  I have console access to an embedded linux device. This device has flash memory part of which is partitioned as a FAT filesystem. Its running linux-2.6.31. • What lightweight solution can you recommend to stream MP3 files?

  Hi there, I need to stream MP3 files to a client running Flash. Streaming is the key here, no progressive downloads allowed. What free server can you recommend? I know Red5 but it seems a bit overkill for our needs (basic MP3 streaming). Anything more lightweight? Our Webserver runs Linux and Apache and we can install stuff there as long as it doesn't bog down the machine. Plus there is Perl and PHP although I don't think this will help for streaming, right? Thank you!

• SATA Devices not showing up when in UEFI mode

  I'm trying to install Windows and the bios should be set to UEFI mode. The problem is that all SATA devices aren't showing up (shows as if there aren't any) so I can't boot from the installation CD (it's just not there). The weird thing is that when set to LEGACY mode they all show up.. SATA mode is set to AHCI and I'm on Lenovo Y510P. I have a Linux OS installed that is accessible only when BIOS is in LEGACY mode (otherwise the hard drive it's on is not available) I also tried reseting the BIOS settings which didn't help.. Comment please if more details needed Extra details: Computer model: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P (not overcloacked) Installed Linux OS version: Linux 3.7-trunk-amd64 x86_64 Trying to install Windows: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit BIOS Information: Vendor: LENOVO Version: 74CN26WW(V1.07) Update: Using user1608638 answer and suggestion of using the USB flash drive as the boot device instead of the CD/DVD method I succeeded in installing Windows 7!   I want to stream hi-def (non flash-based) movies from my future minimum spec pc to my network-ready HDTV. What I want to know is a) when streaming from a computer (local wifi network), is the computer's cpu/video/ram resources used to the same extent as it would be if playing back on the computers local screen? If not what are the differences? b) So with streaming hd content what is the minimum spec processor I should go for, if i) only one TV is acting as client ii) two TVs are simultaneous clients.

• How can I restore GRUB without a live CD?

  I realize that this is a duplicate of a question asked before, but in that question the asker managed to find his live CD and no real answer appeared, thus I am re-asking it. I managed to screw up my GRUB by deleting two linux partitions on my hard drive from windows. After this, GRUB gives the error "partition not found", and gives me the grub-rescue prompt. The only command I have found to work in this is 'ls', which spits out my partitions. I would use the live CD fix, but I am in India, and all my live CDs are back home in the US... What I've got is an internet connection, a 4GB flash drive with Flow OS installed (which I am currently using but can wipe if need be), and a working laptop that I can borrow. What should I do?

• Updating Applications in a Corporate Environment

  I am very new to this subject and was hoping someone could shed some light on it. I am working on creating a corporate network that will obviously have multiple servers and multiple workstations. Let's say a new version of Adobe Flash comes out. I would think that you would want to test this update in a test environment before "pushing it out" to the servers and workstations. How do you guys go about controlling, testing and then pushing the application updates out? (i am not talking about windows updates). Do you use a 3rd party sysadmin tool? Home grown software? Any info will greatly be appreciated :)

• SSH Tunnel doesn't work in China

  Last year I was working in China for a few months. I never bothered setting up a real VPN, but just created a SSH tunnel, and changed my browsers proxy settings to connect through it. Everything worked great (except flash of course) but that was fine. However, now I'm back in China but I'm having problems with this approach. I do the same thing as last time, and according to https://ipcheckit.com/ my IP address is indeed the IP of my (private) server in the US, and I'm logging in to my server using a fingerprint I created long before going to China so no MITM should be possible. Furthermore the certificate from ipcheckit.com is from GeoTrust - so everything should be OK However, I still can't access sites which are blocked in China. Any idea how this could be possible?

  I have a FreeBSD machine that I have to copy everything off the drive. The fielsystem is UFS and not readable by any other operating system. (great...) I have a USB flash drive (FAT32) I need to copy everything to from the SATA in the bsd machine. I looked up cp commands, and got it to partially work, but it seems to copy to the wrong directory. I cannot find out the "name" of the USB drive, and if it can even copy to it.

• Monitor sometimes display weird colors and lines when opening a website that contains a video

  This happens 1/50 times when I open a website that contains a video. I don't know if it happens when I open a flash video, but I am sure it has happened when I've opened a HTML5 video. When it happens I have about 2-3 seconds to press Alt + F4 (to close my browser). If I do it in time the screen will get back to normal. If I wait too long to press Alt + F4, maybe 3+ seconds, my screen won't get back to normal when I press Alt + F4. However, when I get stuck in the weird screen I can do all types of things on the computer. the whole computer does not freeze, because if I for example press Win + L I will hear the Windows logout sound. • Do memory cards have any max file size limitation?

  I am not sure where to ask this question, so perhaps it is physical limitation. I have a 8 GB flash micro SD memory card. When I copy any file size of up to few gigabytes, copying happens normally. But if I am trying to copy file over 4 GB file, then the system tells me like insufficient memory on card, although 8 GB is available. So perhaps only 32 bit address is used for keeping size of file in micro SD card, or is my micro SD defective?

  I'd like to document changes I made to my computer (running MacOS 10.6.8) to be able to identify the sources of eventual problems. Mostly I install updates when a software notifies me about a newer version and offers me a dialog to download and install the update. Currently I'm documenting those updates "by hand" by noting in a text file, when I have e. g. installed a Flash-Player update or updated another 3rd party software ... I wonder if I could achieve that easier and semi-automatically by parsing system logfiles for certain texts like "install" and that way directly get the relevant information: what has been installed (Software and version) when has been installed where has it been installed/what has changed Is there a way to extract such information by a script from the existing logfiles?

