• How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Tips to extend battery life for laptops and notebooks 24 answers How do I improve the battery life of my Inspiron 14z under Ubuntu 12.04? This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time.   What is needed to make a GPU fully fed by CPU? Comparing their flops/s is enough? For example, if i could manage to make a very old(pentium-3) CPU with one of Nvidia-Fermi GPU, it would not be able to fed the gpu with data per sec. What is the criteria to fit CPU to GPU exactly when OpenCL or some similar work needed? Of course RAM and BUS will be chosen in a similar way but how exactly? Assume each GPU-core will calculate a sqrt and a division and an adding for 100 times for every itearation. Thanks.

• memtest86+ crashing on server

  we have a few DELL 1950 servers. 1 of this servers has CentOS6.3 and its randomly rebooting so I suspected it was hardware. (no log generated) the other 4 servers do not randomly reboot. We passed memtest86+ on the 5 servers, and on 3 of them memtest86+ crashes (displaying an odd and colorful screen, like if a video card failed) Although I tested old memtest86 (not +), and all servers did not crash. I also tested other RAM testers utilities, no tool failing. have any of you guys experience this? thanks

• If I double my ram on a x86 processor, does that double the ram I can use for each individual process?

  I don't understand how 32-Bit OS's use RAM on a per process basis. I've read the max RAM my x86 processor running a 32-bit OS can use is 2^32 = 4gb; but that's just for one process, right? 3DS Max keeps crashing, but it typically can never use more than 2GB of RAM before it crashes, if I increase my RAM from 4-8GB, would that double how much RAM I can use for each individual process or actually cause no change in my performance? Also would increasing my VRAM and getting a better graphics card increase the extent to which individual programs can preform? Lastly, is there any way to upgrade a 86-bit processor to be able to run a 64-bit OS? I feel like it would be ridiculous to sell modern processors that are capped at 4GB of RAM? Thanks. • How to structure an application which reads UPC barcodes

  I have no previous experience on creating a project for a seller which will use barcode reader. I am trying to put together a small project but I cannot figure out how the pieces should glue together. I will create a sample with Motorola Scanner SDK to read barcodes and from that point, I have couple of questions: How UPC barcodes work in general? AFAIK, a barcode stores the manufacturer and product info but no price data. Should I store price information inside a database which corresponds to barcode data? • Should I buy more RAM for my computer or a better CPU?

  I have recently bought a new laptop, an ASUS N56VJ-S4149H. I bought it to use it in all possible ways I could want, so that would be gaming downloading and streaming movies browsing the web and programming software. So far it has been running great but one thing annoys me a little bit. I frequently play Mount&Blade: Warband, it's a great game and you should check it out. Everything runs smoothly but only when I turn down the 'Texture Detail'. Otherwise it will lag a lot and I can't really play. Now my question is: Is this a problem of not enough RAM? At first I was really sure it was but after thinking about for a while I'm not anymore. My computer only has 4 Gigabytes of RAM and there is still a slot open. So will it improve when I buy another 8 Gigabytes? EDIT: It has an Nvidia GeForce GT 635M inside. and an Intel Core i5 3230M CPU with 2,6 GHz. Help and answers are really appreciated. Thanks to all.

• How to create and maintain patch on Debian package?

  I want to patch on Trac package. I know how to patch and rebuild the package, but there are some things I don't understand very well. My patch is something dangerous and not likely to commit back to the community. So, let me just say, it's a very private patch. But, I want my patch keep working when the Ubuntu packages upgrade. (Should I apt-get source trac and move my patch to the new version of source directory each time the Trac upgrades?) I see there is a patch/ directory (many using quilt I guess) in debian/, but I don't know how to use it? Will debuild automatic apply all patches in the patch/ directory? And what about dpkg-buildpackage? Is there some environ variables to control the selection of patches to apply?

So, I need a way to remove the updates that have been installed since 30th of may 12 for example (or any other date). • Many user stories share the same technical tasks: what to do?

  A little introduction to my case: As part of a bigger product, my team is asked to realize a small IDE for a DSL. The user of this product will be able to make function calls in the code and we are also asked to provide some useful function libraries. The team, together with the PO, put on the wall a certain number of user stories regarding the various libraries for the IDE user. When estimating the first of those stories, the team decided that the function call mechanism would have been an engaging but not completely obvious task, so the estimate for that user story raised up from a simple 3 to a more dangerous 5. Coming to the problem: The team then moved to the user stories regarding the other libraries, actually 10 stories, and added those 2 points of "function call mechanism" thing to each of those user story. This immediately raised up the total points for the product of 20 points! Everyone in the team knows that each user story could be picked up by the PO for the next iteration at any time, so we shouldn't isolate that part in one user story, but those 20 points feel so awfully unrealistic! I've proposed a solution, but I'm absolutely not satisfied: We created a "Design story" and put those annoying 2 points over it. However when we came to realize and demonstrate it to our customers, we were unable to show something really valuable for them about that story! Here the problem is whether we should ignore the principle of having isolated user stories (without any dependency between them). What would you do, or even better what have you done, in situations like this? (a small foot-note: following a suggestion I've moved this question from stackoverflow)

