• Windows cmd does not recognize xx.exe even though xx.exe is in system path

  I installed 7-zip and add its directory to system path: C:\Program Files\7-Zip to PATH, from windows start-input cmd and press enter, Windows command line is started, i type 7z.exe, then press enter, it just run. However when i start command line this way: cmd.exe /c start {projectDir} /D{driveLetter} cmd /K then i type 7z.exe, it gives me error because it can not find 7z.exe. why and how to fix? P.S. 1. I'm on Win7. 2. For some other apps, the above way did works, that's why i'm so confused how bat works.

• DOS Batch file to find "new" files by date

  My PC has entered an infinite BSOD loop - but I do have access to a safe-mode command prompt. I'm trying to get an idea of "what changed" that might have triggered this. e.g. I might have gotten a virus, or an app update went belly up. I'd like to thus see which files were created/modified in the last few days/week or at least the *.exe, *.dll, *.com, *.bat etc. I thought I was ok with my Batch-fu but I'm stumped on how to write a quick batch file/command that would list the files for me. REM This will find the files, but the results are all muddled REM all EXE files, reverse sort by date, recursively through sub-directories dir *.exe /O-D /S What I'd really like is to find all (executable filetypes) that were created/modified in the last 3-7 days. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  Hi there, I'm new to Python. I use Python 2.7 and I am running Windows Vista (64-bit). How do I make it when I click on .py scripts... that it opens up in IDLE so I can edit it a snap? Ya know... without having to open IDLE by itself. Heh. I got all the way to C:\Python27\Lib\idlelib but I don't see the IDLE application. • How come Win+R prompt can open Python when it's not in my path?

  When I use the run prompt in Windows XP Professional (Win+R), and type python.exe or python, it works and greets me with the python prompt. However, when I start a cmd window, and then type python.exe or python, it doesn't find it. This is what I expect, as the Python directory (for me, I:\Python31\) is not in my PATH. How come, then, that if I type python.exe in the Win+R prompt, it works? Edit: here is a partial output of SET, I removed most irrelevant entries, I'm not sure why is it useful, apart from the PATH variable which I already said doesn't include the Python directory. • Use DOS batch to move all files up 1 directory

  I have created a batch file to be executed through the right-click menu in Win7. When I right-click on a folder, I would like the batch file to move all files (excluding folders) up 1 directory. I have this so far: PUSHHD %1 MOVE "%1\*.*" ..\ This seems to work as long as the folder I'm moving files from doesn't have any spaces. When the folder does have spaces, I get an error message: "The syntax of the command is incorrect." So my batch works on a folder titled PULLTEST but not on a folder titled PULL TEST. Again, I don't need it to move folders, just files. And I would like it to work in any directory on any drive. There will be no specific directories that I will be working in. It will be random. Below is the registry file I made if needed for reference. • Can I take a HDD in Raid1 and plug it straight into a different machine?

  I would assume that I can just take my HDD out of my NAS (in raid1 mirror) and plug it into another enclosure and have it work off the bat but I'd like to make sure... Any ideas? Edit: My current setup is a Netgear ReadyNAS in (hardware) raid1. I'm hoping to replace this with a home theatre type PC (possibly running Ubuntu), and would like to migrate my data without having to do a bulk transfer over my network between the 2 machines. Can anyone confirm the case for the Netgear ReadyNAS?

  I've got a scheduled task set up in my Windows 7 machine which is meant to run a BAT file when I'm not around, i.e. the machine has been idle for 15 minutes. Does anyone know how to track down the cause of the error code ? Checked on MSDN and it says ... SCHED_E_TASK_ATTEMPTED 0x80041324 The Task Scheduler service attempted to run the task, but the task did not run due to one of the constraints in the task definition. And to confuse me even further, I've just noticed it has run while I'm at the machine with last result (0x0)

• Compiling/executing Java on Sublime Text 2 works fine except that it cannot read user input

  I am a student learning Java and I want to compile and run some simple Java on ST2. Also Eclipse is very slow on my laptop. Here is my JavaC.sublime-build file so far: { "cmd": ["sublimejavaexec.bat", "$file"], "file_regex": "^(...*?):([0-9]*):?([0-9]*)", "selector": "source.java" } So far it can run code that does not require user input. However when I have something that uses the Java input scanner it either skips through or generates an error. Can anyone suggest a solution such as a plug-in or if ST2 actually has this kind of feature on its console? Thanks.

• Windows: How to add batch-script action to Right Click menu

  I have a few programs that creates temp files or backup files or similar files that are not important. For example, GVim for Windows by default creates a backup file in filename.txt~. I sometimes need to clean up a dir and remove all these files. I have made a simple .bat file for this. However, it is cumbersome to have to start up cmd, navigate to the folder, run the script. Especially since this is a script that I would like to run often on various folders. And I do not want to copy the script to multiple folders, as this would be a maintenance nightmare. So, I was thinking, that the best solution would be to add a Right Click menu item that allows me to run the script. So that I can right click on a folder in Explorer and click Cleanup and then have my script run on this folder. So my question is: How do I add a right click menu action that runs a custom batch script?

