• iPhone Dev:Blurring of CALayers when rotated

  Hello All, I have a CALayer with a png image as its content.When rotation is applied the layer looks blurry. I've searched for a cause for this problem and found out that the problem might be the half pixel problem, which makes the layer blurry if its frame.origin lays on fractions like 96.5, and they suggest to make the origin a whole number. Now, my layer's origin contains fractions because of the rotation i make as in: tempLayer.anchorPoint = CGPointMake(0.5,0.5); tempLayer.position = CGPointMake(200,100); tempLayer.bounds = CGRectMake(0,0,70,88); tempLayer.transform = CATransform3DMakeRotation(10.f*M_PI/180.f, 0.f, 0.f, 1.f); tempLayer.contents = (id)myImage; Basically i have three questions: 1) Is there a better way to rotate the layer? 2) The frame values are derived from the anchorPoint, position, bounds and transform values, how can i round my frame values to integer values and keep my rotation intact? 3) Can the CGRectIntegral function help me? • Image resizing - sometimes very poor quality?!

  I'm resizing some images to the screen resolution of the user; if the aspect ratio is wrong, the image should be cut. But for some images, the result has an extremely poor quality. It looks like the would have been resized to something very small (thumbnail size) and enlarged again.. • Casting to specify unknown object type?

  In the following code I have a view object that is an instance of UIScrollView, if I run the code below I get warnings saying that "UIView might not respond to -setContentSize etc." UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"Snowy_UK.jpg"]; imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; [[self view] addSubview:imageView]; [[self view] setContentSize:[image size]]; [[self view] setMaximumZoomScale:2.0]; [[self view] setMinimumZoomScale: [[self view] bounds].size.width / [image size].width]; I have checked the type of the object and [self view] is indeed a UIScrollView. I am guessing that this is just the compiler making a bad guess as to the type and the solution is simply to cast the object to the correct type manually, am I getting this right? • Confused about UIView frame property

  I'm building a prototype iPad app that draws diagrams. I have the following view hierarchy: UIView UIScrollView DiagramView : UIView TabBar NavigationBar And a UIViewController subclass holding all that together. Before drawing the diagram the first time I calculate the dimensions of the diagram, and set the DiagramView frame to that size, and the content size of the scrollview as well. -(void)recalculateBounds { [renderer diagram:diagram shouldDraw:NO]; SQXRect diagramRect = SQXMakeRect(0.0,0.0,[diagram bounds].size.width,[diagram bounds].size.height); self.frame = diagramRect; [(UIScrollView*)[self superview] setContentSize:diagramRect.size]; } I should disclose that the frame is being set to about 1500 x 3500 which i know is ridiculous. I just want to focus on some other parts of the app before I get into optimizing the render code. This works beautifully, except that the rect being passed to drawRect is not the size that I set, and my drawing is getting clipped at the bottom. Its close the size i set, but bigger in width, and shorter in height. Also of note, is the fact that if I force the frame to be much bigger than what I know the diagram needs, then the drawRect:rect is big enough, and no clipping occurs. Of course this has me wondering if the frame size needs to take into account some other screen real estate like the toolbars but my reading of the docs tells me the frame is in superview coordinates, which would be the scrollview so I reckon I need to worry about such things. Any idea what is causing this discrepancy?

• Is there a safe / standard way to manage unstructured memory in C++?

  I'm building a toy VM that requires a block of memory for storing and accessing data elements of different types and of different sizes. I've done this by writing a wrapper class around a uint8_t[] data block of the needed size. That class has some template methods to write / read typed data elements to / from arbitrary locations in the memory block, both of which check to make certain the bounds aren't violated. These methods use memmove in what I hope is a more or less safe manner. That said, while I am willing to press on in this direction, I've got to believe that other with more expertise have been here before and might be willing to share their wisdom. In particular: 1) Is there a class in one of the C++ standards (past, present, future) that has been defined to perform a function similar to what I have outlined above? 2) If not, is there a (preferably free as in beer) library out there that does? 3) Short of that, besides bounds checking and the inevitable issue of writing one type to a memory location and reading a different from that location, are there other issues I should be aware of? • View transform seems to be ignored when animating on iphone. Why?

