• How to reduce the CPU load on a hosting with WordPress installed as a CMS? [on hold]

  I have been using hostgators hatchling plan for three months. I got an email from the hosting that my website is creating an over load on CPU. They said that I am eating up their processor and as a precaution, they have temporarily suspended my account. When I contacted their customer support, they said: You have to optimize your database and use some sort of caching mechanism, where the script does not need to generate a new page with every request, helps to lower the over load that a script will cause. I am not a technical geek, I am wondering how I will do this thing. I don't have any resource to hire a web developer to do this job. My website is down for 48hours. I was using wp super cache along with cloudfare's free support. Now I have intalled optimize-db plugin and optimized my database. Please provide me with some more tips on how to optimize my database to reduce CPU usage. Any help would be appreciated.

• More productive alone than in a team?

  If I work alone, I used to be superproductive, if I want to be. Running prototypes within a day, something that you can deploy and use within a few days. Not perfect, but good enough. I also had this experience a few times when working directly with someone else. Everybody could do the whole thing, but it was more fun not to do it alone and also quicker. The right two people can take an admittedly not too large project onto new levels. Now at work we have a seven person team and I do not feel nearly as productive. Not even nearly. Certain stuff needs to be checked against something else, which then needs to also take care of some new requirement, which just came in three days ago. All sorts of stuff, mostly important, but often just a technical debt from long ago or misconception or different vocabulary for the same thing or sometimes just a not too technically thought out great idea from someone who wants to have their say, and so on. Digging down the rabbit hole, I think to myself, I could do larger portions of this work faster alone (and somewhat better, too), but it's not my responsibility (someone else gets paid for that), so by design I should not care. But I do, because certain things go hand in hand (as you may experience it, when you done sideprojects on your own). I know this is something Fred Brooks has written about, but still, what's your strategy for staying as productive as you know you could be in the cubicle? Or did you quit for some related reason; and if so where did you go?

• Language Design: Are languages like Python and CoffeeScript really more comprehensible?

  The "Verbally Readable !== Quicker Comprehension" argument on http://ryanflorence.com/2011/case-against-coffeescript/ is really potent and interesting. I and I'm sure others would be very interested in evidence arguing against this. There's clear evidence for this and I believe it. People naturally think in images, not words, so we should be designing languages that aren't similar to human language like English, French, whatever. Being "readable" is quicker comprehension. Most articles on Wikipedia are not readable as they are long, boring, dry, sluggish and very very wordy. Because Wikipedia documents a ton of info, it is not especially helpful when compared to sites with more practical, useful and relevant info. Languages like Python and CoffeScript are "verbally readable" in that they are closer to English syntax. Having programmed firstly and mainly in Python, I'm not so sure this is really a good thing. The second interesting argument is that CoffeeScript is an intermediator, a step between two ends, which may increase the chance of bugs. While CoffeeScript has other practical benefits, this question specifically requests evidence showing support for the counter-case of language "readability"

• How well do graduates from top universities perform and how does it feel compare to the rest of the world?

  I always have impressions to those who got admitted into top Universities like MIT, Standford... for studying Engineering. I don't actually know what they are doing in the University or what they will do, but I always feel they can perform higher level tasks with more complexities. I always think that they are good at create and applying mathematical model in real life and I tend to agree: If you can't apply math, it's your problems, not math. I am a junior software engineer on embedded devices. I am learning more on Linux kernel and low level stuffs. Even so, my will is not strong enough to pursue technical path forever, with a final purpose is to create something significant on my own. May I have a chance to get on their level if I keep learning through experience and self-study? In my opinion, Math is the must have requirement, since it seems that programs on those Universities are very Math oriented. Without very strong math skill, how can one perform good in science and researching beyond making regular business products?

• how to get wireless to work on my HP Compaq nx6325 Notebook on 12.04

  When my laptop ran XP, the wireless worked perfectly. Now the only way I get internet is having it wired in my living room - which is MASSIVELY inconvenient for me seeing as my room is outside. I have downloaded the driver from 'Additional Drivers', reset my computer (with difficulty, it also doesn't seem to like turning off, so I have to 'kill' it) and still nothing! I have looked all over the internet trying to find solutions but I just cant seem to get it to work. I have a USB wireless stick but I can't load the driver from the CD. I got this comment on a previous question: "Using either Snaptic Package Manager or Ubuntu's own Software Centre, remove "bcmwl-kernel-source" if it's already installed. Next, search for "firmware-b43-installer” and “b43-fwcutter” and install both. Finally, running Software Sources and checking the Additional Drivers tab you should find Broadcom STA Wireless Driver that you can select, install and on reboot hopefully have wireless working ok..." Which I replied: "Right, so I tried to find/remove "bcmwl-kernel-source" but couldn't find anything. I managed to install both "firmware-b43-installer” and “b43-fwcutter” using terminal, after finding out how it worked. And lastly, I couldn't figure out how to find 'Broadcom STA Wireless Driver' - still no more additional drivers. And my wireless is still not working. My laptop has a button that turns wifi on and off and since I put Ubuntu on it, it hasn't worked. And also, my computer still doesn't seem to restart properly - it just gets stuck on the ubuntu loading screen." - hope that helps, somewhat I am VERY new to Linux, not very technical and in need of help! -Running Ubuntu 12.04 32bit on a HP Compaq nx6325 Notebook Thank you to anyone who replies, its much appreciated

