• Windows 7 won't show SATA Hard Drive in My Computer

  I have clean install of Windows 7 x64 with two SATA hard drives. When I open My Computer, I can see only the drive where Windows are installed (and all partitions), but I don't see the other one. When I go to disk manager, I can see that both drives are detected and the one that I don't see in My Computer is also marked as Primary, but when I right click, the Open and Browse are gray. I also checked drives with gparted on live Ubuntu and they both seem to work correctly, the second drive wasn't marked hidden or anything else. Before installing Windows 7, I had Windows XP, where both drives worked properly.

• Looking for a laptop with a removable hard drive

  At the moment, I possess a Dell Inspiron 6400. Just removing two screws, I've made the drive removable (look here) and I can pull it off in one second. The new Inspiron and Studio laptops don't support this anymore (the drive is no more on the side but on the back of the laptop). So I’m looking for a new laptop having this kind of feature, or one that can be modded easily. • Time Machine/iMac loses all trace of external hard drive after a few days

  First time posting, also a Mac newbie (recent windows convert) so I'm hoping I can get some help here :) I have a Hitachi Deskstar drive in an external casing that I got from ebuyer. (its one of those unknown fairly cheapish enclosures) connected via firewire. I hook it up and it works fine, but then at some point over the next week or so I'll realise that my last update was 3 days ago or so. At this point the Mac will not recognise the drive as existing and the only thing to do is switch off and on the external enclosure. It then works fine for a while. If I had to guess I'm assuming its powering down or something when the Mac goes into standby? Is there anyway to solve this?

• ASUS EeePC 1001PX, hard disk clicking in Ubuntu Maverick

  I just received my new Asus EeePC 1001px netbook. After installing Ubuntu 10.10 on it, I've noticed that my hard drive is making a clicking noise. Now this is not a loud clicking noise nor it's constant (only sounds occasionally and when hard disk is not writing or reading anything). Another strange thing is, this only happens when netbook is using battery power, the moment I plug in AC power clicking stops. Additionally I noticed that when I go into BIOS I can hear the click only once, same thing happens if I boot Ubuntu from USB. That led me to believe the problem is within operating system. I did all the surface scans and SMART tests and everything seems to be fine. Now noise sounds like heads are trying to "park" themselves so I tried disabling "spin down" option in Power Management but it didn't help. Any idea?

I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

• harddrive problem (usb external)

  Hey guys I am using a Maxtor One Touch 3 given to my by my uncle. It is connected through USB2.0 When I plug it in, XP installs it and says "the device is ready to use". But it dosnt show up on my computer. It dosn't even show up in disk mangement. I then install Acronis Disk Director (which detects it) but marks it as offline. if i try to change it to online, nothing happens. (actually the lights on the HD blink - meaning communication and goes back into offline mode). The lights on the HD return to a solid which mean "working properly". • How full is too full for mechanical hard drives?

  I have heard many claim that it doesn't matter how full a drive is until it starts cutting into temp and virtual memory space. This doesn't make sense to me, given the nature of how the data is transacted on a hard drive. The inside of the platter presents less data per revolution than the outside of the drive does, by significant factors. The inside 40% of the radius of full size hard drive is used for the spindle, so only the outside 60% is used for data storage, but that still means that the inside track of a hard drive presents data 60% slower than the outside track. By my calculation, a Hard drive that is only 10% full should perform about 2.25 times faster than a hard drive that is 90% full, assuming that the flow is constrained by other factors. Am I wildly off base here? For all the drives I know, even the top speeds of the first 1% of the drive would be well within the bandwidth provided by a SATA 2 connection.

• Tests for hard drive health

  I have a 5-year old hard drive (bought new at the time), but it was sitting in my closet for 5 years, unused. I have just started using it, and seems to be getting a whirring sound (rather distinct from the other noises like fans etc.). I ran a few diagnostics tests, like Seagate's SeaTools, and the SMART test, and a few generic tests and all passed. Should I be concerned? Is there any other test that I should run? It's an internal IDE WD 5400RPM drive. Being used for a desktop, which is itself pretty high-end (AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, AMD Radeon GPU etc.), but would be used rather occasionally to begin with (avg. 1-2 hrs. per day). Thanks for any pointers.

  I've an 500 GB Seagate External Hard Disk (NTFS) . Currently, I can't open it at Windows. Thus, I've tired with chkdsk command .. but still it stopped and can't continue checking disk.. Also I've tired with fsck on Mac . • Hard drive is working fine then next boot up shows up as a unformatted.

  The drive is a Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB. There are no SMART errors and the drive sounds healthy. Restarted the computer from the drive working fine and then noticed that the drive had the same drive letter but has RAW as the file system. I have a few file/partition recovery software titles available but since doing any scans on this drive takes about 2.5 hours I wanted to know if any one had any advice.

