• Embarrassingly parallel workflow creates too many output files

  On a Linux cluster I run many (N > 10^6) independent computations. Each computation takes only a few minutes and the output is a handful of lines. When N was small I was able to store each result in a separate file to be parsed later. With large N however, I find that I am wasting storage space (for the file creation) and simple commands like ls require extra care due to internal limits of bash: -bash: /bin/ls: Argument list too long. Each computation is required to run through a qsub scheduling algorithm so I am unable to create a master program which simply aggregates the output data to a single file. The simple solution of appending to a single fails when two programs finish at the same time and interleave their output. I have no admin access to the cluster, so installing a system-wide database is not an option. How can I collate the output data from embarrassingly parallel computation before it gets unmanageable?

• Migrating from CVS to Mercurial - how to handle cross-repo symbolic links?

  I have a project that is stored in CVS as numerous modules/repositories. In several of the modules the CVS tree has symbolic links to the files in another tree. For example, the internal support tools have links to binary files (DLL, EXE) that are created and stored in the C# module. In all cases, the files are modified only in in the module where the files exist and are treated as read-only in the tree where the symbolic link exists. More often than not, the files are pulled to machines running MSWindows so the use of symbolic links on the developer machine is not an option. My question is this: Is there a mechanism in Mercurial that can provide the same capabilities?

• Why are there so many floats in the Android API?

  The default floating point type in Java is the double. If you hard code a constant like 2.5 into your program, Java makes it a double automatically. When you do an operation on floats or ints that could potentially benefit from more precision, the type is 'promoted' to a double. But in the Android API, everything seems to be a float from sound volumes to rectangle coordinates. There's a structure called RectF used in most drawing; the F is for float. It's really a pain for programmers who are casting promoted doubles back to (float) pretty often. Don't we all agree that Java code is messy and verbose enough as it is? Usually math coprocessors and accelerators prefer double in Java because it corresponds to one of the internal types. Is there something about Android's Dalvik VM that prefers floats for some reason? Or are all the floats just a result of perversion in API design?

• Unusual Subversion Folders Appeared After Update

  Hello Everyone, I have been using Subversion for about 2 years to manage a large C# project. On a recent Subversion update, a number of new folders were added to my source code folder: \conf \db \locks \hooks 35+ files were also added during the update, all appearing under the 4 new folders. I haven't changed any client (I use TortoiseSVN) or server software related to Subversion, so I'm puzzled why these folders and files were suddenly introduced. It also seems strange that files seemingly related to the internal workings of Subversion are now part of my source code repository. Can anyone shed some light on why this happened? • iPhone simple commercial barcode reader via camera

  Hey all, I've done some iPhone programming (safely midlevel) and now a requirement has come up for us to write a barcode reader that uses the iPhone camera. This is not for shopping or the general public but will be for internal use. My first thought was to simply programatically take a picture, upload it to server, and have a web service or something similar handle the heavy lifting of extracting the numbers out of the bar code. However I recently installed some apps already available on the iPhone that read bar codes, refer you to shopping sites, etc. and they seem to use the video camera to identify barcodes and extract the numbers. Does anyone know how this is being done or could point me to some open source or sample code?

• ASP.NET: How can I properly redirect requests with 404 errors?

  Hi, I'd like my ASP.NET MVC application to redirect failed requests to matching action methods of a certain controller. This works fine on my development machine running Windows 7, but not on my production machine running Windows 2008 R2. I set up my web.config as follows: <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="/Error/ServerError/500"> <error statusCode="403" redirect="/Error/AccessDenied" /> <error statusCode="404" redirect="/Error/FileNotFound" /> </customErrors> This customErrors section works fine on both of my machines (production and development) for 500 Internal Server errors. It also works fine for 404 errors on my development machine. However, it does not properly redirect 404 errors on the production machine. Instead of /Error/FileNotFound, I get the standard 404 page that comes with IIS 7. What could be the problem here?

  We'd like to create a simpler alternative to Excel's CUBEVALUE function for retrieving data from an OLAP server. The details aren't critical, but briefly, our function will "know" the source connection and accept a very simple ticker-like parameter and a date, in place of CUBEVALUE's MDX-style parameters. This is for internal use within our firm, just FYI. However, Excel has optimized CUBEVALUE so that calls to the OLAP server are batched. Question: Is there a way to code the new function so that it can similarly batch calls rather than issue a separate query for each cell?

• File listing application on Windows : what language ?

  I need to create a simple application/script able to list the hierarchy of a folder containing subfolders and files (mostly PDF), so that a user can browse easily these files and maybe have a quick preview of them. The files are all on an internal file server, so the dynamic aspects should all be client-sided. My goal (and what my boss want) is to provide some sort of an HTML page listing, to have something like this. The only problem I have now is that I cannot install anything on computers, so I cannot use PHP, Python, ... This application will only runs on Windows in Internet Explorer. What are the different possibilities I have ? I don't know if I can do this but I was thinking of using HTML + Flex. Thanks for helping.

  Hi, on our site we do url rewriting to generate massive amounts of database generated pages. on every page, there is a Login control for users. like this: Internal aspx page: /DB.aspx?id=123 User visible url: /ABC/123.aspx, /ABC/456.aspx ... (url rewritten) unfortunately, the tag on each page has an action attribute of "DB.aspx?id=123". when the user clicks the button the browser is posting to /ABC/DB.aspx?id=123 which of course does not exist. solutions i tried: 1. change the action attribute by subclassing HtmlForm. this destroys the all other forms on the site. 2. remove the action attribute (so that the browser is always posting to the same url). this works on the rewritten pages but on "/" (the default.aspx in the root dir) i get a message that the verb post is not allowed on "/" (iis 6 and i have no control over mappings) anybody?

