• Admin mode on Procurve Switches

  Not being a network expert, I spent some time configuring my network, until I found my mistake: On my HP ProCurve Switch 1810G, I thought that "Admin mode" means whether the administrative interface can be accessed from this port. Well, it means whether the port is enabled or not. Extract from the help function: Admin Mode - Select to enable the port-control administration state. Click to enable and have the port participate in the network.(Default : Enabled ) Well, of course I didn't read the help, because I didn't doubt it's for the adminsitrative interface and suspected an error somewhere else. Anyway, I am wondering if that is a commonly used term for enabling/disabling ports or if HP just wanted to make my life harder? I can't understand why this option isn't just called "Enable port"!? • Public folder not visible from front end Exchange 2003 Server

  I have a public folder that does not receive emails when the emails are sent via the Front-End Exchange Servers. When I go into the System Manager on the Front-End I don't see this particular public folder listed under the Public Folders. However, I do see it listed from the Front-End server. I see the emails that are not making it to the public folder listed in the local delivery queue on the front end server and they are in a retry state. Does anyone know how I might troubleshoot this?

My question is if selinux is in permissive mode will selinuxtype=targeted enforce any polices? if not how did it solve the problem with apache as selinux was already in permissive mode?

• Navigation keys on numeric keypad randomly stop working

  Shortly after a restart, the arrow and navigation (Home, End...) keys on my numeric keypad will randomly stop working, and -- regardless of the state of the NumLock -- return only numbers. I notice this the most in browser applications (like this edit box) but the same effect is true on the command line and in desktop applications like Word. I swapped keyboards and now use a Microsoft keyboard (both are USB keyboards) but the same behavior persists. I also tried a clean boot to clean out startup programs but this made no difference. The separate arrow keys and navigation keys between the QWERTY keys and the numeric keypad work fine, but my strong preference (dating back to DOS and MS Flight Simulator) is to use the navigation keys in the numeric keypad.

  I tried to start Routing and Remote Access Service but I've got an error says the dependency service or group failed to start then I tried to start Remote Access Connection Manager (one of RRAS's dependencies) and the error way same. then I tried to start The Secure Socket Tuning Protocol Service but there was an error says that the the service started then stopped! the errors form event log is here: The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service service which failed to start because of the following error: The operation completed successfully. The Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service service entered the stopped state.   I've created a kickstart script to install CentOS 5.5 (32bit) in a fully automated way. The DNS/DHCP setup correctly gives the system the right hostname in both the forward and reverse lookups. dig node4.mydomain.com. +short 10.10.10.64 dig -x 10.10.10.64 +short node4.mydomain.com. In the state the installed system is right after the installation completed is as follows: cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes GATEWAY=10.10.10.1 HOSTNAME=node4.mydomain.com echo ${HOSTNAME} node4.mydomain.com cat /etc/hosts # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 10.10.10.64 node4 My problem is that this automatically generated hosts file is slightly different from the way I want it (or better: the way Hadoop wants it). The last line should look like this: 10.10.10.64 node4.mydomain.com node4 What do I modify where to fix this? Thanks.

• Notebook fan spinning at max after trying Linux

  I have a Thinkpad T420 (4178-BSG) I use with Windows. The fan (cpu) was always very quiet and I was completely satisfied with it. A few days ago I booted Backtrack Linux from a flashdrive and the fan started to spin at maximum and was very loud. The problem is that this state persists. When I start the Thinkpad and boot Windows as usual the fan start spining at max and never stops. It drives me mad. It looks like somehow the Linux change some settings and I have to suffer. I tried reseting BIOS, updating BIOS, nothing helpes. I even removed the keyboard, looked at the fan but there is no dust.

• UAC prompt won't allow non-administrator to access IIS 7 Manager.

  The IIS 7 Manager seems to throw up a UAC prompt requiring administrative elevation as soon as the shortcut is clicked. This makes it impossible for a non-admin to use it. When I first created the user account, I could open IIS 7 Manager, but could not connect. I temporarily made the user account an Admin, then opened IIS 7 Manager again. Now that I've removed user from Admin, every time I open IIS 7 Manager it throws up the UAC prompt, making it impossible to do anything with it as a non-Admin. Is this a bug? Is there a way to reset the settings for this user so that IIS 7 Manager is back in some kind of first-run state?

• Windows 7 Image Restore with a smaller hard drive

  I have a 500 GB drive that I have made a system image of. I would like to move that to a 250 GB drive (because it is a Solid State drive). I have made a Windows 7 Backup Image of my 500 GB drive. I am currently only using 163 GB of that drive. Can I just restore that to the target drive or will the restore be expecting a 500 GB drive? If it is expecting it I can shrink my partition to less that 250 and backup again. But I would rather not if that is not needed. Will the restore realize that it is not using all the space and just take what it needs?

