  • When uninstalling all GRUB packages for EC2 AMI build script, how do I bypass prompting?

    When I try to uninstall all GRUB packages from the cloud-image version of Ubuntu I use in AWS EC2, I get an interactive prompt. I need put this all in a script under automation, so prompts need to be avoided. I have searched for means to bypass this, and all of the features like debconf apply to prompts for config settings which can be provided in advance. But the prompt I am getting is not a config prompt. It would be in the class of "are you sure" prompts. I tried --force-all and that did not work. The prompt is referring to the files in /boot/grub so I tried by first doing "rm -fr /boot/grub" (they do all go away) and it still prompts to ask me if I want to delete them even though there is nothing to delete. The wording of the prompt is: Do you want to have all GRUB 2 files removed from /boot/grub? This will make the system unbootable unless another boot loader is installed. Remove GRUB 2 from /boot/grub? <YES> <NO> The command I am doing is: dpkg --purge grub-common grub-gfxpayload-lists grub-legacy-ec2 grub-pc grub-pc-bin grub2-common How can I get past this prompt without trying to encapsulate it in something that tries to answer (which itself has issues when there is no TTY so I want to avoid that) ?

  • Secondment promotion promises

    I'm a Java developer at a large FTSE 30 company. My line manager approached me and asked if I'd like to be the teams lead developer. I was keen to accept. Initially he said I'd be acting-up for 3 months, then changed his tune and said I would be doing a 6 month secondment. During this time, he has got himself promoted and I have a new line manager. I have been very successful during this secondment and reviews have been overwhelmingly positive: both from my former line manager and current line manager. However, six months on, no lead role has been created in the organization and a new director has re-organised the structure of the team: two senior roles (senior Android and senior iOS) are going to be created. I feel a bit put-out that my secondment has amounted to nothing. I could have just done nothing and then applied for the senior role 6 months later (which I feel aren't as marketable as Lead developer). During my secondment I have basically become TA, senior developer, line manager and general go-to guy for all things (across Android and iOS). What do you think I should do, and has my company abused it's position? I feel they have offered a secondment to a role that they never really planned to create. During this time I have received no financial benefit for doing a more senior role.

  • After installing Ubuntu my computer boots into GRUB rescue mode after displaying 'no such partition' error message.

    I wanted Ubuntu on my Gateway Solo Laptop. It had Win98 on the C:\ and WinXP on the D:\. Before the install, I could not boot from CD, but I could boot from floppy. I installed Ubuntu to run alongside Windows XP as that was one of the options. It didn't detect Win98, but I swear it's on there. Install seemed fine and then it asked me to reboot. When I rebooted, I got the message error: no such partition and the grub rescue> command prompt. I've looked around, but some commands, like sudo, don't work. One command I did get to work was set root=(hd0,0) if that helps. I'm a noob, and it was a pain installing Win98 and XP since this system is so old. I don't want to wipe my drive and start all over! Additional details copied from comments Addendum, I restored my master boot record via my Win98 boot floppy and typing in frisk /mbr. But, I'd still like to get ubuntu - any help? If I restored my master boot record - did I delete Ubuntu?

  • Problem installing Ubuntu 14.04 into a laptop using Windows 8.1

    I have used Ubuntu on my LG laptop for several years. I lately bought an Acer Aspire V5 laptop which included Windows 8.1. I don't have any data on it; I would like to just remove it completely (that horrible Windows 8.1) and install Ubuntu. I tried using a USB device with Ubuntu 14.04 (64bit version) saved on it. I changed the BIOS configuration, putting USB device first on boot order, Windows Boot Manager last. When I try to run with USB device it doesn't work. Messages like these show up: System doesn't have any USB boot option. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager Menu. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer 2. choose your language settings, and then click "next" 3. click "repair your computer" If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator manufacturer for assistance File \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000007b Info: the application or operating system couldn't be load...[?] required file is missing or contains errors. Could someone please write step-by-step procedures to install Ubuntu 14.04 after removing Windows 8.1 ? I already have done a second partition on the hard disk just in case.

  • Installing 11.10 on flash drive failed

    This is my problem. I burned Ubuntu 11.10 iso to a CD. I was able to boot my PC with it. I plugged in my flash drive, and inserted the CD and restarted the computer to boot Ubuntu. I then chose to install Ubuntu alongside with Windows (XP prof.). Then I was able to select my flash drive as the installation location. I prepared partitons by dragging a bar and allocating the size for the Ubuntu installation, and for other files. I set 3GB for ubuntu and 1GB for other files. The pen drive was partitioned and files installed on it. After sucess I ejected the CD to restart the PC to use the new OS. When it restarted I expected to be asked to select an OS to boot. But I could only boot with Windows XP. Properties of my flash drive show its total capacity is 1GB. The partitioned 3GB is missing. How can I boot with the USB stick? How can I get my 4GB USB stick back?

