• Tinting iPhone application screen red

  I'm trying to place a red tint on all the screens of my iPhone application. I've experimented on a bitmap and found I get the effect I want by compositing a dark red color onto the screen image using Multiply (kCGBlendModeMultiply). So the question is how to efficiently do this in real time on the iPhone? One dumb way might be to grab a bitmap of the current screen, composite into the bitmap and then write the composited bitmap back to the screen. This seems like it would almost certainly be too slow. In addition, I need some way of knowing when part of the screen has been redrawn so I can update the tinting. I can almost get the effect I want by putting a red, translucent, fullscreen UIView above everything. That tints everything red within further intervention on my part, but the effect is much "muddier" than results from the composite. So do any wizards out there know of some mechanism I can use to automatically composite the red over the app in similar fashion to what the translucent red UIView does?

• Not able to override CSS within IFrame

  I am using disqus comments for my jekyll blog with some CSS styles overriden in my stylesheet and used to work perfectly. Recently, disqus has introduced a new UI for their comments system which has completely broken the font colors. Since my site has dark background, I am trying to apply styles based on new disqus HTML structure generated. However, it seems that none of my styles get applied. It seems that is because disqus is loaded within iframe. Any ideas how can I fix the font colors. • PHP + GD: imagetruecolortopalette not keeping transparency

  I am using GD to output an image that is a truecolor+alpha channel PNG file using imagepng just fine. However, I would like to have the ability to also output an ie6-compatible 256-color PNG as well. According to the official documentation for imagetruecolortopalette: The code has been modified to preserve as much alpha channel information as possible in the resulting palette, in addition to preserving colors as well as possible. However, I am finding that the results of this function do not properly preserve any transparency at all. I used this firefox image with text superimposed on top of it as a test, and all the function did was give me a white background and a weird dark blue border. I know that I can't hope to preserve the full alpha channel, but surely this function would at least pick up on the transparent background. Is there something I'm missing? Are there any alternative approaches that I can take?

• jQuery - color cycle animation with hsv colorspace?

  Hi there, I am working on a project, which I need a special body-background for. The background-color should cycle through the color spectrum like a mood light. So I found this: http://buildinternet.com/2009/09/its-a-rainbow-color-changing-text-and-backgrounds/ "But" this snippet is working with the RGB colorspace which has some very light and dark colors in it. Getting just bright colors will only work with the HSV colorspace (e.g. having S and V static at 100 and letting H cycle). I don’t know how to convert and in fact how to pimp this snippet for my needs. Does anyone has an idea?? Thanks in advance. Best, Floyd

• Problems with Tomcat server and JSP web application

  I am running a JSP/Servlet Web application and out of nowhere we experienced some random problems that don't make any sense. I checked the catalina.out file to check the log files, and I noticed it contained some of the following messages SEVERE: Error starting static Resources java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid or unreadable WAR file : error in opening zip file INFO: validateJarFile(/home/weremo/appservers/ apache-tomcat-6.0.26/webapps /WMA/WEB-INF/lib/ servlet-api.jar) - jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class I am aware of what this message means, but am in the dark as to what could have caused it, or what effects it could have on the application.

• iframe/lightbox refresh issues

  Hi Please check out: http://gherkin.co.nz/refresh/ and click on the purple box that says 'Membership chest' You should then see some form fields in an iframe in the lightbox. If you click on the "GO" button, the page will change (currently Not found, which is fine for now). If you click the dark area to close the box, then click the purple card again - it will take you back to the not found page. When called, I want the content to always go back to the page specified in the iframe src, not the last page. Can it go back to the first specified page on this second click? Does that make sense? basically I want the iframe/lightbox to refresh its content each time it is called.

  Hello, I am trying to code and style a box which will contain a post. My problem is with multiple borders (i guess), trying to find the best way to code this, i prefer semantic HTML5 and CSS3, but if there is no other way, i can do "old style" with 3 divs (top, center, bottom) with css background: url..., can anyone give me some lights please? • Sending BCC emails using a SMTP server?

