  • Unable to connect to wireless network

    A real newbie here. Just downloaded Ubuntu 12.10, put on USB stick and have booted it on my other PC after modifying the boot sequence to boot from USB before hard drive where Windows XP lives. Have no problems with Windows and my wireless but not with Ubuntu. The PC is a Dell Latitude D630 laptop. According to Windows XP , the wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card, my IP address is 192.168.0.193, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, assigned by DHCP, SSID is HOME , type 802.11 and default gateway is 192.168.0.1. Ok, back to booting from USB and TRY option, I am Editing Network connections, I have created/configured "Wireless connection 1" with SSID of HOME and the only other thing I have changed is on the "Editing IPV4 routes for Wireless connection 1 I have enterred 192.168.0.193 , netmask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1 Anyways , no go.     We're running freebsd + jail, and lighttpd + fastcgi + php_cgi. We changed our domain and all of a sudden we are getting SPORADIC connection closes. We recently changed our subdomain from www to shop but really there have been no other major changes. When I modified lighttpd's server.max-read-idle from default 60 to 5 the connection close message comes much more rapidly however it has not corrected the issue.

    The Contacts app on OS X isn’t very interesting, but if you can use it to display your Gmail contacts, it’ll get a little bit better. Luckily it’s pretty easy to add your Google / Gmail contacts, but you’ll have to click the mouse a few times and maybe poke at the old keyboard once or twice to type in your email address and password. It’s worth noting that if you set up Gmail in the Mail app you shouldn’t have to do this. Since we prefer Gmail in a browser, that’s why we’re writing this. Or just because we’re procrastinating the book editing that we’re supposed to be doing. Don’t judge. Start by opening the Preferences for the Contacts app by heading up to the Menu bar. Go to Accounts and then click the + sign to add a new one. Choose CardDAV for the account type, use your Gmail username and password, and put google.com as the server address. If you are using two-factor authentication, you’ll need to create a specific password for this account.

    We would like to serve up seo-friendly ajax-driven content. We are following this documentation. Has anyone ever tried to write a 302 redirect into the htaccess file, that takes the '?_escaped_fragment=' string and send that to a static page? For example /snapshot/yourfilename/ How will Google react to this? I've gone through the documentation and it's not very clear. The below quote is from Google's documentation this is what I find. I'm not sure if they are saying that you can redirect the _escaped_fragment_ url to a different static page, or if this is to redirect the hashtag URL to static content? Thoughts? From Google's site: Question: Can I use redirects to point the crawler at my static content? Redirects are okay to use, as long as they eventually get you to a page that's equivalent to what the user would see on the #! version of the page. This may be more convenient for some webmasters than serving up the content directly. If you choose this approach, please keep the following in mind: Compared to serving the content directly, using redirects will result in extra traffic because the crawler has to follow redirects to get the content. This will result in a somewhat higher number of fetches/second in crawl activity. Note that if you use a permanent (301) redirect, the url shown in our search results will typically be the target of the redirect, whereas if a temporary (302) redirect is used, we'll typically show the #! url in search results. Depending on how your site is set up, showing #! may produce a better user experience, because the user will be taken straight into the AJAX experience from the Google search results page.     What is a reasonable goal in terms of traffic for my Flex 3 site: www.brainpinata.com Since I began a couple of months ago, I've gotten roughly 5500 ad views and 280 ad clicks. And the ad revenue is a whopping $4.80. (I don't use Google Adsense). I advertise my site using Google Adwords to try to build traffic. My budget is $10/day. What should I do? a) Push the marketing. Add a blog. Try to get backlinks, contact blogs, start a Facebook page, tweet, etc. b) Google is only indexing the static content in the SWF. The questions/answers are pulled from a mySQL database. So, Google doesn't index 99% of the content. Should I re-do the site in HTML/Javascript and hard-code the questions for each puzzle? (This would be a challenge as I don't know javascript worth squat.) Or should I hard-code the questions in XML and put them in the Flex app? If I put the questions in an XML file it's roughly 500 KB. Other ideas? c) Should I switch ad networks? (I currently get about 100 visitors a day). My ad network pays so little that if I were to make even $500/month, I would need 550,000 ad views/month, which seems impossible. If I go ahead and switch ad networks, I need to find one that allows iFrames as I've got a Flex website. Which ad networks permit their ads to be shown in iFrames? d) Should I cut and run? I put a lot of work into this project and it would really stink to get nothing out of it. I'm looking for some good advice. Looking forward to your suggestions. Thank you. -Laxmidi

