  Last week we were running contest Identify the Database Celebrity and we had received a fantastic response to the contest. Thank you to the kind folks at NuoDB as they had offered two USD 100 Amazon Gift Cards to the winners of the contest. We had also additional contest that users have to download and install NuoDB and identified the sample database. You can read about the contest over here. Here is the answer to the questions which we had asked earlier in the contest. Part 1: Identify Database Celebrity Personality 1 – Edgar Frank “Ted” Codd (August 19, 1923 – April 18, 2003) was an English computer scientist who, while working for IBM, invented the relational model for database management, the theoretical basis for relational databases. He made other valuable contributions to computer science, but the relational model, a very influential general theory of data management, remains his most mentioned achievement. • Where is the alternate installation ISO for Ubuntu Saucy?

  I would like to download the alternate installation ISO for the current release, Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, but I can't find it on the releases.ubuntu.com website. Aren't alternate ISOs provided anymore? I need the alternate ISO because Xorg crashes on recent versions of Ubuntu when using old SIS on board graphics. In fact, I just patched Ubuntu sources and generated a custom package for the xserver-xorg-video-sis driver on my PPA to try fix this problem, after installing with the alternate ISO.

• Create edges in Blender

  I've worked with 3DS Max in Uni and am trying to learn Blender. My problem is I know a lot of simple techniques from 3DS max that I'm having trouble translating into Blender. So my question is: Say I have a poly in the middle of a mesh and I want to split it in two. Simply adding an edge between two edges. This would cause a two 5gons either side. It's a simple technique I use every now and then when I want to modify geometry. It's called "Edge connect" in 3DS Max. In Blender the only edge connect method I can find is to create edge loops, not helpful when aiming at low poly iPhone games. Is there an equivalent in blender?

• SSIS Expression Editor & Tester

  Published today on CodePlex is the SSIS Expression Editor & Tester project. If you want to try it just pop over to CodePlex and download it. About five years ago I developed my own expression editor control. It first got used in our custom tasks as the MS editor didn’t become available until SQL 2005 SP1, but even then it had some handy features I preferred. For example resizable panes so that if your expression result was more than two lines you could see them all. It also meant I could change the functions available in the tree view, the most obvious use being to add some handy snippets and samples that I used a lot. This quickly developed into a small expression testing tool. I’d develop complex expressions using my editor and then copy it back into the package itself. I have been meaning to make the tool available for some time and finally made the effort, the code is checked-in and the signed downloads are published on CodePlex. There are two flavours, SQL 2005 or 2008, and just a simple zip file to download and extract. The tool doesn’t need installing, and is completely portable. It does need SSIS to be installed on the local machine though. Each zip file contains two files: ExpressionTester.exe – The tool itself, run this. ExpressionEditor.dll – The reusable editor control. A while ago the gentlemen behind BIDS Helper noticed the editor on a task and asked about using it. This became incorporated into their variable window extensions feature. To try and help them and anyone else that wants to use the editor control, it is available as a single assembly that you can reference yourself, and of course all the source code is on CodePlex too. Just add a reference to the ExpressionEditor.dll assembly and you should be up and running in no time. There is a sample project Package Test in the source code which shows how to use the editor control form in it’s simplest form, or if you want to host control directly then the tester tool is a perfect example.

• Lightning is not compatible with Thunderbird 7.0.1

  I reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10 the other day and now when I try to install the Lightning extension in Thunderbird it states: Lightning is not compatible with Thunderbird 7.0.1. As extra information lightning is not comming up automaticly when searching for it within Thunderbird. You need to download it manually. And also I had it installed before I reformated the computer. Anybody has a solution to this issue?

• Developing for Chrome App/Android?

  I have been developing for win7 mobile (XNA/silverlight and will continue to do so, love everything about it) but I wanted to branch a few of my more polished games to google app store online, and perhaps android(though not sure, as with all the different versions it makes learning/loading applications a bit tricky) What is the most versatile language to start learning from chrome apps/android: Java would be excellent for android, but could I port it to a web app for chrome? (and its close to C#) Flash would work for a web app as I can just embed it into a html page (have done actionscript before, didn't care much for the IDE though), but would it also work on android? or I guess there is always C/C++ but haven't heard much about that, though I think it works for both (though C++ does interest me) Any advice would be excellent, thanks.

• Find a Faster DNS Server with Namebench

  One way to speed up your Internet browsing experience is using a faster DNS server. Today we take a look at Namebench, which will compare your current DNS server against others out there, and help you find a faster one. Namebench Download the file and run the executable (link below). Namebench starts up and will include the current DNS server you have configured on your system. In this example we’re behind a router and using the DNS server from the ISP. Include the global DNS providers and the best available regional DNS server, then start the Benchmark. The test starts to run and you’ll see the queries it’s running through. The benchmark takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. After it’s complete you’ll get a report of the results. Based on its findings, it will show you what DNS server is fastest for your system. It also displays different types of graphs so you can get a better feel for the different results. You can export the results to a .csv file as well so you can present the results in Excel. Conclusion This is a free project that is in continuing development, so results might not be perfect, and there may be more features added in the future. • how to learn ios game development using swift.. good starting point?

  I've published a simple app on the app store using objective-c. That was a good learning experience but I never grew to love the language. Later on I jumped into learning cocos2d in order to begin developing a game.. but objective-c always seemed really cumbersome to write. Eventually I put my project aside. Now that swift has come out.. It has made me think about developing games again.. I know that xcode has some project types geared towards game development, but since I'm a beginner in this area I really need some hand holding (books / tutorials) to get started. Cocos2d seems like its really stuck in that objective-c world. What's the best way for a beginner to learn game development using swift?

• Saucy upgrade causes problem in Eclipse

  Does anybody has been through this: Using Ubuntu 13.10 (with JDK 1.7.0_45). Download and uncompress Eclipse Kepler for Java EE Developers. The software menus are messed up. Other softwares i didn't notice similar problem. When i click any menu of eclipse, the drop-down seems to be "cutted". Somethimes the drop-down shows, but the options are invisible. I try Eclipse Indigo, the same problem occurs.

• Typical Method Of Building Puzzle Levels

  Hi I am designing a puzzle game for the iphone and was wondering as most puzzle games consist of the player progressing through multiple levels. You see for example Angry Birds has over 100 levels. Once the basis of the game is made, how do developers typically go about building their levels? Do they generally build them from scratch each one more or less, or work of their own template or have some other method which they use to tailor these levels? I imagine building so many levels is a long process, certainly if building each one individually. Do they do this, or have a method which speeds it up once they have their basis? Thanks.
