  • Linux Newbie: SSH or VNC for linux admin tasks

    Longtime Windows user, looking to get my feet wet with Linux. Since Windows makes comparatively little use of the command line, I'm naturally more comfortable with GUI tools for remote server administration tasks. However, before i rush out and install a VNC server on my Linux box, I want to get a sense of how many of Linux's various packages actually offer GUI front end. If not many, then it's probably not worth the effort.

  • netstat -ntap doesn't show pid/process name for some connections?

    I have ubuntu/hardy server, with kernel 2.6.24-23-server and netstat: # netstat --version net-tools 1.60 netstat 1.42 (2001-04-15) The problem is that we have a lot of ESTABLISHED connections that don't show PID nor Program name in netstat -ntap output. Netstat was called from root, there are no chroots, grsecurity, nor anything like this (or so I was told :). Any idea on what might be wrong? UPDATE lsof -n -i works ok, and shows pid/process name for the connections.

    hello i installed debian squeeze in my pc but i dont have any sound , my sound device is Ac97 and i installed these package in my system alsa-base alsa-oss alsa-tools alsa-utils alsamixergui gstreamer0.10-alsa libao-common libao4 libasound2 linux-sound-base oss-compat when i want to run alsamixer io got this message cannot open mixer: No such file or directory anyone know why i got this message ? and i cant hear any sound in my pc?

  • Open a file with eclipse via terminal and focus eclipse window

    I am a webdeveloper and my current working tools are: Terminal (ssh, tailing logs, grep, git, etc) Eclipse (PDT, Javascript, etc) Firefox (Developer Toolbar + Firebug) The problem is that I hate using the eclipse navigation tree. For me it is a lot easier to go to the Terminal and do something like this: $ eclipse /var/www/myproject/long/path/lib/Driver/Sql.php The annoying part is that the eclipse window is not focused after this command. I have to manually click on the eclipse window (using mouse... :@ grrr) Anyway to force eclipse to be focused?

What do I do, do you know of other tools that can burn / extract iso file contents to a flash drive?   • Remote IIS Administration - "Not enough storage available to process this command"

    I'm trying to do Remote Administration of IIS in C#.NET using System.Web.Administration tools. Everything works fine on a test server (windows 2008), however when I try using our live server (windows 2003) it fails giving the message: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException : Not enough storage is available to process this command. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070008) The server itself has plenty of memory free, so I believe this is some kind of memory limit with the RPC itself. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890425 Is there any way around this?

I ask because I've recently come across tools like dropbox, deepfreeze, returnil, etc, and I'm curious what other ones are out there to protect a new box.     my server has a disk error, unfortunately RAID-0. So i am planning to boot it off CD (partedmagic) and copy the VMs to a USB disk. File system is VMFS (esxi4) once the damaged disk is replaced back could the data be restored back? this server has two datastores this bad disk belongs to store-1. please suggest any better ways or tools. thanks in advance

  • Broken fonts in Konsole KDE 4.3.4

    I have a strange situation - after some upgrades a couple of days ago fonts in KDE Konsole broke. To make it more specific - standard fonts look more or less OK, but when I use my national characters (like acelnsózz) they all look broken - like from another font, or badly scaled. The same problem doesn't exist in GNOME Terminal. I usually use the Terminus font, so I used this for demonstration, but it shows in other fonts as well - if that will be necessary I will provide list.     hi , I am using hostapd,wireless tools with madwifi for my wireless ap in my board. The WEP, WPA-PSK connections and communications between my board and my desktop PC, WINDOWS XP SP2) (with OLITEC wireless usb)are fine. But when i configured the WPA type, connection established but it is showing the status in the secuirity dialog box "TKIP - Key Absent" Can any one faced this problem?? /renjith g

  • Akamai log processing

    I'm digging through Akamai logs, downloading excel sheets, and then manually joining them so that I can do sorting of data to find top videos and referrers. Are there any tools you know of to help with this kind of processing? I'm looking for something like Urchin used to be for Apache logs, but for Akamai logs. Thanks!

  • Tool to compute SHA256 Tree Hash

    I've started using AWS Glacier, and noticed that it hashes the files using an algorithm called SHA-256 Tree Hash. To my surprise, this algorithm is different from SHA-256, so I can't use the tools I'm used to, to compare hashes and verify file integrity. Do you know a Windows tool, if possible integrated in the context menu, to compute the SHA-256 Tree Hash of a file? I'd also accept a Linux command-line tool, as a second choice :-)

  • How do you keep track of what's connected to your switches?

    Currently we manually document the connections to the ports of our switches. Of course, maintenance is a chore, and the documentation is out of date as soon as you save it. Are there any tools for querying switches, preferably via SNMP, that can tell you what is connected on the other end? For the record, we use primarily HP ProCurve switches.

  • Built in spam filters SBS2008

    I have an sbs 2008 server with exchange 2007, its running the MS spam filters which picks up the spam fine, however a lot of senders cannot send email to the recipients of the sbs2008 server until they have been emailed first and then that only applies to that one recipient (some form of aggregated white list). I have tried to track the messages using the built in tools on exchange 2007 but I am not having much joy! Any ideas?