• Windows 7 clean install, freezes when starting programs

  Hello Everyone, I have a problem on a brand new Windows 7 Lenovo T510 intel I5/4gb ram. When I got the Laptop, right off the bat i noticed that it would freeze up often on th most simple tasks. After a while I got fed up and reinstalled. All that is installed currently is AVG/Firefox/Office. I Rebooted after installing those things and when I try to open Firefox it freezes just trying to open. Ive tried a few other things and it freezes all the time. Any Ideas what it could be?

  I want to run a exe or bat file when window shut down? I want to unmount few drives , which are mounted by my application , when user shutdown the system. For that I need to execute another exe on shutdown, which will disconnect drives mounted by my app. I got few links which shows we can create a entry in Group Policy to execute a programe while window shut down. I am not sure how I can add a entry to Group ploicy by C++ code. Again , group policy doesn't work with Win Vista. Any other better approach ?

  Hallo, I'm trying to deploy some classroom control software (NetSupport School) to some of the machines on our network but for some reason when you log off and restart the computer any user who logs on ends up re-installing the software while logging on. I spent two hours on the phone to the complanys support and we eventually nailed it down to most likely a setting in Active Directory or in the login.bat (drive mapping and settings) but we can't find anything in those that would say "run this installer at logon". Is there anywhere else on the system that would set something like this? Server 2003/XP. Ta!

• Control scheduled tasks execution

  We are a small shop. I am mainly a programmer, but due to being the only one that risks to manage our servers, the task has fallen on me (yet I it is still a secondary function so I cannot give it too much time). Over the course of years we have needed to create a decent number of .bat scripts that run as scheduled tasks in our servers (dump DB servers, SVN servers, copy files, etc.). Manually checking that everyone has proceeded ok is a time consuming task. I could get them to send an email on completion, but then I would get swarmed by lots of emails each morning. If I setup them to only e-mail on failure, I might miss the instances where the error causes the task to abort (or even not to start). Are there other alternatives? We are currently using Windows 2003 R2, but we are thinking of adding some Linux server soon, so a cross-platform solution would be best.

• windows printer spool gets stuck with file at 64kb from linux and mac

  Hi I have two printers one on a file server with windows 2003, and other with windows XP. The thing is that when i try to print from my machine, my file stays in queue for ever, it says 64kb out of whatever the file i send. I have seen similar problems with some machines that run on Mac OS X. The windows machines apparently have no problems printing. They are not connect through active directory, just the network. In the past I have seen people install non microsoft windows Printer server on windows, i dont remember the name of any of the programs. I have being googling a lot and have not found anything to replace the microsoft print spooler service, maybe i am mistaken. Everyday I have to restart the print spooler service i even created a bat file for it. I am out of ideas here.

  Ever since a windows update that took down my IIS6 mail server a few weeks back, I've been really paranoid about my mail server working. So every time I run a windows update I fire up command prompt and send myself a quick test mail. Like so: > telnet localhost 25 > helo domain.com > mail from: [email protected] > rcpt to: [email protected] > data some random body to mail myself . This is a realy great way to test my mail server, but it's a pain in the neck to do quickly. Is there anyway i can run this in a batch script or something as a quick test? I've tried a bat file but this just waits after i call telnet I've also explored if telnet accepts any input files and it does not seem to. What's the best way to do this?

• Auto backup a user folder to a usb when usb is plugged in

  I'm a computer technician and help customers everyday with their computers and smartphones and have a really basic (i think) request but dont know how to go about it. Customer always come in with broken phones, water damage, needing updates, or just want me to backup their information. I currently have a program that i use when i backup their computers it backups their iOS folder C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup but what i want is a quick easy way to do this in customers houses. What i require is a way when i plug in a USB drive it AUTOMATICALLY searches for the folder and starts transferring the folder to a predefined folder on the USB drive. This was I can just plug it in and begin work on their computer or phone without the risk of losing their information. I'm sure there is a .bat/.ini file i could use but wondering if someone has already done this or something similar as I would need it to search all the USER folders not just the one I'm logged into. • Making a class pseudo-immutable by setting a flag

  I have a java project that involves building some pretty complex objects. There are quite a lot (dozens) of different ones and some of them have a HUGE number of parameters. They also need to be immutable. So I was thinking the builder pattern would work, but it ends up require a lot of boilerplate. Another potential solution I thought of was to make a mutable class, but give it a "frozen" flag, a-la ruby. Here is a simple example: public class EqualRule extends Rule { private boolean frozen; private int target; public EqualRule() { frozen = false; } public void setTarget(int i) { if (frozen) throw new IllegalStateException( "Can't change frozen rule."); target = i; } public int getTarget() { return target; } public void freeze() { frozen = true; } @Override public boolean checkRule(int i) { return (target == i); } } and "Rule" is just an abstract class that has an abstract "checkRule" method. This cuts way down on the number of objects I need to write, while also giving me an object that becomes immutable for all intents and purposes. This kind of act like the object was its own Builder... But not quite. I'm not too excited, however, about having an immutable being disguised as a bean however. So I had two questions: 1. Before I go too far down this path, are there any huge problems that anyone sees right off the bat? For what it's worth, it is planned that this behavior will be well documented... 2. • Creating a Scheduled Task that runs forever on Windows XP