• Career change: from programming into more human-oriented area [closed]

  I have been a software developer for approximately 9 years, starting with part-time work during my graduation year at uni. During these years I worked for number of companies, sometimes changing places twice or three times a year. They say it takes 10 years to reach 'expert' level, and while I don't think I am an expert by any measure and I have certainly met lots of people who are more knowledgeable, smarter and more focused than I am, I think I can safely say that I had my fair share of the whole programming trade and would like to move on to something else. Psychology and behaviour was always something I was interested in, especially the practical, applicable bits of it. Recently I've been to some communication skills training and I realised that I have been missing out on the great deal of fun stuff - how people work and communicate, especially in subconscious, non-verbal area. Currently I am thinking of making a career change - ideally to move somewhere my technical skill would still be beneficial in some shape or form, or at least could serve as a bridge while I am transitioning there, you know, the whole gradual, bit-by-bit approach versus swim-or-drown one. I would like to hear your thoughts on this matter and to learn from you what are the possible transitions I can take.

• How to enable a Web portal-based rich enterprise platform on different domains and hosts using JS without customization/ server configuration

  Our company Coscend has built a Web portal-based communications and cloud collaboration platform by using JavaScript (JS), which is embedded in HTML5 and formatted with CSS3. Other technologies used in the core code include Flash, Flex, PostgreSQL and MySQL. Our team would like to host this platform on five different Windows and Linux environments that run different types of Web servers such as IIS and Apache. Technical challenge: Each of these Windows and Linux servers have a different host name and domain name (and IP address), but we would like to keep our enterprise platform independent of host server configuration. Possible approach to solution: We think an API (interface module with a GUI) is needed to accomplish this level of modularity and flexibility while deploying at our enterprise customers. Seeking your insights: In this context, our team would appreciate your guidance on: Is there an algorithmic method to implement this Web portal-based platform in these Windows and Linux environments while separating it from server configuration, i.e., customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? For example, would it be suitable to create some JS variables / objects for host name and domain name and call them in the different implementations? If a reference to the host/domain names occurs on hundreds of portal modules, these variables or JS objects would replace that. If so, what is the best way to make these object modules written in JS portable and re-usable across different environments and instances for enterprise customers? Here is an example of the implemented code for the said platform. The following Web site (www.CoscendCommunications.com) was built using this enterprise collaboration platform and has the base code examples of the platform. This Web site is domain-specific. We like to make the underlying platform such that it is domain and host-independent. This will allow the underlying platform to be deployed in multiple instances of our enterprise customers.

  I love Google Analytics!  It helps me so much during my day-to-day maintenance of Geekswithblogs.net and our other sites.  I can see so much data about our visitors and come up with new ways of delivering more content to our readers so they can really get the most out of our community.  Browsers and Browser Versions is a big indicator for me to help decide what we can support and what we need to be testing with.  The clear browsers of choice right now are Chrome, IE, and Firefox taking up 94.1%.  The next browser is Safari at 2.71%.  What this really brings to my attention besides I better test well with Chrome, Firefox, and IE is that we are definitely missing an opportunity with Mobile devices.  We really need to kick up the heat when it comes to a mobile presence with Geekswithblogs.net as a community and the blogs that are on this site.  We need easy discovery of new content and easy tracking of what I like.  I am definitely on mission to make this happen and it will be a phased approach, but I want to see these numbers changes since most of us have 2 or 3 mobile devices we use for Social activities, but tools are lacking for interacting with technical data besides RSS readers. • What credentials should I use to access a Windows share?