  For a few days now I have a problem with my 500GB internal hard disk. I am on Linux Mint 13 but I have the same problem with my Windows installation. When running fdisk -l I can see my hard disk (same on BIOS) but I can't mount it even via the disk utility program. In Windows XP I can see it on the My Computer menu but when I click it, it say's: D:\ is not accessible The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable Is there a way to fix it? Or at least save some of my files and format it? Should I be thinking about the worst-case scenario e.g. my HDD is dead? Edit: The filesystem is NTFS.

  I have a Windows 2003 server running a SSH server (WRQ Reflection), how would I ssh to it and specify a specific drive letter? (like the D: drive) ex: from another workstation: ssh [email protected] d: When I do that it fails and I get this error: "exec request failed on channel 0" If I simply SSH to that same windowsbox without trying to specify a drive letter I get a Windows (CMD.EXE) command prompt shell on the C: drive. • Corrupted files, hard drive test?

  Hi guys, I'm currently on a macbook with a 1TB external hard drive connected trough a USB hub wich is connected on my macbook. The problem is, my disk, wich is partitioned in 2 (one HFS+ and one NTFS) keeps getting corrupted, recently it was my HFS+ partition, I could not repair it using the Apple's Disk utility, but was able to backup my files. Is it synonym that my hard drive is failing? Is it because of my USB hub? I also keep all my iTunes library on my external HD (HFS+ partition), and did a lot of transfer lately, adding files, removing etc. the last time, my partition got corrupted after a lot of deleted items. If anybody has an idea of what to check first, what could cause the problem, I would appreciate it :) Thanks!

• Defrag/TRIM settings for hybrid hard drive?

  I recently acquired a momentus XT hybrid hard drive. This is a tradition spinning HDD with a small SSD portion for frequently used files. Normally, you are not supposed to defrag SSDs, as it does not help performance and can significantly reduce the life of the drive. But you do need to defrag an HDD to keep good performance. So where does that leave us for hybrid drives? Do I need to turn off defragging in Windows to preserve the SSD portion? Is the on-disk controller smart enough to handle defragging correctly? Is there some utility I need to set it up that I missed? Additionally, for SSDs you normally want to check for and enable TRIM support... but this makes no sense for a HDDs. Where does that leave us for hybrid drives? Should I try to enable TRIM or not?

  I hope I didn’t screw up the tile. Currently I’m using for my system 2x500g Raid0 system. I’m thinking about an upgrade but I got hold up by few questions. I need at least 100-120 gb for my system and apps and looking for a technological upgrade also. I've end up with 3 choices. Single 120 ssd (sata 6 drive) 2x60 ssd drives, but I've heard it's not possible. PCI ssd drive (~120gb). They all have very similar read/write values and prices but I was wondering if anyone could give some tips on which way to go. I run win7x64 and do a lot of multitasking(especially adobe stuff).

• Installed Ubuntu 11.10, getting hard disk health warnings

  I'm getting hard disk health problem warnings... When I click the "examine" button the disk utility pops up. None of my drives are reporting any major issues, and the very first drive doesn't even have a SMART button. I don't really care if one of the drives is crashing, I've got everything backed up, but I just want to know how to stop these god forsaken message boxes from popping up randomly. I have already gone into the Disk Utility and checked "do not notify me if this drive is failing" on all of them except the one that doesn't have the SMART button. I've googled about as much as I can for one day.

• Safest snapshot of a failing harddrive?

  I have a headless machine that stopped booting, so I pulled it out for diagnostics and got a message that one of the harddrives was about to fail, so I pulled them all out and I need to get everything off, before figuring out which I need to get rid of. I wasn't sure which drive was failing, because it only said "Harddrive 1" and I don't know which it referred to. I'm wondering the best way to get everything off. I'm worried if I copy everything, I could get corrupt data and not realize some files are wrong until the drive is completely out of commission. What are my best options to get everything off in a way I can safely move to new storage?

• Missing hard drive total space in Windows

  I have an HP Pavilion DM4 with a 750 GB hard drive. A few days ago, I installed Windows 8 on it, so I am now dual booting Win7 and Win8 (and I also have a 100 MB system reserved partition). I noticed that I am only able to see 700 GB of hard disk space (169 for Win 8 and 529 for Win 7). I booted of an Ubuntu 11.04 LiveCD and in the disk utility it said that my Win 8 partition is 182 GB and my Win 7 partition is 568 GB, correctly adding up to 750 GB. I would like to reclaim the missing space in its respective partitions. Any advice on how to go about doing this?
