  • MySQL query puzzle - finding what WOULD have been the most recent date

    I've looked all over and haven't yet found an intelligent way to handle this, though I feel sure one is possible: One table of historical data has quarterly information: CREATE TABLE Quarterly ( unique_ID INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, date_posted DATE NOT NULL, datasource TINYINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, data FLOAT NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (unique_ID)); Another table of historical data (which is very large) contains daily information: CREATE TABLE Daily ( unique_ID INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, date_posted DATE NOT NULL, datasource TINYINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, data FLOAT NOT NULL, qtr_ID INT UNSIGNED, PRIMARY KEY (unique_ID)); The qtr_ID field is not part of the feed of daily data that populated the database - instead, I need to retroactively populate the qtr_ID field in the Daily table with the Quarterly.unique_ID row ID, using what would have been the most recent quarterly data on that Daily.date_posted for that data source. For example, if the quarterly data is 101 2009-03-31 1 4.5 102 2009-06-30 1 4.4 103 2009-03-31 2 7.6 104 2009-06-30 2 7.7 105 2009-09-30 1 4.7 and the daily data is 1001 2009-07-14 1 3.5 ?? 1002 2009-07-15 1 3.4 && 1003 2009-07-14 2 2.3 ^^ then we would want the ?? qtr_ID field to be assigned '102' as the most recent quarter for that data source on that date, and && would also be '102', and ^^ would be '104'. The challenges include that both tables (particularly the daily table) are actually very large, they can't be normalized to get rid of the repetitive dates or otherwise optimized, and for certain daily entries there is no preceding quarterly entry. I have tried a variety of joins, using datediff (where the challenge is finding the minimum value of datediff greater than zero), and other attempts but nothing is working for me - usually my syntax is breaking somewhere. Any ideas welcome - I'll execute any basic ideas or concepts and report back.

  • What makes an effective UI for displaying versioning of structured hierarchical data

    Traditional version control system are displaying versioning information by grouping Projects-Folders-Files with Tree view on the left and details view on the right, then you will click on each item to look at revision history for that configuration history. Assuming that I have all the historical versioning information available for a project from Object-oriented model perspective (e.g. classes - methods - parameters and etc), what do you think will be the most effective way to present such information in UI so that you can easily navigate and access the snapshot view of the project and also the historical versioning information? Put yourself in the position that you are using a tool like this everyday in your job like you are currently using SVN, SS, Perforce or any VCS system, what will contribute to the usability, productivity and effectiveness of the tool. I personally find the classical way for display folders and files like above are very restrictive and less effective for displaying deep nested logical models. Assuming that this is a greenfield project and not restricted by specific technology, how do you think I should best approach this? I am looking for idea and input here to add values to my research project. Feel free to make any suggestions that you think is valuable. Thanks again for anyone that shares their thoughts.

  • Is it possible in SQLAlchemy to filter by a database function or stored procedure?

    We're using SQLalchemy in a project with a legacy database. The database has functions/stored procedures. In the past we used raw SQL and we could use these functions as filters in our queries. I would like to do the same for SQLAlchemy queries if possible. I have read about the @hybrid_property, but some of these functions need one or more parameters, for example; I have a User model that has a JOIN to a bunch of historical records. These historical records for this user, have a date and a debit and credit field, so we can look up the balance of a user at a specific point in time, by doing a SUM(credit) - SUM(debit) up until the given date. We have a database function for that called dbo.Balance(user_id, date_time). I can use this to check the balance of a user at a given point in time. I would like to use this as a criterium in a query, to select only users that have a negative balance at a specific date/time. selection = users.filter(coalesce(Users.status, 0) == 1, coalesce(Users.no_reminders, 0) == 0, dbo.pplBalance(Users.user_id, datetime.datetime.now()) < -0.01).all() This is of course a non-working example, just for you to get the gist of what I'd like to do. The solution looks to be to use hybrd properties, but as I mentioned above, these only work without parameters (as they are properties, not methods).   • The way I think about Diagnostic tools