• Why does everybody have the same MAC address as me?

  I just bought some consumer-grade McCheap PCI-E NICs (and this was a bad idea). They both have the same MAC address. When I google it, it seems like every card of that company has the same address: 00:50:43:00:45:3e. Shouldn't they be unique? According to lspci it's a Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 20). Is there a way to permanently flash a new address?

  I'm trying to understand what an MBR is. I know it is used to boot the device, like a compact flash card. If you had five 1GB CF card from SanDisk for a camera, would there be any reason for the manufacturer to have different MBRs? It seems like to me, if for some reason one CF card wouldn't boot, you could copy the MBR from a working CF card and write it to the non-working CF card. Would this MBR for a SanDisk card work on the same size Western Digital card for the same use? Thanks!

  I was wondering which browser is the most secure today, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Safari on a Windows machine with the user running as a Power User/Administrator account. This is not a question about which browser is the best because its the most usable, but more of a question if asked for security, which browser is the most secure given an everyday user's experience (JavaScript, Flash, Ads, etc). Also, would the choice for most secure change if the user was running as a restricted user?   apache dont send me mp3 header even when use direct address to the file, it means i can play it with flash audio players on my web pages, but when i tried to download from direct address on my server i got "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset" or sometimes gives me a file with mp3 extension that has just 13B files-size, and when i open that file in gedit/notepad there is just: <html></html> i dont have any problem with php files and images, but mp3 files never be send to browser for download or play. i added this code to httpd.conf: AddType audio/mpeg .mp3 but there is not any difference!! thanks in advance

The company edit softwares for E-learning so there are lots of data like videos, flash and compressed (zip). This is some inventory of the servers: OS: Debian, 2 redhat, apache, php/mysql, sendMail/Dovecot, webmin with virtualmin template to create dynamically the web sites because there is no sysadmin ... The future provider will be responsible of to secure, update and create the virtual machines (outsourcing) and with a RedHat OS's. So i want that you help me to choose a virtualisation technologie (for the i prefer KVM of Redhat RHEV, VMWare is expensive), how evaluate the hardware needs (this for evolution of 4 or 5 years) and to elaborate a good planing to don't forget any think. • Unable to read USB External HD after aborted back up

  I have two PC laptops. On one of the two PC's (Win 7) I Aborted a back up and ejected the drive. Now that same pc wants to format the drive. I plugged the drive into the other pc (Win XP) and that one reads the drive and all data stored. Why does one want to format the drive and the other does not? .... My apologies for not being clearer with my original question and thanks for the responses, so; The drive is not a flash stick, its an external WD Hard drive plugged in via the USB. The two tips provided did not resolve the issue. Strangely, the pc with win XP can read the drive but the pc that the HD was plugged into when the backup was aborted still wants to format the drive. • New Servers Active Directory and Exchange

  I have 3 Dell PowerEdge server, each with 2 quad-core processors. I am going to bring this office out of the stone-age network (P2P, share files on a flash drive, emails through Google, etc) and set up Active Directory and Exchange 2013. Our needs are not that great at the moment - our staff consists of approximately 40 people, and our network may eventually be managed by an external company. We need only one domain for our emails (though we may serve emails for a few other partners domains as well). I was thinking of setting something up like this: Server 1: Primary DC. Active Directory and Exchange on separate virtual machines. Server 2: Redundant of server 1. Server 3: Shared resources, storage, backups, etc. How would you utilize 3 servers for an Active Directory / Exchange setup for a small/medium office? We do have plans to grow, so my solution must be scalable, though I'm not sure that I want to split permissions, though I'd consider it if that was something that could be changed on down the road.

• Can you downmix Windows 7 sound to mono?

  I need my Windows 7 64 bit machine to output mono downmixed sound. Downmixed, not just single channel (I'm deaf in one ear). Is there any possibility to force such behavior. I'm looking for a software solution to mix two channels into one. I know that some media players have this functionality, but I'd like the whole system (ie games, flash applications, etc) to produce downmixed audio. • Issue with domain redirection

  I have a flash games website which is hosted at godaddy server. But because of heavy traffic on my site the godaddy server gets down. So I changed the hosting to Midphase server. The strange thing is i have created new name servers and new database in my mid phase server but still the web site is coming from the godaddy server. When i do any modifications from the godaddy ftp i am getting the modifications but when i do any modifications in the mid phase server. No changes are happening. One strange thing is the who.is is showing the new name servers and new server details but not getting the new servers contents. Can anyone help me in this regard?

  Basically I want to create a file which will automatically install a bunch of files without having to manually install each of them (i.e. Flash, Adobe Reader, MS Office, etc.). I'm guessing the easiest way to do this would be to create a batch file but I don't have much experience with the scripting side of things. I remember seeing a website at one point that would do this sort of thing for you but I'm not sure if that could be used offline or not. Thanks in advance...just looking to make things a bit more streamlined on new builds without the costs associated with imaging software. Thanks!

  I am curious -- when the ShoppyBag virus gets sent to you from a compromised "friend", inside the message is a secret one-pixel IMG unique to your email address --- and when your GMail message pulls up the message and the IMG is loaded from their server and displayed, their server knows you have read the message. At that moment, does it then grab your Gmail address book, the Flash Cookies, and all the Local Shared Objects it can find, i.e. at the instant you READ the message with the ShoppyBag virus, is it already too late? Do you have to Delete it to the Trash , then Delete Forever it , without reading it to be safe?