  • Cropping images & SEO

    So I have a page with a bunch of images with largely varying sizes. Also the layout of the page is such that the images are all in the shape of square tiles, so just resizing will cause distorted images. What I've been doing previously is when users upload images, I resize and crop them appropriately and display the new image as the thumbnail and load full image when user clicks on it. However, I just realized this is an issue with SEO as google will crawl the thumbnails and stick the thumbnails on Google Images instead of the full images. Is there any way to show a cropped/resized image but have Google Image show the full image? I can do something with css using an enclosing div and overflow:hidden, but I'd imagine the performance on that would be pretty bad. Any suggestions? Thanks! PS. I saw this (Make google index the actual image not the thumbnail), but in my case I have users continuously uploading images, and the database of images is always changing and pretty big (thousands), so sitemap will be pretty unwieldy..

  • How can I use domain masking without having self referral in Google Analytics

    I have one old domain that points to a website's server's ip (let's call it www.oldsite.com). I have a new one, www.newsite.com, that is set up to be forwarded to a specific page on the website. Due to the way the host of newsite.com places the website in a frame, in Google Analystics, the newsite.com is listed as a source rather than the source they were at before hand, causing a self referral. A solution is to edit the code of the iframe as I looked up, but there's no way to really edit the host's masking source code of course. Another solution I did previously was have www.newsite.com point to the address that www.oldsite.come pointed to. It solved the analytics problems, but in exchange, the url masking no longer worked. In the address bar, it came up as www.oldsite.com. Is there a way to make me have url masking and be able to forward to agree with google analytics? The server of the website is hosted on a cloud server, if this is anymore information.

  • OS X can connect to Windows machine, but can't access shared folders

    I can create new folders on my Windows XP machine, set them to "shared". On my Mac, I pick Finder → Go → Connect to Server → smb://192.168.1.4 → Connect → Name / Password. It even shows me all the names of the newly created shared-folders on my PC, but when I try to actually connect to any of them I get connection failed, there was an error connecting Any idea on what would cause that? The fact that it successfully gets so far—to actually showing me my PC share-names—must mean I have 99% of this working correctly, i.e. the physical connection, the IP address, the user name, the password, etc. Still, I can't seem to access the folders themselves. I've tried this with my Windows XP firewall on/off, and Norton AntiVirus on/off. Same problem. Everything did work fine, 4 months ago. Were there any odd OS X or Windows updates released recently? I always apply them all. smbclient on the Mac does correctly find the XP machine, my XP user name, and accepts my XP password. I get the following from that smbclient command: Doing spnego session setup (blob length=16) server didn't supply a full spnego negprot Got challenge flags: ... Got NTLMSSP flags: ... Got NTLMSP flags: ... Domain=[XPMACHINE] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_INSUFF_SERVER_RESOURCES I'm not sure why a standard XP box can't "supply a full spnego negprot". Whatever that means. Using XP's RegEdit to change my IRPStackSize from 11... to 13, 15, 20, 22... still gives that "NT_STATUS_INSUFF_SERVER_RESOURCES" error on the Mac.

  • Wireless connects but can not connect to internet

    I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and I'm having trouble connecting to internet via wifi. Ethernet cable works though. So when I log on it auto logs on to my wifi connection at home but after about a minute or so it gives me a popup: network disabled something about .local domain and something about Avahi network (sorry if you need more on what the popup says I will reboot and look at it again). I am using Atheros wireless card. My laptop is Asus G73SW and on the forum at notebookreview.com G73SW Owner's Lounge people said they had no problem with connecting via wifi from install. Please help me because I would love to keep using this beautiful OS.

