• What are your thoughts on a possible Developer's Television Network?

  I am a huge fan of informational television shows. Anytime I can learn something new by watching a television show, I am all for it. I wondered about how the community felt about a Developer Network for developers. What are the added advantages and disadvantages of having such a TV network? As an added bonus, what type of television shows should be aired on the network? Make up some fun and interesting television shows and elaborate. • How to refactor this database to allow sync. with smart clients?

  Howdy, I have inherited the following database: http://i46.tinypic.com/einvjr.png (EDIT: I cannot post images, so here goes the link) This currently runs 100% online thru an Asp.Net web app , but some employees will need to have offline access to this database to either get documents or to insert new documents for later synchronization when back to the office. What changes need to be made to this database scheme to support such scenario (sync smart clients with central web database)? Thanks! ps. I'm not an developer/dba, i'm just an mechanic engineer tasked with changing this app, so, take it easy on me :D ps1. We're using MSSQL Server for the online central database and MSSQL Compact for the smart client. ps2. the ImageGuid field of the images table is used to save the images to the file system. The web app takes the guid and create folders according to the first 3 initial letters to persist the image to the file system. ps3. The users of the smart client not always get server data first and then go modifying to sync later the changes. Most of the time they start working completely offline (with a blank local database) and later sync the data to the server. ps4. All the users of the smart client app have an account at the web app.

• Is Haskell "mainstream", or is it mainly used by hobbyists and academics?

  I came across a post where someone wrote something inaccurate about Haskell (won't go into it) and he got flammed for it. Which (pleasantly) surprised me. About 3 years ago I read this joke about Haskell: All the haskell programmers in the world can fit into a 747 and if that plane were to crash no one would care... or something along those lines. Which brings me to my question: how healthy is the Haskell community, anyway? Is Haskell "mainstream"? Is it mainly used by hobbiest and academics or someone making some serious money from it (which is the true yardstick of how good a language is - just kidding, geez!)?

• SQL GUID Vs Integer

  Hi I have recently started a new job and noticed that all the SQL tables use the GUID data type for the primary key. In my previous job we used integers (Auto-Increment) for the primary key and it was a lot more easier to work with in my opinion. For example, say you had two related tables; Product and ProductType - I could easily cross check the 'ProductTypeID' column of both tables for a particular row to quickly map the data in my head because its easy to store the number (2,4,45 etc) as opposed to (E75B92A3-3299-4407-A913-C5CA196B3CAB). The extra frustration comes from me wanting to understand how the tables are related, sadly there is no Database diagram :( A lot of people say that GUID's are better because you can define the unique identifer in your C# code for example using NewID() without requiring SQL SERVER to do it - this also allows you to know provisionally what the ID will be.... but I've seen that it is possible to still retrieve the 'next auto-incremented integer' too. A DBA contractor reported that our queries could be up to 30% faster if we used the Integer type instead of GUIDS... Why does the GUID data type exist, what advantages does it really provide?... Even if its a choice by some professional there must be some good reasons as to why its implemented?

  Developing a community site where everyone can post text, I'm looking for a markup filter: What is not part of the markup must be escaped (htmlspecialchars()) as it is. Should turn URL-s automatically into links Should support some form of basic markups (bold, image, url, pre, list) Should have a simple parser, that turns user input text into HTML Content on the site is public to everyone, XSS must not allowed to happen. What do you suggest? What markup language in the first place? BBCode? Wiki? Markdown? Are there any complete API-s with good examples? PHP is available on the server side. If there is a WYSIWYG-like texarea in addition (like here on SO) that would be a fantastic bonus!

• How to trace the connection pool in a Java Web application - DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO

  Hello, I need improve the traceability in a Web Application that usually run on fixed db user. The DBA should have a fast access for the information about the heavy users that are degrading the database. 5 years ago, I implemented a .NET ORM engine which makes a log of user and the server using the DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO package. Using a wrapper above the connection manager with the following code: DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO.SET_MODULE('" + User + " - " + appServerMachine + "',''); Each time that a connection get a connection from the pool, the package is executed to log the information in the V$SESSION. Has anyone discover or implemented a solution for this problem using the Toplink or Hibernate? Is there a default implementation for this problem? I've learned enough to write the procedure below -- but also enough to know that I don't know enough! This routine will have to go into a live environment soon, and it works, but I'm quite certain there are a number of c**k-ups and gotchas in it that I know nothing about. The routine copies data from table A to table B, replacing the data in table B. The tables could be in any database. I plan to call this routine multiple times from another stored procedure. • Could the assign function for containers possibly overflow?

  I ran into this question today and thought I should post it for the community's reference and/or opinions. The standard C++ containers vector, deque, list, and string provide an assign member function. There are two versions; I'm primarily interested in the one accepting an iterator range. The Josuttis book is a little ambiguous with its description. From p. 237... Assigns all elements of the range [beg,end); this is, is replaces all existing elements with copies of the elements of [beg,end). It doesn't say what happens if the size of the assignee container is different from the range being assigned. Does it truncate? Does it automagically expand? Is it undefined behavior?

• How would you make a blog with a TDD approach?

