• Is it possible to change "working directory" of XeTeX?

  Using XeTeX there are many working files that get created in process of producing the pdf, and they litter the directory where my main .tex file is. Is it possible to change the working directory of XeTeX so that it stores all these scratch files in some other directory, out of the way? There is a previous question on Superuser.com that discusses a utility that cleans up the working files by deleting them after they're produced: http://superuser.com/questions/95712/how-to-avoid-littering-ones-tex-directories-with-intermediate-files That solution doesn't work for me since I'm using XeTeX, but also it seems like it would be preferable to simply be able to designate a "scratch" directory where all working files are saved. I haven't been able to find any info on how to do it though. Is there a way? (My question is prompted partly because of the fact that I often work with files in a directory that is shared using DropBox, so it creates a lot of unnecessary traffic if files are getting created and destroyed willy nilly. I don't know if it affects speed in any way, but the idea of having a separate working directory that is not shared/replicated by DropBox would be a cleaner solution, even if I could use the method suggested in the earlier thread.)

• What is the sysadmin's dream network printer? 6-8k pg/mo. Xerox, OkiData, Lexmark and HP are all fail

  How do I find out what printer brand and/or type doesn't suck? This information is hard to find and manufacturer's websites won't reveal any issues with certain printers. After 10 years of dealing with network shared printers, I can't say that I have been impressed with any of the printer brands I've seen. Brother's little laser MFPs have been close to ideal for low volume, but that is it, period. OkiData, Lexmark, HP, Xerox solid ink printers, they all sucked in one way or another. Currently I'm looking to replace a Xerox ColorQube 8570 because it fails to print on a regular basis. Sometimes it doesn't even boot VxWorks fully - it just hangs at 2% or whatever. I've used Xerox 8860MFPs and they sucked just as bad. I won't talk about ink jets here, that's most likely not what I'm looking for. We currently spend about $4k on paper and ink per year for this printer at up to 6-8k pages per month, letter, mostly black and white, low color usage. I want the printer to feed paper correctly, not crash and burn when a PDF isn't according to its taste (my favorite Xerox problem here) and with decent drivers for Windows and OS X. Print quality is not of the utmost importance but paper does get sent to customers.

• Disable CTRL+mouse wheel zooming in Chrome?

  I'm a normal-sighted person and I would like to view pages at 100% all the time. I use keyboard shortcuts that involve CTRL a lot, so about twenty times a day I accidentally hit CTRL at the same time that I'm scrolling, which results in the page being reflowed and repainted. This in is annoying because it can take up to 30 seconds to fix the issue, depending on how complex the site layout is. On sites with dynamic layout such as Google Docs the problem is more serious; accidentally hitting CTRL+mouse wheel corrupts the display and forces me to refresh the page entirely, sometimes causing me to loose information in the process. I would like to either decouple CTRL+mouse wheel from zoom, or disable zoom functionality altogether. This is possible on Firefox by using about:config; is there a similar way to edit detailed settings in Chrome? Would I have access to the detailed settings if I used Chromium instead of Chrome? I'll probably jump ship back to Firefox if I can't solve this problem. There is a superuser question that asks basically the same thing I'm asking, but for Firefox and Internet Explorer exclusively. Other people on the Chrome forum have had related issues, but none have the same problem. "I would really like it if I could deactivate the auto zoom in/out." had "something with laptops and Windows 7", not the feature built into Chrome. Other people have had PDF specific issues, which doesn't concern me. I've also tried searching for extensions that allow you to disable the scroll; I had hoped that "Zoom Lock" would have the ability to lock the zoom at 100% and prevent CTRL+scroll wheel from distorting the display, but it doesn't work for my use case. • Dell Driver Support for Latitude E6320 Windows 7 Enterprise

