  • Case Management API by Koen van Dijk

    Case Management is a new addition to Oracle BPM in release 11.1.1.1.7 (PS6). This new release contains the Case Management engine, see blog Léon at  http://leonsmiers.blogspot.nl/ for more details.  However, currently this release does not contain a case portal. The case management API's, just like the already existing Oracle BPM API's, help in developing a portal page with relative ease. This blog will use some real life examples from the EURent casemanagement application and portal application developed by Oracle. The Oracle BPM Case Management API is a Java Based API that enables developers to programmatically access the new Case Management functionalities. It is an elaborate API that can access all the functionalities of Oracle Case Management. I will describe two of those functionalities in this blog: retrieving case data as DOM (http://www.w3.org/DOM/) and attaching a document to a case. Libraries First of all when creating a Case Management project you will need to attach the following libraries: These contain all the classes that are in the Case Management API. Service client To do anything with the BPM CaseManagement API in general it is necessary to create a CaseManagementServiceClient Object. The Case Management service client is the central piece of the Case Management API. It can be used to retrieve two different types of services. The first is the case stream service and the case service. The case stream service contains functionality to upload and download documents to and from a case. The second one is the CaseService.   • Google Webmaster Tools Data Highlighter says "Failed to load data, please try again later"

    I seem to be unable to access the data highlighter in Google Webmaster Tools since I attempted to start a new highlight on a page. Clicking the red Start Highlighting button to open the tagger did nothing, so I refreshed. Now, the page loads without the middle content section, then a few seconds later shows the following error: Failed to load data, please try again later. I can't get any of the middle section to load, even the list of current pages/page sets that have been highlighted—this error shows. I thought it may be a Google service outage, but other sites' data highlighters work fine. It also seems coincidental that it stopped working after I attempted to start highlighting—I was able to list the existing pages and page sets fine before that, and still am able to access the service on other sites. I've tried clearing browser data and have tried Google Chrome as well—same problem. What's happened?

  • Big Data – Buzz Words: What is NewSQL – Day 10 of 21

    In yesterday’s blog post we learned the importance of the relational database. In this article we will take a quick look at the what is NewSQL. What is NewSQL? NewSQL stands for new scalable and high performance SQL Database vendors. The products sold by NewSQL vendors are horizontally scalable. NewSQL is not kind of databases but it is about vendors who supports emerging data products with relational database properties (like ACID, Transaction etc.) along with high performance. Products from NewSQL vendors usually follow in memory data for speedy access as well are available immediate scalability. NewSQL term was coined by 451 groups analyst Matthew Aslett in this particular blog post. On the definition of NewSQL, Aslett writes: “NewSQL” is our shorthand for the various new scalable/high performance SQL database vendors. We have previously referred to these products as ‘ScalableSQL‘ to differentiate them from the incumbent relational database products. Since this implies horizontal scalability, which is not necessarily a feature of all the products, we adopted the term ‘NewSQL’ in the new report. And to clarify, like NoSQL, NewSQL is not to be taken too literally: the new thing about the NewSQL vendors is the vendor, not the SQL. In other words - NewSQL incorporates the concepts and principles of Structured Query Language (SQL) and NoSQL languages. It combines reliability of SQL with the speed and performance of NoSQL. Categories of NewSQL There are three major categories of the NewSQL New Architecture – In this framework each node owns a subset of the data and queries are split into smaller query to sent to nodes to process the data. E.g. NuoDB, Clustrix, VoltDB MySQL Engines – Highly Optimized storage engine for SQL with the interface of MySQ Lare the example of such category. E.g. InnoDB, Akiban Transparent Sharding – This system automatically split database across multiple nodes. E.g.   • How to deal with project managers who micromanage?

