  • Calculating the maximum distance between elements of vector in Matlab

    Lets assume that we have a vector like x = -1:0.05:1; ids = randperm(length(x)); x = x(ids(1:20)); I would like to calculate the maximum distance between the elements of x in some idiomatic way. It would be easy to just iterate over all possible combinations of x's elements but I feel like there could be a way to do it with Matlab's built-in functions in some crazy but idiomatic way. Any ideas?

  • C++ Allocate Memory Without Activating Constructors

    I'm reading in values from a file which I will store in memory as I read them in. I've read on here that the correct way to handle memory location in C++ is to always use new/delete, but if I do: DataType* foo = new DataType[sizeof(DataType) * numDataTypes]; Then that's going to call the default constructor for each instance created, and I don't want that. I was going to do this: DataType* foo; char* tempBuffer=new char[sizeof(DataType) * numDataTypes]; foo=(DataType*) tempBuffer; But I figured that would be something poo-poo'd for some kind of type-unsafeness. So what should I do? And in researching for this question now I've seen that some people are saying arrays are bad and vectors are good. I was trying to use arrays more because I thought I was being a bad boy by filling my programs with (what I thought were) slower vectors. What should I be using???

  • multi-thread in MS Access, async processing

    I know that title sounds crazy but here is my situation. After a certain user event I need to update a couple tables that are "unrelated" to what the user is currently doing. Currently this takes a couple seconds to execute and causes the user a certain amount of frustration. Is there a way to perform my update in a second process or in a manner that doesn't "freeze" the UI of my app while it is processing? Thanks

    I have a direct3d project that uses D3DXCreateTextureFromFile() to load some images. This function takes a LPCWSTR for the path to file. I want to load a series of textures that are numbered consecutively (ie. MyImage0001.jpg, MyImage0002.jpg, etc) But c++'s crazy strings confuse me. How do i: for(int i=0; i < 3;i++) { //How do I convert i into a string path i can use with D3DXCreateTextureFromFile? }

  • Git/SVN for asp.net development instead of VSS?

    At work, we are using ASP.net 2.0 and VSS. VSS is a beast, we are continually having issues with people checking out files and there is no branching - makes it crazy. I know SVN/GIT is mainly used by open source developers, are there any downsides to ASP.NET developers using it? I have been pushing for SVN internally, but am thinking GIT might also be a great option. Our team is spread across 3 continents.

  • Can I view a list of public variables of some Adobe Air app or web flash file from another app?

    I was thinking about creating making AIM pluggin that checks pandora one (desktop) or pandora website periodically to see what is currently playing and update a user's status. I suppose the main question is there a clever way to access a "public" variable from some open Adobe Air process? I KNOW this sounds like some crazy security flaw, but it may also be a feature. I am pretty sure javascript can potentially handle it. Thanks!

  • Is it possible to use Dependency Injection/IoC on an ASP.NET MVC FilterAttribute ?

    Hi folks, I've got a simple custom FilterAttribute which I use decorate various ActionMethods. eg. [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Get)] [MyCustomFilter] public ActionResult Bar(...) { ... } Now, I wish to add some logging to this CustomFilter Action .. so being a good boy, I'm using DI/IoC ... and as such wish to use this pattern for my custom FilterAttribute. So if i have the following... ILoggingService and wish to add this my custom FilterAttribute .. i'm not sure how. Like, it's easy for me to do the following... public class MyCustomFilterAttribute : FilterAttribute { public MyCustomFilterAttribute(ILoggingService loggingService) { ... } } But the compiler errors saying the attribute which decorates my ActionMethod (listed above...) requires 1 arg .. so i'm just not sure what to do :(

    I have installed XAMPP on my computer which is Windows 8 pro. I use to work with Windows 7 every time I run the index.php file on Windows 8 it shows the code on the browser IE10. Here is what I have done: I have named the file correctly: index.php I have installed the server and saved the files inside c:/xampp/htdocs/PHP/ I have used to open and close all PHP tags and everything else seems working fine, like, PHPMyAdmin, and the Ini file I don't know whats wrong and it is driving me crazy ...   • ASP.NET MVC Programming

    So here's the deal I'm working on a project that I had originally focused on Zend Framework, But now I want to get into ASP.NET MVC and boy lets just say it's good and a great start though i'm still at the beginning stage of it. But I am having issues with passing Data From My Controller to the Master / Layout Page. Now in Zend I am able to determine which controller and which action I am in through a helper I created. Now I want to implement the same functionality in this ASP.NET MVC application. So my Master Layout Page knows which Controller I am in and hence highilighting the navigation for it. I am using a straight custom html li a structure navigation. Any help on this specific topic would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to safely let users run arbitrary Ruby code?

    I realize this sounds a little crazy, but I'm working on a project for which I need a server to run user-provided Ruby code and return the result. I'm looking to prevent something like this: system("rm -rf /") eval("something_evil") # etc...     I am a template designer and I want to create one wordpress with all generic posts, but I don't want to have to keep logging in and copy & pasteing the same wordpress posts everytime. Can I point multiple WP installs to one database? A harder way would be export a master db and importing it to each install.     How do I stop VS 2010 (RC) from autocompleting html helpers with new object { ... } when I just want to pass in an anonymous type? Backspacing is driving me crazy. e.g., VS wants: <%=Html.ActionLink("Register", "Register", new object { controller = "Account" }) %> I know the helper is declared expecting object, which is why it does this, but can I change this behavior just for mvc helpers?

  • Wrong extraction of .attr("href") in IE7 vs all other browsers?

    Can it really be true that the attr("href") command for a link is handled very different in IE7 in comparison to all other browsers? Let's say I have a page at http://example.com/page.html and I have this HTML: <a href="#someAnchor" class="lnkTest">Link text</a> and this jQuery: var strHref = $(".lnkTest").attr("href"); Then in IE7 the value of the strHref variable will be "http://example.com/page.htm#someAnchor" but in other browsers it will be "#someAnchor". I believe that the last mentioned case is the most correct one, so is it just a case of IE7 being a bad boy or is it a bug in jQuery?

Is there some package that works similar to verbatim (i.e., accept any input) but formats the text nicely?
