dont know about vnc. ADDED : I dont have this problem on windows native apps or windows forms apps under my vnc environment.

The app got approved in android store whereas itunes rejected it claiming below, "Apps may not use protected third party material such as trademarks, copyrights, patents or violate 3rd party terms of use.   I am trying to use the Google Contacts API to connect to a user's contact information, on my Google apps domain. Generating an access_token using the gdata api's ContactsService clientlogin function while using the API key for my project works fine, but I would prefer to not store the user's credentials, and from the information I have found that method uses OAuth1.0 So, to use OAuth2.0 I have: Generated a Service Account in the developer's console for my project Granted access to the service account for the scope of https://www.google.com/m8/feeds/ in the Google apps domain admin panel Attempted to generate credentials using SignedJwtAssertionCredentials: credentials = SignedJwtAssertionCredentials( service_account_name=service_account_email, private_key=key_from_p12_file, scope='https://www.google.com/m8/feeds/', sub=user_email') The problem I am running into is that attempting to generate an access token using this method fails. It succeeds in generating the token when I remove the sub parameter, but then that token fails when I try to fetch the user's contacts. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

• "Use windows xp style dpi scaling" disables automatic auto-hide of taskbar on W7. Workaround?

  We noticed that on W7 with DPI set to 125% or to 100% with ("Use windows xp style dpi scaling") turned off, our fullscreen mode (which sets the client rect of our window = desktop rect of the main monitor) no longer hides the task bar like it does for other settings. (The setting can be found in the Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display section after clicking on the "Set custom text size (DPI)" link) I found the following interesting article: http://www.mathies.com/weblog/?p=908 So I set out to try to work around the bug in other means than manually hiding/restoring the taskbar visibility but so far I've failed and currently believe it's a bug in W7 (and possibly vista). The following applications also fail to work properly in fullscreen mode (the taskbar is still visible): * Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 * Microsoft Word 2007 * Adobe Reader 9.1.3 These apps work (probably by hiding the task bar through the WIN32 API): * Powerpoint Slide Show I also tried creating a brand new MFC-based app and use its "SetFullScreenMode()" functionality but it fails in the same way as all other apps on the list. • Good File Organization Suggestions for Developer

  I am struggling a little with folder organization to organize the many projects that I work on. I work on OS X - right now I am using ~/Development/ as the root folder, and I have many types of projects. For example, I have my iPhone apps under ~/Development/Xcode I develop in many languages, from PHP, to Ruby, to Python, to Objective-C. So, for example, I might have a couple of open-source apps based on PHP where I am using the Zend framework. Some of these projects are for clients, others are tests/experiments when learning a new language or general experimenting. I am really interested in how other developers have organized code/projects and could pass along some advice to make it very easy to navigate through code/projects related to many languages and types of projects.

• Using ASP.Net 4.0 for new Dev projects

  I am currently in the early stages of developing a couple web applications, I have not written any code yet as I am still just gathering requirements and scoping things out. I want to target ASP.Net 4.0 winforms as the platform for these apps but I want to make sure there are no glaring issues with this new version before I commit. I understand that if I was porting an existing app from 2.0, 3.5 to 4.0 there may be issues but I am starting from scratch on these projects and plan to write these apps to support the new features of 4.0. Should I wait for the first service pack to come out? Just seems like more work to start with 3.5 now only to go back through and tweak things for 4.0 in just a few months or even before I finish the app. Our servers are Win 2K3 with IIS6 and MS SQL 2000, Should I expect any problems with VS 2010 and MS SQL 2000 in regards to Linq to SQL and EF?