  I recently did a reinstall of Windows 7 Enterprise on a Dell Latitude E6320, which is a 64 bit system. After the install process, and doing typical Windows Update stuff, I looked at my Device Manager and found that I had devices which were missing drivers. My missing drivers: After going to the Dell Support site and looking at the files, and doing some sleuthing I found the following support document: http://downloads.dell.com/utility/Latitude%20E-Family%20%20Mobile%20Precision%20Re-Image%20How-To%20Guide%20-%20A03%20Rev%203%200.pdf This document hints in appendix C that the Broadcom USH is the Control Point Security and the Unknown device is Micro freefall sensor. The network controller is my wireless, as I cannot connect wirelessly, and the final missing driver I am not sure. Attempting to install the control point security exe on the support page will not work. After downloading, I am given the message that I am attempting to install a 32 bit driver on a 64 bit machine EVEN THOUGH I selected the win7 64 bit option from the support page. Beyond that, some of the drivers (Which are confusing to read and hard to understand what they do) and the system utilities which are supposedly supposed to make this process simpler will either a) not run because they are 32 bit exe's or b) the support page cannot find the file attempted to download. Is there anything I can do to get (at the very least) my wireless running, but idealistically all of my drivers. A solution which assumes Dell is completely incompetent would be ideal. :P Some forums have said that I should download the chipset driver, others say to get the system utility file (DSS_UTIL_WIN_R282536.EXE). I have had no luck as of yet...

• SharePoint, Exchange and Incoming Emails Without Directory Management Services

  Trying to keep this as simple as possible. We've already created the email accounts that we need (e.g. account[1-20]@domain.com) on Exchange/AD. We'd like to now enable incoming emails on SharePoint 2007 lists corresponding to these accounts. My thinking is we don’t need to configure Directory Management Services [2] – the architecture will be simpler without it and the application doesn’t require these services. However, we still need to route messages from Exchange to either local SMTP services (via the connector described in the articles below) or by user-specific drop-folder settings (if permitted by Exchange). So the question is: can we instruct Exchange to use a drop folder just for accounts account[1-20]@domain.com? or do we need to change the accounts to account[1-20]@sharepointsmtp.domain.com and re-route those message to the local SMTP service that will drop them on disk? • CUPS printer on Vritual Machine can be access via CUPS admin, but not by XP?

  I have a Zebra label printer connected to a Linux Mint virtual machine. It was set up with CUPS and a Windows XP computer can then print to it via http://192.168.1.76:632/printers/labelprinter. That was all fine and dandy I then hooked up a Fargo Pro L PVC card printer to a Windows XP virtual machine. I had to disconnect the label printer as the server that hosted both virtual machines only has 1 parallel port. Now I plugged in the Zebra again, and it cannot print from the Windows XP computer anymore. If I go to the CUPS admin panel on the Windows XP computer, I can see it, everything looks fine, and I can send it a test page to print which works. If I try to print from Windows, I get an error that the printer is not found/cannot connect to the server. The only other thing that changed was the firewall on the router to allow remote desktop to another computer from outside the network, but all the firewall stuff was for external use. Nothing affected the IP address of the internal network. The Linux Mint VM also had a PDF pritner that was shared with CUPS. That printer is also down. I tried setting up a new CUPS installation on another VM, and when I go to share it with XP, I get the same error. I don't know what to try. It has access, it can get to the admin from that computer, it seems to be up and ready, but when Windows tries to connect, the printer isn't found even though 4 days ago everything was fine. Any ideas?

• nginx - proxy_pass is working - Apache isn't doing what it should...

Otherwise, it should pass it off to Apache. Right now, static files are working correctly. However, if something is passed to apache and it's example.com or subdomain.example.com, apache just spits out the "Apache 2 Test Page" that you get if there's nothing there. Apache worked fine before, so I'm guessing it has to do with the way nginx is "asking". I'm not sure though. Any ideas?

