• Recommend hosting with fast MySQL database please.

  I am frustrated to no end with my current hosting provider, mediaTemple. Yes, they are flashy, and have some decent degree of flexibility with their GS plan, which I have. But anytime I install a site that needs a database, it is slow. like really slow. Taking anywhere from 10 - 15 seconds just to load a page. I would host in house, but there are a lot of complications that come with a LAMP server that I don't want to deal with. Honestly, I'd rather spend the time developing. What can you recommend?

• Failed Update & Mouse Issues

  I`m using my gfs computer - but I do have Ubuntu 11.10 up and running well to some degree. Still need to work out some bugs but not quite sure how to do that. My mouse is only somewhat responsive - cursor moves, and able to click on things but still unable to do a double click function. Left mouse button still not working at all. Tried running updates but it keeps coming up synaptic error. Not sure what that means. I have read that some people have done reinstalls of Ubuntu and it corrected the problems - not sure if that could work. Comments would be appreciated. Installed Ubuntu 11.10 but thinking of trying to wipe the system to do a fresh install can someone tell me how I get back to the Ubuntu installation menu. Wondering if gnome may need to be reset but not sure.

  I am a software developer; in fact a mobile application developer with 4 years of experience. I am passionate about training. I have never been an official trainer but, I have trained freshers on mobile technologies. Now how do I become a professional technical trainer. I have following questions: Do I need some kind of professional certification or degree? Is it too early for me to start as a trainer? I mean experience wise. I will not ask if it's worth it because I am very keen on pursuing training as a profession. However, if I have to be up to date with technology, I don't think I can give up coding and pursue training full time. Any pointers or guidelines would be helpful.

I find programming so interesting that I haven't applied for any job since my graduation. Currently I am staying home and just trying to acquire in-depth knowledge of PHP programming. • Will taking two years off for school in a related field destroy a mid level development career?

  Hi, I know some people have asked about getting back into programming after a break and this is a potential duplicate. I just am in a position where I can go back to school for a graduate degree in Stat/Applied Math. But I'm very worried about the impact it will have on my career and ability to find a job afterwards. I have 3 years experience in .NET on top of a couple of years in PHP. Right now, I'm a senior software engineer. Do you think taking two years off to do math is going to dramatically hurt my marketability?

  Possible Duplicate: Is it ever too old to learn how to become a programmer? I'm 30 years old going back to school for a 2nd degree in Computer Science. I will be transferring to my local state university this fall and would like to know if my age will be a factor when applying for internships. I have already read a few threads about age and careers: Is it too late to start your career as a programmer at the age of 30? Does it matter that you started developing at 26? While it is reassuring to know that people are getting entry-level programming jobs at 30+, what about internships? Should I even bother with bigger companies like Google, Microsoft, or Apple? I know we have laws against age-discrimination but lets not pretend we live in a perfect world where everyone follows the rules.

  Is it my perception or is it reality that it is harder to get software development work in Silicon Valley, than in other population centers? My theory is that some of the best and brightest (and youngest) are all here. All working for the top tech companies. And, little ol' me, over 40, math degree (not at Standford or Berkeley), ok at algorithms, and with many skills with many programming tools and concepts, but not published, and not top my class has a bit of a tough time competing. (I'm a Python programmer, by the way.) Thanks

• Does a person's day-to-day neatness (outside of programming) relate to quality and organization in programming?

  Before anyone jumps into any conclusion, I had a discussion with a friend (who's not a programmer at all) about the relationship between a person's neatness habit and the degree of neatness generally shown in works by the same person. This led me to think about this situation: Let's imagine you knew a programmer whose house was very messy. This person's lifestyle is messy by nature. On his desk there are books, papers, STUFF, piled everywhere including on the floor, mixed with dirty clothing, with no obvious organization at all. If you asked him to find a book he hasn't touched for at least a week from the cluster of chaos, he would take at least an hour to do so. How likely is it that he will produce very clean, consistent, and organized code that other people can use? Are there CS legends that are/were notoriously messy in day-to-day habits?

  I finished University around 4 years ago double degree in Software Eng/Comp Sci. Got my first job at a startup in my final year, was with them for 2.5 years then started my own business. So far everything is going great, lots of clients and stead work etc, but coming right out of uni and into a start up I never had any form or senior software engineer guiding my work or suggesting improvements etc... Whats the best way for me to improve & learn more? Books? MS Exams? Other? I develop in C#, ASP.NET/MVC. Update The problem isn't really with releasing products, I've released quite a few which are up and running with customers happy. It's more with quality of code, best practices, how do I know something I am code is correct, it may work but there may be ways of coding it much more efficiently or by adhering to some kind of standard Cheers for any responses!   I'm an electrical engineering student ( Power, control & instrumentation). 2 months ago I started learning C, and I found programming something really enjoyable and I'd like to continue learning C and few other programming languages along with my electrical engineering degree. So my university is offering an extensive Java Oracle course for 7 days (like 5-6 hours a day) for a really decent price, do you think as an electrical engineer this would help me in my future career? What are the benefits of learning Java for an electrical engineer of my specialization? Do you think it's a good idea for someone in my case to take such an extensive course? I'm hardworker and I really enjoy these things, so I don't think that would be a problem for me.

