  • ETPS/" Elantech Touchpad fails detecting single finger

    I have a new laptop with an "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad". A single finger is only detected, if it is held in such a way that a big area touches the pad. If one touches the pad only with the fingertip, it wil not be detected, both for clicking and for moving the pointer. Strangley, two-finger gestures are detected even if the pad is only touched with the fingertips. On ubuntuusers.de I found that Elantech touchpads require to reload the psmouse-module by: sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps If I do this, one finger finally gets detected as it should, but all two or more finger gestures stop working. Also grep -B 5 mouse /proc/bus/input/devices tells that the touchpad now is identified as a mouse, while before the changes it was identified correctly as ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad.

  • Browser window size statistics?

    Hey all, I was wondering, are there any statistics available on what size users have their browser set to nowadays? I know the screen resolutions (we have analytics, which shows those as well) but I doubt a lot of people with 1280*xxx and higher still browse full-screen though. My boss is determined to keep our website 900px wide though, because that way people with 1800*xxx resolutions can have two browser windows next to eachother without having to scroll horizontally. I have never seen anyone browse with two adjacent browser windows like that except here at my current job, so I'm kind of doubting whether this is the best decision or just his personal preference. Anyone that can help out here?

  • How to deal with ad-hoc mindsets?

    I joined a dev team of six two month ago. People are nice, all is good. But more and more I observe an ad-hoc mindset. Stuff gets quick fixed, at the cost of future usability, there is little testing and two people happily admitted, that they like to carry the knowledge around in their head, rather than to write it down. How to deal with this? I'd like to lead by example, but time is limited - I like architecting and actually implementing the stuff. But I'm afraid the ad-hoc mindset infects me and rather than striving for clearness and simplicity in design and code - which isn't simple to establish - I get pulled down the drain of an endless spiral of hacks on hacks - which no outsider can uncouple - just for schedule's and management's sake.

    Technically, Is there a difference between these two words or can we use them interchangeably? Both of them more or less describe the logical sequence of steps that follow in solving a problem. ain't it? SO why do we actually use two such words if they are meant to talk of the same? Or, In case if they aren't synonymous words, What is it that differentiates them? In what contexts are we supposed to use the word pseudo code vs the word algorithm? Thanks.

  • Frame Interpolation issues for skeletal animation

    I'm trying to animate in-between keyframes for skeletal animation but having some issues. Each joint is represented by a quaternion and there is no translation component. When I try to slerp between the orientations at the two key frames, I got a very wacky animation. I know my skinning equation is right because the animation is perfectly fine when the animation is directly on a keyframe rather than in-between two. I'm using glm's built in mix function to do the slerp, so I don't think there are any problems with the actual slerp implementation. There's really one thing left that could be wrong here. I must not be in the correct space to do slerp. Right now the orientations are in joint local space. Do I have to be in world space? In some other space along the way? I have the bind pose matrix and world-space transformation matrix at my disposal if those are needed.

