  • SQL Server 2005 Express: upgrading to SP3 in mixed-mode installations

    I'm having trouble upgrading SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to SP3. The SP1 install uses mixed mode authentication (so there is an sa password). This is the message I get: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Setup ------------------------------ None of the selected features can be installed or upgraded. Setup cannot proceed since no effective change is being made to the machine. To continue, click Back and then select features to install. To exit SQL Server Setup, click Cancel.   • How to activate Win XP from Windows 7 compatibility mode on MacOS Parallels 5

    I am running Parallels Desktop 5.0.9344 for Mac. I am running Mac OS 10.6.3 10D2094 I have bought a retail copy of Window 7 professional specifically because I need the XP compatibility. Windows 7 is installed and working. I have problems with the XP activation Windows7 'Virtual PC' does not run under Parallels (strange error about Server Execution failed 0x80080005). I have used the Parallels Transporter to convert the "Windows XP Mode Base.vhd" file into a parallels Virtual Machine. This copy of XP now starts normally, however it records itself as unregistered. There was a KEY.txt file in the same directory as the .vhd file; although this file contains a valid-looking activation key, it does not appear to activate the instance of XP. I have also tried to enter the Win7 activation key; this does not work either. I have tried calling the two phone numbers; an automated system asked me to enter 56 digits through the telephone and then accused me of being a pirate. I believe it may be possible to install Win7 via Bootcamp, start WinXP under Virtual PC, activate it and then import this activated .vhd into Parallels; but that seems a long way round, and is far from certain. What can I do to get WinXP running under Mac Parallels Desktop ?

  • Linux boot - stop the kernel switching to a new framebuffer mode clearing output

    I'm working on an embedded system (based onUbuntu 12.04 LTS) and I'm customizing its kernel. I'm having some problem with upstart, mountall and plymouth. Nothing unsolvable I suppose, but the real problem is that I can't diagnose properly what's going on because the kernel (or maybe plymouth) changes the video mode in the middle of the boot process. This completely wipes entire lines of log and prevents any debugging of kernel misconfigurations.     I've found boolean mode of MySQL full text search useful, however there are a couple of things I can't seem to figure out how to achieve. For instance imagine I have a full text column containing the words "Steve's Javascript Tutorial - Part One". I would like to match this for each of the following searches: "tutorials", "javascript tutorials", "java", "java script", "script" Imagine that each of those searches is simply assigned to a variable in whatever language may be being used (I always use PHP).     I'm trying to get Notifications in Background Mode by running a method every minute to see if there are new notifications. This works great in Active Mode, but I saw for background mode it is restricted to 7 keys. I enabled the Background Mode with the option Background Fetch, but seems like the method is being called but it's not complete. In AppDelegate I'm calling: - (void)applicationDidEnterBackground:(UIApplication *)application { //This has a Timer to execute every minute [self GetNotifications]; //This executes a NSMutableURLRequest *request //giving back the JSON data with the notifications } I would like to do something like Facebook does for Notifications.   • Enable Full Screen Mode in Media Center Without Trapping the Mouse

    If you have a dual monitor setup and use Windows Media Center, you’re probably aware that when WMC is in full screen mode, it traps the mouse so you can’t work on a second monitor. Here we look at how to solve the annoyance. The Maxifier is an application that allows you to open Media Center in full screen mode without restricting the mouse. It relieves the annoyance of WMC capturing your mouse on a dual monitor setup. Note: If you don’t have two monitors attached, most of The Maxifier’s functions won’t work. Installation and Use Download, extract, and install The Maxifier. (See the download link below) The Maxifier runs minimized in the system tray and you access the options by right-clicking on the icon. If Media Center is not already open, you can choose Start Media Center to start WMC on the main start screen. Or, choose one of the other selections to open another area of Media Center. By default, Maxifier opens Media Center in full screen mode on the secondary monitor. When Media Center is open in full screen mode, you’ll notice you can now freely move your mouse around your multi-monitor setup. When Media Center is open, you’ll see five additional options. The Fit Screen options simply fits Media Center to the full screen, but still show the Windows borders. Full screen options put WMC in full screen mode.   The Maxifier Options allow you to choose from the various start up options. Selecting Watch for Media Center starting will prompt Maxifier to open WMC to the main start page in full screen mode on the secondary monitor automatically, even if you open Media Center without using The Maxifier.  (You may need to restart for this to take effect) If you have more than 2 monitors, you can define on which monitor to open Media Center, and which monitor you consider to be the main screen.   You can also define a number of Hotkeys in The Maxifier settings. First, select the Enable Hotkeys checkbox. To create a Hotkey, click in the text field and then press the keys to use as the Hotkey. To remove a Hotkey, click in the field and press the Delete key.   Conclusion The Maxifier is a simple program that enables Media Center users to take full advantage of a multi-monitor workspace. The hardstatus window title is updated to the name of the currently running program, and then switches back to the default title shortly after execution is finished. One major problem, however, is that this escape string is not escaped itself, causing line-wrapping problems with commands longer than the initial line. This was annoying, so I set out looking for a solution. Turns out, simply escaping the previous escape sequence corrects line wrapping: [\033k]\[\033\\\] Great! My hardstatus window title still updates to the name of the currently running program, and now my longer commands wrap to the second line correctly. However, with this new escape sequence in my PS1, screen updates the window title to the actual command I am typing, not simply the name of the current program once it is executed.   • Screen recording in Windows 8 makes PC unusable?