  i, I have installed Samba and CIFS and all that, followed a bunch of tutorials, but still I can't access a share in the separate Windows 7 machine. Before I could access a share in Ubuntu from Windows, but although now I can't for whatever reason; the error of the attempt to mount the Windows share is the same: 13, asking for credentials (the computer with Windows is off now, but I can add the exact error message later). In /etc/fstab I have: # ... (help info) ... # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> # ... (mounting points that don't matter for the question) ... //192.168.1.2/C\:/Users/Public/Documents /srv/Z\:/ cifs user=guest,password=,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8 0 0 I also tried options such as username=guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8 and guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8, which, of course, don't work. What user am I supposed to use? (user=user; username=user; my credentials in the Windows and Ubuntu machines do not work, at least with the syntax I tried - similar to this). Even if this worked it's not actually what I want. I wanted to setup an authentication for any one trying to access the drive (it's currently 777, for the Linux share as well) and put a limit/quota on the share's use (as I see Z:on Windows, it allows for the entire C:drive to be filled). Thank you in advance. I'd be glad if you suggested a way to do this even without the last paragraph.

• Information about rendering, batches, the graphical card, performance etc. + XNA?

  I know the title is a bit vague but it's hard to describe what I'm really looking for, but here goes. When it comes to CPU rendering, performance is mostly easy to estimate and straightforward, but when it comes to the GPU due to my lack of technical background information, I'm clueless. I'm using XNA so it'd be nice if theory could be related to that. So what I actually wanna know is, what happens when and where (CPU/GPU) when you do specific draw actions? What is a batch? What influence do effects, projections etc have? Is data persisted on the graphics card or is it transferred over every step? When there's talk about bandwidth, are you talking about a graphics card internal bandwidth, or the pipeline from CPU to GPU? Note: I'm not actually looking for information on how the drawing process happens, that's the GPU's business, I'm interested on all the overhead that precedes that. I'd like to understand what's going on when I do action X, to adapt my architectures and practices to that. Any articles (possibly with code examples), information, links, tutorials that give more insight in how to write better games are very much appreciated. Thanks :)

• How do I decide what type of programmer I want to be?

  I've been working at my current work for some time, and I'm considering a bit of a change of careers. I'm trying to decide what it is exactly that I want to do, and I'm really just not sure. I'm not wanting a solution for my particular case, but what I'd like to know are some generalities of things I can look for. Here are some positions that I'm considering, and what my definitions are (I'm probably calling them something other than what is standard, but hopefully this will do for now). I'm looking for quizzes, articles, explanations, or anything that can help me figure this out. Manager - Managing programmers in some sense, mostly in making sure they are kept working. Coder - A person who is told to make a program do XYZ, and makes it do that. Doesn't have to model anything, or come up with formulas. Algorithm Designer - A person who comes up with a way to make software do something, but doesn't necessarily code that program, at least, not in it's final form. QA - A person who tests code for bugs, preferably with the code in hand. Architect - This person figures out how all of the pieces fit together, is a technical manager of sorts. Maintainer - This person takes someone else's existing code, and makes sure it is fixed when issues arise. Also of some note is figuring out what industry I want to work in. • Why is a software development life-cycle so inefficient?

  Currently the software development lifecycle followed in the IT company I work at is: The "Business" works with a solution manager to build a Business Requirement document The solution manager works with the Program manager to build a Functional Spec The PM works with the engineering lead to develop a release plan and with the engineering team to develop technical specifications If there are any clarifications required, developers contact the PM who contacts the solution manager who contacts the business and all the way back introducing a latency of nearly 24 hours and massive email chains for any clarifications By the time the tech spec is made, nearly 1 month has passed in back and forth Now, 2 weeks go to development while the test writes test cases Code is dropped formally to test, test starts raising bugs. Even if there is 1 root cause for 10 different issues, and its an easily fixed one, developers are not allowed to give fresh code to test for the next 1 week. After 2-3 such drops to test the code is given to the ops team as a "golden drop" ( 2 months passed from the beginning) Ops team will now deploy the code in a staging environment. If it runs stable for a week, it will be promoted to UAT and after 2 weeks of that it will be promoted to prod. If there are any bugs found here, well, applying for a visa requires less paperwork This entire process is followed even if a single SSRS report is to be released. How do other companies process such requirements? I'm wondering why, the business cannot just drop the requirements to developers, developers build and deploy to UAT themselves, expose it to the business who raise functional bugs and after fixing those promote to prod. (even for more complex stuff)

• How much a programmer should read in order to keep himself updated? [closed]

  There are lots of technical books available. Below are few links which lists some good books If you could only have one programming related book on your bookshelf what would it be and why? What non-programming books should a programmer read to help develop programming/thinking skills? Best books on the theory and practice of software architecture? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1711/what-is-the-single-most-influential-book-every-programmer-should-read ... and the list can go on and on and on. It will be really difficult to read all of the above mentioned books. I am not sure if its even possible for anyone to do that. Even if you filter it based on one's area of interest or work, list is still very large. .. and the technology keeps on changing (even more books :-( ) So, my question is how much a programmer should read lets say per year? How much hours one should put in such activities to keep oneself up to date? How do we find out the time required? PS: Average programmer reads less than one book per year (Code complete). What about the good programmers?

