• Ubercart for 'serious' ecommerce?

  Im big Drupal fan, and some very high profile sites use Drupal which also suggests that its a good system. Can the same be said for Ubercart? Ive used it for some small e commerce sites purely because I know Drupal. It seems to lack some basic features and also relies on javascript. I dont know of any high profile e commerce sites using it. My productivity would take a big hit if I had to learn a new e commerce platform and also if I couldn't use my favorite CMS with it, but do I have a choice? If not I guess I can hope that Drupal 7's Commerce module will be an improvement. Thanks

Without a vision and strategy that addresses process improvement, data integrity, and user adoption software, investments alone will not meet the needs or expectations of most organizations. The research found that the majority of finance teams in 12 countries—including the U.K., USA, France, Germany, Russia, and Spain—have made substantial investments in corporate financial management processes and systems over the last three years. • How can I make a case for "dependency management"?

  I'm currently trying to make a case for adopting dependency management for builds (ala Maven, Ivy, NuGet) and creating an internal repository for shared modules, of which we have over a dozen enterprise wide. What are the primary selling points of this build technique? The ones I have so far: Eases the process of distributing and importing shared modules, especially version upgrades. Requires the dependencies of shared modules to be precisely documented. Removes shared modules from source control, speeding and simplifying checkouts/check ins (when you have applications with 20+ libraries this is a real factor). Allows more control or awareness of what third party libs are used in your organization. Are there any selling points that I'm missing? Are there any studies or articles giving improvement metrics?

• Paren-free PHP? [on hold]

  I stumbled upon the idea for paren-free ecmascript (https://brendaneich.com/2010/11/paren-free/), which is inspired by Go language. And it's simple, clean and cool - if you make braces required instead of recommended (and they are recommended everywhere anyway: http://www.php-fig.org/psr/psr-2/), then parenthesis are unneeded around control structure “heads”. It would work exactly the same in PHP. So, a piece of PHP code could look like this: if $someVar == 42 { doSomething(); } or: foreach $someArray as $key => $value { echo "$key: $value"; } It's a small, but nice step towards a nicer, cleaner syntax and removing unnecessary parts. The question is - would PHP community be willing to see the languange move in that direction? Would it be considered an improvement by majority, or are we too used to typing those parenthesis and unwilling to see any change in PHP syntax?

  Re-Sharper is an excellent aid to producing good code in either C# or VB.NET. Recently through using Resharper and StyleCop, I have found three area where ReSharper needs to be improved. When Resharper removes a redundant else, there needs to be a blank line added. Currently there is no provision to specify this. Please vote for this! Why not offer the same for a static constructor?  Please vote for this! • Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. Last year Temenos also communicated the availability of its T24 core banking system and how the benchmark run demonstrated the ability of Oracle’s Exadata platform to comfortably support the highest banking volumes for T24.   In my quest to keep my fingers on the pulse of MDM, I recently found a pretty interesting article.  The article was published in Information Week and provides some interesting statistics from a recent survey conducted by the analyst firm, The Information Difference.  Let's take a look: Of the 130 organizations surveyed, 53% have live operational MDM implementations 81% of those with live operational MDM implementations report broad success - a huge improvement over 2011's 54% 64% developed a business case prior to their MDM deployment, while a daring 32% went ahead without a business case.    The article goes on to talk about the shift in vendors from focusing on customer data and product information management to one that is oriented around multi-domain master data management as well as other realities around MDM.  Take a look at the article. • Archiving your contact form data.

  I get TONS of email from customer. Over time, this email helps me to determine what areas in our product collection are opportunities for enhancement or improvement. I store the email that comes from my blog contact form in folders and then search through them looking for trends periodically. It occurred to me that, while I need to get the emails because many of them are actionable, it would be great if I could use reporting and analysis tools against the collection. • Running external commands improved a bit

  Hi all, today we would like to show you one small improvement related to running external commands (e.g. generating documentation, running framework commands etc.) which will be available in NetBeans 7.3. First, have a look at the screenshot: As you can see, the first line represents the command that is being executed. In case of any error, this command can be easily copy & pasted to the console for deeper investigation (and proper bug reports ;). Also please notice that the Output window now supports background colors. That's all for today, as always, please test it and report all the issues or enhancements you find in NetBeans Bugzilla (component php, subcomponent Code).

• What effect does using itemprop="significantLinks" on anchors have for SEO and what is the ideal use?

