• What is lisp used for today and where do you think it's going ?

  Never been a lisp user, so don't take me as too dense while reading this. But what is lisp used for today ? I know there are several variants of the language in existence, at least one which will keep it alive commercially for a while longer (AutoLisp, VisualLisp - pretty big support from Autodesk) ... but I don't meet everyday people using it. So if you can shed some light on the matter - what is it's primary target market nowadays ? And what do you believe its future will be ... will it become just another support language in few apps, or is it going somewhere ? Also, apart from "an editor whose name shall not be spoken" what other apps keep it as a support language ?

  Currently I can program in: C#, C++, JAVA and PHP. The next summer, I intend to start learning a new language. Can you help me suggesting what must I start reading about? I heard about Perl, Python and Lisp.. but I do not know if any of them will worth more than what I already got in my other languages.. • accessing required modules from other modules

  I have a bare-bone express application, exactly the one that is created with the express command. I have installed socket.io and attached it to my server, like this: var app = express(), server = http.createServer(app), io = io.listen(server); server.listen(8000); Now, I also have the routes files, which is called like this: app.get('/', routes.index); Inside this module I have the following function: exports.index = function(req, res){ socket.emit('news', { message: "foo" }); }; This obviously leads to a 500 reference error, because the routes file is an exportable module, and obviously has no idea what the socket is, as it is located in the app.js file. Is there a way I can access this socket object from this, or any other file? Please note that it is attached to the express generated app. extra: what about getting/setting session data? • Better product to develop for, iPad or Android based tablet in a purely business related application

  Hey guys Just wondering what you'd suggest as the best platform for developing a business application for a tablet device. The application needs to be multitouch, have access to a maps API, a database on the device. It will not be going on sale in the app store or Androids market, it is purely for specific business task and not for the general consumer. Obviously the options seem to be iPhone OS and the iPad or Android and an Android tablet device. The form factor for the end product requires something in the region of 8 inch+ screen and enough processing power to provide a good experience for the end user. Any help would be much appreciated. • Turn Bluetooth On and Off in Andriod 1.5 (SDK level 3)?

  There are tons of pay and free bluetooth toggles on the market that work with Android 1.5 (SDK level 3). The problem is there is no visible API for this! Does anyone have any working code snippits on how to enable and disable bluetooth that works on Android 1.5? I assume you must have to use some kind of reflection for it. There are some examples over on anddev.org, but they only work with Android 1.1 or lower. This is for Android 1.5 (SDK level 3) and not Android 2.0 or greater. In Android 2.0 or later Google added easy to use APIs.

Looks like hibernate parse my convert exp as parameter. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

• Problems crossing the boundary between protected greasemonkey execution space and the unsafeWindow l

  Hi guys. Here is my problem: I've registered some callbacks into a Yahoo event driven webpage (betfair.com market views) and am trapping the betsPlaced events with a handler. So far so simple. Next stage is to get the event back into greasemonkey land, and while I know that from greasemoney space you can call unsafeWindow.stuff, there is no reverse operation (by design). So if I want to send the contents of the event over, say, a cometd queue, my carefully set up jquery, greasemonkey, YUI2, betfair environment fails by telling me that unsafeWindow processes cant call GM_ajax stuff. This is obviously safe and sane, but it basically stops me doing what I want to do. Has anyone tried doing this (ignore the cometd stuff, just general ajax calls) and succeeded? I've had a look at pages like this: http://wiki.greasespot.net/0.7.20080121.0%2B_compatibility but it doesnt appear to work for all the calls.

• Where can I get free real-time stock data?

  Does anyone know of a way to obtain free real-time stock data or near real-time stock data? I'd like to do this since I'm interested in the financial market, not for use in investment applications which is why I'm looking for something free. I've tried the Perl module Finance::YahooQuote but some of the fields such as last trade time appear to be broken. I've looked at the historical data but it doesn't fit my needs since I'd like to monitor the movements of the markets and stocks during the trading day not just open and close. I've also looked at http://www.opentick.com but they aren’t accepting new accounts and I can't find a timeline for when their network upgrade will be complete.

• So - vuvuzelas. any programming equivalents ?? [closed]

  Hi All, I'm sure we've all been exposed over the past few days to the delights of the vuvuzela (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8738604.stm). In an attempt to mask the waspish 'parp' from our living rooms, tv sound engineers are devising all sorts of filters to try and 'calm' the abhoration :). some tho say that it simply 'adds to the ambience' and that masking it out would be a denial of its 'additive' character. Now, on a programming related front, have you had to mask any extraneous 'noise' in a piece of work that you've picked up from someone else (or perhaps even your own!!)?? If so how 'inspired' was your remedy and how did you creatively 'reverse' it out once the noise had subsided and/or the pitch changed. :) tongue firmly in cheek... jim

  I was unable to activate Safari Reader in a local HTML file, so I cannot give you a running example but only describe my problem: The markup of my blog posts is basically this: <div class="post"> <div class="post-header">Hello, World</div> <div class="post-body"> <p>Look at this picture:</p> <p><img src="http://37prime.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/safari_icon.png"/></p> <p>Isn't that a nice picture?</p> </div> </div> This looks as expected in all browsers, including Safari. In Safari Reader however, the third paragraph "Isn't that a nice picture?" is floating around the image, instead of being on a paragraph of it's own. Has anybody experienced a similar problem?

