• Windows system restore deletes various executables and *.js files. How does it decide which files to delete?

  I restored my system from a Windows System Restore point. It solved some issues I was having, but introduced other strange problems (like my optical drive disappeared). One thing that surprised me was several files from my Web2Py installation were deleted: the executables and *.js files; possibly some others (like favicon.ico). I did not expect this because Web2Py is basically a portable, standalone application. You just unzip it and run the executable inside, so nothing should be registered with Windows. My question is: what files does Windows system restore delete, and how does it decide this? I'm just wondering what other files I'm missing and if there's a way to get restore them (without rolling back the restore point). Perhaps it scans for certain files types (like exe, js, ico, dll) with a creation date that was after the restore point creation date? • iOS 6 in-app email does not send from within any app that supports it

  A strange problem -- Last night I upgraded to the final release of iOS 6 on my iPhone 4S and my iPad 2. When I open an app that allows you to send emails from within the app (e.g. adobe Reader, TurboScan, etc.) -- doesn't matter which one -- I am prompted with the email dialog from within the app, I can compose the message, but when I go to send one of two things will happen: either the email sending sound will "swoosh" and the dialog will close (leading me to think it worked) or some apps with good error handling will say there is an "error sending email." The error logs on my device are not reporting errors. It's just that the email doesn't really send. I have two Exchange mail boxes on these devices. One connects to a corporate network hosting on-premise exchange 2007 and the other connects to Gmail over the exchange interface. Have attempted to delete and re-pair these accounts (one at a time) without any change. I'm wondering if others are experiencing this problem, or whether I should just wipe the devices and chalk it up to (another) failed upgrade. Thoughts much appreciated. Joe

• Kerberos authentication not working for one single domain

  We have a strange problem regarding Kerberos authentication with Apache mod_auth_kerb. We use a very simple krb5.conf, where only a single (main) AD server is configured. There are many domains in the forest, and it seems that SSO is working for most of them, except one. • FTP on Linux "Failed to retrieve directory listing" not firewall issue

  I've got an VPS in germany running Debian X64. I have very strange issue. I have ISPConfig CP installed using proftpd and I can not connect to FTP by any means. Few hours ago I've had installed DirectAdmin on CentOS same VPS and same issue. Simply when I connect to FTP server I get these: Status: Resolving address of web02.defikon.com Status: Connecting to 130.255.190.71:21... • INFORMIX - listener thread err 25582

  I´ve been digging different forums in the last 7 days looking for a possible solution.... Our database is based on informix running in a Linux server (LINUX SUSE 11). Suddenly, last saturday informix began to show an error message: listener-thread err=-25582 oserr=0, network connection is broken End users started to call reporting about slow network performance to this server, moments where the database application lost connection with server...so we proceeded doing a ping to the db server, getting good responses (1ms) without losing packets. I tried typing telnet (ipserver) 1526 which is informix's port for the application, it works. We had to disconnect the server and enable a backup db server which is located on another branch. It has been working in a regular way because the backup server hasn´t good specs (it is an old dell server model). So, I scanned the main server looking for viruses using Trend Micro Server Protect, it didn´t find anything (0 viruses and spywares). I revised the switches and routers, but I haven´t find anything strange... What else could be ? Thanks in advanced for your time and help with this issue.....I would really appreciate any advice...

• laptop headphone jack problems

  A while back my headphones mysteriously started making static noise and one of them stopped working completely. At first I thought it was headphones so I bought new ones. Alas that did not solve the problem. The problem must be inside my headphone jack. I did some research online and they suggested unplugging USB devices. Which has a strange effect of changing the static noises to high frequency Morse code noises (it's the aliens). I don't have this problem when i listen to music on speakers. The static is there on headphones whether there is music or not. I own a soldering iron for electronics and I am quite skilled at soldering. I would appreciate any help I can get. My laptop is the HDX 18. It has 2 headphone jacks that act exactly the same. Interesting thing i just noticed is that when i pull out my headphones almost all the way both of them start working but so do the speakers making the headphones kinda useless. Maybe there is a way to turn of the speakers as a temporary solution. I am using vista x64.