• Recover from running "route -f"

  I was trying to capture localhost traffic with Ethereal, which doesn't work without re-routing localhost traffic to your router gateway. I didn't get the route command quite right, and messed up my routing table. I typed route -f to clear the routing table and rebooted, but when I finished rebooting, the routing table wasn't restored to its original state. I didn't use the -p parameter, so none of my changes should have persisted after a reboot. What can I do to restore the routing table to its default routes?

• Backup Linux Root Partition (Fedora 12)

  I setup my partition scheme to have an extra partition the size of my / partion. I have a separate home directory partition. Essentially, I will be doing things that might make my OS unstable so I'd like to backup the OS state but without bothering my home directory. Can I just backup (maybe with dd?) my root partition to another partition on the HDD? I know to restore it I would have to boot up with a livecd or something and do the reverse procedure. I want this to be as simple and require the least amount of external hardware as possible.

• TLS-SRP ciphersuites support in browsers

  i'm doing some research on how browsers support TLS-SRP (RFC5054). I know that TLS-SRP is implemented in GnuTLS, OpenSSL as of release 1.0.1, Apache mod_gnutls, cURL, TLS Lite and SecureBlackbox. I don't find any fresh source of information, only this from 2011: http://sim.ivi.co/2011/07/compare-tls-cipher-suites-for-web.html I'm testing them manually at the moment, but as far as i know nobody seems to support it. My interest is then in understanding if browsers are planning to support these ciphersuites in the future, apart from the current state. • Gmail firing background tasks in Chrome and Firefox

  I am experiencing a strange problem with Gmail running on Vista and it started when WindowsUpdate last patched my computer. Since then when Gmail is open in either Chrome or Safari the pointer changes to the Working in Background state every couple of seconds. You can imagine how distracting this is. I have never used Gmail in IE before so I loaded it up, Gmail wanted to load the GoogleTalk ActiveX control which I declined. Now Gmail in IE, I'm using version 8, didn't fire these background processes so I'm thinking it has something to do with GoogleTalk. Has anyone experienced this problem? Also does anyone know how to disable GoogleTalk in FireFox of Chrome.

• ApplicationPool in IIS 7.5 crashes with identifty set to NetworkService

  We have a web application running on IIS 7.5 with the identity of the Custom Application Pool set to NetworkService. This was working fine for some days and now the application pool has gone in to a stopped state. Why does the application pool fails to run with identity set to NetworkService. Can any one help us resolving this issue?

• Linux LVM snapshot commit or revert?

  Hi, I'm about to perform an experimental upgrade on my CentOS 5 server. If the upgrade fails, I want to be able to back out the changes to the filesystem. This scenario seems similar to the example in Section 3.8 of the LVM HOWTO for LVM2 read-write snapshots - but the example is rather lacking in actual how-to. 1) How would I commit the changes, merging them back into the original partition? 2) How would I revert the changes, restoring the filesystem back to its original state? Should I assume that I'll need to restart several services, if not outright reboot? 3) Is it possible to snapshot only certain directories on a partition, or is it a partition-wide operation? • SQL Server 2000 need to prevent logons whilst performing a backup for a side by side migration

  I'm looking for a way to prevent logons from occurring in order to take a full backup of a Database to migrate from its current SQL Server 2000 instance to a new SQL 2005 instance. A friend of mine suggested running a script which would put the DB into a rollback state. Not being a DBA my DDL is very poor and running a script that I don't understand may not be the best idea. One option which might be easier is to simply detach and copy, to the new server. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• Is there a way to find what values comes from what file in HAL under Ubuntu?

  I've been playing with multitouch on my Thinkpad and read a few tutorials on how to setup it. One of them mentioned /usr/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/11-x11-synaptics.fdi, I edited it and enabled SHMConfig through it. Later I found out about /etc/hal/policy/ directory and put some customization for my touchpad there as well in separate fdi file. But now it looks like touchpad doesn't care about my customizations. I have gsynaptec installed and can configure it though GUI, I can configure it with synclient but I can't set any values through fdi files. I even turned off SHMConfig, reverting 11-x11-synaptics,fdi file to it's original state but it seems like SHMConfig still enabled, otherwise I wouldn't be able to configure properties in runtime. So, I was thinking, maybe there's additional hal files I don't know about. How can I find them, particularly ones responsible for turning SHMConfig on?

