• NetBeans create and instantiate programatically custom swing widgets

  Hey! I have a problem I know how I would solve easily developing under eclipse - but not so easily developing under net beans. I want to create a custom swing widget - which I can instantiate by code as many as I need and attach them to my main panel. I have developed the rest of the GUI using the GUIBuilder. The problem is - im not entirely sure how to do this. Say I got 20 results back from a web service, I would wana loop round - and add 20 of these custom swing widgets - the custom swing widgets would look as follows : :Picture: :Label: :Label: Can anybody please help me, im not entirely sure how to do the custom widget either! • Gwt-ext. Bean to record and record to bean.

  I write a RIA application and my JPA beans must be decoded to push it in Store. My decisions are: Brute Force. If I have property 'aProp' in bean (and getter/setter for it) i create RecordDef, then Record, then Recrod.set('aProp', bean.getAProp()) and so on.. (it is terrible) I can write generator for creating a Factory of Records (it is my desision and i write it). For example: RecordFactory<User> factory = GWT.create(User.class); //User is entity I now that i need a reflection, BUT GWT have no implementation of reflection (some libraries emulates this, but they builds on generators) Exists the best way?   On the Tomcat FAQ it says: "Tomcat is not an EJB server. Tomcat is not a full J2EE server." But if I: use Spring to supply an application context annotate my entities with JPA annotations (and use Hibernate as a JPA provider) configure C3P0 as a connection pooling data source annotate my service methods with @Transactional (and use Atomikos as JTA provider) Use JAXB for marshalling and unmarshalling and possibly add my own JNDI capability then don't I effectively have a JEE application server? And then aren't my beans EJBs? Or is there some other defining characteristic? What is it that a JEE compliant app server gives you that you can't easily/readily get from Tomcat with some 3rd party subsystems?

• JSF Pages call ManagedBeans that are not defined on the page and call all getters sometimes more tha

  I have several JSF pages that are initializing and accessing ManagedBeans that are not even used on that page. This is creating a really hairy problem for initialization. I either have to make them all session scope and continually make calls to re-inialize or take the performance hit of having them read large amounts of data from the DB whenever they decide to initialize. Some of the managed beans being accessed are not even defined on the page in question. I have done some optimization based on comments related to multiple calls to getters, but I still have the issue that I have a very specialized (and expensive to initialize) bean that is getting called when I don't want it initialized. Any insight into why/what JSF calls might do something like this. I have a very complex page making use of JSTL, Tomahawk and standard JSF tags. I could include code, but its very complex and sensitive in nature.

• Grails external Jms broker (active mq)

  I have what will become an 'external' activemq server I'd like grails to be able to talk to. Right now I am just running it on my dev box. Here is what I have setup right now: 1) Run activemq server 2) Run activemq/examples using ant to produce messages 3) View ActiveMQ admin site: http://localhost:8161/admin/queues.jsp verify that messages are in the queue. 4) Follow Mini Tutorial to create the Service and Controller: http://www.grails.org/ActiveMQ+Plugin 5) Configured my Grails resources.groovy file as follows: beans = { jmsConnectionFactory(SingleConnectionFactory){ targetConnectionFactory = { ActiveMQConnectionFactory cf -> brokerURL = 'tcp://localhost:61616' } } } When I run the grails app I get a BindException saying port 61616 is already in use. How do I configure this to use my server that is already running? I've tried changing 'localhost' to '127.0.0.1' and to my LAN ip, but no luck, it keeps trying to setup its own embedded activemq server. Any ideas?