    Perhaps I'm just naive, but when I try to decipher the wall of tasks I'm targeted to do over the course of a week, I just can't help but think whoever builds the project schedule needs to get some remedial training on basic project management. For example, I am assigned 13 tasks today, the shortest lasting .13 days (default time metric in Microsoft Project), and the longest lasting .75 days. I can't help but think that it is blatant micromanagement scheduling projects in sub 10 minute intervals. The effects of management are becoming evident in slipped tasks, resource assignment exceeding capacity by a factor of two at some points in time, and spending more time clearing tasks and figuring out what comes next than actually doing work. How can I convince the project manager to create tasks with larger duration and to see the larger picture?

  • Distortion in format of data in wordpad file when shifted from windows XP to winows 2007

    I have many data files which were set to open in wordpad file in windows XP. Those files have a particular format for data, like following: Name of Data file No. of data columns Name of data in column_1 Name of data in column_2 . . . Name of data in column_n column_1 column_2 column_3 ... column_n Now my computer has been formatted and OS is changed to windows 2007, however when I open my data files in wordpad the above format of data is no more present. The format in wordpad in windows 2007 seems to be distorted. Does anyone knows what to do to restore the format as shown above, which is what the data used to look like in XP? I have attached the snap shot of the new distorted format of data as seen in wordpad in windows 2007. The snap shot shows 100 column names, however the data columns present are only 5 when it should be actually 100 data columns.

We're using this branch structure master dev-A dev-B We both work on separate branches (dev-A,B) and whenever we're done - we promote our changes to master. But the drawback of this is we can't get changes the other developer makes. Everything exists in the master tree - but we can't get the latest updates the other developer made. Is there a way to resolve this or should we change our branch structure (per feature?)?

    I've installed ubuntu 13.04 onto my hp 2231tx computer. During installation all of my data was erased. I didn't know all of my three partitions would be deleted. I was shocked after finding out that all of my personal data was erased. I didn't know what to do to resolve this problem so I search google for an answer. I found a program called testdisk and I used it to recover about half of my data. Among this data weren't my personal photos and videos. Is there a way to recover the other half?

  • How can we unify business goals and technical goals?

    Some background I work at a small startup: 4 devs, 1 designer, and 2 non-technical co-founders, one who provides funding, and the other who handles day-to-day management and sales. Our company produces mobile apps for target industries, and we've gotten a lot of lucky breaks lately. The outlook is good, and we're confident we can make this thing work. One reason is our product development team. Everyone on the team is passionate, driven, and has a great sense of what makes an awesome product. As a result, we've built some beautiful applications that we're all proud of. The other reason is the co-founders. Both have a brilliant business sense (one actually founded a multi-million dollar company already), and they have close ties in many of the industries we're trying to penetrate. Consequently, they've brought in some great business and continue to keep jobs in the pipeline. The problem The problem we can't seem to shake is how to bring these two awesome advantages together. On the business side, there is a huge pressure to deliver as fast as possible as much as possible, whereas on the development side there is pressure to take your time, come up with the right solution, and pay attention to all the details. Lately these two sides have been butting heads a lot. Developers are demanding quality while managers are demanding quantity. How can we handle this? Both sides are correct. We can't survive as a company if we build terrible applications, but we also can't survive if we don't sell enough. So how should we go about making compromises? Things we've done with little or no success: Work more (well, it did result in better quality and faster delivery, but the dev team has never been more stressed out before) Charge more (as a startup, we don't yet have the credibility to justify higher prices, so no one is willing to pay) Extend deadlines (if we charge the same, but take longer, we'll end up losing money) Things we've done with some success: Sacrifice pay to cut costs (everyone, from devs to management, is paid less than they could be making elsewhere. In return, however, we all have creative input and more flexibility and freedom, a typical startup trade off) Standardize project management (we recently started adhering to agile/scrum principles so we can base deadlines on actual velocity, not just arbitrary guesses) Hire more people (we used to have 2 developers and no designers, which really limited our bandwidth. However, as a startup we can only afford to hire a few extra people.) Is there anything we're missing or doing wrong? How is this handled at successful companies?     Sometimes when using Master Pages you need to set a property on a control from the content page. An example might be changing a label’s text to reflect some content (e.g. customer name) being viewed or maybe to change the visibility of a control depending on the rights a user may have in the application. There are different ways to do this but this is the one I like. First on the code behind of the Master Page create the property that needs to be accessed.   • Sharing disk volumes across OpenVZ guests to reduce Package Management Overhead

