• Windows XP computer can't see Windows 7 shares

  I am building a network containing notably a laptop running XP and a computer running Windows 7. Both computer have shared folders and the 7 has a shared printer, to which another laptop running 7 is able to print. If I attempt to see the laptop's network shares on the PC, everything works perfectly: I am able to see and enter the folders. The reverse operation however doesn't work. Xp doesn't see the Windows 7 PC. Other things to note: As mentioned above, another Windows 7 computer is able to see the printer and I can ping both computers from either PC. Both computers are in the same workgroup named ALLAITEMENT Password-protected shares are turned off on the PC. The 7 Computer uses 40/56 bit encryption The Windows XP laptop has SP3

• Remote desktop solution where the desktop sharing party contacts the computer it wants to share with

  I'm in a situation where I act as a sort of techinical support to my family and less techinically experienced friends. I'm looking for a remote desktop solution where it's possible to setup a "zero-install, double click an icon"-solution where the client computer contacts me so that I may interact with their desktop. The last part is important as the people in need of my help don't know how to configure their router or even the firewall software on their own computer. They are able to click an accept button when asked if a program should be able to make outgoing connections. They have many different kinds of routers, as well as software firewalls, and I rather not deal with the problem of how to connect to them using whatever as well as the actual problem they are having. It must be: Free of charge for non-commercial use. Possible to use it in a mode where the computer wanting to share its desktop should be able to make a connection to my computer. My computer has a DNS name we can use. Compatible with both Windows XP and Windows 7. Independent of a third party server or infrastructure. Explanations of the above: I don't want to spend money on it when I help them for free. If it's free as in freedom, all the better! I guess this boils down to being callable like showdesktopto.exe opscomputer.com where opscomputer.com is my computers DNS name. If that is possible then I can create a shortcut they can use to connect to me when they need help. It's nice if it's possible to specify a password or key file which I can use to authenticate myself, but it's not required. They use the OS which their machine comes installed with. That means Windows XP or 7. I want something which will work in the long run. Using a third party service which might not be available when I need it disqualified such solutions.

  I just got myself a wifi capable cell phone, but I dont have a wireless internet at home. I do have a wired unlimited internet connection on my computer, and I wonder whether there is any gadget that I can plug into my computer (maybe at the usb port?) with which I can turn my computer into a wifi access point? I mean, a dongle or something which will enable me to connect my phone to my computer's internet through wi-fi? Also, I dont know anything about networking, so would it be hard for me to set up a secure wifi point? Thank you for reading this question through. Hope I can buy some sort of adapter which is comparitively cheap.

• Computer disappeared from Workgroup

  I've a LAN that has 8 computers running Windows XP and only one (Computer A) running Windows Server 2003. When computer A boots, it shows up in all computers' Workgroups, but after 15-30 minutes, it disappears from the Workgroup in all computers, including itself. However, files can still be transferred from and to A via full path shortcuts and network drive maps still work. I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem or not, but if that particular computer is turned on while the LAN cable is plugged in, it doesn't connect to the network, but it connects if the cable is plugged in after the computer is run. Any tips why this is happening? Thanks.

• My Windows 8 computer does not come out of Standby

  My computer will not come out out of standby. It has had this issue ever since I bought it ~4 years ago. When I purchased it, It came with Vista, I have since upgraded it to 7 and now 8 Pro, each time hoping that it would fix the problem, each time finding that it did not. My computer is an HP Pavilion Model #: m9500y. The computer goes into standby, but does not come out of it properly. If Hybrid sleep in on, it does not respond at all. If Hybrid sleep is off, It comes out and I can see the desktop for a bit, but then the screen goes black again and I have to reboot. I have tried Running a sfc, and a chkdsk in case it's a corrupted file, but it hasn't helped. This isn't too serious an issue because I can just shutdown my computer and turn it on the old fashioned way, but it is annoying and I would appreciate some advice going forward as I'm currently stumped.

• Computer still in boot loop

  My computer is in a boot loop and despite all my efforts, I haven't been able to load windows XP with it. When the computer loads, I see some white loading bar at the bottom, then the windows XP loading screen, then the DELL boot screen, then windows XP loading screen, and it just keeps looping. The blue screen error is: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME Stop: 0x000000ED (0x823D6C08, 0xC000009C, 0x000000000, 0x000000000) I have booted using Hiren's mini XP, and ran CHKDSK /f /r, but it didn't affect the boot loop. Is there anything else I can try to get my computer to start up? I don't have my windows XP disc, but I have a dvd burner on another computer, and can burn a downloaded ISO if it could help me get out of this loop. Thanks!

