Install vim offline

I have Ubuntu 12.04.02 desktop in my college Lab of around 15 pcs with no internet connection. I used to install packages : sudo apt-get install vim It was just fine. But, now I want to install vim locally(i.e.,using a pendrive or CD drive). Where and how can I accomplish this,as I am new to it. Images from remote source - is it possible or is it bad practice?

I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries. I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since image space needed is related to how many images a user might upload, I thought about using cloud services like DropBox, Mega, and Google Drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem with this approach is that downloading the images from the 3rd party service would hamper the user experience due to the increased download times. Is there any way to save images belonging in an image gallery on remote source without hampering the user experience because of speed? Or is this approach really not a good practice?

Queuing rpc calls

i'm designing a system wich listen to json rpc calls from clients, piles it up inside a list, and if it gets full it should store them in a DB and keep recieving calls. My original plan is to listen to the rpc calls from Perl with the json-rpc and put them in the array. The clients do some long polling in another server to get responses as they appear. What is this blocking/noblocking thing? Should i do a script for node.js to listen to the calls? What do you think is a good practice in this case? The objective is to listen as much calls as possible.

Scan-Line Z-Buffering Dilemma

I have a set of vertices in 3D space, and for each I retain the following information: Its 3D coordinates (x, y, z). A list of pointers to some of the other vertices with which it's connected by edges. Right now, I'm doing perspective projection with the projecting plane being XY and the eye placed somewhere at (0, 0, d), with d < 0. By doing Z-Buffering, I need to find the depth of the point of a polygon (they're all planar) which corresponds to a certain pixel on the screen so I can hide the surfaces that are not visible. My questions are the following: How do I determine to which polygon does a pixel belong to so I could use the formula of the plane which contains the polygon to find the Z-coordinate? Are my data structures correct? Do I need to store something else entirely in order for this to work? I'm just projecting the vertices onto the projection plane and joining them with lines based on the pointer lists.

Rollback in Oracle and SQL Server

I have an Oracle background. It was interesting to see how rollback handled in Oracle and SQL Server. There is no begin trans in Oracle. What oracle does is it will store the data in a temporary area called the rollback segments. Untill your issue the commit command the records will be kept there. You can even rollback your update statement by issuing the rollback command. When you issue the commit command the records in the rollback segments are written to the redo log files. The same logic for insert is also applicable except that there is no mirror image of the record kept. In SQL Server, if you want to be able to roll back statement, you neet to start your statement with a "begin tran" . Then, you can rollback a transaction, if this is needed. begin tran update Person set FirstName = 'Arthur' where PersonId = 10 -- select firstname from Person rollback

Write data to SQL Server directly from BizTalk or use external service?

An external source will be sending us XML data that BizTalk will pick up and transform into an internal schema. We need this data to be loaded into a SQL Server database as we're going to expose some of the data to our web front-end via a custom WCF service. The question is: what is the recommended approach for doing something like this? Options we're considering are having BizTalk write to the database directly or having BizTalk call a custom WCF service which would handle the save operation. Another briefly considered idea was having BizTalk write to an MSMQ and have a custom service pull from there and store it in the database. What are some of the guidelines or questions that should be asked in assessing these options? There are concerns related to overhead from calling the extra service, duplication of efforts if the schema is modified in the future (which it will be to some extent), and simply the best way to design within a service-oriented architecture that we're struggling with.

How file permissions are stored in inode?

Suppose there's two pc - "A" and "B". Then if A downloads a files from B , then what would be the file permission of that downloaded file? Is it possible that the downloaded file in A will have an Inode entry with all it's permissions from B & store B's user account as the owner ? If that's the case then is it impossible to change that files permission on A if "others" [as in user-group-others] doesn't have the right to write on that file? e.g. if this is the case , __x __x __x file.txt [On B] then what would be the file permission on A of that same file downloaded from B [e.g. through vsftpd]? __x __x __x file.txt [On A] or rw_x rw_x rw_x file.txt [On A] [i.e. defined by A's default umask value]

How can I manage keyboard shortcuts in 11.10 Oneric?

In 10.04, I've had a keyboard shortcut defined via it's keyboard settings applet. Recently I have upgraded to 11.10 (I use gnome-classic). This shortcut still works, but I can't find it in System Setting's Keyboard applet. This means I don't know how to disable it. Not that it bothers me too much (now, at least), but not being able to control my own computer doesn't seem very pleasant. Where does Ubuntu store my keyboard shortcuts? BTW, I do not use compiz, and I can't find my shortcut in gconf either.

Facebook connect vs. OpenID

I just started working on a new project that has a general login feature. One suggestion in a meeting was to look into Facebook Connect or OpenID as an alternative. I'm curious if there's one that has less of a learning curve, or if they can both be used on the same site. Also, when you use either, do you have them initially create the account and just get a verify True/False back that you then use to set up a local user account? I what about forgotten passwords? I'm kind of curious as to best practices for integrated this type of login with a "traditional" one where you store the user info yourself. Thanks, D

pop up html as javascript string instead of hidden div for seo [closed]

Possible Duplicate: How bad is it to use display: none in CSS? I have heard that using display:none or visibility:hidden css properties are not a very good idea for seo purposes. I have about 4 different pop up windows to display and each one has about 20 words inside it. I can create hidden divs. Another option is to store div html elements as javascript string. In this way pop up html elements will be generated from javascript string. This will be still faster than using ajax since the data is static. Is this method absolutely safe for SEO? P.S.: I was just asking about similar question on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12389075/storing-data-in-javascript-array-for-further-use, but this one is different, it is about static data and about SEO.