• Member Status: Inquorate in RHEL 5.6

  I've encountered a strange issue. I had to change the time on my Linux RHEL cluster system. I've done it using the following command from the root user: date +%T -s "10:13:13" After doing this, some message appeared relating to <emerg> #1: Quorum Dissolved (however I didn't capture the message completely). In order to investigate the issue I looked at /var/log/messages and I've discovered these errors. Below is the output of few commands I got when tried to investigate the issue, however I don't have enough knowledge to make use of this information. • How to test email spam scores with amavis?

  I'd like a way to test a spam message to see its spam scores that SpamAssassin gives it. The SA db files (bayes_toks, etc) reside in /var/lib/amavis/.spamassassin. I've been testing emails by doing this: sudo su amavis -c 'spamassassin -t msgfile' Though this yields some strange results, such as: Content analysis details: (3.7 points, 5.0 required) pts rule name description ---- ---------------------- -------------------------------------------------- 3.5 BAYES_99 BODY: Bayes spam probability is 99 to 100% [score: 1.0000] -0.0 NO_RELAYS Informational: message was not relayed via SMTP 0.0 LONG_TERM_PRICE BODY: LONG_TERM_PRICE 0.2 BAYES_999 BODY: Bayes spam probability is 99.9 to 100% [score: 1.0000] -0.0 NO_RECEIVED Informational: message has no Received headers 0.2 is an awfully low scores for BAYES_999! But this is the first time I've used amavis, previously I've always just used spamassassin directly as a content filter in postfix, but apparently running amavis/spamassassin is more efficient. So, with amavis in the picture, how can I run a test on a message to see its spam score breakdown? Another email I ran a test on got this result: 2.0 BAYES_80 BODY: Bayes spam probability is 80 to 95% [score: 0.8487] Doesn't make sense, that BAYES_80 can yield a higher score than BAYES_999. Help!

• Boot loop that I cannot bypass

  Recently, on a laptop that I've used for a while, I had a strange issue where OS files were corrupted (device manager) and Windows 8 was hung after the login screen, so I reinstalled Windows 7 over the existing Windows 8 installation, and it worked for a couple days. Today, when I tried to use my laptop, it was stuck on a boot loop. Right after the BIOS screen, it would show a flashing underscore, then restart the computer, again and again until I removed the battery. I tried booting to a windows 7 install CD, but the same flashing underscore - reboot sequence happened when I tried. I tried moving the boot priority around (HDD first, CD/DVD first, even USB first) but nothing changed. After about an hour of tinkering with it, I listened to the HDD sounds, and it sounded like the HDD was trying to spin up, but failing (whining noise increasing in frequency that stopped and started in sync with the system restarting). I am planning to replace the HDD, but I'm still confused as to why a faulty HDD would stop the laptop from booting to my install DVD (tried it on a different computer, it booted from that CD fine). Anybody here have any idea why this might be happening?

• Toshiba laptop cd drive read causes OS to totally freeze

  Okay I'll try to write an understandable summary. Forgive me if I'll fail with that attempt though. So. There is a Toshiba Satellite notebook. Got Windows 7 x86 Professional (OEM) installed on it, everything is fine (okay.. somewhat). The problem. If you put an audio or any kind of disc into the drive, something starts to eat the PC. Back then when the owner told me about this, he put an audio disc into the lappy. Winamp caused the IO load, 100%. Tried taskkill, taskkill /T, tried powershell, EVERYTHING. You just can NOT kill winamp or anything which becomes the blocker at that time. Even if you kill almost everything, laptop won't do a clear shutdown. Also I tried to use the force switch at 'shutdown' from cmd, but no use. (So: At these times you can use the laptop, but the blocker/explorer/disc becomes gray as a non-responding app. You can try to kill them, but that won't work, nor you can shutdown the machine). (Also tried using PID, but no use. For the highest IO I used the "select columns" from Task Manager and enabled the IO columns.) My first hunch was the problematic disc, autoplay and it tries to read tries to read (still shouldn't kill the PC). Disabled autoplay, removed winamp. Tried other software, etc. Everything was ok. Few days later the owner tried to put a disc into the machine and it started to reproduce the same symptoms but with a totally different disc. Uhm what to know. Virus is not an option, protected by BitDefender (valid license) and Spybot. Thanks if you have ANY idea about this strange problem. ps.: For now, the owner uses Daemon tools + Blindwrite as an alternative for those apps which wouldnt start without the disc.