  When I create a scheduled task, I do so via command line: schtasks.exe /Create /TN "startup-script" /TR "C:\startup.bat" /RU taskuser /RP taskpasswd /SC ONLOGON The idea is that this task run forever. The batch opens a java process that is never meant to end. I've used ONLOGON, as the machine auto-logs in as taskuser. All this works fine, for about 72 hours, after which the Duration flag kicks in and ends the process. Windows XP doesn't have the /DU flag on command line - is there an alternative method to creating a task that is meant to run from a system startup (doesn't even require logon) and runs forever, without touching a GUI?

• Windows 2008 startup script will not run?

  I am trying to get a very simple batch script to run when my Windows 2008 Server (R2) system starts up. I have added the script to the "Startup Scripts" in the local group policy by running gpedit.msc, and I see the script listed under Windows Settings/Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)/Startup when I run rsop.msc, but the script is not being executed. The "Last Executed" column in rsop is empty even after a reboot, and a file that should be created by the script is never created. At the moment, the entire contents of the script are: rem Check if this script is running. date /t > c:\temp\flag The target directory (c:\temp) exists. The script is called c:\scripts\startup.bat, and works fine if I run it by hand.

• Weblogic Class-Path Dependencies EAR

  I am deploying an EAR in a WebLogic node with many jars defined in the bootstrap (startWeblogicServer.bat) class-path. The problem is that my ear and the bootstrap contain different versions of the same jars, not only that but certain jars contain extracted third party libraries which also differ in version from the WebLogic bootstrap jars causing all kinds of classpath errors. I know you can set preferred jars in the EAR application xml but, this can be very tedious to resolve with regards to jars which include extracted third party libraries in terms of understanding all the dependencies.. Is there a correct approach that i need to be taking here? Am i thinking about this in the wrong way? Any help would be greatly appreciated! So far prefer-web-inf-classes has been recommended but wont work because i'm not deploying a WAR, also prefer-application-packages is what we are currently using but still has the issue described above... Anymore advice out there?? Thanks!

• Choosing the Database Solution for Large Data Application

  I have been tasked to write an application that will be a combination of document and inventory management in VB.net which will be used to store document images in TIFF, PDF, XPS, TXT, DOC, PPT and so on as binary data that can be retrieved for viewing, printing, and possible OCR to be searchable as well along with meta data such as sender, recipient, type of document, date, source, etc. So the table would probably be something like: DOC_NAME, DOC_DATE, NOTES, ... DOC_BINARY (where the actual document will be put inside) What my concern is finding a database solution that will not become unstable due to size restrictions, records limitations and performance. Some of the options are MS_SQL, SQL Express, SQLite, mySQL, and Access. Now I can pretty much eliminate Access right off the bat as it is just too limiting and not scalable. I can further eliminate SQL Express because of the 2 GB limit and again scalability. So that leaves me with MS_SQL, SQLite and mySQL (although if anyone has other options they think would be good as well, please feel free to share them, by no means am I set on these only). So this brings me to what you guys think is the best option for what I have described. The goal is that the data is all in one place (a single file) that will make backup and portability easier. For small volume usage, pretty much any solution will hold for a while, but my goal is to think ahead and make sure its able to withstand heavy large volume usage as well. Another consideration is also the interoperability with .NET and stability of such code to avoid errors and memory leaks. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

• Stopping/Starting windows services

  I have four windows services which start up automatically when the machine starts. There after, I want to restart those services every 8 hours in a particular order. For eg. Stop s1,s2,s3,s4 and than restart them in some other order like s4,s3,s2,s1. The condition is that I should wait for each service to stop completely before I stop another one. I would want to write a .BAT or some script. Is it possible to define a CRON for 8 hours, this is not there in Advanced tasks ? Can I do it using windows scheduler ?   I'm not exactly the most tech savy so please bear with me. I am trying to connect through a proxy with my Virtualbox accounts. Initially I wanted to just set the browsers in each virtualbox under a proxy but my boss said that it can probably be done right off the bat under the virtualbox accounts itself. • Windows 7 disappearing applications and shortcuts

  I installed a number of applications on a new laptop running Windows 7, selecting "run as administrator" wherever necessary. But after rebooting, all executable files (.exe, .bat) were missing from the program folders, and all the new desktop shortcuts were gone as well, without a trace! I can't even open any pdf's now, because the reader application I installed seemingly no longer exists. My hunch is that this has something to do with UAC virtualization, but I don't really understand how, since I was logged on as an administrator the whole time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