  I have views that can be rotated, scaled and moved around the screen. I want the view to resize and be orthogonal when the user double tap's the view to edit the textview within. The code is below. Somewhere the transform is getting reset. The NSLog statement below prints the identity transform, but a print of the transform when the animation is complete in transitionDidStop reveals that the transform is what it was before I thought I set it to identity. The view resizes, but it acts like the transform was never set to identity?   I'm building an ASP.NET MVC site that uses LINQ to SQL. In my search method that has some required and some optional parameters, I want to build a LINQ query while testing for the existence of those optional parameters. • How to close all tabs in Safari using AppleScript?

  I have made a very simple AppleScript to close all tabs in Safari. The problem is, it works, but not completely. I tried that on my system (MacBook Pro jan 2008), as well as on a Mac Pro G5 under Tiger and the script fails on both, albeit with a much less descriptive error on Tiger. The problem is that only a couple of tabs are closed. Running the script a few times closes a few tab each time until none is left, but always fails with the same error after closing a few tabs. Under Leopard I get an out of bounds error. Since I am using fast enumeration (not using "repeat from 0 to number of items in windows") I don't see how I can get an out of bounds error with this... My goal is to use the Cocoa Scripting Bridge to close tabs in Safari from my Objective-C Cocoa application but the Scripting Bridge fails in the same manner. The non-deletable tabs show as NULL in the Xcode debugger, while the other tabs are valid objects from which I can get values back (such as their title). In fact I tried with the Scripting Bridge first then told myself why not try this directly in AppleScript and I was surprised to see the same results. I must have a glaring omission or something in there... (seems like a bug in Safari AppleScript support to me... :S) I've used repeat loops and Obj-C 2.0 fast enumeration to iterate through collections before with zero problems, so I really don't see what's wrong here. • What algorithm can I use to determine points within a semi-circle?

  I have a list of two-dimensional points and I want to obtain which of them fall within a semi-circle. Originally, the target shape was a rectangle aligned with the x and y axis. So the current algorithm sorts the pairs by their X coord and binary searches to the first one that could fall within the rectangle. Then it iterates over each point sequentially. It stops when it hits one that is beyond both the X and Y upper-bound of the target rectangle. This does not work for a semi-circle as you cannot determine an effective upper/lower x and y bounds for it. The semi-circle can have any orientation. Worst case, I will find the least value of a dimension (say x) in the semi-circle, binary search to the first point which is beyond it and then sequentially test the points until I get beyond the upper bound of that dimension. Basically testing an entire band's worth of points on the grid. The problem being this will end up checking many points which are not within the bounds.

• Orientation issue while presenting Modal ViewController

  Current scenario: Right now I am showing a UIViewController using a segue with the style Modal and presentation Sheet. This Modal gets its superview bounds change, in order to have the dimensions I want, like this: - (void)viewWillLayoutSubviews { [super viewWillLayoutSubviews]; self.view.superview.bounds = WHBoundsRect; } The only allowed orientations are UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft and UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight. Since the Modal has some TextFields and the keyboard would be over the Modal itself, I am changing its center so it moves a bit to the top. The problem: What I am noticing right now, is that I am unable to work with the Y coordinate. In order for it move vertically (remember it's on landscape) I need to work with the X. The problem is that when it's UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft I need to come with a negative X. And when it's UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight I need to come with a positive X. So it seems that the X/Y Coordinate System is "glued" to the top left corner while in Portrait and when an orientation occurs, it's still there: What I have done So I have something like this: UIInterfaceOrientation orientation = [[UIApplication sharedApplication] statusBarOrientation]; NSInteger newX = 0.0f; if (orientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft) { // Logic for calculating the negative X. } else { // Logic for calculating the positive X. } It works exactly like I want, but it seems a very fragile implementation. Am I missing something? Is this the expected behaviour?