    Is it feasible to create a single "master" OpenVZ guest who would only be used for package management, and use something like mount --bind on several other OpenVZ guests sort of trick them into using the environment installed by the master guest? The point of this would be so that users can maintain their own containers, and yet stay in sync with the master development environment, so they'll always have the latest & greatest requirements without worrying too much about system administration. If they need to install their own packages, could put them in /opt, or /usr/local (or set a path to their home directory)? To rephrase, I would like several (developer's, for example) OpenVZ guests whose /bin, /usr (and so on...) actually refer to the same disk location as that of a master OpenVZ guest who can be started up to install and update common packages for the environment to be shared by all of this group of OpenVZ guests. For what it's worth, we're running Debian 6. Edit: I have tried mounting (bind, and readonly) /bin, /lib, /sbin, /usr in this fashion and it refuses to start the containers stating that files are already mounted or otherwise in use: Starting container ... vzquota : (error) Quota on syscall for id 1102: Device or resource busy vzquota : (error) Possible reasons: vzquota : (error) - Container's root is already mounted vzquota : (error) - there are opened files inside Container's private area vzquota : (error) - your current working directory is inside Container's vzquota : (error) private area vzquota : (error) Currently used file(s): /var/lib/vz/private/1102/sbin /var/lib/vz/private/1102/usr /var/lib/vz/private/1102/lib /var/lib/vz/private/1102/bin vzquota on failed [3] If I unmount these four volumes, and start the guest, and then mount them after the guest has started, the guest never sees them mounted.

  • Company wants to write custom project management tool, rather then use third party product.

    At the company I work, we are really wanting to get into the agile methodology for developing software. One thing that I'm not excited about is the fact that management wants us to build a custom project management feature inside the company's Intranet. I think this is a total waste of time. There are many great third party tools available (e.g. Axosoft OnTime) that can do everything we need, and more. For how much development time it would cost us to build our own project management module, we could buy numerous licences for a third party product. One concern is that, whilst we are writing code for a client, and using our custom Intranet project management module, we find bugs in the module that need fixing ASAP. That means having to stop work on the client code to fix the Intranet. That just puts shivers down my spine. Another worry I have is lack of functionality. This custom module is going to be so basic, that it will just feel really crap to use. That might sound a bit snooty, but for goodness sake, many third party tools are so feature rich, that the idea of having to write our own tool makes feel very uneasy. In fact, I can't be bothered. What do you guys think? I'm going to raise this issue with my boss, since I feel it's such an important topic to talk about. EDIT: Thanks for the great responses, much appreciated. To summarize some of them: Money Naturally my boss does want to save money, by not forking out a few hundred £'s for licences. However, for us to write a custom tool, it will take x number of days, multiplied by approx £500, which is our costs. I don't see the business value in this. Management have mentioned that they want to sell the Intranet as a product in the future, but it's so custom to our needs (and downright basic), that in order to give it to another client, I can see us having to fork a version of the code and rebuild the majority of it anyway. So it's not like we're gaining anything there in reuse. Features Having our own custom module means not feature bloat - only the functionality we require will be in the product. My issue is that there are plenty of free, open-source project management tools out there with minimal features already. So even if cost is an issue, we could look into open-source. Again it all boils down to the fact that I don't see the point in writing a project management tool in this day and age. It's a bit like writing your own web browser - why?, what's the point? Although management are asking for this tool, just because they are, it does not mean I'm going to please them and do it just because they asked for it. If something does not make sense, then I will raise it as a concern. At the end of the day, it's the developers who write the code, it's the developers who make money for a business. Thus, as far I'm concerned, the devs have a very big role in deciding how a company should manage projects and what tools are used.