    Connecting as either MTP or PTP: neither allows one to see pictures saved as default by phone camera to DCIM folder on external SD card. Similar problems with previous models (e.g. S2) were solvable by 'usb utilities' in wireless & networking settings, but this is no longer present. Other suggestions have mentioned uninstalling various libraries... but I don't wanna just start cutting stuff without knowing it'll help. Any thoughts on how to mount a Samsung Galaxy S3 over USB?

  • How do I find information on who links to my sites?

    I'm trying to figure out if there's a free way to get information on backlinks to my site. I've had webmaster tools and google analytics set up for years. But I can't find access to data about site backlinks in either toolset. Webmaster tools, under 'traffic'-'links to your site' gives me the same message for all of my sites: "No data available". I haven't been able to find anything in GA that gives any information on backlinks. I've heard of using "links:" as an operator in google search, but for each of my sites, this returns either zero or very few results in cases when I know I have many backlinks. Most of the links simple aren't shown. My thinking is that google maintains a graph of who links to my site, so I figured that they might let me see it. But I can't figure out how. I've found this tool on a spammy website: http://www.backlinkwatch.com. It offers more data than google on my backlines, and offers more results in exchange for a paid subscription. The data it offers for free looks good, but the results are limited and the site has popups and obnoxious ads. So, in short: how do I get data on who links to me? Is there a free way?

    Where there is VPN to remote server and then access to the database via local network interface, how can one establish a remote link between one's computer (with a programme such as Visual Studio 2010) and SQL Server (e.g. 2008 R2) ? Any attempts to create a direct link to the SQL Server are blocked. Whilst the SQL Server can be configured to allow external access, this provides its own host of problems. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Inexplicable low ranking [closed]

    I have created two similar websites relating to monetary systems. So far, one appears to be loved by Google and the other hated. I'm struggling to work out why. The successful one is fullreservebanking.com. If you type in "full reserve banking" into Google, my site appears 2nd in the list behind Wikipedia. The unsuccessful one is fractionalreserves.com. If you type in "fractional reserve banking" into Google, it's nowhere to be seen. This is a mystery to me because both sites were created by me with the same design philosophy, both in pure html. Both are packed to the rafters with references to, and information about, their respective subjects. One issue I'm worried may be the cause is to do with the location of the sites. I got a web hosting package from hostmonster.com for fullreservebanking, but fractionalreserves is just an "add-on" which sits on a subdirectory of fullreservebanking. I wonder if Google somehow detects this and treats it as a less significant website?

  • mobile broadband quick connect..how to?

    Hello all, I have a Reliance broadband + mobile broadband connection. It connects fine, but the only problem is it takes more than 2 -3 mins to get the connection started. If I plug in the USB datacard, the network manager applet dothes not show up the mobile broadband connection immediately. It takes a good 2-3 mins to detect the connection before I can select Reliance connection from the dropdown list. Is there any way of getting a shortcut of that connection on the desktop or on the panel? Thanks, Sayantan

  • Yelp, Google's API for restaurants help

    Ok I have looked into this, and I'm not sure if anyone else has experience with it. I'm having termendous difficulties with Yelp and Google's API. To help explain what I am trying to do here is the concept of the website. We would have to pull restaurants based on user distance, and then randomize them based on quality of restaurant based on feedback from review websites (Yelp, Google, urbanspoon, zagat, opentable, kudzu, yahoo - doesn't have to be from all), and feedback from our users (on results page for the random restaurant users can select good recommendation/bad recommendation). There’s a lot we could calculate for our formula. Things that will dictate your results will be based on if you’re at home or work. If you’re at home you will have more time to drive out to the city to grab some dinner or lunch. If you’re at work we would have to recommend restaurants nearby as lunch is typically 30 minutes to a hour. A 30 minute lunch would require take out most likely or quick service. A hour lunch break you could dine in at a local fine dining restaurant. So in a nutshell, user comes to website. Select if they're at home or work, click submit and we will have a random restaurant selected for them to go. If they don't like it they can click retry and a new restaurant can show. The issue I am having is using the API to gather all the restaurants in the US. I know it can be done because there are similiar websites/apps that pull restaurants that are closest to you such as Ness, Alfred, and I believe there's two more but I can't remember the names. Anyone know if this can be accomplish?

