• USB connection issue

  Currently Im facing an issue when Im trying to connect any usb flash drive to my pc. ok, below is what happens to me: 1) I can connect usb keyboard and mouse without any issue. 2) however when i connect usb flash drive, there are 2 situations that are occuring randomly a) there is no usb drive mount in my computer, when device manager is checked, it shows error code 10, but is shown in disk management. b) my computer will have usb drive mounted, but when I click on it, it is empty. on right click the properties, the disk space show 0. (there are files within the usb) what i have done is: 1) run CCleaner to repair the registry, restart and try, but still not working. 2) uninstall the drive in device manager, restart and try, but still not working. 3) tried the port that connects mouse and keyboard, but does not work. anyone who experienced these problems before please guide me. any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated. • How to bypass Forefront TMG for downloading from Adobe Cloud

  I hope that this question has not been asked as I've spent a couple of days googling around trying to find a solution. I have one computer that needs to download from Adobe Cloud to install applications like Photoshop etc... The issue I'm having is that Adobe uses a download manager program (AdobeApplicationManager.exe) that just keeps incrementing the time left on the download of any app like Photoshop. Is there a way to allow just the download manager from that one computer to bypass any filtering settings in Forefront TMG 2010? I have very little knowledge of servers / ISA servers / Forefront TMG and have been thrown into this position by luck I guess. Any help with this would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu 11.04 hangs at "checking battery state" while booting

  When I try to boot Ubuntu 11.04, it just hangs when it gets to checking battery state. I know this issue is usually related to graphic drivers, but it worked like a charm for months now. Last time I was on Ubuntu I updated my system with the update manager, so maybe an update caused it. Anyway, I really need Ubuntu. I'm in the middle of work on a website and I have a deadline, so I need some help over here. Thanks. p.s. I tried reinstalling gnome-power-manager. Didn't work. And I'm not on a laptop.

• Intuitive view of what's using the hard drive so much on Windows 7?

  Sometimes my hard drive usage is near 100%, and I have no idea what is causing it. Are there any utilities that can help diagnose excessive hard drive usage and have as intuitive of an interface as Task Manager's Processes tab, which I can sort by CPU usage? I am aware of using procmon, of adding columns to Task Manager's Processes tab like I/O Read Bytes and I/O Write Bytes, and using Resource Monitor's Disk tab. Too often, these don't give me useful information or clearly identify a single process that is hogging the disk.

• Font display issue (Mac OS X)?

  I used a font manager on Mac OS X, for additional fonts in my graphic design projects without installing them to the fonts folder (I think that's how it works) - using Font Book and Font Explorer X Version 1.2.3 on OS X 10.6. Most fonts work fine, but Interstate has a problem: Interstate Regular is installed, but for some reason it's probably not seeing it; it's seeing all the Bold and Condensed versions fine. In the above image, it displays the second font as Interstate Regular, but it isn't that font... why? Also, how do I reset the system fonts folder back to the default-installed fonts (I think it's in the library folder) if worst comes to worst, and is using a font manager on Mac or Windows a good idea? I don't want to wreck my system, fairly new to using Mac, especially OS X, so any help would be gratefully accepted.

• Opening NBF backup file?

  I have a backup file from before i reinstalled windows but am unable to open it because the file is a NBF. It was created with Acer Backup Manager which is a proprietary version of NTI's backup software. is there any way to open this? I have tried using NTI Backup Now! 4.x but it says the file is invalid. Acer Backup Manager will only let me restore the ENTIRE image (not what I want), and many hours of googling have left me empty handed.

• Do I need to recompile PHP to make use of CURL API?

  I have both Apache and PHP set up manually, albeit the latter without CURL. There is this jungle of instructions and explanations on extensions for PHP. I have a very straightforward question - what do I need to do to enable CURL in a more dynamic way. I resent the idea of static linking, in fact I hate and avoid static linking like the plague. Is it possible to have my Apache and PHP understand that there is CURL in town? I can compile CURL if necessary. Package management may be out of the question, because I built PHP myself - I am on Ubuntu, and it does not provide PHP without Suhosin and a a whole lot of time, so I removed it and built PHP myself. The whole slew of related questions simply propse installing "php5-curl" package, which is exactly one thing I CANNOT do since it installs it in a completely unrelated directory, which my PHP does not even seem to bother linking to.

• Is it safe to expect Sun Java 6 to supported for the life of RHEL 6?

  I'm in the planning stages of a java application that we're targeting for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. Unfortunately, we're stuck at RHEL 6.1 which does not ship the java-1.7.0-oracle package set (they were added in 6.3) and I don't really have any control over when we will be upgraded to the more recent version. I don't have any specific technical requirements to use Java 7, but Java 6 is going to hit public EOL in February 2013. Am I safe to assume that since Red Hat (and subsequently Oracle with its Oracle Unbreakable Linux) has shipped a copy of Java 6 in the java-1.6.0-sun package, it will support it for the entire 10 year support life of RHEL6?