  I'm practicing application of microdata via http://schema.org. Anyone who's browsed the documentation there knows that there's a lot of need for improvement for more clear understandings on use for each property. My question on this post is more about the "significantLinks" property and how it effects SEO for on page, in content anchored text. Does anyone have any more information regarding whether its good to use for link optimization? I understand what schema.org means that it's to be used on "non-navigational links" and those links should be relevant to the current page's meaning. But will using this property hurt SEO or make SEO better for each page?

• PC won't boot up after installing 11.10

  I have a HP/Compaq s1010z (AMD64) desktop and installed 11.10 from a CD (using the entire disk). So it formatted the entire drive, went through installation and then it ejected the CD and asked me to click the Restart button, which I did. It rebooted fine the first time, but any time thereafter, it fails. Meaning, after the initial BIOS screen, the monitor seems to be stuck in limbo with a text cursor blinking on the top left corner, as if it can't find anything to boot from. At first I tried reinstalling (reformat entire drive again) - no improvement. Then I did an in-place re-installation (leave home dirs in place, just redo the OS), nothing there either. Then I put in the 11.04 CD, changed the boot order to CD first, and got the CD menu, chose 'Boot from first hard disk' and it booted fine. The problem is that I can't boot without the 11.04 CD, how ironic! Any ideas?

• Disable "Ubuntu 14.04" and "Files" from auto sorting alphabetically and THEN<(Disable the then.) automatically going to that location

  I looked about in Ubuntu 14.04 and I could not find a option to disable a feature that made extra work for me. After renaming something "Files" then reorganizes alphanumerically and then automatically moves the prompt/cursor/highlighting to the new file name at the new alphanumerical location. It's much easier and practical if the working cursor remains in the same area where the file was found that needed name changes or needed name spelling corrections. Windows 7 does what I ask about and it's a huge improvement over that auto sort and then go to the new file location. A example to consider is a file is in the "A" area and then you rename it to a "Z" and you are then taken to the "Z" stuff and need to scroll hundreds of lines back to the "A" section. It's annoying. • From the Coalface - 2 - Work as hard as you can to be as lazy as you can

  On one project, the standard build involved building the database from scratch producing a build log that was about 100,000 lines long.  Manually paging throught this log took hours and it was very easy to miss any errors. The solution was to write a filter that read the log file and output a summary file with each output line pepended with the line number in the original file. Sucessive iterations eliminated more noise lines. Diagnostic displays required escaping. The final output was just a few hundred lines long and the errors were easy to spot. The filter program took less time to to write than one manual pass reading the log file.  The utility digested the log file in about 1 second. Now database build errors could be identified quickly instead of after hours of manual examination or lengthy system testing. A few minutes consideration of the task led to a tremendous improvement in quality.

• Hash Function Added To The PredicateEqualityComparer

  Sometime ago I wrote a predicate equality comparer to be used with LINQ’s Distinct operator. The Distinct operator uses an instance of an internal Set class to maintain the collection of distinct elements in the source collection which in turn checks the hash code of each element (by calling the GetHashCode method of the equality comparer) and only if there’s already an element with the same hash code in the collection calls the Equals method of the comparer to disambiguate. At the time I provided only the possibility to specify the comparison predicate, but, in some cases, comparing a hash code instead of calling the provided comparer predicate can be a significant performance improvement, I’ve added the possibility to had a hash function to the predicate equality comparer. • How to handle situation of programmer stealing credit for your project [on hold]

  There is a coworker who has stolen credit for my work. I created a system that will show live statuses of printing machines throughout the plant. There was one glitch in it so the coworker made an improvement and then re-wrote the entire system (copying 90% of my code, yet he added a new piece of hardware then took over the project). Now he asks me programming questions from time to time. I don't mind teaching coworkers how to program, but since he has stolen my ideas and credit in the past I am reluctant to teach him all I know. Today he asks me for a particularly challenging algorithm for this system. His code now looks exactly like the way I would program! How would you handle the situation? How can I decline helping him without appearing to not being a team player?

• Alt text vs CSS sprites (SEO vs speed)

  I'm reworking our site to reduce HTTP requests and blocking requests by concatenating JS, css, gzipping, loading all JS via LABjs and using CSS sprites for images that were loaded individually via <img> tags before. Progress has been great so far - 5x page load performance improvement. However, we're in the top 5 organic search ranking in google for many targeted keywords and phrases. I'm afraid eliminating so many img tags with alt attributes can hurt our SEO. Does anyone have any experience with alt tag manip/removal and effects on SEO positions? Is previous rank "sticky"?