• Splitting HDMI sound to 2 devices under Windows 7

  Okay, this is a strange set-up and is frustrating me. I have an HDMI signal from my PC being split to my audio receiver and my HDTV. I need to split it to both so that I can choose to either play audio from the HDTV or from the surround sound speakers in the room. The problem that I am having is in Windows 7, the output is listed under "Playback Devices" and is auto-populated with the HDTV, which only has the option for stereo sound. If I unplug the HDTV from the splitter it will populate with my receiver information and let me set it to 5.1 surround, but as soon as I plug the HDTV back in it reverts. I tried reversing the order of the HDMI cables in the splitter and this seemed to work for a short while, then Windows must have polled the devices again or something because it reverted. It will work as long as Windows identifies the reciever, thereby unlocking the 5.1 surround option, otherwise I am stuck with stereo, which it assumes is all the HDTV is capable of. Is there a way to manually override this and set my own options? Or any other solutions?

• Vagrant up doesn't load chef configs and doesn't keep an error log

  I'm trying to set up a vagrant box and I'm running with all sort of troubles. Right now I'm getting a strange error message where it states there's a stack trace file with more info, but that file is no where to be found. • How can I use the Homebrew Python with Homebrew MacVim on Mountain Lion?

  I originally asked and answered this question: How can I use the Homebrew Python version with Homebrew MacVim? These instructions worked on Snow Leopard using Xcode 4.0.1 and associated developer tools. However, they no longer seem to work on Mountain Lion with Xcode 4.4.1. My goal is to leave the system's version of Python completely untouched, and to only install PyPI packages into Homebrew's site-packages directory. I want to use the vim_bridge package in MacVim, so I need to compile MacVim against the Homebrew version of Python. I've edited the MacVim formula to add these to the arguments: --enable-pythoninterp=dynamic --with-python-config-dir=/usr/local/Cellar/python/2.7.3/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/python2.7/config Then I install with the command: brew install macvim --override-system-vim --custom-icons --with-cscope --with-lua However, it still seems to be somehow using Python 2.7.2 from the system. • how to cause linux system datetime to run faster than real world datetime?

  Background I want to monitor a running linux system over several days. It's a custom gentoo build and with much custom software on board. This software has ongoing maintenance timers and cron scripts and other clock driven events. I need to verify these scheduled events are working. Problem Waiting for the system to step through daily and weekly activity is a long wait time. And modifying all clock-based timers on the system would be time consuming. Yet, I often want to test a system's end-to-end scheduled activities without waiting a week. Potential Solution Have the linux system under test appear to run through it's daily cycle of activity within just a few hours. My Question for Serverfault Is there a way to cause the system's time to run faster than real world time? My first thought is manipulating the ntp daemon to repeatedly and smoothly increment the clock . Any other ideas? And yes, I know this may have strange side affects. However, the system has no important or time critical interactions with systems outside of itself. And this may be a valuable testing technique.

• SQL 2000 Backup/Export Process - Can't find SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager, Can't use Mgmt Studio Expre

  I need to make a backup of a client's SQL 2000 database, however there are a few issues preventing me from doing so using the traditional methods. I've tried using SQL Management Studio Express, but the host doesn't give sufficient privileges to create a backup and I'm getting some strange error messages. I've also tried doing the "Generate Scripts" to recreate the schema, then using the DTS Wizard to migrate the data, but the IDs set up with the identity specification property are not consistent with the live database once copied over. This results in some foreign key breakage... If I remember correctly, I was able to use Microsoft SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager to perform the task before, but I can't find this anywhere... it seems Microsoft has pulled most SQL Server 2000 stuff from their site. Does anyone know where I can find a copy of Enterprise Manager (or a trial of SQL Server 2000, which I believe comes with the component)? Or conversely, does anyone know of any other tools (preferably non-commercial) that are capable of mirroring remote SQL Server 2000 DBs? Thanks!

• If I can take a screen capture of a graphical anomaly, can it still be a hardware issue?

