• Looking for fast "Find in Files" program

  I currently have a directory with 98,000 individual archive transaction files. I need to search those files for user input strings and have the option to open the files as it finds them or at the end of the search. I'm using Notepad++ currently and, while functional, it's quite slow. I thought about writing my own, but I am only familiar with .NET and I'm a beginner. Also, I'm not sure how efficient that would be compared to NP++. This tool would be used again and again so the dev time would definitely be worth it if it came to that. Is there some other tool out there that's already developed that would accomplish this?

While i can replace a known string, i have no idea how to do a sed wildcard in this case- So- how do i do that?

• Search files for text matching format of a Unix directory

  I am attempting to search through all the files in a directory for text matching the pattern of any arbitrary directory. The output of this I hope to use to make a list of all directories referenced in the files (this part I think I can figure out on my own). I have looked at various regex resources and made my own expression that seems to work in the browser based tool but not with grep in the command line. /\w+[(/\w+)]+ My understanding so far is the above expression will look for the beginning / of a directory then look for an indeterminate number of characters before looking for a repeating block of the same thing. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

  I am attempting to limit the number of results that are displayed as a result of dynamic result clustering on the Google Search Appliance. I've looked through the XSLT, but I've only come across the following two user-modifiable options: <!-- *** dyanmic result cluster options *** --> <xsl:variable name="show_res_clusters">1</xsl:variable> <xsl:variable name="res_cluster_position">right</xsl:variable> Are there more options that I'm unaware of that I could use to limit the results? Is there another way that I'm missing?

• Using search and replace to remove line breaks in Open Office

  Hi, I've imported a document into Open Office and it has a number of hard returns in wrong places. In MS Word, I could use the search and replace to simply get rid of them all easily, but Open Office's earch won't find them. I tried /n with the 'use regular expressions' box checked, but it seems that only looks for 'shift-enter' breaks and not ordinary hard returns. Is there another way to remove them all quickly, or do I have to go manually through the document and remove each one individually. This is a surprising oversight for Open Office.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 and OSX 10.5/.6/.7, Search, Spotlight

  I'm handling a migration from a on old mac server to a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine running a 12TB(10 usable) RAID5 server. It's using an SMB share and now the OSX 10.5/.6 users can search sometimes it works but takes up to 10 minutes. The OSX 10.7 machine seems to be fine. I've looked in the root of the shared drive for a .Spotlight-V100 file (ls -a) but it doesn't seem to be there. mdutil says indexing is on for that volume and I have cleared the index using mdutil -E /Volumes/MeSharedVolume numerous times. Any ideas?

• Problem with OWA search. Mailstore catalogues

  Dear All, I have trawled for the last few days but have not been able to come up with a solution; any help would be much appreciated. Exchange 2007 STD on Windows 2003 64Bit and users report search not working in OWA. So I first check indexing is enabled on the mail stores Get-MailboxDatabase |ft Name,IndexEnabled which all report true, So I try a test Test-ExchangeSearch [email protected] Which is a false -1 Ok, So I run the reset - resetsearchindex.ps1 this works and the event log reports the stores being crawled and finished. BUT- My complete catalogue data is 300kb - LOL! I wish! Obviously all tests fail so I do it manually; Stop indexing service, Delete catalogues. Restart Still no dice, This is where I’m up to, I have tried many different variations of the above and being through oodles of MS documentation Has anyone got any ideas?

• Winamp question: I want to search through my songs by which playlists they're sorted into

  I'm trying to think of a way to do this. I sort my songs into a variety of playlists corresponding to different 'moods' I might have, but some songs fit for more than one kind of mood (e.g. a techno song might be 'stylish' and 'surreal', or something to that effect). I also give them different star ratings for a general sort of opinion about them. I want to be able to filter my media library by moods I want or don't want, as well as by star rating. Anyone have a good way to do something like this? Alternatively, is there a way to 'tag' my songs by mood and then search up by those tags? because then I could just dump the queried results into playlists as needed. Thanks in advance.

  When attempting to import new AD users (Shared Services Administration Shared Service User Profiles and Properties) I receive an error on the top of the User Profiles and Properties page. "An error has occurred while accessing the SQL Server database or the Office SharePoint Server Search service. If this is the first time you have seen this message, try again later. If this problem persists, contact your administrator." I have tried the following: Rebooted server Checked service account permissions and passwords Checked the MIPSCHEDULEDJOB table to ensure all 6 required entries are there.

It is pretty straightforward to use argdo to search args files for a pattern and replace it while suppressing errors and requiring confirmation. :argdo %s/pattern/replace/gec | update However, I would like to delete entire lines that contain the pattern. I use the following. :argdo %/pattern/d | update But I can't suppress errors or require confirmation. Is there a way to do this? Thanks! (Also, is there a way to set "more" off? Thanks!)

  I have a Dell laptop issued by my employer, and I always find it a real pain to search for, download and maintain their drivers. It baffles me that there does not seem to be a nice way (product, website, ...) to just download the stuff you need, without hassle. The same goes for the other Windows based laptops in my direct environment. Are there any (preferably free) automated solutions available? Or do you have a nice workflow - other than searching the manufacturers website - to help smoothing this process?

• How to specify or add directory to Python.h search path during setup.py build/install

  I'm running Linux, and have downloaded a python module I must install without access to any but my particular /home/user directory (I have no root privileges nor the option to pursue them). This of course requires the Python source. This I've downloaded and have laying around in said user directory. While asking the admin to copy the proper files into /usr/include/python2.7 is the easiest way to go about this, I am hoping for a more general and portable solution to this kind of problem. Changing only data in the module source (MANIFEST.in, README.txt, setup.py, etc.), how might I add an arbitrary directory to the search path for Python.h and friends? (Without a solution, "python setup.py build" will continue returning with the "Python.h: No such file or directory" error) Thank you very much. So there must be stored, somewhere in the file description on a Mac OS X file, information on which application created this file. Note that this is not the file extension, the file can have any extension, or no extension at all. Two questions regarding this information: (1) How can I search for all files which will open a specific application? (2) How can I see, and change, the application which a certain file will open?