  For a project that is billed by hours, should a freelancer charge the client for the amount of time he/she spends on email/chat correspondence? For example, the client sends an email to the the freelancer, outlining the requirements. Should the freelancer charge the client for the time during which he/she reads the email and writes a reply. The same goes for chat conversations for clarifying the requirements. In particular, if the freelancer's English is not very good, so that he/she spends extra time on understanding what the client wants and explaining him/herself (e.g. copying and pasting into Google Translate), should such time be charged to the client too?

• xubuntu 12.04 restarts after suspend - only from my account

  After installing a clean xubuntu 12.04 I noticed that when I suspend, the computer suspends and turns itself off (you see the lights go off, and a click sound from the HD or fans), but then about 2 seconds later it turns itself back on again... The odd thing is that: It doesn't happen when booting from the liveCD I created another user account. When I log onto this account I can suspend fine. The computer stays off until I press the ON button When I remove my .config folder and it's clean - I can also suspend without problem on my account So it seems that something in my user config is causing this, but I can't work out what it might be. I tried diffing the two .config folders, and also all processes running with one account compared to the other (ps -ef |grep <username>), but couldn't find anything obvious that might be causing this...

• Recommendations for SSD for server and database use?

  SSDs are a new technology and they are constantly improving. A lot of the posts here were posted in 2009 when SSDs where less mature and not as fast. What was recommend back then is probably out of date today because of better options. The SSD is used to hold SQL Server databases. Size is probably 128G. The database is used with a CMS and web server so web pages need to get their data and render as fast as possible. Which modern SSD is recommended for such a use? Is there an SSD better than Intel X-25 E/M in terms of performance/cost? (I am also evaluating cost between : RAM + UPS (semi persistent) vs SSD for same amount of gigabytes. No RAID is involved)

• Installing package + dependancies and removing them all

  I currently use Xubuntu and was considering installing/trying GNOME Shell or Cinnamon by installing their respective metapackage. However, doing so would result in a massive number of dependencies being installed which would be almost impossible to remove individually at a later date if I decided I didn't like it. I wonder, therefore, if there is a way that I can track which packages Synaptic automatically downloads as part of the process and create a script of some sort to remove them all as well. I could then rest assured that if I don't like any of my new desktop environments, I can remove them in full without leaving a load of other applications and libraries lying around.   This answer says: The base of the operating system, Debian, comes in three versions: Stable, Testing and Unstable. Normally, Ubuntu is based on Testing; the LTS releases are based on Stable. That cannot be true then for 12.04 because Debian Stable (Squeeze) is almost going to be old-stable, and it's obvious that the kernel versions in 12.04, packages, etc. cannot have come from Debian Squeeze. So then what other Debian Stable is there for Precise to be based on?

• Uninstall broken package

  Times ago I have installed Linux mint stuff on my Ubuntu 11.10 (now 12.04). I accidentally removed some files manually ( they were under /usr/share.). Now it is impossible to remove the related deb packages, and synaptic report various errors. How can remove them bypassing errors? It is possible view the installed files in synaptic and remove them manually, but is tedious...also remain the problem to remove the files entry from the apt database. Any suggestion?

• Ram not working in dual dynamic paging mode

  My motherboard is Intel D865GVHZ I m using 512 mb ram and recently i purchased a 512 mb ram of same company same speed(333) and same manufacturer. but my pc is not booting in dual dynamic paging mode . It is not at all booting and the screen freezes on windows logo screen at start up. i checked installing individual rams one by one and the pc is working with either of the ram installed individually. But wen i install both the pc is not working. One more point i found is my one ram has 8 chips on both sides while the other ram has 4 chips on both sides. • Programming vs Planning

  Recently I have been tasked with more High level planning assignments due to the lead developer of my team leaving. I hate long term planning. My brain just doesn't naturally seem wired for it and I am not interested enough in it to spend the time to learn it (it is hard enough to keep up with the programming side of the picture). Can I still be a good programmer without being a high level planer too? Are you expected to be good at planning out the entire product and picking a date, as part of being a senior programmer. Is it possible to be a good programmer and not a high level planner?

• Failing package manager?

  I am trying to download kcachegrind after a reinstallation of my OS. But I keep getting "dependency" failures. I have tried going through the Ubuntu software manager (which worked perfectly before...) and Synaptic. With synaptic, I got specific package failures and when I searched for the packages I got more package dependencies. After the 5th time of this I gave up because there must be something else going on. Please help?