• Formula-based Excel page headers

  I'm using the "Rows to repeat at top" function in Excel's "Page Setup" dialog to ensure that a multi-row header block appears on every printed page of my worksheet. However, I'd like to be able to change certain bits of the header based on the content of the current page. I would simply like to display the value of one cell in the first row that is printed on the page. If this is my header: Section: xx And the data looks like this (columns are Section and Name): 1 Foo 1 Bar 2 Baz I want the "xx" in the header to be "1". If, further down on the next page, the value in the Section column is "3", I want that printed in the header of the next page. I originally thought that using the "OFFSET" function might help, e.g. ="Section: "&OFFSET(A2, 1, 0) But it only shows the offset from the original placement of the header, thus only working on page 1. The end document is a PDF, so right now I'm able to go back in with the "TouchUp Text Tool" in Acrobat and add the numbers page by page. But it gets to be a tedious process with 70+ page reports. Anyone have any better ideas that don't require me mucking up the original Excel document with inserted headers every N lines? This is Excel 2008 for Mac, if it makes a difference.

• Outlook 2007 + Exchange 2010 (Save All Attachments)

  About 3 weeks back our company upgraded our mail system to Exchange 2010, all went smooth, few issues but nothing major. A few days ago we had a call from a colleague where he was unable to save all attachments, From File > Save As > Save All Attachments. When the email has a single attachment it works perfectly normal, and depending on the file type it allows you to save multiple attachments. But there's a lot of file types that will not work, such as zip, pdf, doc etc, Usually we get a location box open up asking where we would like to drop the attachments, but it does nothing, You click Save All Attachments and nothing happens. After hours of research I have come across mixed results, a lot of people on forums have been explaining that they have recently crossed over to Exchange 2010 and there issues started there. But on the other hand Microsoft released a KB (278188) which was depressing if that, but that article was published in 2007, as stated by the time stamp, and Exchange 2010 has only come out recently. Im looking to see if you guys have any clues what could be causing this, anything server side that I can take a look at (AD, Exchange, ...). Any help on this is greatly supported

  I have been looking for a solution to virtualize my desktop application as a SaaS. After picking Citrix XenApp as the best solution for my case and trying for ever to get it to work (with some more experienced people) I can't help but to conclude that Citrix has too much problems for my case. Every time I fix one thing some other thing pops up. As I can't imagine Citrix XenApp is the only way to deliver my application to my clients, I'd like to ask you experienced guys if you think there is an other way to deliver it whilst meeting my requirements. I've got no money issues - time on the other hand... My requirements: My application must run on a windows server; The application should be virtualized with the application window only (no desktop); Content Redirection (my application is the only one virtualized, so PDF, DOC(X) etc. is on the users' system); Easy user management; SSO;* Cross platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OSX).* I truly hope I don't annoy you with another of the same question. • Linux Cups raspberry pi offload processing to server

  I am interested in setting up a raspberry pi as the local end of a printing solution. In my testing the pi chokes on acting as a complete cups based print server. It seems a little underpowered for some of the ghostscipt processing and other filtering that occurs-- particularly on larger or complex documents the processing time can be 5 or more minutes. My question is can the processing be largely done elsewhere and the prepared end product of the processing chain be fed to the pi for output on the connected printer? So in this scenario any arbitrary document (html, pdf, text) is initially 'printed' on a relatively powerful machine but the output is stored in a file. This file is then grabbed by the pi and with all the heavy work out of the way easily printed using cups. I know files can be pushed through cups in raw mode but I am fuzzy on the pros and cons and the applicability in what I describe. I have tested this with pdftops creating a ps file then feeding that raw to cups and I think it works but it seems like there may be a cleaner solution. This scenario would ideally work for any number of printer types.

• Print over remote CUPS server, but just show a subset of the printers.