    I am reading "Java Concurrency in practice" and looking at the example code on page 51. According to the book this piece of code is at risk of of failure if it has not been published properly. Because I like to code examples and break them to prove how they work. I have tried to make it throw an AssertionError but have failed. (Leading me to my previous question) Can anyone post sample code so that an AssertionError is thrown? This states that if a thread has references to a shared object then other threads may be able to access that object before the constructor has finished executing. I have tried to put this into practice and so I wrote this code thinking that if I ran it enough times a RuntimeException("World is f*cked") would occur. But it isn't doing. Is this a case of the Java spec not guaranting something but my particular implementation of java guaranteeing it for me? (java version: 1.5.0 on Ubuntu) Or have I misread something in the book?     This same problem keeps cropping up. I have a viewModel that doesn't have any persistent backing. It is just a ViewModel to generate a search input form. I want to build a large where clause from the values the user entered. If the Action Accepts as a parameter SearchViewModel How do I do this without passing my viewModel to my service layer? Service shouldn't know about ViewModels right? Oh and if I serialize it, then it would be a big string and the key/values would be strongly typed. SearchViewModel this is just a snippet. The reason being that I need to add people to a database and I would prefer not to do it in two passes. So, I basically have: <employees> <employee> <employeeid>12</employeeid> <manager>3</manager> </employee> <employee> <employeeid>1</employeeid> <manager></manager> </employee> <employee> <employeeid>3</employeeid> <manager>1</manager> </employee> </employees> So, it should be sorted as such: employeeid = 1 employeeid = 3 employeeid = 12 The first person should have a null for managers. I am thinking about a binary tree representation, but I expect it will be very unbalanced, and I am not certain the best way to do this using Groovy properly. Is there a way to do this that isn't going to involve using nested loops?

  • Alternate way to create a clone of a UNIX System

    THE STORY: (If you don't like to read much, down below is the question :) ) Where I work we have two HP RP2470 servers same hardware same number of hard drives same everything :). One of them is a production server and runs HP-UX 11.00. The poor ba***rd hasn't been turned off for years and now I have to make a clone of it on the other server - just in case, for redundancy. The problem is simple (or not simple) as I have to make the the other server exactly the same. However the old version of OS (UX 11.00 is a history now) and the old software running on it, have made my task almost impossible. On the production server there is also a cloning/recover utility Ignite-UX. I tried many times to create a recovery tape with it. Then when I load the tape on the backup server, it succeeds with the loading of the tape (no errors no warnings) but on the next restart it fails to load the OS :S and drops into HP`s ISL prompt. --- THE QUESTION: Is there an alternate way to create a clone of the Unix System? The environment is: 1. 2x HP RP2470 Servers (non-Intel), same hardware, same number od HDDs (two each of them) same everything. 2. OS running: HP-UX 11.00 The production server has to be cloned without downtime - sadly :( as I hope that they will reconsider on this one For example (like on Windows platforms), if you try to copy an entire HDD with Windows inside on another HDD, and then put that HDD on another PC it will still work, as long as the hardware is the same. Can I do something like that with a Unix system? Can I somehow COPY the contents of the entire HDD, put those on another HDD, and then just load the HDD into the other server? (If you haven't read the story the servers are exactly the same) Will it work? Can it be done with ordinary commands like cp or dump or something like that?   • Dual boot, win7 & ubuntu. Gparted, resize not move. Performance?

    I installed dual boot on a computer that already had win7 installed. The question here is about gparted ability to move partitions. I made place for ubuntu in the computers "Data" partition, by resizing it. But I canceled the "move" action. Was that incredibly stupid, or is this care? Maybe performance is affected. Can this effect the hd's lifespan? The computer is UL30A.

  • Enabling WinRM by Group Policy

    I'm having partial success enabling WinRM through Active Directory GPO's on our Server 2008 R2 environment. I've created a GPO that enables "Allow automatic configuration of listeners" and also enables all the necessary predefined WinRM Firewall rules. This GPO works fine for our webservers. Indeed, this is reflected by the "Server Manager Remote Management" nicely flipping to "enabled" in Server Manager Server Summary. However, the same GPO applied to both our Management servers, which are Domain Controllers, does not give the same result. I see the GPO settings being applied, including the listener as confirmed by C:\Windows\system32>winrm e winrm/config/listener Listener [Source="GPO"] Address = * Transport = HTTP Port = 5985 Hostname Enabled = true URLPrefix = wsman CertificateThumbprint ListeningOn = 10.32.40.210, 10.32.40.211, 10.32.40.212 But in Server Manager, Server Summary, Remote Management remains on "disabled" and indeed when trying to connect to one of these machines Server Manager gives an "Access Denied". Manually enabling WinRM locally via Server Manager "Configure Server Manager Remote Management" on either of these machines works fine. What can be the cause? Can it have something to do with theses machines being DC's and needing extra settings in the GPO? Nick Reid

  • How to repair Mac OSX without reinstalling?

    I have an intel PC. I have installed iDeneb Mac OS X in my pc. It's running fine. After that I thought to install Snow Leopard for running the iPad SDK. So I bought a retail Snow Leopard and boot it with Rebel EFI boot loader. When I was installing Snow Leopard, at the end of installation, setup gives an error. So I restarted my PC and boot with Rebel and I saw that mac was there so I boot that into safe mode and Mac OSX runs. After that I install iPad SDK. But when I try to create an application, XCode is not responsive. It hangs when I choose new project, give it a name and save it on disk. After just as I gave name and choose save it hangs. Is there any way i can repair my Mac OSX without reinstalling? I have also unable to boot into normal mode and also without Rebel CD. So I want to boot without Rebel CD and also want to run iPad SDK so please help me to solve this problem.
