• Default file permissions for php user www-data

  I have a php installed on my ubuntu machine. The web root is /var/www I set the permissions for this folder like so: sudo chown -R ftpuser:www-data /var/www ftpuser is the user I set up so I can ftp to /var/www from another machine on the network. www-data is the user php uses. I double checked using whoami from php. Whenever I ftp upload a new file to the machine the group has no permissions to the file. So when I try to access it in my browser via machine-name/new-file.php I am told permission denied and I have to go and chmod the new file. I am wondering if there is a way I can default the www-data user/group to have access permissions to new files so I don't have to keep chmod every new file?

• How to boot load the kernel using EFI stub (efistub) loader?

  I have Ubuntu 14.04 running in UEFI mode as only operating system, no dual-boot here. The kernel version is 3.13.0-24-generic. There is an EFI partition. In this case the EFI partition is not at the default /dev/sda1 but at /dev/sda3 because I did actually convert BIOS mode to EFI mode. I have used the grub-efi-amd64 package, though that actually loads GRUB boot menu from UEFI firmware boot menu (UEFI boot loads \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi). I want to skip that double boot menu loading step, and boot faster, directly from UEFI into the kernel. The Ubuntu kernels since 12.10 have "Kernel EFI stub loader" feature. I know I do need to copy the Ubuntu kernel to the EFI partition (possibly rename) and create an entry in UEFI boot menu (for instance using efibootmgr). Which exact terminal commands are necessary to do this?

  I have some code which takes a few minutes to process, it has to connect to the web for each string in a long array, each string is a url. • View Animation (Resizing a Ball)

  hi, i am trying to do this: 1) user long touches the screen, 2) a circle/ball pops up (centered around the user's finger) and grows in size as long as the user is touching the screen 3) once the user lets go of the finger, the ball (now in its final size) will bounce around. i think i have the bouncing around figure out from the DivideAndConquer example, but i am not sure how to animate the ball's growth. i looked at various view flipper examples such as this: http://www.inter-fuser.com/2009/08/android-animations-3d-flip.html but it seems like view flipper is best for swapping two static pictures. i wasn't able to find a good view animator example other than the flippers. also, i would prefer to use images as opposed to just a circle. can someone point me in the right direction? thanks.

• Why can I only put some items in the launcher?

  Whenever I search for an item using dash it knows the default way of opening it. However if I drag a file into the launcher it can't be added, even if it is executable. For example if you would like minecraft to show up you will have to add a custom launcher, or if you use dash to find a pdf file, you can double click it and it opens evince however you cannot drag it into the launcher. The animation surrounding this behavior suggests that this was done by design. Why is this useful or necessary? Is it a bug?

• Generating Component SEF URLs in Joomla

  I have a custom Joomla component and a router for building my SEF URL's for use within the site, and everything is usually shiny - internally, all of my links look and act fantastic. I recently route a controller action that sends a list of links through email, and I've noticed that my URLs are coming out.... funky - hopefully someone can tell me why. Usually, my router generates an internal link that looks like this: http://localhost/Registry/calendar/265889635/Some-Long-Boring-Event However, when I send an email and preparing the same URL through the same router I get: http://localhost/Registry/Registry/component/calendar/569555803/Some-Long-Boring-Event Has anybody run into this issue before?

• LibreOffice: Open in current program by default?

  I often need to open pipe delimited .txt files in LibreOffice Calc. However, once I have Calc running, if I do File Open and select a spreadsheet with the extension .txt, it opens it in Writer instead. Is there a way to tell the file I'm trying to open using whatever program instead of trying to pick which one to use? Barring that, is there a way I tell it to always use Calc for .txt files (when I open them from the open dialog in Calc)? I still want them to open in GEdit like they currently do if I double click them from Thunar.

• Is it possible to avoid downloading song up to the supplied position using SoundManager2?

  I'm using the SoundManager2 JavaScript SDK on a site that streams synchronized audio from SoundCloud to multiple clients simultaneously. When a new user loads the page, the audio is loaded, and a position parameter is set to specify where playback should begin. The problem arises when the track is really long (say 60 minutes), and the current track position is substantially far into the track (e.g. 30 minutes). When this is the case, it takes a really long time before playback begins because the track has to download/buffer up to the current position. Is there a way to avoid downloading the 30 minutes of audio that I don't need?