    Every software has issues, or as we like to call them "bugs". That is not a discussion point, just a mere fact. It follows that an important skill for developers is to be able to diagnose issues in their code. Of course we need to advance our tools and techniques so we can prevent bugs getting into the code (e.g. unit testing), but beyond designing great software, diagnosing bugs is an equally important skill. To diagnose issues, the most important assets are good techniques, skill, experience, and maybe talent. What also helps is having good diagnostic tools and what helps further is knowing all the features that they offer and how to use them. The following classification is how I like to think of diagnostics. Note that like with any attempt to bucketize anything, you run into overlapping areas and blurry lines. Nevertheless, I will continue sharing my generalizations ;-) It is important to identify at the outset if you are dealing with a performance or a correctness issue. If you have a performance issue, use a profiler. I hear people saying "I am using the debugger to debug a performance issue", and that is fine, but do know that a dedicated profiler is the tool for that job. Just because you don't need them all the time and typically they cost more plus you are not as familiar with them as you are with the debugger, doesn't mean you shouldn't invest in one and instead try to exclusively use the wrong tool for the job. Visual Studio has a profiler and a concurrency visualizer (for profiling multi-threaded apps). If you have a correctness issue, then you have several options - that's next :-) This is how I think of identifying a correctness issue Do you want a tool to find the issue for you at design time? The compiler is such a tool - it gives you an exact list of errors. Compilers now also offer warnings, which is their way of saying "this may be an error, but I am not smart enough to know for sure". There are also static analysis tools, which go a step further than the compiler in identifying issues in your code, sometimes with the aid of code annotations and other times just by pointing them at your raw source. An example is FxCop and much more in Visual Studio 11 Code Analysis. Do you want a tool to find the issue for you with code execution? Just like static tools, there are also dynamic analysis tools that instead of statically analyzing your code, they analyze what your code does dynamically at runtime. Whether you have to setup some unit tests to invoke your code at runtime, or have to manually run your app (and interact with it) under the tool, or have to use a script to execute your binary under the tool… that varies. The result is still a list of issues for you to address after the analysis is complete or a pause of the execution when the first issue is encountered. If a code path was not taken, no analysis for it will exist, obviously. An example is the GPU Race detection tool that I'll be talking about on the C++ AMP team blog. Another example is the MSR concurrency CHESS tool. Do you want you to find the issue at design time using a tool? Perform a code walkthrough on your own or with colleagues. There are code review tools that go beyond just diffing sources, and they help you with that aspect too. For example, there is a new one in Visual Studio 11 and searching with my favorite search engine yielded this article based on the Developer Preview. Do you want you to find the issue with code execution? Use a debugger - let’s break this down further next. This is how I think of debugging: There is post mortem debugging. That means your code has executed and you did something in order to examine what happened during its execution. This can vary from manual printf and other tracing statements to trace events (e.g. ETW) to taking dumps. In all cases, you are left with some artifact that you examine after the fact (after code execution) to discern what took place hoping it will help you find the bug. Learn how to debug dump files in Visual Studio. There is live debugging. I will elaborate on this in a separate post, but this is where you inspect the state of your program during its execution, and try to find what the problem is. More from me in a separate post on live debugging. There is a hybrid of live plus post-mortem debugging. This is for example what tools like IntelliTrace offer. If you are a tools vendor interested in the diagnostics space, it helps to understand where in the above classification your tool excels, where its primary strength is, so you can market it as such. Then it helps to see which of the other areas above your tool touches on, and how you can make it even better there. Finally, see what areas your tool doesn't help at all with, and evaluate whether it should or continue to stay clear. Even though the classification helps us think about this space, the reality is that the best tools are either extremely excellent in only one of this areas, or more often very good across a number of them. Another approach is to offer a toolset covering all areas, with appropriate integration and hand off points from one to the other. Anyway, with that brain dump out of the way, in follow-up posts I will dive into live debugging, and specifically live debugging in Visual Studio - stay tuned if that interests you.   • Overcoming maximum file path length restrictions in Windows

    One of our customers habitually use very long path names (several nested folders, with long names) and we routinely encounter "user education issues" in order to shorten the path to less than 260 characters. Is there a technical solution available, can we flick some sort of switch in Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 to say "yeah just ignore these historical problems, and make +260 character path name work". P.S. I have read and been totally unedified by Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces

  • Problems debugging using Cygwin gdb in Eclipse CDT(Helios)

    I am trying to debug an application using Eclipse CDT and cygwin gdb and I am facing a problem if my code calls Sleep(), it looks like whenever a sleep is encountered in the code the debugger seems to go in an infinite loop(I meant it never terminates or hit a breakpoint after sleep). On pressing pause the code is stuck on one of the thread on sigint::interrupt. Even my debugger console windows throw these error in the console output: [New thread 5968.0x1f98] Error: dll starting at 0x774a0000 not found. Error: dll starting at 0x775c0000 not found. [New thread 5968.0x19e8] Any idea what are these errors about? It would be helpful if someone can help me out here as I am new to eclipse and I am used to using VS so it has made be lazy to be honest and expect things to work out of box. Here are more details if required Windows 7 x64 bit. Eclipse 3.6 Helios with CDT plug-in compiled from the CVS head. Cygwin latest from website, I think it is 1.71

  • MMC Snapin development: 'MMC not responding' - Is there a timeout that can be set for debugging?

    So I'm writing a snapin for MMC 3. Quite often I have the debugger attached and I'm stepping through some code. MMC has some kind of a fail safe for misbehaving snapins that automatically unloads them after a timeout. The message is 'This snap-in is not responding'. After that MMC can behave as though your snap-in has been unloaded. fair enough, it's not responding because I'm stepping through the debugger. However, the timeout is very small for development. Does anyone know of a way of increasing the timeout? I googled and couldn't find anything. Checking the MMC registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC and couldn't see anything there. I also checked the snap-in registry location under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns. No luck. I feel like there must be a way of increasing the timeout as this is something the devs as Microsoft must have encountered this problem.

