  Written by Guest Blogger: Maureen Clifford, Sr Product Marketing Manager, Oracle The pendulum of the regulatory clock is constantly in motion, albeit often not in any particular rhythm.  Nevertheless, given what many insurers have been through economically, any movement can send shock waves through critical innovation and operational plans.  As pointed out in Deloitte’s 2012 Global Insurance Outlook, the impact of regulatory reform can cause major uncertainty in the area of costs.  As the reality of increasing government regulations settles in, the change that comes along with it creates more challenges in compliance and ultimately on delivering the optimum return on investment.  The result of this changing environment is a proliferation of compliance projects that must be executed with an already constrained set of resources, budget and time. Insurers are confronted by the need to gain visibility into all of their compliance efforts and proactively manage them. Currently that is very difficult to do as these projects often are being managed by groups across the enterprise and they lack a way to coordinate their efforts and drive greater synergies.  With limited visibility and equally limited resources it is no surprise that reporting on project status and determining realistic completion of these projects is only a dream. As a result, compliance deadlines are missed, penalties are incurred, credibility with key stakeholders and the public is jeopardized and returns and competitive advantage go unrealized. Insurers need to ask themselves some key questions: Do I have “one stop” visibility into all of my compliance efforts?  If not, what can I do to change that? What is top priority and how does that impact my already taxed resources? How can I figure out how to best balance my resources to get these compliance projects done as well as keep key innovation and operational efforts on track? How can ensure that I have all the requisite documentation for each compliance project I undertake? Dealing with complying with regulatory efforts is a necessary evil. Don't let the regulatory pendulum sideline your efforts to generate the greatest return on investment for your key stakeholders.

• WordPress: can't access WordPress.com and other external sites?

  Hello, I recently started a WordPress blog using hosting at MyDomain (they offer the application "natively"). The blog works fine, however I have two plugins I can't seem to install correctly. First, the WordPress.com Stats plugin requires the API Key. When I input it, I get the following message: Error from last API Key attempt: Your blog was unable to connect to WordPress.com. Please ask your host for help. (transport error - could not open socket: 110 Connection timed out) Second, the Akismet plugin is not configured. When I go to Akismet page to insert my API key, it has the following message: There was a problem connecting to the Akismet server. Please check your server configuration. I assume the two issues are related... I approached my hosting provider about the subject and all they said is that they don't support WordPress, only provide means to install it. To clarify, up to this point I have only been able to install plugins that don't require an API key. What can I do to diagnose the problem and fix it? As a work-around, are there comparable stats and anti-spam plugins that don't require an API key? Many thanks.

This allows users to access Google data free of charge and indirectly gives Google a strong competitive advantage of other competitors along with the accuracy of the search results. There is also a strong focus on the accuracy of search results and the speed in which they are returned to the end-user. Quality function deployment (QFD) is a structured method used to help connect user needs to the design features of a project proposed to address those needs. This method is particularly useful in accounting for needs that are not easily articulated or precisely defined according to the U. S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration. Due to the fact that QFD is so customer driven Google is always in a constant state of change in attempt to reengineer its search algorithms, and other dependant systems so that end-users requirements are constantly being met. Value engineering is a key example of this, Google is constantly trying to improve all aspects of its products, improve system maintainability, and system interoperability. Bridgefield Group defines value engineering as an organized methodology that identifies and selects the lowest lifecycle cost options in design, materials and processes that achieves the desired level of performance, reliability and customer satisfaction. In addition, it seeks to remove unnecessary costs in the above areas and is often a joint effort with cross-functional internal teams and relevant suppliers. Common issues that appear when developing large scale systems like Google’s search applications include modular design of a product and/or service and providing accurate value analysis. A design approach that adheres to four fundamental tenets of cohesiveness, encapsulation, self-containment, and high binding to design a system component as an independently operable unit subject to change is how the Open System Joint Task Force defines modular design. More specifically M. S. Schmaltz defines modular software design as having a large collection of statements strung together in one partition of in-line code; we segment or divide the statements into logical groups called modules. Each module performs one or two tasks, and then passes control to another module. By breaking up the code into "bite-sized chunks", so to speak, we are able to better control the flow of data and control. This is especially true in large software systems. Value analysis is a process to evaluate products and services based on effectiveness, safety, and cost. Value analysis involves assessing the quality as well as the cost of a product or service as defined by the Healthcare Financial Management Association.  “Operations Management deals with the design and management of products, processes, services and supply chains. It considers the acquisition, development, and utilization of resources that firms need to deliver the goods and services their clients want.” (MIT,2010) Google, Inc encourages an open environment between all employees, also known as Googlers. This is reinforced by a cross-section team or cross-functional teams comprised from multiple departments assigned to every project so that every department like marketing, finance, and quality assurance has input on every project. In addition, Google is known for their openness to new ideas regardless of the status or seniority of an employee. In fact, Google allows for 20% of an employee’s time can be devoted to developing new ideas and/or pet projects. HumTech.com defines a cross-functional team as a collection of people with varied levels of skills and experience brought together to accomplish a task. As the name implies, Cross-Functional Team members come from different organizational units. Cross-Functional Teams may be permanent or ad hoc. Google’s search application product strategy primarily focuses on mass customization. This is allows Google to create a base search application and allows results to be returned to the end-users quickly based on specific parameters and search settings. In addition, they also store the data that is returned in case other desire the same results based on other end-users supplying the same customized settings. This allows Google to appear to render search results in virtually real-time to the user while allowing for complete customization of the searching criteria. Greg Vogl, a professor at Uganda Martyrs University, defines mass customization as when a business gives its customers the opportunity to tailor its products or services to the customer's specifications. The IT staff at Google play a key role in ensuring that the search application’s product strategy is maintained simply because the IT staff designs, develops, and maintains all of their proprietary applications. • Force Capistrano to ask for password