  I'd like to print from my Ubuntu laptop (karmic) to some networked printers. Our organisation uses a CUPS server with several hundred printers. What I know I can do is: CUPS_SERVER=printers.company.com acroread document.pdf and then Adobe Reader shows me all available printers to select from. However, it takes a couple of minutes to display the large list, which is really annoying. (The desktop PCs here suffer from this, too.) The other option is to add a new printer with an address like ipp://printers.company.com/printer/bldg1_hp8150 (to the Ubuntu printer configuration = local CUPS server). However, it asks me for a driver. I don't want to / can't always specify a driver, since some printers don't appear in the list. I'd like to let the remote CUPS server handle the driver part (like it does when i set CUPS_SERVER), and do no more preprocessing/"driver stuff" on my side. The ideal thing would be if I could somehow add the remote printer list to my local cups server, and apply a filter, so that it would just display printers a la bldg1_*. This feature was available in KDE3.?, but I can't find something similar in Ubuntu/Gnome. Any suggestions?

• nginx giving 404 when accessing php from alias directory

  I am trying to migrate from apache to nginx. The php sites that I am hosting need to access a shared library which turns out to be an alias directory. Below is the configuration I came up with. html files work fine, but php files giving 404. I have read through and tried most (if not all) of the answers to the similar questions with no any success. • LighTPD and PHP not working if outside of LightTPD folder

  I need to set up a simple web server with PHP on Windows XP that a number of different people will use for local testing. I'm using LightTPD 1.4.30-4-IPv6-Win32-SSL and PHP 5.2. So far I've created this folder structure: tools/ LightTPD/ htdocs/ PHP/ I set up PHP as CGI and the document root as server_root + "/htdocs". It works fine (well, it's slow but I don't want to bother with FastCGI for now :) ). My problem is when I try to put the htdocs outside of LightTPD folder, like this: htdocs/ tools/ LightTPD/ PHP/ I update the document root to server_root + "/../../htdocs" and while static HTML pages work fine, PHP pages stop working (they return a "No input file specified"). I literally just change the document root, I didn't change anything in the php.ini or anywhere else. Please also note that I left all doc_root, user_dir and cgi.force_redirect to the default values in php.ini, and it works when htdocs is inside LightTPD, but not when I move it ouside. Any idea of why it's breaking?? • Manual Http error response code in non-existent folder via routing

  Apache server running on ubuntu-like linux I am getting unexpected behaviour when i try to manually send error response. If my .htaccess is responsible for the error response , then appropriate error document is loaded and displayed , with according response code in browser console. However , if my router is origin of the response code , then i get blank screen , but correct response code. .htaccess looks like this RewriteEngine On # RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule !\.(css|js|icon|zip|rar|png|jpg|gif|pdf)$ index.php [L] ErrorDocument 404 /err/404.html ErrorDocument 403 /err/403.html ErrorDocument 500 /err/500.html part of my router that sends the response is the following header("HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden"); trying this format didnt help either header("HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden", TRUE, 403); I also tried HTTP/1.0. Furthermore i was thinking that maybe relative path to error page might be an issue , but discarded this idea after attempting to access a document that is forbidden via .htaccess EDIT I should also point out , this scenario happens when URL for not-existing article is requested. Is it possible that Server is looking for a .htaccess file in a folder based on URL ? Eg: domain/blog/non-existent , is server looking for blog folder ? I am specifically asking this because there is no blog folder

  I have just finished a large re-organization and update of our institutions web server(s). This server hosts 3 virtual hosts, 3-4 blogs, 2 wikis, some legacy static HTML pages, and many hosted documents (PDF, .jpg, .xls). I have organized the site into a structure of something like: /var/www/sites/vhost1, vhost2, vhost3 .../wordpress/blogX .../mediawiki/wikiX Data is in a seperate directory structure so I can run a cron task over it to make sure it is all writeable and such. I then symlink to these data directories for each application. /var/www/data/vhost1, vhost2, vhost3 .../wordpress/blogX/uploads .../mediawiki/wikiX/images All Apache configs are in /etc/httpd/conf.d/vhosts.d/vhost1,2,3.conf On top of this there is also a testing server which mirrors this setup. Once changes are fully tested, they are rsynced down to the live server. All the wordpress installs and mediawiki installs are straight form SVN and updates are done by switching branches or "svn up". So my question is how can I best document to share with a) co-workers, b) possible future replacement, c) myself 6 months from now. Obviously I can make a wiki page, excel document, whatever and fill it with text, but I am looking for a more visual representation that I can use to explain the architecture to less-technical people. Ideally it would be awesome if this visual representation could then be expanded to get more technical details.