• Worker processes not starting in IIS 7.5. What should I check?

  I have a Windows 7 machine (Windows version 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601) with IIS installed. At some point the installation appears to have become 'corrupted' in some way, as any requests are now met with the message: Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. In IIS manager IIS is started and the app pool I am using reports itself as 'Started', yet there is no w3wp.exe process listed in the process list in task manager (I am a local admin and have clicked the 'Show processes from all users' button. I have enabled logging for the web site (at default location of %SystemDrive%\inetpub\logs\LogFiles), but this folder is empty. I am assuming that this log output is written by w3wp.exe as it handles requests (no w3wp.exe, no log file?). Presumably there is another layer of request handling that is responsible for starting the worker processes, does thsi layer have log files I can check, and/or can I uninstall/re-install that layer?   I have a HP laptop. I upgraded to windows 7 ultimate from home basic. Now I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 8 but when I do I get a message saying not enough system partition. So I opened the disk manager and increased the size of system reserved partition and it was of no use I still got the same error. Then I unfortunately deleted the 100MB system reserved partition by right clicking it and clicking format in the disk manager! Now I am not able to boot any CD's from the startup including OS and recovery CD. Whenever I press esc it always goes to the login screen and it doesn't say anything about the boot from CD option. Now I could not even use my recovery CD. I have 3 questions: Is it necesseary to create a system reserved partition if so how to create it? How to use my recovery cd How to install win 8

• refresh windows network performance counters in command line

  I am testing a USB device connected to a windows PC. When the device is connected then windows has another network interface going through the device. I need to get the bytes transffered for that specific interface, basically I need the data shown in the networking tab in the task manager for my interface adapter. I found this question which helped to get this info: ms windows network activity bytes send and receive in command line However I have a problem when I run multiple tests - each time I disconnect and connect the device there's another line for the interface, like below.   Yesterday I installed .Net Framework 4 as it was required by Liquid XML Studio, but just after installing it, My SQL Server Management Studio stopped working. As soon as open the IDE I get package microsoft sql management studio package failed to load I tried pretty much all the solution posted on the internet but could not get it working, today when I removed the .Net Framework 4, SQL server management studio started working again. Then just to test, I installed the .Net Framework 4 back ... and I started getting the same problem in management studio. I want both on my machine ! how can i do it ? PS : OS is Windows 7

  I am in a similar situation as question Can I fine-tune my screen brightness? . For me, Thinkpad T420s and Ubuntu Studio 11.10. The brightness keys work fine but the increments are too large. I have the /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 and I can see the value of actual_brightness changing as I use the brightness keys - it changes between values 0,3,6,9,12,15. None of the listed answers for fine control works here, as follows: As the root user I can echo integers to brightness in the above folder. As an ordinary user I cannot. I do not have /usr/sbin/gnome-power-backlight-helper (because I'm using xfce perhaps?), and not sure what package it's from or if installing such a package would make sense since it's not what's currently managing the backlight. How can it be done, please?

• Why does my CPU Usage reach 100% too often?

  I'm using a dual-core processor and often see my CPU usage reaches 100%. I realize this may happen if I'm running too much applications, so when I know the computer starts to run slowly, I start to close my applications. I usually run 4-5 applications simultaneously. Usually those are: web browser (Google Chrome), Adobe Photoshop, Notepad++, XAMPP, and Windows Task Manager. Usually I close tabs in my Chrome first, because I often browse the net with about 20 tabs/4 windows open, so I presume that would take much memory (bad habit, I know). But even after closing Chrome's tabs or closing other applications, my CPU Usage often stays at high percentage - 72% at best, 100% at worst. I check the Processes tab on Windows Task Manager and usually found the System, System Idle Process, or services.exe taking the highest CPU process (could reach 60). Why is this happening? And is there any solution? EDIT I have T2250 @ 1,73 Ghz and 2.5 GB RAM

  Hi, recently I've purchased a VPS package which runs Ubuntu 9.04. I'm going to be using it as a general purpose server with a web server, git server, etc. Now, the package is fairly cheap, but in exchange in there's little to no auxiliary functionality, including an absence of nameservers. So, given that I have a domain name and full root access to the VPS, is it possible to configure a nameserver on the VPS for the VPS? That is, I want to link my domain name to my server without the need for an additional server. Thanks

• Alien: .rpm -> .deb | Compability / Built per system?

  At the moment I'm playing a bit with alien (for OpenVZ packages on Debian) and was wondering myself about one question for which I was not able to find an answer anywhere. Therefor I thought it might be smart to ask here :) The question is... If I convert a .rpm to .deb on a system, how compatible is this .deb package? What do I mean? Will the .deb be working on other systems as well or is it per-system, e.g. that on every system the .deb package will be little different? That i386 and x86_64 are different is clear, so this doesn't need to be answered :) Examples that would be nice to know are for example: .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (compatible?) .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Debian 5 64-bit (compatible?) etc. Thanks anyone reading this / helping me!   I have a windows 2k8 machine that generated almost 40,000 WinEventLog:System events in the period of about 20 minutes. The breakdown of these events by eventcode was approximately: 4373 46% 4371 46% 4383 7% 4372 1% Microsoft-Windows-Servicing seemed to go crazy for a short time.... looking at updates, changing the state of updates etc. What could have caused this? UPDATE: Many of the events seem to come in pairs of: Windows Servicing started a process of changing package KBfoobar state from Installed(Installed) to Installed(Installed) and Windows Servicing successfully set package KBfoobar state to Installed(Intstalled)

• Where to set java heap options (e.g. -Xmx) for Tomcat 6 under Ubuntu 9.04?