  I am deploying using Capistrano to a new server and having the following issue. Currently, I cannot add an SSH key to the server to log in with so I must use password authentication. However, I do have a key for another server saved in my local user account's .ssh directory. Here is the error I get when I try to log in: C:\Web\CampMaRabu>cap deploy:setup * executing `deploy:setup' * executing "mkdir -p /home2/webapp1 /home2/webapp1/releases /home2/webapp1/shared /home2/webapp1/shared/system /home2/webapp1/shared/log /home2/webapp1/shared/pids" servers: ["myserver.example.com"] connection failed for: myserver.example.com (OpenSSL::PKey::PKeyError: not a public key "C:/Users/MyAccount/.ssh/id_rsa.pub") How can I get Capistrano to ignore the existence of the key I have and let me log in with a password instead? I tried adding set :password, "myp@ssw0rd" to deploy.rb and it didn't help.

• Automount in Ubuntu 9.10

  Hi, By default Ubuntu doesn't mount internal NTFS hard drives automatically. A fstab solution not working properly, because of conflicts with the "intelligent" mount system. If I add my hd in fstab and reboot - it will be mounted. But if I go to nautilus, open places panel and click eject button (unmount) and than click on hd again to mount it, I will get an error. In 9.04 to solve this problem you need to modify hal rules in /etc/hal/... preferences.fdi in my case I modified it for only one drive. <device> - <match key="storage.hotpluggable" bool="false"> - <match key="storage.removable" bool="false"> <merge key="storage.automount_enabled_hint" type="bool">false</merge> - <match key="storage.model" string="ST3250310NS"> <merge key="storage.automount_enabled_hint" type="bool">true</merge> </match> </match> </match> </device> But this is not working in 9.10 - devs removed this function from hal to devkit-disk or udev? I don't know. Could you please tell me where automount rules are stored in 9.10? And how to create new rules, and what program controls automount in 9.10?

• openvpn: after changing to server mode, client does not create TUN device

  i had a previously working configuration with the config files used in a previous question However, i've changed this now to the following configuration using server mode, everything on the logs seem fine, however the client doesn't create any tun interface, so i don't have anything to connect to, presumably, i need to add or push some route commands, but i don't have any idea at this point what i need to do. • CYGWin and sshd. Accepts authentication, but won't connect

  Everything I find relating to this is the "ssh-exchange-identification:" error. This doesn't happen for me. I get two lines: Connection to localhost closed by remote host. • OpenVPN and TomatoVPN

  Wondering if someone can help me with the following. I have updated my Linksys router with TomatoVPN and used the following config: Interface Type:TAP Protocol:UDP Port:1195 Firewall Custom Authorization Mode:Static Key I have then inserted the static key generated in OpenVPN saved and started the service. connect.ovpn. # Use the following to have your client computer send all traffic through your router # (remote gateway) remote (entered my DNS/DHCP servers external IP address here) port 1195 dev tap secret static.key.txt proto udp comp-lzo route-gateway 192.168.1.1 redirect-gateway float I've then placed my static key in a file in the same directory as your connect.ovpn (static.key.txt) Now OpenVPN is installed on a laptop that I use at home. I have plugged in the laptop to my home connection and started connect.ovpn The Local Area Connection is connected as 'Home Network 3' - and when I start OpenVPN it is connected as 'Local Area Connection 2' and this is showing as 'Unidentified Network' and it appears there is no network access. TAP-Win32 Adapter V9 appears to be the adaptors name and the IP and DNS properties are set to automatic. If I open up the OpenVPN GUI it shows an error message saying "Connecting to connect has failed". Looking at the error message behind this pop-up one line says "TCP/UDP Socket bind failed on local address [undef]:1195 Address already in use [WSAEADDRINUSE] Could anyone possibly help me further with this please?

• Using Unity – Part 6

  This is the last of the ‘Unity’ series and I’ll be talking about generics here. If you’ve been following the previous articles, you must have noticed that I’m just adding more and more ‘Product’ classes to the project. I’ll change that trend in this blog where I’ll be adding an ICaller interface and a Caller class. 1: public interface ICaller<T> where T : IProduct 2: { 3: string CallMethod<T>(string typeName); 4: } 5:  6: public class Caller<T> : ICaller<T> where T:IProduct 7: { 8: public string CallMethod<T>(string typeName) 9: { 10: //... 11: } 12: } We’ll fill-in the implementation of the CallMethod in a few, but first, here’s what we’re going to do: create an instance of the Caller class pass it the IProduct as a generic parameter in the CallMethod method, we’ll use Unity to dynamically create an instance of IProduct implemented object I need to add the config information for ICaller and Caller types. 1: <typeAlias alias="ICaller`1" type="ProductModel.ICaller`1, ProductModel" /> 2: <typeAlias alias="Caller`1" type="ProductModel.Caller`1, ProductModel" /> The .NET Framework’s convention to express generic types is ICaller`1, where the digit following the "`" matches the number of types contained in the generic type. I then create an instance of an ICaller and pass the typeName to it. Now, we’ll fill in the blank for the CallMethod method (sorry for the naming guys). 1: public string CallMethod<T>(string typeName) 2: { 3: IUnityContainer unityContainer = HttpContext.Current.Application["UnityContainer"] as IUnityContainer; 4: T productInstance = unityContainer.Resolve<T>(typeName); 5: return ((IProduct)productInstance).WriteProductDetails(); 6: } This is where I’ll resolve the IProduct by passing the type name and calling the WriteProductDetails() method. With all things in place, when I run the application and choose different radio buttons, the output should look something like below:          Basically this is how generics come to play in Unity.