Basically, whenever I try to send an email with BCCs via SMTP the BCC addresses are not hidden - I've read the whole RFC for the SMTP protocol (a couple years ago) and I don't think I'm missing anything. The strange thing is, if I send an email with BCCs using the built-in mail() function everything works just right and I've no idea why - I would like to roll my own email sender but I fail to understand this. Can someone please shed some light into this dark subject?

• Internet Explorer changes brightness

  I have a very annoying problem with IE8 on Vista: My screen brightness changes when I view a page with IE. It slowly dimms brightness some 20% - enough to be noticeable. This seems to be dependent on the OVERALL brightness of the page viewed or of the amount of bright space on the page... sometimes it dimms down if the page is bright, sometimes the complete different, it dimms when lot of dark space is on the page. I know this sounds weird, I cannot describe it better. It takes about one,two seconds from on brightness level to the other. This ONLY occurs in IE - not in Word or any other application. Please help! This dimming is very stressfull for my eyes.

• Colors in Instruments when hunting down memory leaks

  Hi I'm currently hunting down a memory leak in my app for iPhone. I'm using Instruments to track down the code that is causing the leak (becoming more and more a friend of Instruments!). Now Instruments show two lines: one in dark blue (row 146) and one in a lighter blue (150). From some trial and error I get that they are connected somehow, but not good enough at Objective-C and Memory Management yet to really understand how. Does anyone know why different colors are used and what could be my problem? I have tried to release numberForArray but the the app crashes when showing the last line in a picker view. All ideas appreciated! (Posting this I also realize that line 139 is redundant! Se there, already an improvement ;-)

• SQL Server Import table keeping default values

  I am importing a table from one database to another in SQL Server 2008 by right-clicking the target database and choosing Tasks Import Data... When I import the table I get the column names and types and all the data fine, but I lose the primary key, identity specifications and all the default values that were set in the source table. So now I have to set all the default values for each column again manually. Is there any way to get the default values with the import, or even after with a Query? I am VERY new to this and flailing in the dark, so forgive me if this is a really stupid question...

  I would love to get a definitive answer or a glossary that defines the data returned from the Facebook ads api adcampaignstats. Specifically the difference between the actions and inline_actions. • Understanding run time code interpretation and execution

  I'm creating a game in XNA and was thinking of creating my own scripting language (extremely simple mind you). I know there's better ways to go about this (and that I'm reinventing the wheel), but I want the learning experience more than to be productive and fast. When confronted with code at run time, from what I understand, the usual approach is to parse into a machine code or byte code or something else that is actually executable and then execute that, right? But, for instance, when Chrome first came out they said their JavaScript engine was fast because it compiles the JavaScript into machine code. This implies other engines weren't compiling into machine code. I'd prefer not compiling to a lower language, so are there any known modern techniques for parsing and executing code without compiling to low level? Perhaps something like parsing the code into some sort of tree, branching through the tree, and comparing each symbol and calling some function that handles that symbol? (Wild guessing and stabbing in the dark)

  I recently encountered a printing issue in Firefox that eventually turned out to be a problem with the fieldset tag we wrapped the entire page in. (Bugzilla: Bug 471015) All browsers have their own rendering quirks and issues, but it can be very hard to know what's causing different behaviors. Sure, you can Google, but that's often taking a shot in the dark about what you think is causing the problem. It also doesn't stop you from having to sort through multiple complains about the same behavior before you find someone who has the issue your looking for. Are there any websites out there that let you search for rendering behavior issues by browser version, browser function, css tag, or html tag? I've seen this SO Question, Wanted: Resource for documented Cross-Browser differences, but I'd like to find something more detailed that includes browser bugs.

• Setting the Cursor Position in a Win32 Console Application

  How can I set the cursor position in a Win32 Console application? Preferably, I would like to avoid making a handle and using the Windows Console Functions. (I spent all morning running down that dark alley; it creates more problems than it solves.) • JS 2 minute countdown then execute a function?