  • Windows 2008 Server can't connect to FTP

    I have Windows 2008 Server R2, and I am trying to install FTP services. My problem is I can't connect from outside, FileZilla complains with: Error: Connection timed out Error: Could not connect to server Here is what I did. With the Server Manager, I've installed the Roles FTP Server, FTP Service and FTP Extensibility. In Internet Information Services version 7.5, I've chosen Add FTP Site, enabled Basic Authentication, Allow a user to connect Read and Write. In FTP Firewall support on the main server, just after start page, I've set Data Channel Port Range to 49100-49250 and set the external IP Address as the one I see from outside. If I click on FTP IPv4 Address and Domain Restrictions, and click on Edit Feature Settings, I see that access for unspecified clients is set to Allow, so I click OK without changing those defaults. In FTP SSL Policy, I've set to Require SSL connection, certificate is self signed. I tried to connect with FileZilla from the same host and it works, however it doesn't work remotely, as I said above. I've enabled pfirewall.log, but apparently nothing gets logged. The server is in Amazon EC2, and on the security group inbound firewall rules, I've set that ports 21 and ports 49100-49250 accepts connections from everywhere. What else should I be checking to solve the problem?

    I have a site, which is a spiritual site and has nothing to do with commercial or business thing. It was in the first page with the keyword RADHANATH SWAMI. Then suddenly, in sep'13, the site went out from google search. When I checked my WebmasterTools, I saw that there were 40,000 backlinks from a site named http://freeguestbooks.net. But manual action section in WebmasterToolssaid "No Manual webspam actions found" and till date, it shows the same. Then I contacted the webmaster of freeguestbooks.net and requested him to remove the 40K odd backlinks and he very kindly removed it. The WebmasterTools now shows 21,777 backlinks from this site. But since 2 months, the decrease rate of these backlinks is very slow, almost zero. Again, I had contacted the webmaster of freeguestbooks.net and he confirmed that there are no backlinks pointing to his site. I am also told that my anchor text is over-optimised... Total backlinks to my site as per WebmasterTools is only 24,937 out of which 21,777 are the links from freeguestbooks.net as shown in WebmasterTools. Could an expert suggest a way out to get back into google.... Sajeev, India

  • How to remotely connect using perfmon?

    Suprised there is not a ton of information on google when i search for this but there is not. Lot of people asking the question but i none of them have any good answers. I have a remote computer running hyper-v (server) running a Windows 7 x64 guest (guest). Occasionally i won't be able to remote desktop to guest. I will then remote to server and see that the guest instance is constantly using about 25% of the cpu. WHen i try to connect directly from server i will get the login screen but as soon as i type the password in it will just stay at the windows 7 login screen but the account names will disappear and it will not log in. It responds to pings though. I don't know how else to diagnose other than trying to run perfmon remotely. It only happens like every 3 weeks and i run it 24/7. So i'm trying to run remote desktop remotely. I tested this out on a local vm i have running under vmware. When i try to connect using perfmon to my local vm i get this error: "when attempting to connect to the remote computer the4 following system error occurred: the network path was not found" I found in another past to start the remote registry service and when i start the service i get this error: "No such interface supported" Anyways, how do i remotely connect to another machine with perfmon or if anyone has a better idea how i can diagnose the problem above then let me know.

    Is there any software available for ubuntu that can emulate Windows Media Center for connecting a computer to an xbox? I tried following the xbox wizard, but it says that I need Windows. I just want to be able to choose to show pictures, play music or video on my tv through my xbox instead of my computer. I can currently do something similar using my Samsung phone and wireless TV using AllShare. I just choose which video I want to play and where and it works like magic. The TV my xbox is connected to though doesn't have wireless so I was hoping to use the xbox for similar functionality. Thanks
