  I have a form on my website in which one is able to submit a cat. The form contains inputs such as "Name" and "Gender", but I am just trying to get the auto completion to work with the "Name" field.   I'm trying to read the public twitter status of a user so I can display it in my Windows Phone application. I'm using Scott Gu's example: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/03/18/building-a-windows-phone-7-twitter-application-using-silverlight.aspx When my code comes back from the async call, I get a "System.Security.SecurityException" as soon as I try to use the e.Result. I know my uri is correct because I can plop it in the browser and get good results. • File based caching under PHP

  I've been using http://code.google.com/p/phpbrowscap/ for a project, and it usually works nice. But a few times it's cache, which is plain php-files (see http://code.google.com/p/phpbrowscap/source/browse/trunk/browscap/Browscap.php#372 et. al.), has been "zeroed", i.e. the whole cache file has become large blob of NULLs. Instead of trying to find out why the files become NULL, I though perhaps it might be better to change the caching strategy to something more resilient. So I do wonder if you has any good ideas what would be a good solution; I've been looking at http://www.jongales.com/blog/2009/02/18/simple-file-based-php-cache-class/ and http://www.phpclasses.org/package/313-PHP-Cache-arbitrary-data-in-files-.html and I also though of just saving an serialized array to the file instead of pure php as it's been doing now; But I'm uncertain what approach I should target here. I'm grateful for any insight into this area of technology, as I know it's complex from a performance point of view.

• How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images

  I have inherited a website to maintain that uses a html map overlaying a real map to link specific countries to specific pages. previously it loaded the default map image, then with some javascript it would change the image src to an image with that particular country in a different colour on mouseover and reset the image source back to the original image on mouse out to make maintenance (adding new countries) easier i made the initial map a background image by utilising some CSS for the div tag, and then created new images for each country which only had that countries hightlight so that the images remain fairly small. this works great but theres one issue which is particularly noticeable on slower internet connections when you hover over a country if you dont have the image file in your browser cache or downloaded it wont load the image unless you hover over another country and then back onto the first country - i guess this is due to the image having to manually be downloaded on first hover. • Multiple WPFPreviewHandlers in One Window? Can it be done?

  Here is the scenario. I am building a part of my desktop app up and I have a need to create a preview handler. I found plenty of examples on the web of a WPF Preview handler, but I wanted to go one step more than just that. Lets say we have multiple documents and I wished to compare them. So the ideal scenario would be able to see documents side by side in a collection. Sort of how BING does their image search. But the more documents I select in a list box, the more documents I can compare all at once. The second Ideal solution would be a tabbed interface. One tab for each document. Sort of like how internet browsers are doing it now. Understand? So here is the question that I have been struggling with. I can get one preview to work in a window, but can’t get the second one to show up. This is all WPF code so maybe im doing something wrong, but can you preview more than one document in a window at a time? My thought is no, because the previewhandler needs a window handler to lock onto. I would love small code sample since COM and handlers aren’t my sort of thing, but I can manage if you are just able to point me down the right track. Well I've looked up several methods to fix this in my Windows Phone 7 app but I can't seem to find anything that works. What confuses me is that I've done something just like this before with no problem, so I'm not sure why it's not working. The code causing me the problem is this: if (appSettings.Contains("image")) { myImage.Source = (string)appSettings["image"]; } else { myImage.Source = "default.jpg"; } The error I get is this "Cannot implicitly convert type 'string' to 'System.Windows.Media.ImageSource". I'm doing an Image Cache following this method: http://www.brandondement.com/blog/2009/08/18/creating-an-image-cache-with-actionscript-3/ I copied the two as classes, renaming them CachedImage and CachedImageMap. The thing is that I don't want to store the image after being loaded a first time, but while the application is being loaded. For that, I've created a function that is called by the application pre-initialize event.   I have a Client WCF Host Service SOAP 1.2 Service setup and i'm having performance issues on the SOAP Java proxy. I have no control over how the Java service is setup, aside from the endpoint config. I have the Client running Asynchronously, and the host WCF service running in Async pattern, but i see the SOAP 1.2 proxy bottlenecking and handling the requests in a Synchronous way. Can someone take a look at the auto-generated SOAP 1.2 configuration below, from the SOAP 1.2 Service wsdl? Is there a way to configure this for Async way and improve performance?   I have a machine on Linode that is driving me crazy. Linode does not have SELinux on CentOS6... I'm trying to configure to put my website in "/home/websites/public_html/mysite.com/public" As I don´t have SELinux enable, how can I avoid the "403 Forbidden" that I get when trying to access the webpage?   When I tried configuring local machine as a Internet Gateway with website development capabilities over it and I installed all required software into it. I also had disable the selinux into it. But PROBLEM is when I do http://localhost/phpMyAdmin or all lower case than the page shows it as a blank page. The only solution I found until now was to set $IPT -P INPUT ACCEPT and $IPT -I INPUT -i eth0 -j ACCEPT, but this configuration does not protect me of any attack, which is a great shame for a firewall. This does not make any sense... Does somebody understand where my error comes from? EDIT #3 : After some more tests, I found out that commenting the SYN flood countermeasure removes the problem. I continue researches in this way but, meanwhile, if somebody sees my anti SYN flood rule error...