Change guest username

Now, looking around on Google shows me some ways in which to customise the settings of the Guest session. But, I would love a way to change the name of the Guest account. Basically, I'm planning to take some laptops out to a school in Africa and want to rename the "Guest" account in 14.04 to "Student" so the students use that. They tend to store stuff on USB sticks and they're using the Guest account so they can't break anything. EDIT: I'll expand on this slightly. They're using the guest account simply for the reason it doesn't save anything after logoff. This was a specific thing the teachers have asked for. I don't mind if the actual username remains guest behind the scenes, but as long as it shows up as Student to on Unity. Any way of going about this?

Combo box filter on Extjs4.1.3

I have created a window with combo box. Combo configuration is xtype :'combo', fieldLabel : 'Command', labelAlign : 'right', id :'commandInputComboId', store : commandStore, displayField: 'command', valueField : 'id', width : 500, enableKeyEvents : true, allowblank : false, queryMode: 'local', typeAhead : true, triggerAction: 'all', query filter works for normal data. But I have data with escape chars like < because I need to show it as '<' for ex my data is <get-all-users> Filter apply only when I type < not for <. How can apply filter on this data?

UEC - Unable to SSH into instance, asks for password

I am attempting to set up a private cloud using Ubuntu 10.04.4 Server. I am following the tutorial at http://cssoss.wordpress.com/2010/11/26/eucabook-v1-1/ . All steps go on perfectly apart from that I am unable to SSH into the running instances. I have created the instance using a public key and try to SSH into instance using the private key. However it asks for password. I am able to ping the instance though. I have tried using both the pre-built images from the store as well as custom built images. Several people seem to have the same problem but there does not seem to be any working solution. Thanks in advance.

What does a media server need?

I want to buy a new PC to be used as a media server that streams HD movies, music to any wireless device on my network (laptop, desktop, TV, etc.). I was wondering about the PC hardware's specifications that I need to have so that it can work just fine? (It will be wireless) Is there any tutorial showing how it could be done? And the security - how can I secure it? As well as I need it to to host my emails. I mean I have many emails. And sometimes I'm using desktop, sometimes laptop.. so is it possible to make the server store a copy of my emails, attachments, all sent items (whether they were from desktop or laptop)?

Is deserializing complex objects instead of creating them a good idea, in test setup?

I'm writing tests for a component that takes very complex objects as input. These tests are mixes of tests against already existing components, and test-first tests for new features. Instead of re-creating my input objects (this would be a large chunk of code) or reading one from our data store, I had the thought to serialize a live instance of one of these objects, and just deserialize it into test setup. I can't decide if this is a reasonable idea that will save effort in long run, or whether it's the worst idea that I've ever had, causing those that will maintain this code will hunt me down as soon as they read it. Is deserialization of inputs a valid means of test setup in some cases? To give a sense of scale of what I'm dealing with, the size of serialization output for one of these input objects is 93KB. I'm reading "Professional Team Foundation Server 2010" by Wrox, and in an advantages/disadvantages list, the said: "Like CVS, SVN makes use of .svn directories inside the source folders to store state of the local working copy, and to allow synchronization with the server. However, it can have the affect of polluting the local source tree, and can cause performance issues wiht very large projects or files." What does the bit about pollution mean? I've used SVN for C# & ASP.NET projects for a long time and haven't encountered any problems. What probably does this quote think I should have been watching out for?

Why a write-enable ring?

Here's an "interview question" that while ostensibly about hardware really does inform a software design principal as well. Computers used to (still do I guess, somewhere) use magnetic tape reels to store data. There was a plastic accessory you could attach to a tape reel called a "write-enable ring". If the tape had such a ring, the tape drive allowed writing to the tape... if not, it only allowed read access. Why was the choice to design the system in this way? Why not have a "write protect ring" instead, with the opposite effect?

Use of another country domain name can influence search engines results?

I'm studing a way to create my company domain based on it's name. Consider that my company's name is Another Store and I want to register a domain like anothersto.re - this is just an example. That domain is strictly chosen by marketing. What happens is that my company is stabilished in Brazil and our domain here is .br. The .re domain stands for an island near France so haves nothing to do with my country. If that domain is chosen what it can imply about SEO questions? Did it will have any influence on search engines results considering that they look over user's region? This kind of domain use became common between modern companies - and marketing strategies - and that is why I'm considering it.

TGA loader: reverse height

I wrote a TGA image loader in Java which is working perfectly for files created with GIMP as long as they are saved with the option "origin" set to "Top Left" (Note: Actually TGA files are meant to be stored upside down - "Bottom Left" in GIMP). My problem is that I want my image loader to be capable of reading all different kinds of TGAs, so my question is, how do I flip the image upside down? Note that I store all image data inside a one-dimensional byte array, because OpenGL (glTexImage2D to be specific) requires it that way. Thanks in advance.