  I'm running Tomcat using the tomcat6 package from Ubuntu 9.04, which makes a daemon out of Tomcat using jsvc. I'd like to know the proper way to set Java heap options like -Xmx for Tomcat. I'd like to put the configuration wherever is most stylistically correct, and wherever is least likely to be overwritten by Ubuntu package updates. The options I see right now: Hard-code them somewhere in /etc/init.d/tomcat6. Hard-code them somewhere in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/catalina.sh. Create a line in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/startup.sh to set CATALINA_OPTS to have the desired flags, and then export CATALINA_OPTS as an environment variable. (This looks like it will get picked up by catalina.sh.) The last option sounds like the best one, and it's advocated (without explanation of why) at http://serverfault.com/questions/121038/increasing-javas-heapspace-in-tomcat-startup-script. But I wanted to get a second opinion. Anyone want to confirm that there isn't a better way?

• Wrong version of php used be IIS

  Long ago I installed php5.2 using a installer on IIS. Recently I installed PHP Manager and upgraded to php5.3 simly by unzipping the downloaded file and then used the "Register new php version" in PHP Manager. I did this for the global scope for all sites. This works OK. Once in a blue moon errors are written to the php5.2 errorlog even though that verion is not used anymore. The errors are typical 5.3 specfic functions that are not supported in 5.2. How can it be? Can I safely uninstall php5.2 using the uninstaller (i think it added some stuff to the env paths)?

The little blurb in that announcement intrigued me so I went to the OpenSVC website and found this: OpenSVC is a 'service' manager, as in clustered service manager, designed for real-world heterogeneous datacenters and large-scale operations orchestrator (disaster recovery, for example). Services are collections of resources (virtual machine, ip, disk groups, filesystems, file synchronizations, and application launchers). Services can be started, stopped and queried for status, providing a consistent command set for wildly different service integration types. Service configurations, status and logs are pushed to a central database coupled to a web front-end (collector). Services can be administered using the stand-alone GPLv2 software stack deployed on the nodes (nodeware), or through the web-front end. Plus some UML-type graphics. Which is all neat, but I still don't understand: what does it do? Am I just being dense? What's the use case for this system?

• Installing ethernet controller driver after clean windows XP install

  I've been having trouble getting internet access through an ethernet connection since doing a fresh install of windows XP. It appears that I'm missing the driver for the ethernet controller. Looking in 'device manager' under the network adapters section there's an apparently working '1394 Net Adaptor' but under unknown devices there's the question-marked ethernet controller, which I believe is what I want the driver for. I found an old cd that contains the driver for it (Realtek 8139 or some 81xx). There's no setup tool, but only 3 files (a .cat file, .inf file and .sys file). I've tried right-clicking on the .inf file and using 'install' and also tried just copying the .sys file into the system32/drivers folder but neither have got me anywhere after restarting. The ethernet controller is still listed in 'unknown devices'. EDIT: I've also tried updating the driver in the device manager, pointing it at the folder containing the driver, but this hasn't worked either. Any ideas? Thanks

• How do I add an Approver to SharePoint 2010?

  I am still new to SharePoint and am learning so much, but have came in to a few hic-ups and here is one. I want to add an approver to SharePoint 2010 who has FULL CONTROL. My manager requested that I find out where the approval request are going and redirect them to him. (I have no idea where or how to find this out). Is this possible to do on the Central Administration or must I go into each site/subsite and set him to be the approver this way? Googled and the site was showing me how to approve workflows or how to create approvals, my other resources didn't give much help either. So far I had gone into a few individual sites and set my manager and I up as approvers with full control, but am uncertain if this is the correct procedure or if there is a better way to do this. For example, have the lower levels inherit from the higher level - set security at the highest level and cascade to the child levels. Thank You.

• Can't connect to IIS7 on one of my machines

  I have 2 computers, both running Win7 Professional x64. Computer "A" (192.168.0.10) is my work machine, it contains my tools etc. Computer "B" (192.168.0.15) is supposed to be my build server / web server for my projects I've installed IIS on "B", and installed IIS7 remote manager on "A". I'm trying to connect from A's IIS7 Manager to B's IIS but I fail. I have little knowledge of IIS, and I feel that's the main reason. I can ping B from A and get positive results so the machines do see each other. A and B are in the same workgroup but not in a domain (if that matters) - they're in my home network. What do I need to do to "see" B's IIS?