  I have a strange graphical anomaly going on my iMac right now (green and magenta boxes are appearing sporadically), I'm slowly trying to work through different possibilities but I thought I'd start with the basics: Can a graphical anomaly that I can screen capture still be a hardware issue? I know, it seems really obvious. If it's hardware, it should show up well after the operating system has had it's say. And since the operating system is (I assume) doing the screen capture, it seems like it shouldn't see the anomaly unless the problem is software in nature. But, as I've researched this problem I see a lot of people taking their computers in to service people for hardware issues and Apple then resolving said issue. To further complicate things, I also have Windows 8 installed via bootcamp, and the issues seems to be showing up there as well. Anyway, it feels like it must be a driver issue, since I assume that's what the two OSes have in common, but...I thought I'd come here for some disambiguation. In my case, yes, I can screen capture the anomaly (at least in OSX I can), so I assume it's somehow a software (or driver) issue. But I wanted to double check because the internet is being ambiguous...

• SQL server queries are really slow only on first run

  Somewhat strange problem... when I start my .NET app for the first time after rebooting my machine, the SQL Server queries are really slow... when I pause the debugger, I notice that it's hanging on getting the response from the query. This only happens when connecting to a remote SQL server (2008)... if I connect to one on my local machine, it's fine. Also, if I restart the app, it works fast, even off the remote SQL server, and subsequent runs are also fine. The only problem is when I connect to a remote SQL server for the first time after rebooting my machine. What's more, I have even noticed this same exact behavior with a 3rd party app (also .NET) that also connects to a remote SQL server. Another piece of info... this has only started hapenning since I upgraded my machine from XP to Win7 (64 bit). Also, other developers on my team who upgraded to Win7 are seeing the same behavior (both with the app we're developing and the 3rd party .NET app). • supervisord launches with wrong setuid

  I am trying to test a pilot system with nginx connecting to uwsgi served application controlled by supervisord running on ubuntu-server. Application is written in python with Flask in virtualenv, although I'm not sure if that is relevant. To test the system I have created a simple hello world with flask. I want nginx and uwsgi both to run as www-data user. If I launch uwsgi "manually" from root shell I can see uwsgi processes runing as appropriate user (www-data). Although, if I let supervisor launch the application something strange happens - uwsgi processes are runing under my user (friendzis). Consequently, socket file gets created under wrong user and nginx cannot communicate with my applicaion. note: the linux server runs as Hyper-V VM, under Windows Server 2008. • Windows 7: Image thumbnails fail to appear

  All right, I've got a pretty strange one here. Since I installed Windows 7 on this machine some time ago, image thumbnails have never worked properly. For the vast majority of images, they completely fail to show up, showing the icon of the default image viewing application instead. Please note that the “Always show icons, never thumbnails” option in folder options is not checked. I've taken a screenshot demonstrating the problem, here: Sometimes, a few image thumbnails will show up correctly, maybe about one in ten, with the rest failing as well. Another screenshot, with a handful of thumbnails visible, can be seen here: Windows explorer does not appear to make any effort to populate the missing thumbnails, and there is no appreciable CPU usage. I can leave a window with missing thumbnails open all night and they will still never appear. Newly created images never generate thumbnails, only images that have been on the system since day one will occasionally show them. This leads me to believe that explorer is set to show thumbnails, but whatever process is supposed to be in charge of actually generating them has failed somehow. In previous versions of windows, explorer.exe itself was responsible for thumbnail generation – has this changed? Any suggestions at all – even if you aren't sure that they will work – are welcome. I'd hate to have to wipe and reinstall on this machine for such a minor annoyance.

• Can't ping a DNS zone on windows server 2008 R2

  I´ve just configured a windows server 2008 r2, but got a lot of problems on DNS role. Let me talk about the server configuration: name: fdserver IP address: 192.168.0.10 I have a DNS zone called "fd.local". This is my domain and it´s working ok. I´ve created a zone called fdserver, and inside this zone a record (A) with "*" as a host. because this is a webserver, i´ve configured apache so if you enter something like "site.fdserver" it will point you to the "site" folder. This is working ok ONLY inside the server. This server is a DNS server too... and have 3 entries: 192.168.0.10 (his own IP), 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (google public DNS). Now start the problems... Most of the computers on my network, CAN join the domain without problems. But just CAN'T ping "something.fdserver". Now comes the strange thing... If I remove the twoo secondary entries on my DNS server (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), it obvious stop accessing websites (like microsoft.com), but now the computer CAN ping "something.fdserver". I don´t know If I explained correctly... and my English is terrible... but inside the server is all working as it supposed to work. But in the workstation machines, it work only if I remove the secondary DNS!! If you need any details, just ask! thanks!