  I have a UIScrollview with a UITableview subview. The UIScrollview scrolls the UITableView horizontally. The UITable view naturally scrolls up and down. If a user places their finger on the UitableView, and moves (swipes) horizontally, The delegate method below is invoked (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)scrollView with scrollView isEqual theUIScrollView If the user lifts their finger and places it back down on the UITableView and moves in a vertical direction The delegate method below is invoked (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)scrollView with scrollView isEqual = theUITable If however the user places their finger and moves in a horizontally (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)scrollView with scrollView isEqual theUIScrollView If the user then moves the finger (without lifting it) in a vertical direction. delegate method scrollViewDidScroll is not invoked at all. (The reverse is true too.) I note that the "Pulse News" app seems to behave in the above manner.. Ultimately I want to figure out how to get the UITableView and UIScrollview moving in a "unidirectional" fashion, with one finger kept on the screen. Thanks...

• Get a list of Android phone contacts only on Eclair and above?

  I want to show the user a flattened pick list of all their contacts phone numbers and it must work from versions 1.6 up. I have read the related questions on SO and the Android documentation for Eclair (http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/contacts.html#legacy). The problem is, even splitting my code into a factory class and specific implementations does not work for me because using Contacts.CONTENT_URI only shows contacts not individual numbers. What I need is this for version 1.6 Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, Phones.CONTENT_URI); startActivityForResult(intent, REQUEST_PICK_CONTACT); And the equivalent for 2.0 and above. Even if I get their example to work, by building against the 2.1 API am I not stopping my app being visible on the Market to users with earlier versions of the OS? I can't launch it against a 1.6 emulator, for example.

• jquery - lose click() event after ajax call???

  At the following webpage liamharding.com/pgi.php I have an option panel on the left side of the page which opens and closes upon clicking the panels 'arrow', this works fine until you select a market (for testing use one of the 'Random Walk' markets and click 'Show/Refesh Graphs'), this then makes an ajax call using get_graph(forexName, myCount, divIsNew) function. Once this call is completed a graph(s) is displayed and then my options panels click() event does not work? The ajax call returns the data in a variable ajax_data, the problem happens when I perform the following code var jq_ajax_data = $("<div/>").html(ajax_data); . I need to wrap it in a so I can extract data from it using jQuery. If this line of code is commented out the click() event works fine ?? Hope somebody can help, I have spent a lot of time but cant find what the problem is.

• Maintaining sort order of database table rows

  Say I have at database table containing information about a news article in each row. The table has an integer "sort" column to dictate the order in which the articles are to be presented on a web site. How do I best implement and maintain this sort order. The problem I want to avoid is having the the articles numbered 1,2,3,4,..,100 and when article number 50 suddenly becomes interesting it gets its sort number set to 1 and then all articles between them must have their sort number increased by one. Sure, setting initial sort numbers to 100,200,300,400 etc. leaves some space for moving around but at some point it will break. Is there a correct way to do this, maybe a completely different approach? Added-1: All article titles are shown in a list linking to the contents, so yes all sorted items are show at once. Added-2: An item is not necessarily moved to the top of the list; any item can be placed anywhere in the ordered list.

  i've found a lot of news ticker plugins that kinda do what i need, but not exactly. i want to do exactly what twitter.com does on their home page with the "Top Tweets". facebook also does this on their feed. basically whenever i have a new item i want all the LIs to scroll down, make room for the new LI on top, and fade it in. the newsticker plugins i've seen all scroll through a set amount of LIs, but i want to dynamically add a new one...

• Screen capture during testing

  This is an application for reviewing performance tests. Simple in concept, tricky to describe. Picture: 1) Recording interactions with a WPF program so the inputs can be played back. 2) Playing the inputs back while doing a continuous screen capture. 3) Capturing wall time as well as continuous CPU percentages during playback. 4) Repeating steps (2) and (3) lots of times. 5) Writing the relevant stuff out to files/db. 6) Reading it and putting it all in a fancy UI for easy review/analysis. The killer for me is (2). I could use some guidance on a good, possibly commercial, screen capture SDK. I would also welcome the news that my whole problem already has a solution. And of course any thoughts on the overall idea would also be great. Thanks. Ed

• "digg" button and encoded url :S

  Hi! I wrote a php site (it's still a prototype) and i placed a "Digg" button. Placing the button was easy but.... Official manual says "url has to be encoded". I did that with urlencode(). After urlencode, my url looks like this: http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mysite.com%2Fen%2Fredirect.php%3Fl%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.othersite.rs%2FNews%2FWorld%2F227040%2FRusia-Airplane-crashed%26N%3DRusia%3A+Airplane+crashed So far, so good but when i want to submit that url to digg, it is recognized as invalid url: http://www.mysite.com/en/redirect.php?l=http://www.othersite.rs/News/World/227040/Rusia-Airplane-crashed&N=Rusia:+Airplane crashed If i place a "+" between "Airplane" and "crashed" (mere end of a link), then digg recognize it without any problems! Please help, this bizare problem is killing my braincells! P.S. for purpose of this answer urls are changed (nonexisting) because, in original, non-english sites are involved P.S.S. • Android Developers, Are you adding APP 2 SD in a future app release and if so for which applications

  For Android application developers regarding 2.2 and the new App 2 SD feature. Android 2.2 now allows you to have your applications installed onto the SD card instead of using the phones internal memory. Will any of you be adding this feature onto your next release and if so what is your app? I know applications built with the App 2 SD function cannot be used when the SD card is mounted. Maybe 2 versions of each app on the market would work out great for those that would need an app while the phone is mounted. What do you think about this idea? Are you aware of any other negative issues that arise from an application built for this feature?

Now I see that iPhone and Android are both dominating he smartphone market, but also that more and more people are buying iPhones. Which one would be better to start developing for? I currently do not own a Mac but would purchase a Mac Mini if I was to buy an iPhone. Would it be better to buy iPhone and Mac because it will be better in the long run because of the amount of users or Android?

When listing the apps, it fills the list in an automatic process, when reaching or is near to reach the end. My question is: How is that written in iPhone applications.