• Windows 7: resizing the 'Save As' window

  I do not know whether my question is appropriate for this forum. Apologies if it is not. I am running Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 on a Dell Vostro 460 PC. I am downloading journal articles from the internet and saving them as *.pdf files. Somehow I unintentionally clicked a button that resulted in the 'Save as' window filling the entire screen of my computer, except for the toolbar at the very bottom. How can I resize the 'Save as' window so it only fills perhaps somewhere around 25% of the computer screen, or whatever the default size for that window is? I have searched the internet extensively and found one or two threads about this problem, but no specific solutions were posted there. One suggestion was to grab the bottom of the window with the mouse and scroll upward until the window was the desired size. That does not appear to be possible in my case. Another suggestion was to click on the window with the middle mouse button before attempting to resize the window, but that does not appear to help in my case either. Thank you for any help. If I should post this question in a different forum here please let me know, or kindly migrate the question to the appropriate forum. If additional information is necessary before a solution can be attempted, please let me know that as well.

• Why are my SharePoint downloads not completing for outside users?

  I am using WSS 3.0 with Microsoft Server 2003. I am running into the following problem. On a pretty frequent basis, outside users are having trouble downloading documents. Some downloads are completing while the download is still incomplete. So for instance, a PDF is a 17MB file. If I download it from within the office, all 17MBs are downloaded and it opens. If I download it from an outside connection, it may download anywhere from 5-10 MB of the file and then say it is complete. When these partial downloads are opened, it gives the user the error, this file is corrupt and cannot be repaired. I have solved this problem on some of the occasions by simply deleting the document and uploading a new copy of the document. This does not always work. Are there known bugs? Are the Internet settings that need to be modified on the outside user's machine? Does anyone else run into this?

There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain. A detailed WLST tutorial is beyond the scope of this post but you can find general information here. This innovative demonstration uses a case-study approach to show business users how they can easily streamline their Business Processes - delivering greater efficiency, agility, visibility and collaboration with Oracle BPM and WebCenter. The BDD demonstration uses a case study-based approach to highlight a business problem at a fictional company, Avitek Corporation, and uses Oracle BPM and Oracle WebCenter to solve the business problem. This holistic approach has specifically been used to appeal to a non-technical business analyst user. This demo is NOT focused on product features, but aims to guide users through a complete BPM lifecycle. The scenario is based on improving a simple order process (scenario details are in the demo script). Avitek Corporation is sufferinng from a manual email-driven ordering process. Sales reps don’t know where the customer orders are stuck (no visibility) and finance users are unable to manually approve every order (no automation). There are several areas where this process can be improved with Business Process Management technology. This demo shows how improving following areas will ignificantly help resolve the business problems Avitek Corporation is facing. Areas for improvement include: Utilizing BPM for process management, rather than an unregulated, email-based process. Utilizing automated services, rather than requiring a human to key into a system. For example, Finance checking the customer’s credit rating is something that could be automated. Centralizing business rules that can be integrated into a business process, rather than requiring a human to process them. For example, Finance must determine when orders can be automatically approved. Provide insight and visibility into the process. • Does my fat-client application belong in the MVC pattern?