  I have a Windows Server 2008 instance on Amazon EC2 (Amazon's cloud compute platform, which provides VMs in the cloud). It has an external IP, and I have an admin account on the box. I would like to 'bootstrap' this instance remotely i.e. I want to run commands to download, install and configure apps on it, all without having to log on even once. Also, I cannot use psexec on the source computer. I have figured out how to do this to a remote, domain-joined computer using WMI. However, I have NOT been able to do for a remote computer on EC2. Here are some specific restrictions: The remote computer is not part of my domain, hence no Kerberos The remote computer does not have a cert I trust, or vice versa I am sure I am running into to some auth/trust restriction. Is there any way I can run a single command on the remote, given that I have admin privileges? I'm not tied down to using WMI, but I do need to run a command somehow. Feels like this should be a solved problem.

• Accessing localhost on IIS7 from another computer on the network

  I recently upgraded computers to Windows 7 Professional and am running IIS7. When I'm on my computer I can easily access localhost through my web browser but when I try from another computer on my network (replacing localhost with my computer name) it doesn't work. I also tried using "computername.domain.com" and still no luck. I can access other computers running Windows XP and IIS 5 but I'm having no luck accessing my own from another computer. I checked and my IIS7 has anonymous users enabled. Am I missing any other setting? Is this an IIS7 thing or am I missing a setting? Thanks in advance!

• Performing mechanical movements using computer

  How to make a computer (in particular, my laptop) to perform some mechanical movements without buying anything $5, soldering things inside computer or creating big sophisticated circuits? Traditionally CD-ROM tray is used to make computer do some movement IRL by, for example, SSH command, but in laptop tray is one-shot (unless manually reloaded) and also not very comfortable [mis]usage. Some assistance circuits can be in use too, but not complex. For example, there is a little motor that can work on USB power. Devices in my computer: DVD-ROM tray: one-time push. USB power: continuous power to the motor or LEDS or relay that turns on something powerful. Audio card. 3 outputs (modprobe alsa model=test can set Mic and Line-in as additional output). One controllable DC output (microphone) that can power up LED and some electronic (may be even mechanic?) relay. Also with sophisticated additional circuiting can control a lot of devices with a good precision. Both input and output support. Probably the most useful object in computer for radio ham. Modem. Don't know about this much, it doesn't work because of hsfmodem crashes kernel if memory is = 1GB. May be it's "pick up" and "hang up" can turn on and off power taken from USB port? Video card. VGA port? S-Video port? Will them be useful? Backlight. Tunable, but probably unuseful. CardBus (or some) slot. Nothing interesting for the task probably (is it?). AC adapter and battery. Probably nothing programmable here. /* My AC adapter already have additional jacks to connect extra devics */ Keyboard. No use. Touchpad. Good sensor (synclient -m 1), but no output. Various LEDs inside laptop. Probably too weak and requires soldering. Fans inside laptop. Poor control over them, requires soldering and dangerous to tinker. HDD (internal and external) that can be spin down and up (hdparm -Y, cat /dev/ubb). But connecting anything serially with it's power line makes HDD underpowered... And too complex. Is something are missed? Any ideas how to use described components? Any other ideas? May be there are easily available /* in developing countries */ cheap devices like "enhanced multimeters" that are controllable from computer and can provide configurable output and measure current and other things? Things to aid pushing many physical buttons with computer. Isn't this a simple idea and implementation and a lot of use in good hands?

  I want my computer to start uTorrent at 4 o'clock in the morning, when I'm asleep. But the computer is a bit noisy so I put it to sleep mode every time I go to bed. I've tried creating a task in Task Scheduler with this parameters: Run whether user is logged in or not Daily At 4:00 every day Start a program "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe" Wake the computer to run this task I've tried to change the time to run to make sure the computer wakes up and runs uTorrent. • Computer not acknowledging sound card after move

  We just got our computer back from having moved and when I tried to hook our speaker system, the computer keeps telling me that I don't have a sound system installed. It's a Dell computer with the original surround/subwoofer system that it came with and was working fine before the move. I tried buying a new speaker system (Logitech) to see if it would work, but still saying I have no audio device installed and it's not showing up in my device manager. I opened up the computer and unplugged the sound card, then plugged it back in, still nothing. I put the install disc from the sound card in the cd-rom, but it's saying that I have no sound device hardware in my system.