  • Auto-Configuring SSIS Packages

    SSIS Package Configurations are very useful to make packages flexible so that you can change objects properties at run-time and thus make the package configurable without having to open and edit it. In a complex scenario where you have dozen of packages (even in in the smallest BI project I worked on I had 50 packages), each package may have its own configuration needs. This means that each time you have to run the package you have to pass the correct Package Configuration. I usually use XML configuration files and I also force everyone that works with me to make sure that an object that is used in several packages has the same name in all package where it is used, in order to simplify configurations usage. Connection Managers are a good example of one of those objects. For example, all the packages that needs to access to the Data Warehouse database must have a Connection Manager named DWH. Basically we define a set of “global” objects so that we can have a configuration file for them, so that it can be used by all packages. If a package as some specific configuration needs, we create a specific – or “local” – XML configuration file or we set the value that needs to be configured at runtime using DTLoggedExec’s Package Parameters: http://dtloggedexec.davidemauri.it/Package%20Parameters.ashx Now, how we can improve this even more? I’d like to have a package that, when it’s run, automatically goes “somewhere” and search for global or local configuration, loads it and applies it to itself. That’s the basic idea of Auto-Configuring Packages. The “somewhere” is a SQL Server table, defined in this way In this table you’ll put the values that you want to be used at runtime by your package: The ConfigurationFilter column specify to which package that configuration line has to be applied. A package will use that line only if the value specified in the ConfigurationFilter column is equal to its name. In the above sample. only the package named “simple-package” will use the line number two. There is an exception here: the $$Global value indicate a configuration row that has to be applied to any package. With this simple behavior it’s possible to replicate the “global” and the “local” configuration approach I’ve described before. The ConfigurationValue contains the value you want to be applied at runtime and the PackagePath contains the object to which that value will be applied. The ConfiguredValueType column defined the data type of the value and the Checksum column is contains a calculated value that is simply the hash value of ConfigurationFilter plus PackagePath so that it can be used as a Primary Key to guarantee uniqueness of configuration rows. As you may have noticed the table is very similar to the table originally used by SSIS in order to put DTS Configuration into SQL Server tables: SQL Server SSIS Configuration Type: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms141682.aspx Now, how it works? It’s very easy: you just have to call DTLoggedExec with the /AC option: DTLoggedExec.exe /FILE:”mypackage.dtsx” /AC:"localhost;ssis_auto_configuration;ssiscfg.configuration" the AC option expects a string with the following format: <database_server>;<database_name>;<table_name>; only Windows Authentication is supported. When DTLoggedExec finds an Auto-Configuration request, it injects a new connection manager in the loaded package. The injected connection manager is named $$DTLoggedExec_AutoConfigure and is used by the two SQL Server DTS Configuration ($$DTLoggedExec_Global and $$DTLoggedExec_Local) also injected by DTLoggedExec, used to load “local” and “global” configuration. Now, you may start to wonder why this approach cannot be used without having all this stuff going around, but just passing to a package always two XML DTS Configuration files, (to have to “local” and the “global” configurations) doing something like this: DTLoggedExec.exe /FILE:”mypackage.dtsx” /CONF:”global.dtsConfig” /CONF:”mypackage.dtsConfig” The problem is that this approach doesn’t work if you have, in one of the two configuration file, a value that has to be applied to an object that doesn’t exists in the loaded package. This situation will raise an error that will halt package execution. To solve this problem, you may want to create a configuration file for each package. Unfortunately this will make deployment and management harder, since you’ll have to deal with a great number of configuration files. The Auto-Configuration approach solve all these problems at once! We’re using it in a project where we have hundreds of packages and I can tell you that deployment of packages and their configuration for the pre-production and production environment has never been so easy!   • Convert filenames to their checksum before saving to prevent duplicates. Is is a smart thing to do?

    TL;DR:what the title says I am developing some sort of image board in PHP. I was thinking of changing each image's filename to it's checksum prior to saving it. This way, I might be able to prevent duplicates. I know this wouldn't work for two images that are the same but differ in size or level of compression or whatnot, but this method would allow for an early check. What bugs me is that I never saw this method implemented anywhere, so I was wondering if there is a catch to it. Maybe it is just more efficient to keep the original filename and store the hash in DB? Maybe the whole method is just not useful and my question is moot? What do you think? On a side note, I don't really get how hashes are calculated so I was wondering, if my first question checks out, if it would be possible to calculate the likeness that two images are similar by comparing hashes (levenshtein or something of the sort).

  • Triple monitor setup with an ATI Radeon 4200?

    I have a relatively new Powerspec computer (i5 quad core processor, about a year or two old) and just grabbed a new relatively inexpensive ($40?) graphics card. It has 1 DVI, one VGA, and one HDMI output. I have two (different type) monitors plugged into the DVI and VGA slots, and they work great. However, I cannot seem to be able to get a third monitor in the HDMI slot to work. I can see the monitor (and monitor info) show up in display settings. However, if I try to switch the monitor to 'on' and click apply, nothing happens. Anyone have the slightest idea what the problem might be? (It's a Radeon graphics card FYI; if I remember right I think it was the Radeon 4200?)

How to share files between those two? I have already tried few ways (eg. samba), but it looks like the machines are not visible to each other: @machine1$: ping 192.168.168.104 From 192.168.168.105 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable What do I need to configure? Apparmor? Firewall?

Changes for EBS 11i Sustaining Support The first change is that  we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: New fixes for Severity 1 production issues United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates Payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014 Customers environments must have the minimum baseline patches (or above) for new Severity 1 production bug fixes as documented here: Patch Requirements for Extended Support of Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (Note 883202.1) 2.     This simple hack combines the swing arms of two IKEA work lamps with a set of computer speakers for flexible and easily adjustable sound. IKEAHackers reader Bill Dwyer wanted an easy way to get the speakers off his desk but still be able to easily adjust them. By hacking apart two IKEA work lamps (he removed the light assembly and snipped the wires off) he was able to attach his computer speakers to the arms and, in the process, get them off the desk.     Compare two input dates to avoid invalid dates. In this example I have created two textboxes and namded as "TextBoxSeminarDate" and "TextBoxBookingDeadline". Booking deadline date must be before date to the Seminar date. Therefore I used Operator as "LesThanEqual". I have validated "TextBoxBookingDeadline" value comparing with the "TextBoxSeminarDate" value as follow.   <asp:CompareValidator ID="CompareValidatorBookingDeadline" runat="server" ControlToCompare="TextBoxSeminarDate" ControlToValidate="TextBoxBookingDeadline" Display="Dynamic" ErrorMessage="Please check the seminar date and select appropriate date for booking deadline" Operator="LessThanEqual" Type="Date"  ValueToCompare="<%= TextBoxSeminarDate.Text.ToShortString() %>">*</asp:CompareValidator> The important thing is "ValueToCompare" property of the compare validator.     Possible Duplicate: Does the order of keywords matter in a page title? Apologies if this is a dupe. I tried searching, but didn't find anything specifically addressing this concern. When creating a large(ish) site, page titles usually reference both the site name and the current page name. However, it seems there are two main conventions: Bob's Awesome Site - Contact Page and Contact Page - Bob's Awesome Site I've looked around, and pages usually use one of the two variants above. Is there any reason to use one over the other? SEO/readability/usability/etc? I've thought about it, and have only come up with: Page first - Differentiates the tab when the browser is crowded with lots of tabs Site first - Immediately see the "parent" site, so to speak; more cohesive experience