• Improving SAS multipath to JBOD performance on Linux

  Hello all I'm trying to optimize a storage setup on some Sun hardware with Linux. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. We have the following hardware: Sun Blade X6270 2* LSISAS1068E SAS controllers 2* Sun J4400 JBODs with 1 TB disks (24 disks per JBOD) Fedora Core 12 2.6.33 release kernel from FC13 (also tried with latest 2.6.31 kernel from FC12, same results) Here's the datasheet for the SAS hardware: http://www.sun.com/storage/storage_networking/hba/sas/PCIe.pdf It's using PCI Express 1.0a, 8x lanes. With a bandwidth of 250 MB/sec per lane, we should be able to do 2000 MB/sec per SAS controller. Each controller can do 3 Gb/sec per port and has two 4 port PHYs. We connect both PHYs from a controller to a JBOD. So between the JBOD and the controller we have 2 PHYs * 4 SAS ports * 3 Gb/sec = 24 Gb/sec of bandwidth, which is more than the PCI Express bandwidth. With write caching enabled and when doing big writes, each disk can sustain about 80 MB/sec (near the start of the disk). With 24 disks, that means we should be able to do 1920 MB/sec per JBOD. multipath { rr_min_io 100 uid 0 path_grouping_policy multibus failback manual path_selector "round-robin 0" rr_weight priorities alias somealias no_path_retry queue mode 0644 gid 0 wwid somewwid } I tried values of 50, 100, 1000 for rr_min_io, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. Along with varying rr_min_io I tried adding some delay between starting the dd's to prevent all of them writing over the same PHY at the same time, but this didn't make any difference, so I think the I/O's are getting properly spread out. According to /proc/interrupts, the SAS controllers are using a "IR-IO-APIC-fasteoi" interrupt scheme. For some reason only core #0 in the machine is handling these interrupts. I can improve performance slightly by assigning a separate core to handle the interrupts for each SAS controller: echo 2 /proc/irq/24/smp_affinity echo 4 /proc/irq/26/smp_affinity Using dd to write to the disk generates "Function call interrupts" (no idea what these are), which are handled by core #4, so I keep other processes off this core too. I run 48 dd's (one for each disk), assigning them to cores not dealing with interrupts like so: taskset -c somecore dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mapper/mpathx oflag=direct bs=128M oflag=direct prevents any kind of buffer cache from getting involved. None of my cores seem maxed out. The cores dealing with interrupts are mostly idle and all the other cores are waiting on I/O as one would expect. • Unable to ping local machines by name in Windows 7

  I'm having a strange (and persistent!) problem with pinging local machines on my network by name. I believe my machine (Windows 7 64-bit) is the only one having this issue. This is over a wireless connection. As an example, consider a device on my network by the name of WDTVLiveHub. It's a Western Digital Live Hub (surprise!). If I go to my router's DHCP Client Table in the browser (my router is a WRT400N), I see this entry: WDTVLiveHub 192.168.1.101 Great. So I try to ping that IP address: ping 192.168.1.101 Pinging 192.168.1.101 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.101: bytes=32 time=9ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.1.101: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.1.101: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.1.101: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=64 Ping statistics for 192.168.1.101: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 9ms, Maximum = 16ms, Average = 14ms OK, still looking good. From what I've read, this implies a problem with DNS servers and host name lookups. • KVM/Libvirt bridged/routed networking not working on newer guest kernels

  I have a dedicated server running Debian 6, with Libvirt (0.9.11.3) and Qemu-KVM (qemu-kvm-1.0+dfsg-11, Debian). I am having a problem getting bridged/routed networking to work in KVM guests with newer kernels (2.6.38). NATted networking works fine though. Older kernels work perfectly fine as well. The host kernel is at version 3.2.0-2-amd64, the problem was also there on an older host kernel. EDIT: I can ping the host from inside the guest.

