• Database permissions and ORMs

  I've been using .NET's Entity Framework a lot lately and have absolutely no wish to go back to using Stored Procedures. Been shocked though that the company I'm building this project for had a policy where applications were only given accounts that only had permissions to access stored procedures! Apparently, they believe that there's a security risk involved in allowing applications to access the tables/views directly. I don't get this. My first question is, can someone enlighten me as to what kind of security risk applications having direct access to the database may pose? AND If that's the case, are there any other ORM solutions that can provide a workaround to this (I can't think of any logical possibility atm) that would allow me to circumvent the restrictions on the user account to be assigned to me? OR is my understanding that I'd need direct permissions for the tables and views wrong?

• Firefox: how to apply XSLT from plugin to opened XML document? (how to replace document with another

  Hi! I've developed a plug-in for Firefox, that can read and manipulate the content of the currently opened document. I would like to apply a XLST to the document in case it is XML. I have no problem to read the XML document and apply a XSLT to it in memory, however, I have no idea of how to replace the existing document with the newly created one. Thus, I see two possible scenarios: a) I replace the document with the result of the transformation b) I apply the XSLT directly to the XML All my attempts to realize one of both possible solutions have failed... • How to return the full file path in a C# / ASP.NET web application?

  This should be really simple, but I have tried many solutions posted on the internet so I thought I'd give this a try here. I have a VS 2008 web application that I need to capture the full file path (directories and file name) from the selected file. So user selects a file and then clicks on one of the buttons which transfers control to my code for processing. So how do I get the file path? I can get the file name, but not the path. Thanks!

But these functions can only check if one point is inside a poly. I have a query where the PiP part should only be one part of the query and check for x points inside a polygon. • Android programming: Authentication and data exchange with Java EE

  I am having a Java application running in a Tomcat server using Spring, Hibernate, etc. and a two web interfaces, one implemented in Tapestry 5 and the other one using Flex with BlazeDS and Spring-BlazeDS. In my first android application I would now like to log in to the server and retrieve some data. I´m wondering how I could achieve this in a secure way. First of all I need to know which technology is the best to retrieve data from the server and how can I restrict the access to users only that have been successfully authenticated. With what I read until now I would try to implement a HTTPServlet on the server and make server calls via HTTP Client. In the servlet I could probably use the HTTPSession to check if the request comes from an authenticated user. And the data I would try to send serialized (JSON). Unfortunately, I´ve never done those things and maybe I´m on the wrong way and there are more comfortable solutions.

• Generate encoding String according to creation order.

  I need to generate encoding String for each item I inserted into the database. for example: x00001 for the first item x00002 for the sencond item x00003 for the third item The way I chose to do this is counting the rows. Before I insert the third item, I count against the database, I know there're already 2 rows, so the next encoding is ended with 3. But there is a problem. If I delete the second item, the forth item will not be the x00004,but x00003. I can add additional columns to table, to store the next encoding, I don't know if there's other better solutions ?

  hopefully the question doesn't sound stupid, but there are lots of examples out there of achieving certain things in javascript/dom using jQuery. Using jQuery is not always an option (or even a want) which can make understanding the examples of javascript solutions written in jQuery hard. Is there an easy way to convert jQuery code to regular javascript? I guess without having to access or understand the jQuery source code... edit (future readers): pretend there is a logical reason why jQuery isn't available! edit (almost 3 years since I asked this): there is no logical reason why jQuery isn't available :P

• How to partition a plane

  Let's say I have a fixed number (X) of points, e.g. coordinates within a given plane (I think you can call it a 2-D point cloud). These points should be partitioned into Y polygons where Y < X. The polygons should not overlap. It would be wonderful if the polygons were konvex (like a Voronoi diagram). Imagine it like locations forming countries. For example, I have 12 points and want to create 3 polygons with 4 points each. I thought about creating a grid which covers the points. Then iterate across the points, assigning them to the closest grid cells. Maybe I miss the obvious? I am sure there are better solutions. Tests In the MVC4 project I have added a web.config file with the connection string as <add name="EfDbContext" connectionString="Data Source=.;Initial Catalog=SportsStore;Integrated Security=true;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> I have a class by name EfDbContext in Domain project which inherits DbContext. When I view the website in browser, I get the server not found error. I debugged the EfDbContext class and found that the Database.Connection.ConnectionString is set to \SqlExpress with database as EfDbContext. Why is that?

