• New Job Over Budget

  I recently started a new job as a contract developer, and my non-developer boss of about two weeks ago gave me the task to re-create an app from another language and developer that he will reuse with multiple clients (replacing the front-end), that I estimated would take longer than his estimate of 12 hours. Two weeks later, I'm 230% over-budget. I admit this was my 2nd web app, I had been a wordpress developer in the past, so I am somewhat new to code igniter, but not shabby php by any means. My boss hired me knowing this and I was clear that it would take longer than his 12 hours. He's seen me in the office on task for 2 weeks, he should be somewhat prepared for this bill. Do I expect the full amount of hours, or do I filter against how much of learned? Can I bill for research as a developer?

  Hi I have a eeepc 1000h netbook. I've just installed ubuntu. I mainly use an external display (samsung ta350 full hd 22 inch affair) but when I select 1080 from the dropdown list, my only options are for a rotated portrait. My neck's non too supple, so tilting my head for extended periods is not really viable. :-) Any ideas on making ubuntu display 1080 normal landscape? It must surely be possible. My gparted boot cd does it perfectly. Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers!

  Everything I've read about Hadoop seems like exactly the technology we need to make our enterprise more scalable. We have terabytes of raw data that is in non-relational form (text files of some kind). We're quickly approaching the upper limits of what our centralized file server can handle and everyone is aware of this. Most people on the tech team, especially the more junior members of the tech team are all in favor of moving from the central file system to HDFS. The problem is, there is one key (most senior, etc.) member of the team who is resisting this change and every time Hadoop comes up, he tells us that we could simply add another file server and be in the clear. So, my question (and yes, it's really subjective, but I need more help with this than any of my other questions) is what steps can we take to get upper management to move forward with Hadoop despite the hesitation of one member of the team?

• Why won't USB 3.0 external hard drive run at USB 3.0 speeds?

  I recently purchased a PCI Express x1 USB 3.0 controller card (containing the NEC USB 3.0 controller) with the intent of using a USB 3.0 external hard drive with my Linux box. I installed the card in an empty PCIe slot on my motherboard, connected the card to a power cable, strung a USB 3.0 cable between one of the new ports and my external HDD, and connected the HDD to a wall socket for power. Booting the system, the drive works 100% as intended, with the one exception of throughput: rather than using SuperSpeed 4.8 Gbps connectivity, it seems to be falling back to High Speed 480 Mbps USB 2.0-style throughput. Disk Utility shows it as a 480 Mbps device, and running a couple Disk Utility and dd benchmarks confirms that the drive fails to exceed ~40 MB/s (the approximate limit of USB 2.0), despite it being an SSD capable of far more than that. Consequently, I installed the 2.6.37-generic mainline Ubuntu kernel to determine if the problem would go away. It didn't, so I tried 2.6.38-rc3-generic, and even the 2.6.38 nightly from 2010.02.01, to no avail. In short, I'm trying to determine why, with USB 3.0 support in the kernel, my USB 3.0 drive fails to run at full SuperSpeed throughput. See the comments under this question for additional details. • How to install again Update Manager after uninstalling it

  Ok, the thing is this I tried asking many times on few ubuntu forums how to deal with my non-responsive Update Manager, but all I was getting was the same stuff (run it from the terminal, run some lines, apt-get update blah blah). Nothing was helping. Eventually I went mad Windows style and tried to simply uninstall it and install it again. The problem is - how to install it again? Can't do it through Software Center, can't really build a package (because I'm too stupid to do that). And I seriously want to avoid reinstalling the whole system. I am running a 12.04 verison (Update Manager was unable to update to a newer one) Please help. I am furious with this thing.

  The germ for this question came up from a discussion I was having with couple of fellow developers from the industry. Turns out that in a lot of places project managers are wary about complex data structures, and generally insist on whatever exists out-of-the-box from standard library/packages. The general idea seems to be like use a combination of whats already available unless performance is seriously impeded. This helps keeping the code base simple, which to the non-diplomatic would mean "we have high attrition, and newer ones we hire may not be that good". So no bloom filter or skip-lists or splay trees for you CS junkies. So here's the question (again): Whats the most complicated data structure you did or used in office? Helps get a sense of how good/sophisticated real world software are.

  When posting my resume, I get hounded by recruiters who try to sell me on a job. Why don't the actual company HR employees contact me directly? My information is available for them to find. Wouldn't they save money by bypassing the recruiter fees? Out of the hundreds of recruiter phone calls, only 2 actual companies contacted me directly (and 2-3 other non-company individuals). Should the HR employees be let go if they are so irrelevant? (The careers exchange doesn't allow posting questions.)

  Public inheritance means that all fields from the base class retain their declared visibility, while private means that they are forced to 'private' within the derived class's scope. What should be done if some of the parent's members (say, methods) need to be publicly exposed? I can think of two solution. Public inheritance somewhat breaks encapsulation. Furthermore, when you need to find out where is the method foo() defined, one needs to look at a chain of base classes. Private inheritance solves these problems, but introduces burden to write wrappers (more text). Which might be a good thing in the line of verbosity, but makes changes of interfaces incredibly cumbersome. What considerations am I missing? What constraints on the type of project are important? How to choose between the two (I am not even mentioning 'protected')? Note that I am targeting non-virtual methods. There isn't such a discussion for virtual methods (or is there).