  The web-based application I’m currently working on is growing arms and legs! It’s basically an administration system which helps users to keep track of bookings, user accounts, invoicing etc. It can also be accessed via a couple of different websites using a fairly crude API. The fat-client design loosely follows the MVC pattern (or perhaps MVP) with a php/MySQL backend, Front Controller, several dissimilar Page Controllers, a liberal smattering of object-oriented and procedural Models, a confusing bunch of Views and templates, some JavaScripts, CSS files and Flash objects. The programmer in me is a big fan of the principle of “Separation of Concerns” and on that note, I’m currently trying to figure out the best way to separate and combine the various concerns as the project grows and more people contribute to it. The problem we’re facing is that although JavaScript (or Flash with ActionScript) is normally written with the template, hence part of the View and decoupled from the Controller and Model, we find that it actually encompasses the entire MVC pattern... Swap an image with an onmouseover event - that’s Behaviour. Render a datagrid - we’re manipulating the View. Send the result of reordering a list via AJAX - now we’re in Control. Check a form field to see if an email address is in a valid format - we’re consulting the Model. Is it wise to let the database people write up the validation Model with jQuery? Can the php programmers write the necessary Control structures in JavaScript? Can the web designers really write a functional AJAX form for their View? Should there be a JavaScript overlord for every project? If the MVC pattern could be applied to the people instead of the code, we would end up with this: Model - the database boffins - “SELECT * FROM mind WHERE interested IS NULL” Control - pesky programmers - “class Something extends NothingAbstractClass{…}” View - traditionally the domain of the graphic/web designer - “” …and a new layer: Behaviour - interaction and feedback designer - “CSS3 is the new black…” So, we’re refactoring and I’d like to stick to best practice design, but I’m not sure how to proceed. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel, so would anyone have any hints or tips as to what pattern I should be looking at or any code samples from someone who’s already done the dirty work? As the programmer guy, how can I rewrite the app for backend and front end whilst keeping the two separate? And before you ask, yes I’ve looked at Zend, CodeIgnitor, Symfony, etc., and no, they don’t seem to cross the boundary between server logic and client logic!

• Outlook Marking Email as Junk Email

  I know. I sound like a spammer but these emails are completely legitimate email confirmations for people that have signed up for an account on this website we developed. These emails all make it through to various mail providers (gmail, yahoo, aol, hotmail/live) but they always get directed into the Outlook Junk Email folder. I am have tried using Zend Framework mail, PEAR Mail and phpMailer. All of those methods result in the same thing happening. This seemed to start happening after Microsoft released their update to the Outlook Junk Email filter in January of this year. This is the most basic test we could run and the above generated email gets dumped into the Outlook Junk Email folder. We have reverse DNS on the mail server and it matches the forward DNS, SPF and DKIM are set up and there is nothing "spammy" with the above content. Can anybody see something with the above code that could cause Outlook to mark it as Junk? Thanks!

One of the requirements of the client is that a file(which will be large in size) should be transfered in chunks for example if we have a file of 5Mb size then we can have 5 threads which transfer 1 Mb each. I have written a small application which downloads a file. Small Explanation what this file does This class finds the size of the file to be fetched from Sender Depending upon the size of the file it finds the start and end position till the bytes needs to be read. It starts n number of threads giving each thread start,end, sequence number and a list which all the threads share. Each thread reads the number of bytes and creates a ByteArrayWrapper. ByteArrayWrapper objects are added to the list Then i have while loop which basically make sure that all threads have done their work finally it sorts the list based on the sequence number. then the bytes are joined, and a complete byte array is formed which is converted to a file. In this code i am not able to see the benefit. 2) How should i decide how many threads should i create ? 3) Are their any opensource libraries which does that 4) The file which file receiver receives is valid and not corrupted but checksum (i used FileUtils of common-io) does not match. Whats the problem? 5) This code gives out of memory when used with large file(above 100 Mb) i.e. because byte array which is created. How can i avoid? I know this is a very bad code but i have to write this in one day -:). Please suggest any other good way to do this? Thanks Shekhar
