• Performance Comparison of Shell Scripts vs high level interpreted langs (C#/Java/etc.)

  Hi all, First - This is not meant to be a 'which is better, ignorant nonionic war thread'... But rather, I generally need help in making an architecture decision / argument to put forward to my boss. Skipping the details - I simply just would love to know and find the results of anyone who has done some performance comparisons of Shell vs [Insert General Purpose Programming Language (interpreted) here), such as C# or Java... Surprisingly, I have spent some time on Google on searching here to not find any of this data. Has anyone ever done these comparisons, in different use-cases; hitting a database like in a XYX # of loops doing different types of SQL (Oracle pref, but MSSQL would do) queries such as any of the CRUD ops - and also not hitting database and just regular 50k loop type comparison doing different types of calculations, and things of that nature? In particular - for right now, I need to a comparison of hitting an Oracle DB from a shell script vs, lets say C# (again, any GPPL thats interpreted would be fine, even the higher level ones like Python). But I also need to know about standard programming calculations / instructions/etc... Before you ask 'why not just write a quick test yourself? The answer is: I've been a Windows developer my whole life/career and have very limited knowledge of Shell scripting - not to mention *nix as a whole.... So asking the question on here from the more experienced guys would be grealty beneficial, not to mention time saving as we are in near perputual deadline crunch as it is ;). • Can knowing C actually hurt the code you write in higher level languages?

  The question seems settled, beaten to death even. Smart people have said smart things on the subject. To be a really good programmer, you need to know C. Or do you? I was enlightened twice this week. The first one made me realize that my assumptions don't go further than my knowledge behind them, and given the complexity of software running on my machine, that's almost non-existent. But what really drove it home was this Slashdot comment: The end result is that I notice the many naive ways in which traditional C "bare metal" programmers assume that higher level languages are implemented. They make bad "optimization" decisions in projects they influence, because they have no idea how a compiler works or how different a good runtime system may be from the naive macro-assembler model they understand. Then it hit me: C is just one more abstraction, like all others. Even the CPU itself is only an abstraction! I've just never seen it break, because I don't have the tools to measure it. I'm confused. Has my mind been mutilated beyond recovery, like Dijkstra said about BASIC? Am I living in a constant state of premature optimization? Is there hope for me, now that I realized I know nothing about anything? Is there anything to know, even? And why is it so fascinating, that everything I've written in the last five years might have been fundamentally wrong? To sum it up: is there any value in knowing more than the API docs tell me? • Position a div relative to a top-level container?

  I'm trying to model an HTML document which only contains div elements positioned in absolute. For each div, properties left and top are precalculated wrt. the top-level div, but a problem occurs with nested divs since according to the CSS standard an element is positioned relative to its first ancestral element whose positioning is either relative or absolute. Does anyone know any workaround? EDIT: small code snippet that demonstrates the problem <html> <body style="background-color: #444444"> <div style="position: relative; background-color: white;"> <div style="position: absolute; background-color: red; width: 4cm; height: 3cm; top: 1cm">div 1 <div style="position: absolute; background-color: green; top: 4cm"> div 1.1</div> </div> </div> </body> </html> The green div is expected to be positioned right after the red div, instead there is a gap of 1cm in between.

• How do I add the Java Api Documentation to Eclipse?

  Hi I have downloaded Java API documentation from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html#docs and have supposedly attached it to Eclipse using the Window-Preferences-Java-Installed JREs-Edit-"Select rt.jar"-Javadoc Location AND the location has been accepted and "Validates" just fine. However, for the life of me, I can't get Eclipse to show the Javadocs in the tooltip whene I hover over an item (for example in the declaration of an ArrayList). I have also restarted Eclipse in attempts to get it to work what am I doing wrong? Thank you

  Hello everyone I'm trying to use APIKit to scan my codes to detect if there is private API. apiscanner should run as ./apiscanner ~/Desktop/MyPath/myapp.app I used command 'cd' go to the directory where apiscanner is. But if I call ./apiscanner ~/Desktop/MyPath/MyApp.app on terminal it reports Last login: Sun Jun 13 07:22:07 on ttys002 unknown required load command 0x80000022 Trace/BPT trap logout Even if I copy the files apiscanner and doit to MyPath, then execute, I get the same problem. • Wireless card power management

  I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this? • How do I use the Windows API Code Pack in VB.net 2010 Express?

  Hi all, I recently downloaded the Windows API code pack for .net, and seeing there was VB.net examples inside there, I opened them up. Upon building I get a warning that the referenced components 'Core' and 'Shell' could not be found. Looking in the code pack folder I see there are no DLLs at all, but instead a whole load of C# sources. Do I have to download C# Express (which I want to avoid) to use the code pack or are there precompiled DLLs somewhere?