• Apache2 - 500 internal server error

  i'm running a VPS with Linux CentOs 6 with 4 GB of RAM, 10 GB of HD and 2 virtual CPU Intel(R) Xeon(R)CPU L5640 @ 2.27GHz. As my host says each virtual CPU must be at least 0.5 physical cpu. At certain times of the day, those with more traffic, trying accessing my php script i receive intermittently "500 internal server error". I activate logging to debug level from apache, and also the PHP logging with E_ALL, but I can't find reference to Error 500 in any logs(I checked the right logs!). I haven't got any .htaccess file in path script. The strange thing is that the error start at first php line in the script (the previous html displays correctly, but at the first php line the script send 500 error). The cpu load is always good (max 0.15 0.08 0.01) and RAM is close to 95% but it arrived to swap just 2 times in a month with 2-5 MB. Apache works with prefork with this values: <IfModule prefork.c> StartServers 8 MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 20 ServerLimit 280 MaxClients 280 MaxRequestsPerChild 4000 </IfModule> Everthing works correctly and I don't get any error in quiet times, but i start receive errors when traffic rises (6-9000 visits per hour). Can i solve the problem increasing resources? (i can upgrade RAM up to 16 GB). It can depend from reaching MaxClients (but apache must write it on log, right?)? If I upgrade RAM to 6 or 8 GB i have to calculate MaxClients value with this? MaxClients = Total RAM dedicated to the web server / Max child process size Max child process size is around 20M. How else can the problem be? Thanks in advance

• Spurious alleged file corruption on Windows 7

  Recently my Laptop sometimes warns about corrupted files on the hard drive (Samsung SSD PB22-JS3 TM). This has only happened so far when updating (or checking out) an SVN repository with either TortoiseSVN or the command line Subversion client. The fun thing is that the corrupted file has always been a .svn directory (although the directory entry may contain files in that directory too, if they're small enough?—?which should be the case with SVN). However, when looking into the warned-about directory I notice nothing strange or unusual and don't get any more warnings about it and another try (SVN stops updating once that error occurs?—?TortoiseSVN even with an appropriate error message) of updating the working copy works (well, mostly; sometimes it does it again, albeit with a different directory). Since the laptop is only a few months old I doubt the SSD is failing already—five months of normal usage shouldn't be too surprising. Also it (so far) occurred only with SVN updates on a large repository. Maybe that's too many writes in a short time and some part between the software and the hardware doesn't quite catch up fast enough or so?—?I don't know enough about this to actually make an informed guess here. Anyone knows what's up here? ETA: Note to add: I've run chkdsk (it seems to schedule itself anyway when this happens) and it didn't find anything out of the ordinary.

• Is "DSLAM congestion" a legitimate reason for slow DSL?

  My DSL has been extremely slow in the evenings recently. To test it, I telnet to my DSL Modem, and ping the gateway. This way I eliminate internet congestion and local network issues. In the mornings I get 30ms - 50ms pings. In the evenings, it bounces around a lot, but 10000ms pings are common. I complained to Qwest support, and they said it was a known issue on their end, their engineers were working on it, and wouldn't say anything else. A couple days later I complained again, and they sent out a technician. He tested my house wiring and found that one of them had a short. It was an unused line, so we disconnected it, and he said things looked better and left. My daytime speeds improved at this point, but evening is still bad. I complained to Qwest support again, and they said it was a problem with DSLAM congestion at their end, and that they were working on it, but no ETA. My neighbor has Qwest DSL and doesn't seem to have these problems. That seems strange. I go use her network when I absolutely must get online and mine is behaving badly. I can't tell if they're yanking my chain or not. Regardless, these speeds are crap. I'm paying for 7Mpbs but am lucky if I get 1/10th that in the evenings. My kids like to watch Netflix streaming movies, and it's just impossible after 5pm or so. Should I wait it out? Will complaining again produce any results? Should I change my subscription to a lower speed until they fix their end? Or switch to cable?

• Cannot access host from a virtualbox guest using bridged adapter

  I have a windows 7 host with firewall turned off. And I have a windowsXP guest running on Virtualbox 4.2.4r81684. In my windowsXP guest I tried to connect to the FTP server on my host machine(which used to work well) but it didn't work. I tried to ping my host machine, but it didn't work either.