• Would opencv be a good choice for image colour summarization?

  I would like to analyse a set of hundreds of thousands of product images (clothing, electronic goods etc) and retrieve the dominant colours in each. I'm only interested in the top 3 or 4 colours. The aim is to achieve a degree of certainty that x image is mostly red or image y is mostly orange and blue. The images are likely to be colour jpegs of reasonable quality and approximately 100kb in size. I would like to use C# and the solution should run on a Linux server, preferably using open source libraries. Would opencv be a good choice for this? What other libraries or specific algorithms might be helpful?

  Hi I am a computer science student currently on an internship and I have been thinking more and more about looking into working for a company / places that is developing quantum computers/ing when I graduate. Here is my problem, I have a pretty solid grasp of mathematics involved in Comp Sci and enjoy learning about more Comp Sci theory but in doing some minor research about Quantum Computing it seems to me to be more about hardware and I have always leant more to the software side of things. I haven't studied any physics since high school so I am wondering if I would be suitable to work in such a field with a Comp Sci degree, is it a field more aimed at physicists?

  Here in my city, computer science is still a relatively "young" degree started at most 20-30 years ago. So most of the "senior programmers" here are at most 40 years old. I have friends in London in their mid 40s are earning decent salaries by working for investment banks on various financial products. Some of them don't want to get "promoted" as project managers because they still have the passion in coding and they are probably making more money by coding. However, when you get older, you might loss creativity and might not unable to pick up new languages or frameworsk as fast as those who are decades younger than us. For those who are unwilling or unable to be migrated to be project managers. What should be the mentally retirement age?

• About to graduage from good school without any progamming skills

  Not sure if it is good place to ask this question, but found this section to be suitable. I am about to graduate from good school (in the US) with Computer Science degree, having good grades and high GPA. I have no freaking clue how to write a good program, how to properly test it... nada, zero. We were never been tough how to write software. Ye, sure the Comp. Architecture class is important, and I can tell you a lot about how MIPS processor works, and I can tell you about Binary Trees and Red-Black Trees and running time of operations in Big Oh, but it has nothing to do with programming in "real" life. For god sake, none of my classmates know how to use STLs or write templated code !!! To be honest, I found that many of my classes to be waste of time. What should I do ? How to step into real life and learn how to program ?

I will be going out in the industry for the second year and I would just like to know some facts before launching out. I have been asked to create a system to enable the company to manage their staff and also to create a windows based system where users can register, view their details and so on. I am required to create: Several UML use case diagrams A conceptual class Diagram Test cases and test logs These have to been done for the windows based system. My concern is that I am not sure what a windows based system is and secondly I am having difficulties creating the diagrams as I am not familiar with them. • Help deciding on an area of study for a PhD [closed]

  I am going to start a PhD in about 1 year. My undergraduate degree is in computer science and my master's is in artificial intelligence. I want to get ideas about what's going to be hot in say 5 years i.e. what could I spend 3-4 years studying to potentially have expertise that will be applicable to industry and the computing world ? Impossible to answer factually but some ideas and thoughts would be great. I have narrowed my ideas down to AI (yes, even more AI) and information security. AI seems to becoming popular again but security is always a going to be useful. From a career point of view, if I were to stay working in software development then this might actually be the best move but I've always wanted to do a PhD! Many thanks :).

• Moving from an IT department to a proper technology company

  I have been working with Java/web applications in an IT department of a retail company. As much as work goes, there is nothing much to say. Fixing couple of if/else loops, writing some simple business logic etc., is all what I have been doing. Having said that, I feel I have a good technical knowledge, and I am willing to move to companies like Microsoft/Google/Amazon etc., [I want to work in these places, because I feel I am a technical guy, and I am working in a place where most people freak out when the words like 'algorithm' are heard] I can of course prepare algorithms/computer science fundamentals etc.,(I hold a 4 year degree in computer science program) but beyond that, will my experience hold against me ? I doubt I'll even get a call from them seeing my work experience. What kind of questions(apart from the algorithm types) can I expect ?

  Due to financial problems, I couldn't go for CSE in my country and had to settle for a BCIS honors degree. Now, after quite some time, when I want to go for a higher position in software development then I get asked about algorithms and basics that I have missed back in uni. • Help to understand directions of sprites in XNA

  If I want to move a sprite to the right and upwards in a 45 degree angle I use Vector2 direction = new Vector2(1,-1); And if the sprite should move straight to right Vector2 direction = new Vector2(1,0); But how would I do if I want another directions, lets say somewhere between this values? I have tested with some other values, but then the sprite either moves to fast and or in another direction than I expected!? I suspect it's about normalize!? Another thing I have problem with to understand. I'm doing a simple asteroids game as a task in a class in C# and XNA. When the asteroids hit the window borders, I want them to bounce back in a random direction, but I can't do this before I understand how directions and Vector2 works. Help is preciated! Thanks!