  I installed ubuntu 10.04, Apache, PHP, mysql, smb. Everything work fine in locally in my IP. When i trying to access my computer from LAN (other computer), it shows unable to connect. when i ping my IP from remote computer, its pinging OK. I can access internet, and all other systems (http, smb). But the problem is no one can't access my computer remotely in my LAN network. My ip is 192.168.85.105 and i want access(Appaceh,SMB) from 192.168.85.10. Is there any proxy firewall settings? I had tried following commands.. sudo iptables -F or sudo iptables-restore [logout require] If it does not work then try to disable net-filter sudo ufw --disable Please give me the solution.

  I was doing a bit of scanning on my network lately, knew all the hostnames to each computer connected. But whilst pinging one of them ping returned Request timed out.. This is strange as I know the computer is online and that the computer responds correctly to pinging on a different (enterprise) network. Is there something on the computer, my network, or my computer that is bugging with this? - That's just a sub-question, I don't expect this to be the main answer. The real question: Why does this happen? Why does pinging the IP4 address not work? EDIT : Pinging the Hostname used to default to the IP4 address, but now it defaults to the IP6 address. Why does this happen? But now that it pings using IP6, how come it all of a sudden works? > ping -6 THE_COMPUTER Pinging THE_COMPUTER [lengthy IP6 address] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from [lengthy IP6 address]: time=1ms Reply from [lengthy IP6 address]: time=1ms Reply from [lengthy IP6 address]: time=1ms Reply from [lengthy IP6 address]: time=1ms Ping stats: Sent = 4, Recieved = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss) But when this is done using IP4 it doesn't work.   Hello My goal is to use three monitors with my Linux system. It is a laptop, so adding another video card is not the easiest solution. (I have investigated a number of such options: getting a docking station with a PCI slot, USB/Cardbus vga adapters, etc, and for the time being don't want to go that way.) I am wondering if using an older desktop+screen I have lying around as the third "monitor" might be the easiest solution, if only there is a way to get it to work as a seamless, integrated desktop. I was wondering if I can use VNC or perhaps X itself (?) to achieve the following: computer A is my main computer; it has all my files, etc. computer B is used just to display on an additional screen keyboard+mouse are connected to computer A use VNC or X to connect the two so that computer B shows a X screen that is just as if it was a third physical screen connected to computer A. I don't know if the last point is clear, but what I mean is that I would like to be able to: be able to have my window manager assign/move around virtual desktops on all three screens move windows back and forth between the screens attached to computer A and the screen of computer B be able to copy something in an app being shown on a screen of computer A and paste it into an app being shown on the screen attached to computer B access the filesystem on my main computer (A) when using applications that are being shown on the screen attached to computer B Basically, I would like X to treat computer B just like it was nothing but a third physical screen... • Different BSOD every time I turn on computer

  Please help. Every time I turn on computer I receive a different BSOD. I can't even give my computer info because I haven't been able to stay on it long enough. The following are the BSOD that I just received in the last hour. IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA BAD_POOL_HEADER MEMORY_MANAGEMENT I has also started with Windows Error Recovey which I have done but that has froze on me or hasn't helped. I have also reset computer to its original state. Now as soon as I turn on it goes to a BSOD almost immediately. I know you need more info about computer, so if you can tell me what info it is you need, I will get it. I can tell you that it is a desktop.

Just recently I started to think, can they access my home folder and copy all the files from there? I have Windows 7 Pro. • Computer keeps restarting [closed]

  I have a strange problem with my desktop pc, when I start it, it just restarts immediately, it displays the bios/motherboard logo and then restarts. I can't access the bios to edit settings because it restarts to fast. Then I tried different things to fix it with mixed success. (I also tried to reset the bios without success) I noticed that a capacity from the graphics card was broken (it looked exploded) so I ordered a new graphics card & plugged it in the computer. It didn't change much, still the same problem. Then I unplugged everything that's not necessary and put only 1Gig RAM in the motherboard (usually it has 4 x 1Gig RAM) and the computer started, then I putted another gig of RAM and the computer still started. (starting=booting windows) When I putted in the 3th RAM it didn't boot anymore (again restarting all the time) so I removed this 3th gig of RAM and this is where it gets weird. I expected the computer to boot again because it is exactly the same configuration as before - which worked - but the computer didn't want to start. It just gave the same problem as before (restarting all the time.. ) Anyone an idea what might be wrong?

Problem occurs several times daily Does not appear to be any "triggering event" - user is simply using Gmail normally when the problem arises User can access their Gmail from other computers on same LAN User can access all other sites, including other Google sites, from affected computer After several mins of outage, Gmail will spontaneously resume normal operation on affected computer The problem occurs in all browsers (Chrome, FF, Safari) Computer: MacBook Pro, OSX 10.7.3, latest browsers I find this very baffling. Any advice welcome.