  I have a model that would look something like: my_diet = Diet.new my_diet.food_type_1 = "beef" my_diet.food_type_1_percentage = 40 my_diet.food_type_2 = "carrots" my_diet.food_type_2_percentage = 50 my_diet.food_type_3 = "beans" my_diet.food_type_3_percentage = 5 my_diet.food_type_4 = "chicken" my_diet.food_type_4_percentage = 5 I need to find which food_type has the highest percentage.   Hi All, I have a folder structure, as shown below: I need to create a bash script that does 4 things: It searches all the files in the generic directory and finds the string 'generic' and makes it into 'something' As above, but changes "GENERIC" to "SOMETHING" As above, but changes "Generic" to "Something" Renames any filename that has "generic" in it with "something" Right now I am doing this process manually by using the search and replace in net beans. I dont know much about bash scripting, but i'm sure this can be done. I'm thinking of something that I would run and it would take "Something" as the input. Where would I start? what functions should I use? overall guidance would be great. thanks. I am using Ubuntu 10.5 desktop edition.

• Should we exclude code for the code coverage analysis?

  I'm working on several applications, mainly legacy ones. Currently, their code coverage is quite low: generally between 10 and 50%. Since several weeks, we have recurrent discussions with the Bangalore teams (main part of the development is made offshore in India) regarding the exclusions of packages or classes for Cobertura (our code coverage tool, even if we are currently migrating to JaCoCo). Their point of view is the following: as they will not write any unit tests on some layers of the application (1), these layers should be simply excluded from the code coverage measure. In others words, they want to limit the code coverage measure to the code that is tested or should be tested. Also, when they work on unit test for a complex class, the benefits - purely in term of code coverage - will be unnoticed due in a large application. Reducing the scope of the code coverage will make this kind of effort more visible... The interest of this approach is that we will have a code coverage measure that indicates the current status of the part of the application we consider as testable. However, my point of view is that we are somehow faking the figures. This solution is an easy way to reach higher level of code coverage without any effort. Another point that bothers me is the following: if we show a coverage increase from one week to another, how can we tell if this good news is due to the good work of the developers, or simply due to new exclusions? In addition, we will not be able to know exactly what is considered in the code coverage measure. For example, if I have a 10,000 lines of code application with 40% of code coverage, I can deduct that 40% of my code base is tested (2). But what happen if we set exclusions? If the code coverage is now 60%, what can I deduct exactly? That 60% of my "important" code base is tested? How can I As far as I am concerned, I prefer to keep the "real" code coverage value, even if we can't be cheerful about it. In addition, thanks to Sonar, we can easily navigate in our code base and know, for any module / package / class, its own code coverage. But of course, the global code coverage will still be low. • Playing with F#

  Project Euler is a awesome site.   When working with a new language it can be tricky to find problems that need solving, that are more complex than "Hello World" and simpler than a full blown application. Project Euler gives use just that, cool and thought provoking problems that usually don't take days to solve.  I've solved a number of questions with C# and some with Java.  BTW, I used Java because it had BigInteger support before .Net. A couple weeks ago, back when winter had a firm grip on Columbus, OH, I began playing (researching) with F#.  I began with Problem #1 from Project Euler.  I started by looking at my solution in C#. Type inference. F# infers the type of a value.  In the C# code above we declare a number of variables, the list, and a couple ints.  F# does not require this, it infers the calc (a function) accepts a int and returns a int. Great built in functionality for Lists.  List.map for example. BTW, I don’t think I’m spilling the beans by giving away the code for Problem 1.  It by far is the easiest question, IMHO, solved by 92,000+ people. Next I’ll look into writing a class library with F#.