• What strategies are efficient to handle concurrent reads on heterogeneous multi-core architectures?

  I am tackling the challenge of using both the capabilities of a 8 core machine and a high-end GPU (Tesla 10). I have one big input file, one thread for each core, and one for the the GPU handling. The Gpu thread, to be efficient, needs a big number of lines from the input, while the Cpu thread needs only one line to proceed (storing multiple lines in a temp buffer was slower). The file doesn't need to be read sequentially. I am using boost. My strategy is to have a mutex on the input stream and each thread locks - unlocks it. This is not optimal because the gpu thread should have a higher precedence when locking the mutex, being the fastest and the most demanding one. I can come up with different solutions but before rush into implementation I would like to have some guidelines. What approach do you use / recommend ?

  I have a listbox that is databound to a Collection of objects. The listbox is configured to display an identifier property of each object. I would like to show a tooltip with information specific to the item within the listbox that is being hovered over rather than one tooltip for the listbox as a whole. I am working within WinForms and thanks to some helpful blog posts put together a pretty nice solution, which I wanted to share. I'd be interested in seeing if there's any other elegant solutions to this problem, or how this may be done in WPF.

• I can't get the MapsDemo that comes with "Google APIs by Google Inc, Android API8, revision 2" to work

  I have tried everything according to instructions to get the MapsDemo to work on API8. I followed all the certificate signing instructions and all I get is a blank (blue) screen on the emulator. I see that people have been having the same issues but all the suggested solutions boil down to the certificate signing and that has not worked for me. One guy on the Internet even said he got it to work but never said how!!!! So, I thought I'd try the MapsDemo that comes with "Google APIs by Google Inc, Android API7, revision 1". There I saw the map come up on the emulator but only once. That one time it came up clearly and I was able to pan it but after exiting the app and trying it again, it no longer worked. Now all I get is some faint outlines that makes it look like it's trying to work but for some reason is not successful. I am running on Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and using Eclipse Helios. Please help, Hans

• How can I deal with the ICE60 warning in WiX?

  Good Afternoon, I have created a WiX project that installs a bunch of different EXEs and DLLs. Unfortunatly when I build the project I receive the following warning for each one of them: ICE60: The file fileName is not a Font, and its version is not a companion file reference. It should have a language specified in the Language column. I have found examples and possible solutions for this and each time it is suggested to set the DefaultLanguage tag to 0 in order to fix the warning. Once doing that I then get this warning: The DefaultLanguage '0' was used for file 'fileName' which has no language or version. For unversioned files, specifying a value for DefaultLanguage is not neccessary and it will not be used when determining file versions. Remove the DefaultLanguage attribute to eliminate this warning. So this leads me to the question of how can I handle this warning? Thanks in advance for any and all help given.

• Win32 script environment for testing http redirects?

  The past few days I've been working with setting up an Apache server on Windows. The server is supposed to host several .htaccess files, each redirecting (or, in some cases, proxying) to different hosts. I want to create tests for these redirectons, and the solution I'm currently considering is a CGI script running on the same server, sending GET requests to it and verifying that it gets the correct redirection headers back. A scripting solution (vscript/jscript) seems worth exploring, but so far I've only managed to rule out Microsoft.XMLHTTP because it follows the redirect "behind the scenes". Are there any libraries or other solutions already present on a reasonably standard Windows Server that can do this kind of low-level HTTP work? If not, any other suggestions of simple environments to set up for verifying redirects?

  Given the above dynamically generated text (meaning that I can't just use an image), I am trying to recreate the design using just html and css selectors. I would like to just use a single h4 with the containing text, but am open to other solutions. I would prefer to not use absolute positioning, but again, if that is the only way, then so be it. I have tried surrounding with span tags, but those are inline elements that don't have an inherent width. The h4 will be nested within a div, though not always of the same class or id. Any ideas or resources to get me started?

  Hello, I'm developing a JEE application to run on Glassfish: Database (javaDB, MS SQL, MySQL or Oracle) EJB layer with JPA (Toplink essentials - from Glassfish) for database access JSF/Icefaces based web UI accessing the EJB layer The application will have a lot of concurrent web client, so I want to run it on different physical servers and use a load-balancer. My problem is now how to keep the applications synchronized. I intend to set up multiple servers, each running Glassfish with my EAR app installed. Whenever on one of the servers data is added to or removed from the database (via JPA, no direct SQL queries), this change should be reflected in the JPA layer on the other servers. I've been looking around for solutions to this, but couldn't find anything I really like (the full Toplink from Oracle claims to have a solution, but don't know). Doing a refresh before every access to a JPA entity could work, but is far from efficient. Are there any patterns, libraries, ... that could help here? Thanks a lot!