  I'm not that great at Javascript, for the record! I DO know how to use ajax. I just need a bit of help. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to display a 5 minute countdown, and once the countdown hits zero, to run a function. I need to pass a variable to the function that needs to run. I tried SetInterval but this isn't exactly my strong suit. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can post the code I've got, but I would equate it to a gorilla fumbling in the dark at a typewriter!

• How to adjust video recording brightness?

  When I record videos in low-light conditions on my Motorola Droid results are poor... very dark images. On my old phone, an LG Dare, recording in low light works better thanks to a brightness adjustment in the video recorder which can be set manually... Android does not have a similar brightness adjustment when recording video. Does anyone have suggestions for how to adjust the brightness using Android's APIs? I have searched the official APIs, but I cannot find a way to control brightness.

• Download office document without the web server trying to render it

  I'm trying to download an InfoPath template that's hosted on SharePoint. If I hit the url in internet explorer it asks me where to save it and I get the correct file on my disk. If I try to do this programmatically with WebClient or HttpWebRequest then I get HTML back instead. How can I make my request so that the web server returns the actual xsn file and doesn't try to render it in html. If internet explorer can do this then it's logical to think that I can too. I've tried setting the Accept property of the request to application/x-microsoft-InfoPathFormTemplate but that hasn't helped. It was a shot in the dark.

  I am absolutely in the dark when it comes to this request payload that I'm seeing in my Chrome browser. A Query string will have a variable attached like session:2g0SoEE but this payload has just one long string I'm guessing is in base64. I do understand that the request payload can have whatever, but how do I use it? Can I do a post with jquery and send this request payload? For example: $.post(url, {variable: "variable"}, function(data){}); When this posts it will send &variable=variable this will be found as query string parameter in the headers sent in chrome. In this game I'm playing I see another piece of info being sending in the header called a payload request. I'm a confused as to how this is read, used, made, how I can reduplicate this? • NSColor, 10.6 and Gamma 2.2

  With Snow Leopard the default gamma changed from 1.8 to 2.2. I happen to be working on a few Mac apps that use a very dark custom colour scheme provided by Cocoa. On 10.5 it looks fine but on 10.6 with the new gamma it's much darker and really hard on the eyes. The colour scheme is defined using numerous [NSColor colorWithCalibratedRed:green:blue:alpha:] objects within a theme class. Is there any way to 'convert' an NSColor object so that it displays on 10.6 exactly as it would on 10.5 with the old 1.8 gamma? I know this can be achieved globally from within System Preferences but that's not what I'm after.

If you read that in a well lit room, the black-on-white will be the most pleasant to read. If you read it in a dark room, the white-on-black will be nicer. • Fadeout a tiled background image in load using JQuery

  Hi, I've used JQuery in the past to fade divs in and out successfully. However, I have encountered a situation I can't quite wrap my head around: I am coding a site for a designer who has based the formatting of all the elements on a grid pattern he's created. As he wants the pattern elements to be the same size independent of the browser window, I think I can only do this via a repeating background tiled image in CSS. Now he wants the background pattern (only) to come in dark and fade to very light, while not effecting any of the other elements. Am I right in thinking it's impossible to call a tiled background pattern using a CSS selector? Does anyone have any suggestions of a workaround to this problem?

  Having an input <input type="text" id="myTest" value="bla bla bla"/> and doing this (using jQuery) $('#myTest').select(); causes "bla bla bla" to be selected with default dark blue selection color. Now, is there any way I can change this color using css? css3 can change selection using for instance ::-moz-selection { background: #ffb7b7; } but this only works on text in other elements, not in html inputs. Any ideas? /T

The area is moving, so I must have fine control of the current frame and move the position of the blur area accordingly. Blur is an option, but also a dark mask is fine too.   I have had an issue with our replication process and would like to salvage some data. I have a process in place where I will connect to each subscriber before flagging them for reinitialization and I will run the below to pull any data they may have entered in during the "dark time". I am pretty sure this will work in a vanilla palace. What I am unsure of is whether the Global Temporary Table will persist through DB Replication. To be clear, I am not trying to Replicate the TempTable, I just want to make sure it will still exist at the local DB after the Replication so I may run the INSERT from it. Thoughts?