• How to wrap console utils in webserver

  I have a big dataset (100Mbs/day) and a bunch of console a TCL/TK tools to view it - I want to turn it into a web app that I can build, and others can maintain. In long: my group runs simulations yielding 100s of Mbs of data daily, in multiple (mostly but not only) text forms. We have a bunch of scripts and tools, mostly old school 1990's style stuff requiring a 5-button mouse, as well as lots of ad-hoc scripts that engineers build out of frustration every month or so. These produces UIs, graphs, spreadsheets (various sizes), logs, event histories etc. I want to replace (or at least supplement) the xwindows / console style UI with a web-based one, so I need the following properties: pleasant to program can wrap existing command-line tools in separate views (I don't need to scrape GUIs or anything) as I port logic from the existing scripts I can create a modularised and pleasant codebase to replace it I can attach a web-ui to navigate between views - each view is likely to contain keys which might make sense to view in another I am new to building systems that have logic on the back-end and front-end of a web-server. from that point of view, they do this: backend wraps old-school executables, constructs calls into them and them takes the output and wraps it up, niceifies it and delivers it to the web client. For instance the tool might generate a number of indexed images (per invocation) which I might deliver all at once or on-demand. May (probably) need to to heavy stats on some sources. frontend provides navigation connecting multiple views, performs requests from one view for data from another (or self to self), etc. Probably will have some views with a lot of interactivity. Can people please point me towards viable solutions for this? I know it's a bit of an open question so as answers come in I hope to refine the spec until we have a good match. I guess I expect to see answers like "RoR!" "beans!" "Scala!" but please give an indication of why those are a good fit; I know nothing! I got bumped off SO for asking an open-ended question, so sorry if its OT here too (let me know). I take the policy that I use the best/closest matched language for a project but most of my team are extremely low level (ie pipeline stages and CDyn) so I don't have the peer group to know where to start.

I need to make the above more general, so that any kind of object can be handled without requiring changes to the JGridView. • Xbox 360 formatting for MP4 h.264?

  For the life of me, I can't get the Xbox 360 to recognize anything other than a WMV. It's full updated with Xbox Live and I even added all the Video apps (Zune, Netflix, etc) just to see if it would force some sort of codec update. I'm using handbrake, at the moment, to try and convert an mkv with subtitles. Handbrake burns the subtitles into the video for me, which is important. I can't figure out what is missing though, as the Xbox refuses to acknowledge my MP4s. Here's the VLC codec info output: As far as I can tell, this is EXACTLY what the xbox supports. I don't want to convert every video twice by throwing it through Windows Movie Maker just to get it to WMV. None of the converters mentions above output to WMV and I don't like WMV since it's not as universal as MP4. I've tried changing the container name manually to M4V, MOV, and AVI to see if I can trick the Xbox... no beans. The video displays perfectly in WMP, of course. If I convert it to WMV, suddenly it works fine. But I don't find this acceptable, as I know the Xbox is supposed to support other filetypes. If anyone knows why my Xbox won't play anything but WMVs, I would be very appreciative to know why! It's driving me nuts. The only other information I can think to include is that it's about 3 years old and of the cheapest variety (Xbox Arcade). I've added a hard drive, xbox live, and have thoroughly updated it. Maybe there's a specific video update I'm unaware of??

• Java VM problem in OpenVZ

  Hi, I bought a vps for hosting my java needs. But I can't run java on it. Everything about java is correctly installed but when I try to run java ("java -version" forexample) I get this error : Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. I don't think this is a java centered problem, Out of memory for sure. I contacted the vps admin, but he says everything is fine, you have 2gb ram, expandable to 4gb! I did a bit search on the subject, here is my BEANS file (numbers converted to humanredable form using a script). By the way do JVM heap memory allocs count on kmemsize or privvmpages ? • Vim: How to join multiples lines based on a pattern?

  I want to join multiple lines in a file based on a pattern that both lines share. This is my example: {101}{}{Apples} {102}{}{Eggs} {103}{}{Beans} {104}... ... {1101}{}{This is a fruit.} {1102}{}{These things are oval.} {1103}{}{You have to roast them.} {1104}... ... I want to join the lines {101}{}{Apples} and {1101}{}{This is a fruit.} to one line {101}{}{Apples}{1101}{}{This is a fruit.} for further processing. Same goes for the other lines. As you can see, both lines share the number 101, but I have no idea how to pull this off. Any Ideas? /EDIT: I found a "workaround": First, delete all preceding "{1" characters from group two in VISUAL BLOCK mode with C-V (or similar shortcut), then sort all lines by number with :%sort n, then join every second line with :let @q = "Jj" followed by 500@q. This works, but leaves me with {101}{}{Apples} 101}{}{This is a fruit.}. I would then need to add the missing characters "{1" in each line, not quite what I want. Any help appreciated.