  I need a list of all the countries in the world, with one lat/long coordinate for the country. I had a look at GeoNames, but all I can seem to find are lists that have the countries as well as cities in the same list. I guess I can just parse it and filter out the countries, but I was hoping to avoid that. Basically, what I need; Country name - Lat/long coordinate (some sort of center of the country) It doesn't need to say anything about continent, but I wouldn't mind if it did. _L

• Wireless internet sharing stops working after client disconnects

  I'm running Unbuntu 11.10 with the latest service packs, sharing an ether connection over wireless. Everything works fine, up to the point that the client (a laptop) sleeps or otherwise disconnects. The wireless connection at that point no longer functions, not showing up when searching for the hotspot with the laptop. The only way to recover is to reboot the machine, or toggle the wireless share off/on. I've double checked the wireless card has power management off. Currently what I'm doing is keeping an Ipod plugged into the box 24/7 to keep the wireless connection up when the laptop disconnects. I've searched the internet far and wide, found many issues with wireless problems after an ubuntu box itself sleeps, but nothing directly related to my problem. Hoping someone has some idea of where to look and what to check. A girl needs her Ipod back!

  I have a RichTextBox that I write a string to every time I click a Form button. The string ends with a newline so each time I add a string, it appends to the bottom of the RichTextBox. Each string begins with the string "Long" or "Short" and ends with Environment.NewLine. I'd like to color each line red if it beings with "Long" and blue if it begins with "Short". How can I do this? • Parse and display MIME multipart email on website

  I have a raw email, (MIME multipart), and I want to display this on a website (e.g. in an iframe, with tabs for the HTML part and the plain text part, etc.). Are there any CPAN modules or Template::Toolkit plugins that I can use to help me achieve this? At the moment, it's looking like I'll have to parse the message with Email::MIME, then iterate over all the parts, and write a handler for all the different mime types. It's a long shot, but I'm wondering if anyone has done all this already? It's going to be a long and error prone process writing handlers if I attempt it myself. Thanks for any help.

• Unable to access jar. Why?

  I was making a game in java and exported it as jar file. Then after that, I opeed jar splice. I added the libaries and exported jar. I added the natives then i made a main class. I created a fat jar and put it on my desktop. I'm using Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. When I put in the terminal, java -jar System Front.jar it says unable to access System Front.jar Even if i double click on the file, it doesen't show up! Help! I'm using slick. I added slick and lwjgl as libraries for the jar splice at the jars.

• Can't log in on boot up

  I set this computer up with Ubuntu for my neighbor about two years ago. Today she tried her normal boot up and log in and her password isn't accepted. I've double checked and she's using what I set her up to use, the caps lock key is okay, and I can't see any other reason for the problem. I'm not sure exactly what version of Ubuntu she has and I'm not an expert user myself. Is there a way to bypass the password screen on boot up that would let me get to Ubuntu and perhaps set her up as another user? She basically checks email and that's about it.   I have to write a C# application that runs on WindowsME. Yes, I mean that Microsoft operating system that has been forgotten a long long time ago. My program needs no user interaction and as WindowsME doesn't support services, it will be a console application. Furthermore it will be used on more modern operating systems, where the user can choose whether to start it as console application or install it as a windows service. Now suppose the software is running on WinME and the user decides to logoff or shutdown the machine without a prior quit of my software. WinME complains about my program still running and asks if it should kill the process. Apart from the bad user experiance, this means that the application is not shut down properly. So I look for a way to be informed if the user logs off or wants to shutdown the machine to be able to perform a proper shutdown of my software first.

There is a url like this: www.example.com/subdirectory/page.php?var1=A&var2=B It's a long url, so I changed it like this: www.example.com/subdirectory/page/A/B as well as I config the .htaccess file: <Files page> ForceType application/x-httpd-php </Files> However, I assume it's also quite long. If the "page.php" change to "index.php", the "page" seems to disappear, just like this: www.example.com/subdirectory/A/B But I don't know how to achieve. Is omitted 'page' possible?   I have a function that writes 3 lines into a empty table like so: INSERT [dbo].[yaf_ForumAccess] ([GroupID], [ForumID], [AccessMaskID]) VALUES (1, 8, 1) INSERT [dbo].[yaf_ForumAccess] ([GroupID], [ForumID], [AccessMaskID]) VALUES (2, 8, 4) INSERT [dbo].[yaf_ForumAccess] ([GroupID], [ForumID], [AccessMaskID]) VALUES (3, 8, 3) For some reason only the third query takes a long time to execute - and with each insert it grows longer. Profiler Image I have tried disabling all constraints on the table - same result. I just can't figure out why the first two would run so fast - and the last one would take so long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