• Restoring using SyncBack without profiles

  I backed up my internal hard drive (C:) using SyncBack onto an external (USB) hard drive with maximum compression. I then performed a clean install of Windows Vista onto the computer. I forgot to copy the SyncBack logs before the clean install. And now when ever I try to restore a directory, the RAR/ZIP files are copied to the system hard drive instead of extracting their contents to the hard drive. Also, SyncBack is not traversing the folders during the Restore process. How can I tell SyncBack to expand the compressed files? I am running the freeware version of SyncBack. I have to create new log files (unless SyncBack put them somewhere on the external drive). My alternative is to write a program that traverses the folders on the external drive and extracts files from the RAR/ZIP files. I am using Windows Vista, Service Pack 2, and the data size prior to backup was about 200 GB. (The backup process took over 72 hours due to "hiccups").

• Recording audio from many source/microphones

  I'm curious if it's possible to record audio from many sources and if not, what's the limitation. Many current devices have two internal microphones (basically for noise reduction). On top of that it's possible to plug additional external one using audiojack. You can as well have another audio stream via bluetooth headset. You are allowed to specify AudioSource in android but is it possible to do recording from many sources at the same time? I'm also interested how the situation look like on the iOS devices.

  Spring-data-rest does a great job exposing entities via their primary key for GET, PUT and DELETE etc. operations. /myentityies/123 It also exposes search operations. /myentities/search/byMyOtherKey?myOtherKey=123 In my case the entities have a number of alternate keys. The systems calling us, will know the objects by these IDs, rather than our internal primary key. Is it possible to expose the objects via another URL and have the GET, PUT and DELETE handled by the built-in spring-data-rest controllers? /myentities/myotherkey/456 We'd like to avoid forcing the calling systems to have to make two requests for each update. I've tried playing with @RestResource path value, but there doesn't seem to be a way to add additional paths.

  I am working on sending and receiving from clients and servers in java, and am stumped at the moment. the client socket is to contact a server at “localhost” port 4321. The client will receive a string from the server and alternate spelling the contents of this string with the server. For example, given the string “Bye Bye”, the client (which always begins sending the first letter) sends “B”, receives “y”, sends “e”, receives “ ”, sends “B”, receives “y”, sends “e”, and receives “done!”, which is the string that either client or server will send after the last letter from the original string is received. After “done!” is transmitted, both client and server close their communications. • Question about C# properties

  Hey there, i bumped the other day into a little problem regarding C#'s properties. Let's say i do have this setup: public class Point { public float X; public float Y; } public class Control { protected Point m_Position = new Point(); public Position { get { return m_Position; } set { m_Position = value; } // reorganize internal structure.. reorganize(); } protected reorganize() { // do some stuff } } This is all fine, but when it comes to usage, i could write something like: Control myControl = new Control(); myControl.Position.X = 1.0f; The thing is, my Control class wont recognize that the Position has been changed because set hasn't been called. • Test for undefined references in Linux

  Is there a built in linux utility that I can use to test a newly compiled shared library for external undefined references? Gcc seems to be intelligent enough to check for undefined symbols in my own binary, but if the symbol is a reference to another library gcc does not check at link time. Instead I only get the message when I try to link to my new library from another program. It seems a little silly to get undefined reference messages in a library when I am compiling a different project so I want to know if I can do a check on all references internal and external when I build the library not when I link to it. • MonoRail - Clearing value on edit form submission doesn't trigger validation

  Hey, In a MonoRail app I have an add/edit view. On add if I don't pick a value for a dropdown I get a validation error and am forced to pick a value. However, if I then edit that same item and reset the dropdown back to the first item ("Select an Item", "0"), it saves and doesn't say it was invalid. Debugging the entity sent back to the server, I can see that it's sending the original value for the dropdown instead of the new value of "0". What's going on here? The first thing I would expect is that it would trigger the validation since the dropdown value isn't set. The second thing I would expect is that it would send the new value I send, not the original. It does send the new value if I change it to another value, but it's as if it has internal logic that says - "I'm updating this entity and a new value was not passed, just don't change the entity value."   I'm looking for simple ways to monitor and limit the number of instances of our application under Terminal Server (2003 and 2008). The purpose of this restriction is to make sure we don't overload our servers. This is an internal administrative requirement - I am not looking for a licensing solution. The application in question is written in Python 2.6 (32-bit) but I'm happy to receive development tool agnostic answers. • Showing ImageView next to TextView in a ListView

  So I have a listview that is displaying correctly. When the item is "turned on" the text is white and when it's turned off it's grey. That part all functions great. However when I add the ImageView into the mix I get a null pointer exception. I don't understand why. I've tried using bitmaps as well and get the same problem. • exposing subcontrols from the custom widget plugin in QT

  I am using QT 4.3. I have created one custom widget plugin. I could be able to show it in the desiner tool box as well as use it on the form with no problem. This custom widget internally holds QGroupBox, QLabel, QTextEdit. Now I want to apply the styles to individual componets of this custom widget. I want to expose these internal conrols as sub-control and style them. This would be similar to tear subcontrol of QTabWidget. In style sheet we can refer it as QTabWidget::tear... Is there any way by which I can do similar thing with my custom widget?

My question is, how can I make Subversion use the linux system accounts for authentication? This would lead to very easy Subversion account management. Subversion with Apache/WebDAV is currently working with this configuration: Contents of /etc/apache2/mods-available/dav_svn.conf: <Location /svn> DAV svn SVNParentPath /home/svn SVNListParentPath On AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion Repository" AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd Require valid-user </Location> I have tried changing AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd with AuthUserFile /etc/shadow with no success. This makes the server to respond with a error 500 internal server error. It's logical, why the Web service should have access to system authentication file? Thanks a lot in advance!