  • Visual studio 2010 remote debugging is very slow (across domains, over vpn)

    Overall debugging works, but each step through code takes dosens of seconds. I've already closed all additional windows like stack trace,watches,autos; deleted all breakpoints. server and dev machine are located in different domains, so i set up local user on both, with matching password. remote debugger is running as service. looking at security log, I found quite a lot of entries about remote debugging account logging in (record about every minute). Any suggestions on how i can speed up remote debugging? dev computer: quad core, 8 Gb mem, win 7 x64 , visual studio 2010 ultimate target server: asp.net website , 2xdual core xeon, 2Gb mem, remote debugger 2010 communication channel: vpn , 5 mbit , latency about 20ms. (seems that debbugging never uses more than 20 kb/s)

  • How To debug Android app on Emulator using NetBeans IDE

    I recently downloaded the latest NetBeans IDE (for MACOSX) and imported/migrated a project over from the ECLIPSE environment. Everything looks, and works well... except that EMULATOR gets stuck "waiting for the debugger to attach." I tried "Attaching Debugger..." and set the PORT value to every case I've ever read about (8200, 8700, 5555, etc.) but the connection is refused. I am of the opinion that this is not the preferred way to start a debugging session in NetBeans for Android. What am I missing?

I tried a few things and if I turn on if i 'activate breakpoints' it all works fine...     I get this error when launching my Mongrel server... $ script/server --debugger => Booting Mongrel => Rails 2.3.5 application starting on http://0.0.0.0:3000 config.gem: Unpacked gem authlogic-2.1.3 in vendor/gems has no specification file. Run 'rake gems:refresh_specs' to fix this. => Debugger enabled => Call with -d to detach => Ctrl-C to shutdown server When I run rake gems:refresh_specs like it suggests I get another error though: rake aborted! undefined method `installed_source_index' for #<Gem::SourceIndex:0x100551a58> Any thoughts on how to fix this?

    hi, let's say i have something like this (very simplified): <pre><code> class base { void invoke() { this-foo(); } virtual void foo() = 0; }; class FirstDerived : public base { void foo() { // do stuff } }; class SecondDerived : public FirstDerived { // other not related stuff } int main() { SecondDerived *a = new SecondDerived(); a-invoke(); } What i see in the debugger is that base::invoke() is called and tries to call this-foo(); (i expect FirstDerived::foo() to be called), the debugger takes me to some unfamiliar assembly code (probably because it jumped to unrelated areas) and after few lines i get segmentation fault. am i doing something wrong here? :/ thanks in advance

    We are running visual studio 2008 (with the service pack) and having troubles when we are debugging an asp classic website. We can attach to the w3p process and debug just fine. breakpoints work, we can view variable values. The difficulty arises when it comes time to detach or stop the debugger. Every time we take either approach (detach or stop the debugger) we get a series of crashes from Visual studio. Has anyone seen anything like this? Any suggestions on what to look at?

    I'm trying to debug an Eclipse plug-in when it is running in another language (japanese). The problem I'm encountering is: I can't get the Eclipse debugger to run another Eclipse instance in another language. I've got all my strings externalized to resource bundles ... and, when the plug-in is installed in Eclipse on a machine that has it's default language set to Japanese, it runs OK ... but there are a few problems that I need to resolve. I've tried setting the Eclipse -nl parameter to ja_JP along with '-Duser.language=ja -Duser.country=JP' on the VM arguments, but every time Eclipse is launched, everything is in English. Any suggestions on how I can get the debugger to launch the Eclipse instance in Japanese?

  • Java web-app debugging not possible due to direct undeploy on debug

    When i try to debug my webapp it starts up the tomcat server and the application, but shuts down the debugger shortly before the app gets usable.   • Flash Player 10.1 for Flash Professional CS4 playerglobal.swc?

    Adobe released projector, debugger and plugin for Flash 10.1 yesterday. on my Mac i've installed the standalone player and debugger in Adobe Flash CS4/Players/ and Adobe Flash CS4/Players/Debug respectively. however, i think i need to download the globalplayer.swc for 10.1 so that Flash CS4 IDE is directed to use the new players. i've searched but i could only find the globalplayer.swc that was released during the 10.1 betas, and i'm not sure if that's the .swc i should use for the final 10.1 release. Adobe's site doesn't mention anything about replacing the .swc to use 10.1 in CS4, so i'm not sure if it's necessary. i've tried creating actionscripts to include flash.ui.Multitouch and flashx.textLayout and neither can be found. i have no idea how to make Flash Professional CS4 use the new APIs available in Flash Player 10.1 suggestions?

  • Can't debug code using VS 2010 beta 2

    This is really strange and I can't seem to figure out why it won't work. I have a C# dll that is a add on for another program, the main program is not mine or a .Net app so I am starting it with Start external program in the debugging tab and and passing my program as a command line and the program starts and loads my add on however my Visual Studio debugger doesn't step into the debugger and won't hit my break points. I checked the module window and it's not even loaded in there, I used process explorer and had a look at main program and my dll was loaded into the main app. The project is set to debug, symbols to full and still nothing. I created the project in VS 2008 and it worked fine and am now trying to get this to work in VS 2010 and no go. Anyone know what could be causing this?