  • Reassign the Right button functionality of touchpad

    My notebook has a touchpad with two buttons. The touchpad works pretty well and I use it for vertical/horizontal scroll, two fingers scrolling etc. The Left button acts like the left button of a mouse. The Right button too, when clicked it makes appear the classic contextual menu (create new folder, move to trash etc...). The problem is that Right button doesn't work anymore for mechanical reasons, so pressing it has no effect. To recover the missing functionality, I'd like that pressing CTRL + Left button I get the same thing of pressing the Right button alone. Other combinations (CTRL + SHIFT + Left button) are also acceptable. Any way to do that?

    I have to admit that I can't get enough storage. I have hard drives just sitting around in case I need to move somthing, or I'm going to a friends and either they want something I have or I want something they might have. What I'm going to talk about today is cost effective memory for devices. I don't know how this particualr device will work in a camera, as That's not what I use in my camera, in fact I don't have a camera that doesn't either use SD, or the old compact flash card, that's not so compact anymore. There's this thing that uses two micro sd cards to double the capacity of your memory, and it costs about 4 bucks, without the Micro SD card. I have had one for about a year and was going to throw it away because I couldn't get it to work with my computer, or with my Sony Reader. However I found out by one last ditch effort that this thing works beautifully with my Sony PSP. there is no software to speak of associated with this thing, you simply put in two SD cards of the same size... (if you put in two different sizes it will still work, you'll only double the smallest cards size though) and format through the psp. Viola you know have a 29 GB memory card for your PSP. why is this important ? well for starters you can carry more music and more videos. Second if you have gone the way of the hacker.... you can store more games on your card... There are just a few things you have to note.... I speak from experience... you have to use the usb connection to the PSP to do any file moving, as I said previously said card doesn't play well with my computers or card readers... I not saying it won't work at all, just hasn't work with anything I own. Second. If for some reason you try to Hack/crack your PSP don't attempt to delete a game from the psp, use the usb file browser to remove games. if you delete from the PSP you are likely to have to move all your files off, reformat and start again... just a couple things I have noticed... if I had done something like that.   anyway, Here's a link.... http://www.photofast-adapter.com/  and if you want to buy one, get it off ebay, I've seen them as low as $1.99

  • my wiki site using mediawiki - databases not found error

    I had been using mediawiki opensource in my website to display programming articles. Today i tried to access my site but it showed database not found. Mediawiki uses many databases. When i logged in my control panel and checked i can see that most of the databases created by mediawiki is missing so is the reason i am getting this error. I have used mediawiki for two different purposes. It is like two modules. For one the databases are missing and for the other i think the data is corrupt. Do anybody know any issue with mediawiki security or would this be a problem with the webhosting cause we have faced several problems with them initially like before three years and recently the were good. Yet this happened. I have requested to hosting company to look into it and meanwhile i am expecting the help from stackexchange users. How do i check the logs for table deletion?

  • Problem mounting USB Mobile Broadband dongle in Ubuntu 13.04

    I have been using Ubuntu 13.04 since last two months and I have problem mounting my USB dongle. I have Lenovo G-580 series laptop. It has 3 USB ports which are 3.0. When I attach dongle to one of the three USB ports the device gets mounted immediately but in the other two ports I have to reboot the OS while the dongle is attached to the laptop in order to mount it and connect to the internet. My dongle is of ZTE. I don't get what is going wrong.

  • Jupiter seems to break multimonitor setup

    If Jupiter is in the startup my multimonitor setup will fail. Instead of two separate desktops the monitors will be mirrored, one over the other with the smaller notebook-desktop in the larger screen: After each new log-in I have to reset the Display settings in the "System Settings..." dialogue to two not mirrored screens, the changes don't seem to be saved. Given the the entry from xsession-errors /usr/lib/jupiter/scripts/resolutions: line 42: /var/jupiter/available_resolutions_LVDS: Permission denied I assumed that it's coming from Jupiter. Infact, if Jupiter is removed as startup application the desktop settings are fine. Any idea how to solve that issue?
