  • Did I choose proper career path? [closed]

    I am a C# Junior. My company has it's own enterprise documents-flow system written, my job along with 10 other programmers is to write modules/add-ons for it. I am totally bored of this job, I dont like Microsoft's technologies stack (dont hate me here, just subjective), but it's plain boring, enterprise is boring (subjective again, everyone's tastes differ), days on this work last long and I am tired of it. In short - I dont like my job. In my spare time I am doing PHP-development and I totally like it. I am also doing web-design, so I am LAMP-kind of guy who loves his Ubuntu and does design aswell. I know that most programmers don't do design themselves, so some person is either all about design or all about coding, but I enjoy both and do both. I often get interesting sites orders, I love to make whole websites with all the design, I love the feeling of site completeness, I enjoy talking with customers. I like that PHP is simple and skill cap is lower than one of java, meaning I can become expert in it after some years. But C# (and J2EE also) pay more, and I am doing really good in C#. But I dont like it. I can go for J2EE, platform itself seems more fun to me rather than .NET, but EE development is still boring to me. But it seems higher payed, easier to find job (since PHP is too common for its easiness. But if you are expert in something it doesnt matter, right? Just a higher skillcap.) Question: I want to go on with freelance. I want to have an opportunity to start my own startup in web. Actually I have a browser-game already written by myself, it earns me around 500$ per month which I am really proud of since I am 21 only and still noob in coding. I want to find part-time PHP job. 3 days per week so I can get some stable income, I can work in team and learn from them, social factor matters aswell as ensurance and diversity. I also want my total income (freelance + part-time job + own startup maybe)to be not too much less than one I have working in EE development sector. Maximum of 25% lower, but not more. Is it all possible if I stick with web-development (LAMP + HTML/CSS/JS/Jquery/AJAX)? Or is it easier to reach my goals with EE development?

  • I can't install Truecrypt on Ubuntu 12.04

    I have a Windows 7 machine with Truecrypt. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 with the intention of converting to an Ubuntu only machine but I can't install Truecrypt on Ubuntu. I have been looking through the forums and have followed all advice to the letter and still Truecrypt doesn't work; I have only a non-functional icon in "dash". Should I uninstall Ubuntu and start over (ie reinstall)? I love Ubuntu and greatly appreciate your efforts on this forum.

From our reception desk: The Front line of Communication However, we recognise that sometimes our customers would like to be able to solve their problems or answer their questions without talking to us - they're in a hurry, it's outside office hours . or perhaps they just prefer not to pick up the phone and call.   Self-service customer care So we've begun a programme of work to enable more self-service; whether it's finding the answer to a "how do i.?" question or getting access to a record of what product licenses they own, we want to make it much easier for our customers to get hold of this information for themselves. If they want to.   Phase 1: make it easier to find information We decided to start by tackling findability. We've got loads of useful information on our website, but it's sometimes difficult to find, so we've been working on improving our site search. Step 1 has been to replace the search engine, clean up the search UI, and make it consistent across the site. We're nearly there! The idea is that if we improve the site search it will be easier - and much more pleasant - for people to find the information they need. The new search will go live some time in April, and then we'll be gathering feedback, looking at web analytics (more about this in an earlier article), and working out what improvements we still need to make. I've always pronounced this namespace just like sexually transmitted diseases: S T D. But then I listened to this excellent series of lectures by Stephan T. Lavavej and he pronounces it "stood".     at work ive installed ubuntu 10.10 and love using the Super+a keyboard shortcut to switch between my windows. at home i use kubuntu 12.04 and miss that feature. ive seen a video on youtube and know that it is possible but couldn't figure out how. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KeyboardShortcuts/ Super + A | Enables the 'scale' effect, it shows all windows from all workspaces. thanks for your time

    I am trying to learn redirection for a WordPress site of my own. I am testing the concept of redirecting a single WordPress post by using a dummy site. However, it doesn't seem to be working for me. I am trying to redirect www.perfectmatchmaker[dot]org/finding-the-right-matchmaker to www.perfectmatchmaker[dot]org/finding-the-perfect-matchmaker I read that using the following is how to do this: Redirect 301 /old.html http://www.you[dot]com/new.html So this is what my .htaccess file currently looks like: # Use PHP5 as default AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php # BEGIN WordPress <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /index.php [L] </IfModule> # END WordPress Redirect 301 /finding-the-right-matchmaker.html http://www.perfectmatchmaker.org/finding-the-perfect-matchmaker.html I've also tried removing the ".html". The redirection of the URL is finally working, but the URL shows no posts available.   • How can I tell which page is creating a high-CPU-load httpd process?

    I have a LAMP server (CentOS-based MediaTemple (DV) Extreme with 2GB RAM) running a customized Wordpress+bbPress combination . At about 30k pageviews per day the server is starting to groan. It stumbled earlier today for about 5 minutes when there was an influx of traffic. Even under normal conditions I can see that the virtual server is sometimes at 90%+ CPU load. Using Top I can often see 5-7 httpd processes that are each using 15-30% (and sometimes even 50%) CPU. Before we do a big optimization pass (our use of MySQL is probably the culprit) I would love to find the pages that are the main offenders and deal with them first. Is there a way that I can find out which specific requests were responsible for the most CPU-hungry httpd processes? I have found a lot of info on optimization in general, but nothing on this specific question. Secondly, I know there are a million variables, but if you have any insight on whether we should be at the boundaries of performance with a single dedicated virtual server with a site of this size, then I would love to hear your opinion. Should we be thinking about moving to a more powerful server, or should we be focused on optimization on the current server?

  • Has anyone used tools like (Chef, Salt, Puppet, CfEngine) to configure a 2008 Win Server with Sql?

    I have been looking into tools to automate the creation of servers. For two different reasons: Production Development machines I love the idea of the immutable server. I have seen the tools demoed and used successfully on *nix boxes running Rails or Lamp etc. Has anyone found a good way to do this in the Microsoft stack? I would like to get in on the fun and create scripts that will install Windows, patch it according to specification, deploy Sql Server create scripts to build out a database and just for fun deploy SharePoint and configure it, and then deploy a SharePoint solution to it. I can get part of the way, install Windows manually, install Sql Server manually, use Powershell to do all the configuration and setup. Install SharePoint and configure part of it, then powershell for the rest of the configuration and deploying a solution. I would love to have the ability to run one script though, or at least one unified process. I can, and have mostly used VM template images and then instantiated them, but the creation of the template is usually a manual step.

  • What is a good client for handling large amounts of mail ?

    Although the title sums it up nice, I'll repeat and explain. What would be a good email client for handling large amounts of mail ? Large portion of mails I receive come with attachments (zip, rar, pdf, dwg, etc.) and within a month I usually have another 1,5-2Gb of new mail. I've noticed that 'standard' Outlook Express (with whose interface I've been very happy) gets awfully slow after a while. Archiving helps but not much. Then I usually take the files, move them onto a dvd, delete all messages I can do without and start anew. The thing is, I would love to have them all in email client since I often go after some old mails (slow projects). So, what would be good alternatives ? If it is portable, that would also be nice, but I can also live without it. post scriptum: I love @gmail, but cannot use it for work. I know I could theoretically forward all of it there, and back, but that approach doesn't make my boss very happy (email handling policies and similar).