  When I start sqlplus, more often than not, I want it to start in new window,whether it be on Linux/Solaris GNOME or Windows.I seldom use GNOME so I never bothered to figure out how.On Windows, one can use Windows menu or Win+R "Run" dialog but I prefer usingbash. Because, this way, I can keep the history in ~/.bash_history file.There are 2 ways. • Skype 4.2 crashes and bugs on 13.10

  I've installed Skype and it appears to work fine right up until the point where I try to call someone. If I try to video call someone then the programme freezes and I have to force quit. I've tried several 'solutions' I've found on various forums but none seem to work. Now, when I try to call the Echo service as a test to see if the bug's fixed, it seems to connect and start the non-video call, except that it's completely silent. No audio at all. Any help? It seems to be 2 separate issues: audio and generic crashing. Anyone come across these and found solutions?

  I have a game written in XNA, and I use ClickOnce installers to distribute the game to testers. I keep once computer as a test machine which does NOT have development environments installed, so that I can test the installed version. We've found a reproducible bug in our game, but the bug ONLY occurs on the non-development machines that use the ClickOnce installer. The bug is related to some of our code for moving around 3D objects and is not tied to Networking or GamerServices. Are there known differences in the ClickOnce runtime and the version on dev? Are there any best-practices for debugging something like this?

• Sharing a mounted Truecrypt volume via Samba

  Been banging my head against the wall on this one for a while. I have an encrypted (via truecrypt) partition on a drive. In windows, I mount it locally and share it on my local network. I'm trying to do the same in Ubuntu 10.10 but am running into permission issues. The tc volume has funny permissions and I just can't seem to figure out a way to access it (unsecurely of course) over my network. Other non-tc volume shares work just fine. To recap, I mount a truecrypt volume in Ubuntu and set up a samba share as normal. The share shows up on my local network but accessing it gives 'permission denied'. Mounting as a network drive using a password does not seem to work either. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  The situation is that a client requested a number of changes about 9 months ago which they then put on hold with them half done. They've now requested more changes without having made up their mind to proceed with the first set of changes. The two sets of changes will require alterations to the same code modules. I've been tasked with explaining why them not making a decision about the first set of changes (either finish them or bin them) may incur additional costs (essentially because the changes would need to be made to a branch then if they proceed with the first set of changes we'd have to merge them to the trunk - which will be messy - and retest them). The question I have is this: How best to explain branching of code to a non-technical client?

My question on this post is more about the "significantLinks" property and how it effects SEO for on page, in content anchored text. Does anyone have any more information regarding whether its good to use for link optimization? I understand what schema.org means that it's to be used on "non-navigational links" and those links should be relevant to the current page's meaning. But will using this property hurt SEO or make SEO better for each page?   I have an open source project that is a add-in to TFS (ie it is for developers and those using TFS.) It is currently using the GPL. But it occurs to me that the GPL does not really represent what I am trying to do with my license. I want my code to be free to everyone who wants to use it. And if you modify it and use it then that is great too. You should not have to open source your modifications. But I would like to block someone from building my code and selling it. Or modifying it and selling it. (Anyone that wants to do that should have to negotiate a separate license with me.) Is there an open source license that prevents re-selling, but allows full non-vending use for a person/company that downloads it?

  I want to put a .bashrc file in a directory where my application is located, to set up path variables accordingly independent of the location of the directory at the moment. At the same time, I want to be able to run the application right away, without having to source a shell file to set the path every time. Therefore I figured I could use .bashrc which is executed when the non-login terminal is started. If I do put it in the proper .bashrc in the home directory, I would have to give an absolute path which I want to avoid. Is there a way to have something like .bashrc but not in home directory (ie a shell that is executed when terminal is started?)

  There has been a lot of media attention paid in recent months and years to the increase in CS majors and the possibility of a second tech bubble. Some news reports have suggested that as more people enter CS, the market could be flooded with CS professionals and jobs could be increasingly difficult to find. Is this a bad time to be majoring in computer science? Edit: I'm a non-trad student who allready has a Bachelor's degree in economics and will be pursuing a CS degree starting this upcoming summer semester at the Univ of Kansas. I've been programming for about two/three years and just need a more formal education to fill the holes in my head. I have an interest in CS, it's just that I am worries about the prospects for the future.

  Iam a total newbie to Ubuntu . I installed Cinnamon through terminal . The problem is that when i boot up, if i don't enter the password before 1 or 2 minutes the password field will freeze and won't accept any text inputs.The problem was most likely caused by Cinnamon because i guess the problem started after i tried to install some Cinnamon extensions. • Is there any way to get faster app reviews?

  I am trying to build a business around an iPhone app. The app will be our main sales channel, and being able to adapt the sales channel faster than the 9-10 days delay cause by the app review times is crucial. Therefore, I was wondering whether there is anything I can do to improve the speed of reviews. I am thinking that the publishers of Angry Birds, surely would not have to wait in line for reviews on the same terms as some obscure free app. So what can I do? Some things I am considering: Would Apple prioritize apps that they earn money on? Could I in some way pay Apple directly? I already know of the possibility of requesting an expedite review, but it seems like one can get punished for supplying a non-technical reason.