• SSL FTP fails on Windows 7 but not Windows XP clients

  We currently use a free SSL-FTP client called Move-It-Freely to transmit data from a custom data entry program at over forty facilities scattered around the state to our central server. Under XP, it works flawlessly. Some facilities have upgraded to Windows 7. On these machines, uploads (transfers to us) work, downloads (transfers from us to them) fail. Replacing the Windows 7 machine with an XP machine solves the problem. We have also verified that the network firewall settings have not changed. This problem persists even if Windows firewall is not running. We were able to remote into one of the Windows 7 machines to verify that the Windows firewall was indeed turned off. We cannot replicate the problem on our own Windows 7 machines, and are at a loss of how to fix this feature for our customers. The data contain health-related information, and needs to be encrypted (hence SSL-FTP.) Despite hours spent on Google, we cannot find a solution.

• Re-deploy only the reports on SCOM Management Packs

  I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. I get the following error: Date: 12/24/2010 12:40:35 PM Application: System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Application Version: 6.1.7221.0 Severity: Error Message: Cannot initialize report. Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportServerException: The item '/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Library/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Alert' cannot be found. (rsItemNotFound) at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ServerReport.GetExecutionInfo() at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ServerReport.GetParameters() at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Mom.Internal.UI.Reporting.Parameters.ReportParameterBlock.Initialize(ServerReport serverReport) at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Mom.Internal.UI.Console.ReportForm.SetReportJob(Object sender, ConsoleJobEventArgs args) The report doesn't exist on the reporting services side. how do I re-deploy this reports? • 'Game Show' presentation

  I work at a state university, and every day of summer orientation we have a little jeopardy-like game that new students' parents play. We run it in an auditorium. Right now the game is a powerpoint presentation (set up similar to jeopardy) off an old laptop running Powerpoint 2003. What I want to do is to purchase & use a smaller tablet/mini-book with a touchscreen. The touchscreen would be much more professional than dragging a mouse around the screen to select category questions. I also want to use hot keys during the presentation for sound effects (for correct + incorrect answers), and I want to play music and show an automated slideshow (photos from the day). This device would need vga or hdmi and audio out. I've been looking at iPads and iPad alternatives, but figured someone out there might have a better idea or done this before.

• Numlock on when computer is off

  I have a desktop PC which was recently moved. Since moving I've noticed that even while the PC is turned off (but wall socket turned on) the NumLock LED on the keyboard is on. It may have been doing this before the move, but I've only noticed it now. Maybe it matters that the keyboard is connected via a shared mouse/keyboard PS/2 port and I'm running Windows 7. I've not checked whether the LEDs are just keeping whatever state they were in when I turned the PC off but will do this if that information could be relevant. Why does the led stay on when the PC is turned off and how can I prevent this?

• Sql server 2000 replication error

  Good morning, I have a sql server 2000 machine, with SP4. I have a transactional replication. A keep receving this error message: The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'servername' the logreader stops responding.When i click start it starts fine, and the replication starts fine.And then, works for hours, and the problem comes back. In the begining i though it could be timeouts, but i already set a couple of parameters in the logreader profile,like querytimeout/readbatchsize. Sometimes when the logreader stops,it generates a dump, but not always. In event viewer, it appears this message: 17066 : SQL Server Assertion: File: , line=1985 Failed Assertion = 'startLSN = m_curLSN'. 18052 : Error: 3624, Severity: 20, State: 1. 17066 : SQL Server Assertion: File: , line=2223 Failed Assertion = 'm_noOfScAlloc == 0'. • How do I make my Geforce GTS 250's power save mode stop causing audio stuttering?

  Whenever my GTS 250 enters its power save mode, downscaling its frequencies, my audio stutters. This affects both my onboard audio and my Audigy Soundblaster 2 ZS. Changing Windows power save mode options such as PCI-E link state power management or Power Management Mode in the nVidia control panel have no effect on this issue. Replacing the power supply had no effect on this issue. The BIOS is the latest version, and I have the latest motherboard chipset and graphics drivers installed. I do not overclock. I started to see this issue after I upgraded my rig from its Socket 939 board to a Socket 1156 board with a Core i5-750 while simultaneously upgrading from Vista to 7.

• SQL Server Express Uninstall / Enterprise Install Issue

  I need help installing SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition.I really need to remove the current SQL Server 2005.installation that is no longer on my Add/Remove software list but yet still installed on the machine. I tried to uninstall SQL Server Express / Developer Edition but it only removed it from my Add/Remove software list. It returned immediately but did NOT actually remove the product. (I'm now in a bad state.) i tried to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise and its says I'm blocked as all components are already installed - but they are not. How can I remove all instance of previous one and install clean Enterprise edition on my server Thanks