    OS used: Windows 8 Pro x64 Hi there, I got a weird problem. I tried to record my screen using different screen recording applications like Camtasia7, Hypercam, and some others. So if I hit "record" everything works fine for about 3-4 seconds. Then the PC slows down heavily caused by extremly high IO usage. The PC gets nearly unusable and laggs like hell. I can't switch applications, can't get TaskManager with Ctrl+Alt+Del, or something else without waiting 1-3 Minutes. After about 5-8 Minutes and a bit of luck I am sometimes able to end the process of the recorder and IO calms down very slow(100% IO lasts for about 2 Minutes before becoming normal). I don't know why this happens. Screen recorders that support Windows 8 aren't out afaik but at least Camtasia7 worked with Windows 8 Developer Preview and Windows 8 Release Preview (only had to change record method to .avi). No slow downs or something else. Is there anyone out there who knows this problem too? Is there maybe a solution to this problem?

    I have an old dell latitude d610 that I've just installed ubuntu 12.10 onto, and now unfortunately it will not complete booting up. The screen flashes purple but then fades out and dies. I'm fairly sure there is an issue with graphics drivers, as I had to turn on "nomodeset" in the options when installing off a DVD to see the installer, but I'm very new to linux and don't know terribly much at all apart from what I've read on the net. I have been able to hold down shift and bring up GRUB, and entered into recovery mode, and when I enter into the low graphics mode, the xserver log file says it can detect a screen but found none with a useable configuration, then goes on to say a fatal server error has occurred and no screen have been found at all, telling me to check a log file at "/var/log/xorg.0.log" I have no idea how to check this specific log file! Attempting to actually go further than this in low graphics mode and restart the display simply artefacts the screen. It is all very strange and annoying because I did once by random have the machine boot completely for no apparent reason, but upon restarting the issue reoccurred.

  • Xubuntu 12.04 : Random boot to black screen

    My xubuntu 12.04 has worked flawlessly since install in September. However, lately I randomly have the following boot issue : The computer boots to grub, and after choosing xubuntu either boots normally or boots to a black screen. Here are some observations I have made : The black screen seems to happen randomly. The black screen does not seem to happen in safe mode (- nomodeset in grub). The black screen does not allow me to ctrl + alt + F1-6 into a terminal. The black screen allows me to use SysRq keys (Alt + SysRq + K does not work though). The black screen often happens on first boot in several hours and the computer usually boots normally after a RSEINUB. When the computer boots I get "SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xfec000f0 already in use" at startup and "Could not write bytes: broken pipe" at shutdown. However research on these errors did not yield answers to my particular issue. Comparing Xorg.0.log (successful boot) and Xorg.0.log.old (black screen), and reading the answers to similar problem, it seems that I might have a X driver issue. However the system worked flawlessly since lately. Additional info on my system : ACER AO722 C62kk Operating system : 3.2.0-31-generic ubuntu Edit : I made a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04 x64, the issue is still there ... (I have a separate /home so config. files were not erased). Edit 2 : I followed troubleshooting blank screen, so my new observations are without quiet and splash in grub : When the system boots normally, the screen goes black after grub then lights up and displays text information then goes to login screen. (After that the desktop starting time vary substantially, which is new and may be a separate issue ?). When the boot fails, after grub the screen goes black, lights up, goes black, lights up again and most times goes black again. At this point it responds to Alt+SysReq K by lighting up but no more, and has to be rebooted through Alt+SysReq+ RSEINUB. Thank you for your time and attention in advance ! Thibaud Ruelle

  • Are there any good reasons to intentionally serve a new web site in Quirks mode?

    I was a little surprised that Amazon's site doesn't specify a doctype, and is rendered in quirks mode. What could possibly be the reason for this? I understand what quirks mode is and why doctypes were introduced, but I can't understand why this would be intentionally left off. I guess it might simplify markup if they're trying to support ancient browsers, but isn't that like shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to modern browsers, especially when their site is so Javascript rich? Does this level the playing field when it comes to supporting really old browsers? Is there something else I'm missing?

  • Strange problem with MySQL full text query

    This probably has something to do with my understanding of full text search or perhaps a known issue. My Java code creates search term for full text search on MySQL like this - +word* This works fine if the value in the DB column contains more text than the word itself. However, if the value is exact - no result are returned. I expected it to return results when value is an exact match. Let me give an example - Assume that DB has column name with value "Manish", now if I search with this - +Manis* It does return the result correctly, but if I try this - +Manish* It doesn't return any result, though exact match exists in DB column - Name. How can I obtain the desired behaviour in both these cases? Removing + sign works, but it returns far too many results when there are two or more words. Any help, pointers would be highly appreciated! I am using MySQL 5.0 TIA, - Manish

  • Entity Framework, full-text search and temporary tables

    I have a LINQ-2-Entity query builder, nesting different kinds of Where clauses depending on a fairly complex search form. Works great so far. Now I need to use a SQL Server fulltext search index in some of my queries. Is there any chance to add the search term directly to the LINQ query, and have the score available as a selectable property? If not, I could write a stored procedure to load a list of all row IDs matching the full-text search criteria, and then use a LINQ-2-Entity query to load the detail data and evaluate other optional filter criteria in a loop per row. That would be of course a very bad idea performance-wise. Another option would be to use a stored procedure to insert all row IDs matching the full-text search into a temporary table, and then let the LINQ query join the temporary table. Question is: how to join a temporary table in a LINQ query, as it cannot be part of the entity model?