  I'm considering remaking my blog(currently in PHP, but <100 lines of non-layout code) in Ruby on Rails just for the fun of it. I want to make another project in Rails, but I should learn Rails(more than hello world) before I go to try to create a full project. Another thing I want to do while remaking my blog is to at least figure out what TDD is all about. So how would you go about taking a Test Driven approach to the creation of a blog? What tests would you write? How would you begin? Everytime I visualize writing a blog it'd end up needing a million tests for a single component to fully test it. How do I avoid writing too many tests? Also, I am making this community wiki because I intend for this to basically be made into a mini tutorial/knowledge base...

• WPF Skin Skinning Security Concerns

  I'm really new to the WPF in the .Net Framework (get that out of the way). I'm writing an application where the interface is very customizable by simply loading .xaml (at the moment a Page element) files into a frame and then mapping the controls via names as needed. The idea is to have a community of people who are interested in making skins, skin my application however they want (much like Winamp). Now the question arises, due to my lack of Xaml knowledge, is it possible to create malicious Xaml pages that when downloaded and used could have other embedded Iframes or other elements that could have embed html or call remote webpages with malicious content? I believe this could be the case. If this is the case then I two options; either I have an automated process that can remove these types of Xaml files by checking it’s elements prior to allowing download (which I would assume would be most difficult) or have a human review them prior to download. Are there alternatives I’m unaware of that could make this whole process a lot easier?

• iTunes Connect rejects my binary because I used a pre-release version of the SDK, what should I do?

I downloaded a pre-release version of the iPhone SDK and tried to update one of my existing apps using a binary I built with it. Obviously you are not supposed to do this but I had forgotten about the warning when I installed the pre-release SDK. Anyway - I have two questions: Can I simply set the base SDK to an earlier version in the build settings and get around this problem? If not, then what should I do?

• What programming language best bridges the gap between pseudocode and code?

  As I write code from now on, I plan to first lay out everything in beautiful, readable pseudocode and then implement the program around that structure. If I rank the languages that I currently know from easiest to most difficult to translate, I'd say: Lisp, Python, Lua, C++, Java, C I know that each language has its strength and weaknesses but I'm focusing specifically on pseudocode. What language do you use that is best suited for pseudocode-to-code? I always enjoy picking up new languages. Also, if you currently use this technique, I'd love to hear any tips you have about structuring practical pseudocode. Note: I feel this is subjective but has a clear answer per individual preference. I'm asking this here because the SO community has a very wide audience and is likely to suggest languages and techniques that I would otherwise not encounter.

  I'm reading a paper which mentions that a language for refactoring has three specific requirements. functional features (like ML) logical queries (like Datalog) path queries (like Datalog) I know what they mean by functional features, but I'm not totally clear on the latter two and can't find a clear explanation either.   Hi all I'm using JBPM 4.3 and trying hard to find a way to terminate one processInstance. First I simply used something like: executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); However I got exception thrown out. "exception while executing command org.jbpm.pvm.internal.cmd.EndProcessInstance java.lang.NullPointerException" Then I googled to find this post http://community.jboss.org/thread/146478, which didn't seem to give a resolution. I tried nevertheless to end all executions of the processInstance by calling ((ExecutionImpl) execution).end(); But the same exception was thrown again when I finally try to call executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); Did anyone have the same experience and solution?

• How can I get a value out of a jQuery object?

  I am returning some data (example below) and saving it to a jQuery object (or is this an array and I am confusing the two?) when I log the variable that is the object it has the values I am looking for but how do I access the data inside this object? code $itemPosition = { 'top': $item.offset().top, 'left':$item.offset().left }, console.log($itemPosition); This would log out (the in this case expected) top: 0 & left: 490. But how can I know work with those values? Also, while this it is probably obvious I am still in the early stages of learning jQuery/Javascript rest assured that reference books are on their way, but so far the SO community has been invaluable to my learning, so thanks for reading! After some investigations, I begin to ask myself (and you) that is XDoclet still supported by the community: JBoss, Eclipse (WTP), etc. ? Now my question is, do you know any open source project that suit for a newbie programmer. • Ruby on Rails: What are partial hash arguments and full set arguments?

  I'm using asserts_redirected_to in my unit tests, and I'm receiving this warning: DEPRECATION WARNING: Using assert_redirected_to with partial hash arguments is deprecated. Specify the full set arguments instead. What is a partial hash argument, and what is a full set argument? These aren't terms that I've seen used in the Rails community before, and the only relevant results I can find on Google for these are in reference to this deprecation warning. • NSAlert pops up for 3 times

  Hello community i have a big problem. i implemented an NSAlert in the viewDidLoad() of my app: UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:title message:alertMessage delegate:self cancelButtonTitle:ok otherButtonTitles:nil]; But the Alert pops up for 3 times, and then i can klick on it. Could it be that the viewDidLoad() starts for 3 times?   If you have checked out the new MSDN layout recently you will notice that there are tabs for example code: Do you see that there is room for F# (is there really anyone using that?) but not for Delphi! My question is: can we all ask Microsoft to add a Delphi tab and as a community take care off adding samples. • User Interface functionality modelling languages?

  I am looking for a UI functionality modelling language (UML-alike "thing", but for user interfaces) that is already accepted and maybe has its design patterns and handles the problem better than state or activity diagram. (If there is no such thing I'm planning to develop that BTW :)) This question came to mind as a result of a discovery that UML and its diagrams fails at describing complicated UI functionality with event-driven flow of execution (ie. javascript/jQuery big projects) EDIT: I've been thinking of using BPMN but It was not created for this purpose. EDIT2: See this community topic of mine - I decided to start developing said language.