• Project Server 2010 site creation - the database connection string is not available

  I am trying to get Project Server 2010 up and running on a Win Server 2008 box. I've got Sharepoint 2010 installed and Project Server 2010 installed. I open SharePoint Central Administration, then I go to Manage Service Applications Project Server Service Application. It looks like there is a site under the "Sharepoint - 80" section, but the Status says "Failed - see the Application event Log". When I click on the site and select "Retry" I get the same thing. In the event viewer, I see an error with SharePoint Foundation Search as the Source - it reads: Could not create a database session. Context: Application '276504a6-93b1-4c1f-a900-fd6ed9d5c117' Details: The database connection string is not available. (0xc0041228) How can I fix this? Is there some configuration I missed?

  Can anyone recommend a good (and ideally free) Registry Search & Replace tool? There seems to be a lot of utilities that searches the registry, but not very many that does the replacing. I've found some really old ones (from the late 90s to 2007). I was hoping for newer ones or ones still maintained. I did run across RegReplacer, but that one doesn't seem to work very well (It only found 2 instances of a string where NirSoft's RegScanner caught 449). I also found Registrar Registry Manager via this question here, but it's $44 :-\

• Linux find/search root partition ONLY?

  Say I need to do: find / -name somefile.txt and say root partition / is mounted on /dev/sda5; however, let's say I also have 250GB partitions (/dev/sda6, /dev/sda7) mounted in /media - AND another location that I cannot currently remember. Say, also, that I know the file I'm looking for is on /dev/sda5. Obviously, the above command will also descend in /media and that other directory which represent the big partitions, wasting time in looking for the file in the wrong place. Is there a way to instruct find (or other command) to search only / on /dev/sda5, and NOT to descend to directories if they are on different partitions ? Thanks, Cheers!

• Chrome: Selecting a link by doing search on its text

  I'm trying to use my computer using the keyboard exclusively, without touching the mouse. When browsing the web it can get hard. I use Tab to select links, but there are often dozens of links on a webpage. I can use Chrome's text search (Ctrl-F) to home in on a piece of text in no time; But I can't figure out how to use it to click on a link. For example, let's say there's a link on a webpage with the text "Swedish Furniture". I can easily find it by typing Ctrl-F s w e d, and then Chrome marks the link as found, but is there any way to follow the link after it's found without tabbing through all the links on the page?

• Firefox Address Bar Search Returns Web Server Running?

  When I type "trends" in Firefox 25.0 address bar, it returns what looks like a web server running on my PC, although I am not running a web server. I don't have the score to post the screen shot, but specifically it says: It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet. Why would this display, instead of the normal behavior of the search engine? I'm using Windows 7 with the Anaconda Python distribution installed, but there is no Python interpreter fired up.

• Calculation Expression Parser with Nesting and Variables in ActionScript

  Hi There, I'm trying to enable dynamic fields in the configuration file for my mapping app, but I can't figure out how to parse the "equation" passed in by the user, at least not without writing a whole parser from scratch! I'm sure there is some easier way to do this, and so I'm asking for ideas! Basic idea: public var testString:String = "(#TOTPOP_CY#-#HISPOP_CY#)/#TOTPOP_CY#"; public var valueObject:Object = {TOTPOP_CY:1000, HISPOP_CY:100}; public function calcParse(eq:String):String { // do calculations return calculatedValue } So far, I was thinking of splitting the expression by either the operators, or maybe the variable tokens, but that gets rid of the parenthetical nesting. Alternatively, use a series of regex to search and replace each piece of the expression with its value, recursively running until only a number is left. But I don't think regex does math (i.e. replace "\d + \d" with the sum of the two numbers) Ideally, I'd just do a find/replace all variable names with their values, then run an eval(), but there's no eval in AS... eesh I downloaded some course materials for a course on compiler design, so maybe I'll just write a full-fledged calculator language and parser and port it over from the OTHER flex (the parser generator) :-D

  I have this method that receives an ID number and downloads an HTML website according to that ID. Typically, an IMDB link is like this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892791/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226229/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0000429/ They all follow the 'tt' then 7 digits, with lack of digits turning into zeroes to fill out the left spaces. How can I accomplish this using C#? I'm kind of stumped.   Similar but not the same: How to securely store database connection details Securely connecting to database within a application Hi all, I have a C# WinForms application connecting to a database server. The database connection string, including a generic user/pass, is placed in a NHibernate configuration file, which lies in the same directory as the exe file. Now I have this issue: The user that runs the application should not get to know the username/password of the general database user because I don't want him to rummage around in the database directly. Alternatively I could hardcode the connection string, which is bad because the administrator must be able to change it if the database is moved or if he wants to switch between dev/test/prod environments. So long I've found three possibilities: The first referenced question was generally answered by making the file only readable for the user that runs the application. But that's not not enough in my case (the user running the application is a person. The database user/pass are general and shouldn't even be accessible by the person.) The first answer additionally proposed to encrypt the connection data before writing it to the file. With this approach, the administrator is not able anymore to configure the connection string because he cannot encrypt it by hand. The second referenced question provides an approach for this very scenario but it seems very complicated. My questions to you: This is a very general issue, so isn't there any general "how-to-do-it" way, somehow a "design pattern"? Is there some support in .NET's config infrastructure? (optional, maybe out of scope) Can I combine that easily with the NHibernate configuration mechanism?