• Messenger Thinks My Ip is Invalid

  Hello. I am using Windows Live Messenger 2009 on Windows 7. I am using a 3G modem (ZTE Propietary USB Modem) I connect to the Internet using a software my ISP provided me. In last three days, my Messenger started to disconnect. Here is what I observed and tried to do: 1- I can browse web, can do FTP transfer etc. and obiviously have a valid IP. 2- I can sign in to Messenger (appear offline) but when I change my status to anything other then appear offline, Messenger says my connection to service has been lost. (However, it exists.) 3- When I run, MSN Connection Troubleshooter, it says my IP is invalid. When I click repair, it says repaired and just after that, I run the troubleshooter again, and it says my IP is invalid again. (However, it is valid and I am browsing the net.) 4- If I connect the Internet through eterhet or wireless there is no problem at all. 5- I re-installed Messenger (deleting all settings manually through registry and folders), re-installed all drivers and software related to USB 3G Modem. It doesn't work. And then, I took a full backup then formatted entire computer, installed a fresh windows 7, after 5 minutes, the same problem occured. What do you recommend? What can I do? • Motherboard/PSU crippling USB and Sata

  I very recently bought a new desktop computer. The motherboard is: Z77MX-D3H and the power supply is ocz zs series 550w. The issue I have is that once I boot to the operating system (I have tried with fedora and Ubuntu with kernels 2.6.38 - 3.4.0), my hard drive (2.5" Magnetic) occasionally makes a power switch noise and it resets. Needless to say, when this drive is the OS drive, the OS crashes. I also have a SSD that works fine with the same OS configurations, but if I have the magnetic hard drive attached as second drive, it works erratically and the reconnects result in corrupted data. Also the issue of the usb reconnects is less frequent if the hard drive is plugged before I switch on the computer. Does anybody have some advice as to what I could do? Which is the faulty part/s that I should replace? As for me, I really don't know if to point my finger to the PSU or the Motherboard (I have updated to the latest firmware and checked the BIOS settings several times). EDIT: The reconnects are happening both in the Sata connected drives and the USBX connected drives.

• My D-Link's Ethernet bridge downlink just got 10-30x slower?

  TL;DR: I unplugged my network to move my desk, and now downloading via my DIR-655's Ethernet LAN bridge is 10-30x slower than the Ethernet switch it's plugged into. Background My network is SMC cable modem <-> Cisco firewall <-> Netgear switch <-> D-Link WiFi† | | | | SMC8014 ASA-5505 GS608v2 gigE DIR-655 rev A3 gigE †The DIR-655 is used as an access point, not a router (although what D-Link calls an access point, I'd call a bridge). The "WAN" port is unused; the Netgear connects to the built-in 4-port Ethernet LAN switch, inside the built- in router/firewall. Endpoints: MacBook Pro 17" mid-2010 iPhone 4S Fedora 12 Linux server running reasonably fast dual-Athlon X2, VelociRaptors, etc. All cables are <10 feet, mostly CAT-5e, some CAT-6, all premade. All WiFi endpoints are within three feet of the D-Link. Yesterday I unplugged and rearranged stuff, and now connecting via the D-Link - even through the wired switch, right next to the incoming network cable - is 30x slower than connecting directly to the Netgear switch, on both my MacBook and iPhone. How I'm measuring "slower" I'm mostly using http://speedtest.net, which of course only really measures broadband speeds. I've also installed http://www.speedtest.net/mini.php on my local server, but can't test the iPhone with that. Since ssh is choppy just with slow typing, I don't believe it's a throttling-type problem either; that's not a lot of bandwidth. What I've tried Swapping all "good" and "bad" cables Re-plugging "bad" cable from D-Link to Netgear and watching it be the "good" cable pulling cables away from power lines Verify that the Mac auto-detects the D-Link as gigE Try to verify the link speed of the D-Link <- Netgear connection, but the firmware doesn't report that Verify that the D-Link sees no TX/RX errors or collisions Use different Ethernet ports on both Netgear and D-Link Reset the D-Link to factory settings Upgrade the D-Link firmware from 1.21 to 1.35NA, 2010/11/12, the latest Reboot everything at least once On the Mac, disable Wi-Fi during the Ethernet tests, and unplug Ethernet during the Wi-Fi tests Using iStumbler, verify that the D-Link isn't picking overloaded Wi-Fi channels (usually just 1-5 neighbors on my and adjacent channels, average for my apt building) Verify that the only client connected to the Wi-Fi was the iPhone Verify that nothing was being chatty on my network according to the WISH log Enable and disable all sorts of D-Link settings, including forcing WAN auto-detect to gigE So. I don't mind buying a new access point—I wouldn't mind having a dual-link network—but as a guy who's been networking since gated v4 was a drastic rewrite, and who often used physical sniffers in the days before Wireshark, I'm baffled. I hate being baffled. What could I possibly have changed that would result in this? How can I measure it? All I can think of is a static zap—thick carpet, socks, HVAC—but I didn't feel one, and does that really happen anymore? Can I test if it's Ethernet vs. TCP layer slowness? I'm not familiar with modern network utilities; it's hard to Google without hitting "Q: Why is my network slow? A: Is your microwave on?" If I don't get an answer here, will someone big and powerful help me migrate it to serverfault without getting screamed back here? In the words of Inigo Montoya, "I must know."