• Incompatible type for argument 1 of 'setBounds'

  I am trying to do my own custom classes and learn C and Objective C. I'm recieving the error that there is an incompatible type for argument 1. ShapeRect rect0 = { 0, 0, 10, 30 }; shapes[0] = [Shape new]; [shapes[0] setBounds: rect0]; I get the error that setBounds is incompatible. For some reason it isn't looking at the Shape.h class for the setBounds method and it is instead looking at the default setBounds method? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

My question is, how do I select the full pdf page and flip it round to display correctly. I have seen a few examples using ScaleCTM and TranslateCTM but couldn't seem to get them working. Any examples in ObjectiveC are fine, I'll take all the help I can get :) Thanks

• Can this line of code really throw an IndexOutOfRange exception?

  I am getting an IndexOutOfRange exception on the following line of code: var searchLastCriteria = (SearchCriteria)Session.GetSafely(WebConstants.KeyNames.SEARCH_LAST_CRITERIA); I'll explain the above here: SearchCriteria is an Enum with only two values Session is the HttpSessionState GetSafely is an extension method that looks like this: public static object GetSafely(this HttpSessionState source, string key) { try { return source[key]; } catch (Exception exc) { log.Info(exc); return null; } } WebConstants.KeyNames.SEARCH_LAST_CRITERIA is simply a constant I've tried everything to replicate this error, but I cannot reproduce it. I am beginning to think the stack trace is wrong. I thought perhaps the exception was actually coming from the GetSafely call, but it is swallowing the exceptions, so that can't be the case, and even if it was, it should show up in the stack trace. Is there anything in the line of code above that could possible throw an IndexOutOfRange exception? I know the line will throw an NullReferenceException if GetSafely returns null, and it will also throw an InvalidCastException if it returns anything that cannot be cast to SearchCriteria, but an IndexOutOfRange exception? • Is it not possible to make a C++ application "Crash Proof"?

  Let's say we have an SDK in C++ that accepts some binary data (like a picture) and does something. Is it not possible to make this SDK "crash-proof"? By crash I primarily mean forceful termination by the OS upon memory access violation, due to invalid input passed by the user (like an abnormally short junk data). I have no experience with C++, but when I googled, I found several means that sounded like a solution (use a vector instead of an array, configure the compiler so that automatic bounds check is performed, etc.). When I presented this to the developer, he said it is still not possible.. Not that I don't believe him, but if so, how is language like Java handling this? I thought the JVM performs everytime a bounds check. If so, why can't one do the same thing in C++ manually? UPDATE By "Crash proof" I don't mean that the application does not terminate. I mean it should not abruptly terminate without information of what happened (I mean it will dump core etc., but is it not possible to display a message like "Argument x was not valid" etc.?)

• Installation error: INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK in eclipse

  I have an unexpe`ted problem with my Android project. I have a real android device with ice_cream sandwich installed. My app was working fine during the development but after I added a class to the project, I got an error: Installation error: INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK The problem is that everything is good in the manifest file. The minSdkversion is 8. • How to speed up drawing of scaled image? Audio playback chokes during window resize.

  I am writing an audio player for OSX. One view is a custom view that displays a waveform. The waveform is stored as a instance variable of type NSImage with an NSBitmapImageRep. The view also displays a progress indicator (a thick red line). Therefore, it is updated/redrawn every 30 milliseconds. Since it takes a rather long time to recalculate the image, I do that in a background thread after every window resize and update the displayed image once the new image is ready. In the meantime, the original image is scaled to fit the view like this: // The drawing rectangle is slightly smaller than the view, defined by // the two margins. During live resize, audio starts choking. Selecting the "big" graphic card on my Macbook Pro makes it less bad, but not by much. CPU utilization is somewhere around 20-40% during live resizes. Instruments suggests that rescaling/redrawing of the image is the problem. Once I stop resizing the window, CPU utilization goes down and audio stops glitching. I already tried to disable image interpolation to speed up the drawing like this: [[NSGraphicsContext currentContext] setImageInterpolation:NSImageInterpolationNone]; That helps, but audio still chokes during live resizes. Do you have an idea how to improve this? The main thing is to prevent the audio from choking.