• g:countrySelect with full country name as value

  I want to store the exact country name using g:countrySelect. Example Germany instead of DEU. It is the value in the drop down menu. The drop down text is Germany but when it saves it to the database it changes back to the country code. Sorry if I am somewhat naive but I have been searching for almost 3 hours for solutions and it isn't well documented at the grails website. I could opt for any alternative even ajax. Just to have an easy way to display a list of countries and will be able to store the REAL NAME of the country NOT country code. Thank you!

  Hi. I am developing an application in PHP on Linux/Apache. I want to be able to schedule PHP jobs (scripts) for execution at some specific time in the future from within the application. I know that many people will recommend cron and at, but first of all I don't need recurrence (cron) and secondly and most importantly, I need the solution to be able to scale. At was not designed with race condititions in mind, and if two users try to add a job at the same time one or both may fail. It's also important that jobs are executed at their specified time, and not just 'polled' once per minute or so. Can anyone please suggest solutions for this task? Thank you.

• Ubuntu makes noise and heat when AC charger is inserted

  I have an issue with heat and noise on my laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 installed. The thing is that when I have the AC charger plugged into the laptop, it automatically goes to "boost mode" or something. And when the laptop is on battery mode, the heat and noise is reduced shortly. I want the laptop to be on battery mode as general and "boost mode" as an option if more power is needed. Any solutions? I have installed tlp that doesn't seen to have any effect.

• Cannot move ckeditor 4 selection to beginning

  I've been exploring numerous solutions in stackoverflow and elsewhere to try to get ckeditor 4 to scroll to the top after I've programmatically added a number of pages to it, using CKEditor's InsertHtml function. After adding my html, which looks fine, I want to position the cursor at the beginning. Here's one of a variety of things I've tried without success: function MoveCaretToStart(myEditor) { var range = new CKEDITOR.dom.range( editor.document ); range.selectNodeContents(editor.document.getBody()); range.moveToElementEditStart(range.root); // also tried range.collapse(true); range.select(); } ... MoveCaretToStart(CKEDITOR.instances['myEditor']); // which already has contents in it This doesn't throw any errors, but also doesn't move the cursor position (it remains at the end of the doc). I thought this one would be easy, but it sure hasn't been. Any help appreciated.

• OutputPath ignored on projects being build by TFS 2010

  I have installed TFS2010 Beta 2 with default settings and configured a CI build with a solution containing the indivial projects. My *.cspoj files could have: <OutputPath>bin\debug\</OutputPath> Or alternatively: <OutDir>bin\debug\</OutDir> When the build server is done building and running tests etc. all the assemblies are placed in the root of the build drop off folder. How do I configure the build to keep the outputpath or outdir in my projects and store the assemblies and content in the matching folder structure( builddropfolder\bin\debug\ )? I have found a number of post on this most of them relates to TFS 2008 but I have not found solutions for TFS 2010. Perhaps it is possible to solve this in the new workflow file for the buildserver?

  Hello everyone, I have two SQL Server 2008 Enterprise databases (on two machines), and one of the databases is master database and another database is slave database (master database is read/write, slave database is readonly). I want to have daily update from master database to slave database (i.e. new data inserted/updated/deleted in master database could be synchronized to slave database daily or manually controlled). The effect I want to create is shown on this page Requirements I don't want to use images I don't mind using CSS3 It should be easy to align the whole thing in the center (which makes it harder to use position: absolute;). It's going to be content below the boxed content (which makes it harder to use position: absolute;). If it's possible without too much position: absolute; it's better. I prefer table free solutions.   i was wondering if there is a data structure optimized to count frequencies against data that is stored in a database table-like format. for example, the data comes in a (comma) delimited format below. col1, col2, col3 x, a, green x, b, blue ... y, c, green now i simply want to count the frequency of col1=x or col1=x and col2=green. i have been storing the data in a database table, but in my profiling and from empirical observation, database connection is the bottle-neck. i have tried using in-memory database solutions too, and that works quite well; the only problem is memory requirements and quirky init/destroy calls. also, i work mainly with java, but have experience with .net, and was wondering if there was any api to work with "tabular" data in a linq way using java. any help is appreciated.
