• Reading the registry of a (windows computer) from a web app (silverlight? php? etc)

  Is there a way to read the windows registry from a web based application with no user interaction? im open to language suggestions, any language will work i just need to know how to pull a certain string from one particular registry key. EDIT: incase this wasnt clear, im operating inside of a web-browser, obviously.. its a web application, weather it be silverlight, java, php, or something else.

• Windows 7 - Virtualbox host only adapter doesn't get an IP

  When I create a new host only network adapter, it will not set the IP address I assign to it. After I save the IP address & netmask it looks like it works (I see the Windows 7 User Account Control verification box), but the IP address doesn't get stored on the adapter. I have tried adding/removing the adapter from within virtualbox and settings the values manually in the Windows aapter settings dialogue. I am using a Windows 7 host. Does anyone know why the settings don't get saved, or how to get more information? • What are the benefits of using conforming certificates?

  Recently, my web host started sending my mail client a self-signed root certificate with no field filled (everything says "Unknown") when connecting via SSL. I'm pretty sure this is not a good thing, but since it works, the tech support guy says it's fine. I'm not a certificate guru, so I'm turning to you people. What purpose do certificates serve? Is it really okay that the certificate has every field set to "Unknown"? I don't check certificates often, but I don't recall ever being sent a root one; what's the difference between a root certificate and, err, the other kind of certificate?

  testing ssl cert on server using a web service. https, imaps and pop3s all check, but smtps yields the message "we advise you not to submit any confidential or personal data to this website because a secure connection could not be established with this website." running postfix tls logging: connect from s097.networking4all.com[213.249.64.242] lost connection after UNKNOWN from s097.networking4all.com[213.249.64.242] disconnect from s097.networking4all.com[213.249.64.242] these work correctly: telnet mydomain.net 587 openssl s_client -starttls smtp -crlf -connect mydomain.net:587 but cannot get email using ssl to log into either 587 or 564 - get same "UNKNOWN" problem. email smtp w/o ssh works fine. the test site is http://www.networking4all.com/en/support/tools/site+check/

• Windows 7 connect to Lion file sharing

  Trying to access my Mac from a Windows 7 computer, I fail with the infamous error 86 incorrect password. Now this appears to be a well-known problem with countless threads on the internet giving as many "solutions" as there are discussion threads about it (mostly ranging from installing third-party commercial samba servers, to switching to some other protocol, to compiling a plain-vanilla Samba installation - the latter which I will probably do when I give up this :) ) I am stubborn, and I believe there must be some problem here that can be solved or worked around, but there is surprisingly little detail about this problem. It appears to have something to do with a mismatch of authentication methods. • How is DNS used by individual processes?

  When resolving FQDNs or machine names to IP addresses on my local network (mycompany.internal) I can use dig on the command line (linux/mac) or nslookup (windows) to query the configured server and get a response. But trying to enter the FQDN or even just the machine name in a ping command or in a web browser results in 'Unknown Host' or DNS errors. The DNS server is a SBS 2003 box which handles AD, some file/print, etc for a small company network. This issue happens to me about three times a week, and when I'm connected to the local network directly, the same switch as the server even. I can make any connection I want with IP addresses, I just can't make DNS work. Additionally, at the same time I'm experiencing this, other users are fine, which makes me think it's a problem on my Mac. But what sort of problem? How can dig send a query and get a reply, and ping say 'unknown host'? I'm posting here vs. serverfault because I think this is a local problem not a server problem...but if anyone can point me at the server, I guess we'll head down the street a domain or two.

• Server 2008/Windows 7/Samba Unspecified error 80004005

  I have a Samba share on a LAN with 2008 PDC/DNS. Smb authenticates with AD and I have several Win7 Machines that can connect fine. I recently added a couple of new computers to the LAN which were imaged the same way (same software, etc.; different hardware so different drivers) as the other machines and they have the same policies set. I can not get the new machines to connect to the samba share no matter what. I am always met with either Unspecified Error 0x80004005 or Network Path not found. I've turned off the firewall; set LANMAN auth to respond to NTLM only/send LM & NTLM responses/use NTLM session security if negotiated in Local Sec Policy SEcurity Options; tried both ip and hostname to connect. • Why is group write permission ignored in Ubuntu?

  I want my user to have full access to the local Apache root folder, and I also want the Apache user to have full access to the same folder. What I did was create a new group called DevGroup and I added my user and www-data there. Also I changed the permissions to 770 to allow full group access. But now it won't allow me or the Apache user any kind of access to the folder.