I want to plot them all on my map, but I want to give condos and houses different marker icons( blue marker for condos, green marker for houses ). Problem I have is - figuring out how to distinguish between types of markers when I $.each() through them. You can install all of that to your local HDD when you are installing it. I am going to walk you through the Silverlight Controls recently released by Infragistics. Begin by downloading the trial version and running the executable. If you downloaded the Complete bundle then you will have the following options to pick from. I like having help documentation and samples on my local HDD in case I do not have access to the internet and want to code. After it is installed, you may want to take a look at your Toolbox in Visual Studio 2010. Look for NetAdvantage 10.3 Silverlight and you will see that you now have access to all of these controls. At this point, to use the controls it’s as simple as drag/drop onto your Silverlight container. It will create the proper Namespaces for you. I wanted to highlight a few of the controls that I liked the most: Grid – After using the Infragistics grid you will wonder how you ever survived using the grid supplied by Microsoft standard controls.  This grid was designed to get your application up and running very fast. It’s simple to bind, it handles LARGE DataSets, easy to filter and allows endless possibilities of formatting data. The screenshot below is an example of the grid. For a real-time updating demo click here. SpellChecker- If your users are creating emails or performing any other function that requires Spell Checking then this control is great. Check out the screenshots below: In this first screen, I have a word that is not in the dictionary [DotNet]. The Spell Checker finds the word and allows the user to correct it. What is so great about Infragistics controls is that it only takes a few lines of code to have a full-featured Spell Checker in your application. TagCloud – This is a control that I haven’t seen anywhere else. It allows you to create keywords for popular search terms. This is very similar to TagCloud seen all over the internet.  Below is a screenshot that shows “Facebook” being a very popular item in the cloud. You can link these items to a hyperlink if you wanted. Importing/Exporting from Excel – I work with data a majority of the time. We all know the importance of Excel in our organizations, its used a lot. With Infragistics controls it make importing and exporting data from a Grid into Excel a snap. One of the things that I liked most about this control was the option to choose the Excel format (2003 or 2007). I haven’t seen this feature in other controls. Creating/Saving/Extracting/Uploading Zip Files – This is another control that I haven’t seen many others making. It allows you to basically manipulate a zip file in any way you like. You can even create a password on the zip file. Schedule – The Schedule that Infragistics provides resembles Outlook’s calendar. I think that it’s important for a user to see your app for the first time and immediately be able to start using because they are already familiar with the UI. The Schedule control accomplishes that in my opinion. I have just barely scratched the surface with the Infragistics Silverlight Line of Business controls. To check all of them then click here. This is a high resolution barcode that you will not have to wonder if your scanner can read it. As long as you have ink in your printer your barcode will read it. I used a Symbol barcode reader to test this barcode. xamTreemap– I’ve never seen a way of displaying data like this before, but I like it. • Why does Google mark one e-mail as spam while does not the other?

  I've a Postfix installation which works fine, I don't get any trouble with mails sent through a mail client (in my case, Thunderbird or RoundCube) when the To: address is a GMail account. However, I recently needed to use the PHPMailer tool to send some e-mails to some GMail accounts, so I configured an account to be used via SASL authentication + TLS. I don't mean mass mailing, just 2-3 mails. If I send the e-mail from the Thunderbird or RoundCube clients, the mail is not marked as spam. However, if I use PHPMailer, it always gets catalogued as spam. So I compared both headers and I just can't find the reason why the second is marked as spam while the first one is just ok. • Properly escaping check_command in nagios

  When I execute sudo -u nagios /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_by_ssh.sh hostname "check_haproxy -u \"http://localhost:10000/haproxy?stats\;csv\"" it runs perfectly on the server. For this, I have this in my HAProxy.cfg define service { use generic-service hostgroup_name pwmail-ee-oxweb service_description HAProxy-ee servicegroups ssh-dep check_command check_by_ssh!check_haproxy -u \"http://localhost:10000/haproxy?stats\;csv\" contacts sysad,mail-hosting-rt } It doesn't work. Says that Return code of 127 is out of bounds - plugin may be missing. What am I doing wrong?