• What guidelines should be followed when implementing third-party tracking pixels?

  Background I work on a website that gets a fair amount of traffic, and as such, we have implemented different tracking pixels and techniques across the site for various specific reasons. Because there are many agencies who are sending traffic our way through email campaigns, print ads and SEM, we have agreements with a variety of different outside agencies for tracking these page hits. Consequently, we have tracking pixels which span the entire site, as well as some that are on specific pages only. We have worked to reduce the total number of pixels available on any one page, but occasionally the site is rendered close to unusable when one of these third-party tracking pixels fails to load. This is a huge difficulty on parts of the site where Javascript is needed for functionality built into the page, but is unable to initialize until a 404 is returned on the external tracking pixel. (Sometimes up to 30 seconds later) I have spent some time attempting to research how other firms deal with this sort of instability with third-party components, but have come up a bit short. The plan currently is to implement our own stop-gap method to deal with these external outages, but rather than reinventing the wheel, we wanted to find out how this is dealt with on other sites. Question Is there a good set of guidelines that should be followed when implementing third-party tracking pixels? I would love to see some white papers or other written documents about how other people have dealt with this issue.

• Search multiple tables

  I have developed a web application that is used mainly for archiving all sorts of textual material (documents, references to articles, books, magazines etc.). There can be any given number of archive tables in my system, each with its own schema. The schema can be changed by a moderator through the application (imagine something similar to a really dumbed down version of phpMyAdmin). Users can search for anything from all of the tables. By using FULLTEXT indexes together with substring searching (fields which do not support FULLTEXT indexing) the script inserts the results of a search to a single table and by ordering these results by the similarity measure I can fairly easily return the paginated results. However, this approach has a few problems: substring searching can only count exact results the 50% rule applies to all tables separately and thus, mysql may not return important matches or too naively discards common words. is quite expensive in terms of query numbers and execution time (not an issue right now as there's not a lot of data yet in the tables). normalized data is not even searched for (I have different tables for categories, languages and file attatchments). My planned solution Create a single table having columns similar to id, table_id, row_id, data Every time a new row is created/modified/deleted in any of the data tables this central table also gets updated with the data column containing a concatenation of all the fields in a row. I could then create a single index for Sphinx and use it for doing searches instead. Are there any more efficient solutions or best practises how to approach this? Thanks.

• Getting into the details of game engine programming

  I am interested in learning game programming, but I really have an interest in the lower level engineering in games. I have OpenGL experience, and I am really interested in learning more about implementing AI, Physics, etc. I have a computer science degree, so I really like getting into technical stuff. Many times when I ask about this sort of thing, I get a lot of "Use an engine", "Use Unity3d", "Why waste your time writing code that already exists", etc, etc. My idea was to use simpler libraries such as SFML or XNA so that I could learn how to implement the more complex systems. The thing is, although I do want to write games, I want to learn things that using something like Unity simply doesn't teach you. My goal is not to make a current generation quality 3D game to sell, I just want to make some cool smaller games and learn all I can about the programming side of game development. Is this something that people just do not do anymore? It seems like everywhere I turn people are using Unity or UDK or GameMaker. I fully understand why you would use a tool like these, but I cant see how they would suit my purposes. So where does someone like myself turn? [duplicate] 3 answers We maintain a web application for a client who demands that new features be added at a breakneck pace. We've done our best to keep up with their demands, and as a result the code base has grown exponentially. There are now so many modules, subsystems, controllers, class libraries, unit tests, APIs, etc. that it's starting to take more time to work through all of the complexity each time we add a new feature. We've also had to pull additional people in on the project to take over things like QA and staging, so the lead developers can focus on developing. Unfortunately, the client is becoming angry that the cost for each new feature is going up. They seem to expect that we can add new features ad infinitum and the cost of each feature will remain linear. I have repeatedly tried to explain to them that it doesn't work that way - that the code base expands in a fractal manner as all these features are added. I've explained that the best way to keep the cost down is to be judicious about which new features are really needed. But, they either don't understand, or they think I'm bullshitting them. They just sort of roll their eyes and get angry. They're all completely non-technical, and have no idea what does into writing software. Is there a way that I can explain this using business language, that might help them understand better? Are there any visualizations out there, that illustrate the growth of a code base over time? Any other suggestions on dealing with this client?
